1. INTRODUCTION.

This parts list contains spare part numbers, general model information and importantsafety information for the Hydraulic DrifterYH80A (hereafter referred to as drifter).

2. SAFETY FIRST.

SAFETY FIRST is the primary concern forthe protection of both, personnel and thedrifter during any phase of operation. Allpersonnel must thoroughly understand allsafety precautions before operating or do-ing any maintenance work on the drifter.

3. SAFETY PRECAUTIONS.

The Safety Precautions listed are intendedtomake all personnel aware of the hazardswhile working on or near a drifter. All per-sonnel must use common sense and agood working practice while operating andmaintaining this drifter. These safety pre-cautions listed are of a general nature andcannot cover every possible situation:

a. Do not attempt to operate the hydraulicdrifter unless you are thoroughly familiarwith all the crawler gauges, controls, andfunctions. Refer to the section of thecrawler instruction book for detailed

instructions. Failure to comply could resultin bodily injury.

b. Always wear approved hard hat, safetyshoes, safety glasses, nose mask and earprotection when near a drifter in operation.

c. Use only Ingersoll--Rand replace--ment parts.

d. Keep hands, arms, legs and clothingaway from all moving parts. Failure tocomply could result in bodily injury.

e. The drifter, striking bar, couplings, drillsteels and bit are hot during the drillingoperation. Do not touch these parts withyour bare hands. Wear gloves to protectyour hands when you are changing bits orsteels. A severe burn will result if rotatingparts are touched with bare hands.

f. Keep all hose connections tight. Aloose hose connection not only causesleaks and poor performance, but may alsoallow the hose to come off the drifter, whiparound, and injure the operator or otherpeople in the area.

g. Make sure that the parts--cleaningsolvent is non--flammable, will not harm theskin, meets current safety and healthstandards, and is used in well ventilatedarea.

h. Dry nitrogen is the only gas product tobe used to charge the drifter accumulators.Never use oxygen to charge theaccumulators. Ignition of an oxygen andoilmixture could produce an explosion, whichcould severely injure personnel in the area.

i. Be sure to bleed the accumulatorsbefore any accumulator disassembly is

attempted.

j. Make sure the accumulators are ingood condition. Make sure theaccumulator components have no cracksor signs of excessive wear. Whenpressurized, a damaged accumulatorcould burst, scattering metal fragmentsthroughout the area which could severelyinjure personnel.

GENERAL.

The YH80A Hydraulic Drifter (drifter) is avalved, hydraulically--operated hammerdrill that incorporates an integral, indepen-dently--controlled, hydraulically--poweredrotation motor to rotate the drill steel andbit.

The drifter is capable of drilling 3 to 4 in. (75to 102 mm) diameter holes in all types ofrock formations. It is especially suitable forpipeline work, drilling vertical and angleholes in quarries, and on any constructionjobs where large volume rock excavationsare required.

ROTATION MOTOR.

The hydraulically--powered rotation motoris independently controlled and is de-signed to provide continuous drill steel ro-tation -- forward or reverse. Themotor con-verts hydraulic fluid to rotation power andtransmits the rotation power to the spurgear train housed in the drifter fronthead. The hydraulic rotation motor providessmooth, powerful rotation, especially at lowrotation speeds, and assures the operatorof positive rotation control under all drillingconditions.

BLOWER TUBE.

The drifter has a single blower tube con-struction. The blower tube carries holecleaning air from the inlet connection in thebackhead, through the center of the drifter, striking bar, steel and bit to the bottom ofthe hole without contacting any of the inter-nal parts of the drifter.

CHUCK PARTS.

The standard drifter is equippedwith chuckparts to accommodate a 6--spline strikingbar. The reverse percussion drifter is

equipped with chuck parts to accommo-date a 8--spline striking bar.

ACCUMULATORS.

The drifter uses three built--in nitrogen--charged, diaphragm--type accumulators todampen vibrations in the supply and returnlines. The high pressure accumulatorsmust be charged to 853 psi (60 kg/cm2)and the low pressure accumulators mustbe charged to 57 psi (4 kg/cm2).

An accumulator charging kit is fur-nished as an accessory item with themachine on which the drifter is used.

FRONT END LUBRICATION.

The drifter uses an oil mist to provide lubri-cation to all critical points in the front end ofthe drifter. A 3/8 in. (9.5 mm) diameterhose line connected to the drifter carriesthe oil--laden air from a lubricator (part ofthe drilling machine) to the drifter front endparts. Oil flow is controlled by the lubricatorlocated on the drilling machine.

11. SAFETY PRECAUTIONS.

The Safety Precautions listed are intendedtomake all personnel aware of the hazardswhile working on or near this drifter. All per-sonnel must use common sense and agood working practice while operating andmaintaining this equipment. These safetyprecautions listed are of a general natureand cannot cover every possible situation:

18. Do not attempt to operate the hydraulicdrifter unless you are thoroughly famil-iar with all the crawler gauges, controls, and functions. Refer to the section ofthe crawler instruction book for detailedinstructions. Failure to comply could re-sult in bodily injury.

19. Use only Ingersoll--Rand replace--ment parts.

20. Always wear approved hard hat, safetyshoes, safety glasses, nose mask andear protection when near a drifter in op-eration.

21. Keep hands, arms, legs and clothingaway from all moving parts. Failure tocomply could result in bodily injury.

22. The drifter, striking bar, couplings, drillsteels and bit are hot during the drillingoperation. Do not touch these partswith your bare hands. Wear gloves toprotect your hands when you arechanging bits or steels. A severe burnwill result if rotating parts are touchedwith bare hands.

23. Keep all hose connections tight. Aloose hose connection not only causesleaks and poor performance, but mayalso allow the hose to come off the drift-er, whip around, and injure the operatoror other people in the area.

24. Make sure that the parts--cleaning sol-vent is non--flammable, will not harmthe skin, meets current safety andhealth standards, and is used in wellventilated area.

25. Dry nitrogen is the only gas product tobe used to charge the drifter accumula-tors. Never use oxygen to charge theaccumulators. Ignition of an oxygenand oil mixture could produce an explo-sion, which could severely injure per-sonnel in the area.

26. Make sure the accumulators are ingood condition. Make sure the accu-mulator components have no cracks orsigns of excessive wear. When pres-surized, a damaged accumulator couldburst, scattering metal fragmentsthroughout the area which could se-verely injure personnel.

27. Be sure to bleed the accumulators be-fore any accumulator disassembly is at-tempted.

12.INTRODUCTION.

This section provides a description andspecifications of the Hydraulic Drifter Mod-els YH80A (hereafter referred to as drifter).

13.DESCRIPTION.

The hydraulic drifter is a valved, hydrauli-cally--operated hammer drill that incorpo-rates an integral, independently--con-trolled, hydraulically--powered rotationmo-tor to rotate the drill steel and bit.

The drifter is capable of drilling 3 to 4 in. (76to 102mm) diameter holes in all types ofrock formations. It is especially suitable forpipeline work, drilling vertical and angleblast holes in quarries, and on any con-struction jobs where large volume rock ex-cavations are required.

Since the drifter is hydraulic, there are onlytwomoving parts to control hammer action:the piston and the piston valve. The pistonprovides the impact force which is trans-mitted to the drill steel. The valvealternate-ly switches pressure from supply to ex-haust. This action produces a high fre-quency reciprocation of 2600 cycles perminute. The piston strikes the striking baron each forward (power ) stroke, thus, transmitting the blow energy through thesteel to the bit at 2600 blows per minute.

The hydraulically--powered rotation motoris independently controlled and is de-signed to provide continuous drill steel ro-tation--forward or reverse. The motor con-

verts hydraulic fluid to rotation power andtransmits the rotation power to the spurgear train housed in the drifter fronthead. The hydraulic rotation motor providessmooth, powerful rotation, especially at lowrotation speeds, and assures the operatorof positive rotation control under all drillingconditions.

Since hammer action anddrill steel rotationare independently controlled, the bestcombination of individual control of bothfunctions can be selected for the most effi-cient drilling in a particular formation.

Since the drifter operates on hydraulic fluidpower, instead of air, its operation is unaf-fected by altitude. In addition, there is nonoise fromair exhaust and no fog buildup inworking areas.

The only air requirements for the drifter are:for hole cleaning and fronthead lubrication. The drifter is equipped with a 3/4 in.(19mm) outside diameter blower tubewhich carries hole cleaning air from the in-let connection in the backhead, through thecenter of the drifter, striking bar, drill steeland bit to the bottom of the hole withoutcontacting any of the internal parts of thedrifter.

THE DRIFTER ACCUMULATORSREQUIRE CHECKING EVERY 250HOURS OF OPERATION. REFERTO SECTION 5, PARAGRAPH 20.

Page 2, Section 3, IM6105

The drifter uses three nitrogen--chargeddiaphragm accumulators to dampen vibra-tions in the supply and return hoses. Thesupply line (high pressure) accumulatormust be charged to 853 psi (60 kg/cm2).The return line (low pressure) accumulatormust be charged to 57 psi (4 kg/cm2). Anaccumulator charging kit is furnished as astandard accessory itemwith the hydraulicmachine.

The drifter is designed with chuck parts toaccommodate a 6--splined striking bar.The reverse percussion model is designedwith chuck parts to accommodate a8--splined striking bar. A striking bar is notfurnished as standard equipment with thedrifter. The required striking bar must bespecially ordered. Refer to Table 3 for thepart number of the striking bars available

for use with the drifter and the specifica-tions of the striking bars.

An optional reverse percussion kit is avail-able for the drifter. This option helps in therecovery of jammed bits and rods in frac-tured ground. (This option uses a 8--splinestriking bar).

Do not use the reverse percussion continu-ously for over 10 to 15 seconds.

Upon receipt of a new drifter, check thedrifter model number to see that it agreeswith the parts catalog. Attention in this areawill assure that the correct repair parts areordered when needed.

Before releasing a new drifter for service, remove all the shipping plugs from theports. These plugs are used to keep dirtout of the equipment during handling andshipping.

17.HYDRAULIC REQUIREMENTS.

The hydraulic power required to operatethe drifter is divided into two independentfunctions:

a. Hammer Operation -- The hydraulicsystem must be capable of supplying hy-draulic fluid to the drifter at a rate of 29.27gpm (110 liters/min.) at 1991 psi (140 kg/cm2).

b. Drill Steel Rotation -- The hydraulicsystem must be capable of supplying hy-draulic fluid to the rotation motor on thedrifter at a rate of 11.89 gpm (45 liters/min.)at 1991 psi (140 kg/cm2).

Ingersoll--Rand hydraulic crawler ma-chines are designed to use this hydraulicdrifter. Basically, its hydraulic system con-tains a fluid reservoir, which stores a sup-ply of hydraulic oil; pumps, which developand deliver the required hydraulic oil pres-

sure and flow to operate the drifter and itsrotation motor; filters for removing particlecontamination from the oil supply; controlvalves to initiate hammer action and con-trol the speed and direction of the rotationmotor; and an oil cooler to maintain the en-tire system at an optimum operating tem-perature. An arrangement of hoses and fit-tings carries the oil from the reservoirthrough the pumps and regulating controlsto the drifter and rotationmotor and back tothe reservoir through the oil cooler.

18.LUBRICATION REQUIREMENTS.

The drifter uses an oil mist to provide lubri-cation to all critical points in the front end ofthe drifter. A 3/8 in. (9.5 mm) diameterhose, connected to the drifter, carries theoil--laden air from a lubricator (part of drill-ing machine) to the front end of the drifter. The amount of lubrication provided is con-trolled by the lubricator located on the drill-ing machine.

19.AIR REQUIREMENTS.

The air requirements for the drifter are forfront end lubrication and hole cleaning. Fornormal drilling conditions, a minimum flowof 10 scfm (.28 m3/min.) at a pressure of100 psi (7.03 kg/cm2) is required for lubri-cation and the remaining air for hole clean-ing.

20.HOSES AND FITTINGS.

Only quality hose designed especially forrock drill service should be used. It shouldbe constructed with an outer coveringwhich resists abrasive wear and have aworking pressure safety factor of at least 4to 1 in relation to burst.

Hoses and hose fittings must be in goodcondition, and the fittings must be kepttight.

The following lists the hoses required to op-erate the drifter and the diameter of eachhose:

a. Inlet Hydraulic Hose -- 3/4 in. (19 mm)diameter.

b. Return Hydraulic Hose -- 3/4 in. (19mm) diameter.

c. Forward Rotation Hydraulic Hose -- 1/2in. (12.7 mm) diameter.

d. Reverse Rotation Hydraulic Hose -- 1/2in. (12.7 mm) diameter.

e. Front End Lubrication Hose -- 3/8 in.(9.5 mm) diameter.

21.BASIC OPERATING PRINCIPLES.

The operation of the drifter is based on twoindependent basic operating principles: (a)the principle that causes thepiston to recip-rocate (i.e., hammer action) and (b) theprinciple governing the drill steel rotation.

22.DRILL PISTON RECIPROCATION.

The drifter is a valved hydraulic drill. Thevalve cylinder assembly and cylinder linerconvert hydraulic fluid pressure into effi-cient hammer action. The piston within thecylinder liner provides the impact forcewhich is transmitted to the drill steel. Thevalve alternately switches pressure fromsupply to exhaust. This action produces ahigh frequency reciprocating action of2600 cycles per minute. The piston strikesthe striking bar on each forward (power)stroke, and through the striking bar andsteel, drives the drill bit into the rock at 2600blows per minute.

23.DRILL STEEL ROTATION.

The drifter is designed with an independ-ently--controlled, hydraulic--powered, rota-tion motor that provides continuous drillsteel rotation -- forward or reverse.

The motor converts hydraulic fluid to rota-tion powerand transmits the rotationpower

Page 34: PARTS LIST For Hydraulic Drifter Model: YH80Arockdrills.net/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/YH80A-AND-RP-PARTS-LIST.pdfPARTS LIST For Hydraulic Drifter Model: YH80A Read this instruction

to a drive gearwhich is part of the spur geartrain housed in the drill fronthead. Thus, asthe drive gear is rotated, the meshingchuck gear and mating chuck driver followthe rotation. Splineswithin the chuckdrivermate with those in the striking bar, therebyimparting the rotation through the drill steelto the bit.

24. OPERATING CONTROLS.

Hammer action, drill steel rotation and feedare controlled separately andeachmust beregulated for optimum results in the drillingconditions encountered. All operating con-trols for the drifter are located on the drillingmachine console. Refer to the operationsection of the drilling machine instructionbook for detailed descriptions and instruc-tions covering all operating controls andgauges.

25. CHARGING THE DRIFTER

ACCUMULATORS.

The drifter uses nitrogen accumulators todampen vibrations in the pressure and re-turn hoses. Before operating the drifter, both accumulatorsmust be charged. Referto Section 3, Table 1 for charging require-ments!

Local codes and local supply and refill re-quirements prohibit Ingersoll--Rand sup-plying nitrogen gas cylinders.

An accumulator charging kit is furnished asa standard accessory item with the drillingmachine.

The following DANGER Precautions mustbe observed when charging the drifter ac-cumulators:

DRY NITROGEN IS THE ONLY GASPRODUCT TO BE USED TO CHARGE

THE DRILL ACCUMULATORS. NEVERUSE OXYGEN TO CHARGE THE ACCU-MULATORS. IGNITION OF AN OXYGENAND OIL MIXTURE IN THE ACCUMULA-TOR COULD PRODUCE AN EXPLO-SION, WHICH COULD SEVERELY IN-JURE PERSONNEL IN THE AREA.

MAKE SURE THE ACCUMULATORSARE IN GOOD CONDITION. MAKESURE THE ACCUMULATOR HOUSINGHAS NO CRACKS OR SIGNS OF EX-CESSIVE WEAR. A DAMAGED ACCU-MULATOR COULD RUPTURE AND SE-VERELY INJURE PERSONNEL.

To charge the drifter accumulators, pro-ceed as follows:

a. Using a spanner wrench, remove theprotective caps from the accumulator cov-ers on both accumulators.

b. Loosen the accumulator valve slightly(about 1/8 of a turn).

c. Attach the charge valve assembly tothe accumulator, turning the assemblyhand tight.

d. Connect the nitrogen bottle hose to thecharge valve assembly charging port.

e. Make sure the discharge valve on theside of the charging valve assembly isclosed. (Turning clockwise closes thevalve).

f. Turn the charge valve on top of thecharging valve assembly counter--clock-wise to open the accumulator valve. Openvalve three to four turns.

Failure to open the accumulator valve a fullthree to four turns may result in damage tothe seal when the nitrogen bottle valve isopened.

\g. Slowly open (turn counter--clockwise)the valve on the nitrogen bottle and allowthe pressure to build. Close the valvewhenthe pressure reaches proper setting. If thepressure becomes higher, adjust the pres-sure by using the discharge valve on thecharging valve assembly.

h. Close the accumulator valve by turningthe charging valve on the charging valveassembly.

i. Open the discharge valve to releasegas in the charging valve assembly and thehose.

j. Remove the nitrogen bottle hose.

k. Remove the charging valve assembly.

l. Tighten the accumulator valve. Torquethe valve to 22 lb--ft (30 Nm).

m. Replace the accumulator protectivecap.

n. Follow the same procedure to chargethe second and third accumulators. Thedrifter is then ready for service.

26. CONNECTING THE STRIKING BAR

TO THE YH80A DRIFTER.

(Section 5, Figure 1)

It is very important that all threaded acces-sories be properly lubricated and cared forat all times. Proper lubrication will result inlonger part life and will simplify threadingand unthreading of all connections. Makesure that all threads are clean and free ofdirt and coatedwith a high pressure grease(Ingersoll--Rand Drill Steel Lubricant) orequivalent each time they are coupled orstored.

a. Make sure all striking bars andthreaded accessories are properlygreased.

b. Remove the two chuck end cap bolts(76) and nuts (77).

c. Remove the chuck end cap (73), capliner (74) and o--ring (75).

d. Make sure the striking bar is equippedwith a seal and the lip of that seal is facingthe striking bar splines.

e. Coat the striking bar with clean oil andinsert the shank end of the striking bar intothe chuck (72).

f. Insert the chuck end cap liner (74), o--ring (75) and chuck end cap (73) and se-cure with two chuck end cap bolts (78) andnuts (79).

27. CONNECTING THE STRIKING BAR TO

THE YH80ARP DRIFTER.

(Section 5, Figure 2)

It is very important that all threaded acces-sories be properly lubricated and cared forat all times. Proper lubrication will result inlonger part life and will simplify threadingand unthreading of all connections. Makesure that all threads are clean and free ofdirt and coatedwith a high pressure grease(Ingersoll--Rand Drill Steel Lubricant) orequivalent, each time they are coupled orstored.

a. Position the drifter with the reverse per-cussion option resting on the centralizer.

Detach the hose fittings from the reversepercussion option and plug them beforeraising the drifter up and away. This willkeep dirt out and oil from dripping while thetwo parts are separated.

b. Remove the two bolts (90) and nuts(91) which retain the reverse percussion tothe drifter.

c. Raise the drifter up the guide until thereis enough room to insert the striking bar(threaded end first) into the top of the re-verse option.

d. Carefully move the drifter back downthe drill guide onto the striking bar and re-verse percussion option.

e. Install the two bolts (90) and nuts (91).

f. Re--attach the hoses to the reversehousing.

28. DRILLING PROCEDURES.

Detailed operating and drilling instructionsare covered in the operation section of thedrilling machine instruction book.

29. DRILLING TIPS.

To ensure maximum operating efficiency, the following suggestions should be ob-served.

30. SUGGESTIONS FOR DRILLERS.

a. Never pound on stuck steel. Nothing isaccomplished thereby and the drifter andbit may be permanently damaged in theprocess.

b. Never strike the drifter with tools.

c. Every effort must be made to keep dustand dirt from entering the drifter. Prevent-ing impurities from entering the drifter paysoff in improved operation and reduceddown--time for repairs.

d. Always be sure the drifter front endparts are well lubricated. Oil must be de-tected on the striking bar for proper rotationcomponent lubrication. Adjust the oil res-ervoir so that the striking bar always showsanoil film. Refer to drillingmachine instruc-

tion manual for time intervals for checkingoil reservoir. Keep the lubricator well sup-plied with oil at all times.

e. Always keep the drifter aligned with thedrill steel and hole. This assures straightand true holes that go in fast. Most impor-tantly, this prevents unnecessary wear anddamage to the drill.

f. Always use the centralizer to guide thedrill steel during the drilling operation.

31. DRILL STEEL CARE.

a. It is very important that the threads ofthe drill steel be properly lubricated andcared for at all times. Steels havingstripped threads, cracks, or severe gallingmust not be used. Also, care should betaken while drilling not to bend steel or gallthreads due to misuse.

b. Bent steel produces unnecessarystresses and accelerates wear on all fron-thead components. Bent steel and severethread galling can be avoided if the follow-ing steps are taken:

1. Be sure that the steel is bottomed inthe striking bar, couplings, and bit.

2. All threads must be in good condi-tion and well greased.

3. Always drill with a sharp bit (nomorethan 1/8 in. [3.175mm] flat on carbides).Dull bits cause excessive pounding andunnecessary stresses on all threadsand drifter fronthead parts.

4. Approach the rock at reduced feedpressure, position carefully, and collarhole. Once bit is collared in rock, fullfeed pressure may be applied.

5. Always keep sufficient feed pres-sure on steel system. Insufficient feedpressure will cause joints to loosen andthreads will be damaged.

6. Always maintain alignment be-tween the drifter and the hole.

32. BIT CARE.

For long bit life, the instructions as listed inParagraph 17 covering “Drill Steel Care”must also be applied to the bit. In addition, the following steps must also be taken:

a. Never allow the bit to become pluggedwith loose cuttings. Blow the hole continu-ously.

b. Never force or broach the bit into a hole.

c. “Rattle” bits from steel using the drifterhammer actionwith light feed pressureandno rotation. Use a Stillson or bit wrench toremove the bit. Never strike the bit with ahammer.

d. Bit carbides should never be allowed toflatten any greater than 1/8 in. (3.175 mm)between regrinding intervals.

33.INTRODUCTION.

This section provides information on drifterdisassembly, inspection of parts, assem-bly instructions and lubricant specificationsof the Hydraulic Drifter Model YH80A(hereafter referred to as drifter).

34.DESCRIPTION.

The drifter must be included in a definitepreventive maintenance schedule to as-sure top performance and long, efficientservice life. The operating performance isdirectly dependent upon the condition inwhich the working parts and interactingsystems are maintained. The following ar-eas must be included in a preventivemain-

tenance “check--list” to assure reliable andconsistent drifter operation.

35.HYDRAULIC SYSTEM.

Clean hydraulic oil is the life--blood of thedrifter. Without an adequate supply ofclean oil of proper weight at the correctpressure and temperature, the drill cannotoperate properly.

e. Make sure the hydraulic oil is kept freeof dirt. Check that all filters are properly in-stalled and serviced regularly.

f. Hydraulic oil should conform to thespecifications as outlined in the drillingma-chines instruction manual.

g. Maintain the correct level of hydraulicfluid in the hydraulic oil reservoir to preventoverheating and foaming.

Page 39: PARTS LIST For Hydraulic Drifter Model: YH80Arockdrills.net/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/YH80A-AND-RP-PARTS-LIST.pdfPARTS LIST For Hydraulic Drifter Model: YH80A Read this instruction

h. Make sure the systemheat exchangersor radiator type oil coolers are kept free ofdirt.

36.HOSES.

a. Never allow the hydraulic systemhosesto remain uncapped or exposed at anytime. Always cap hoses and fittings imme-diately when disconnecting any part of thehydraulic system.

b. Make sure all hoses are clean beforeconnecting them to any part of the hydrau-lic system.

c. Make sure all hoses are clean beforeconnecting them to the drifter.

d. Always use the proper size hoses.

e. Make sure all hose connections aretight and all hoses, fittings, and adaptersare in top--notch condition.

A LOOSE HOSE CONNECTION NOTONLY CAUSES LEAKS, BUT THE HOSEMAY COME COMPLETELY OFF THETOOL, WHIP AROUND AND CAUSE IN-JURY TO THE OPERATOR.

37.DRIFTER.

a. Never allow the hose adapters on thedrifter to remain uncapped. Dirt contami-nation of the drifter will cause acceleratedwear and drifter failure.

b. Be certain that the striking end of thestriking bar is square, flat and free of allsharp edges. The striking bar should be re-paired or discarded if cracked, peened, orcrowned.

c. Be sure that the hole in the drill steel isopen.

d. Excessively dull bits cause slow drillingand excessive pounding within the drifter.Always change the bit when there is an ap-preciable drop off in drilling speed, or anynoticeable change in the action of the drift-er.

e. Be certain that the drifter front end partsare well lubricated. Oil must be detectedon the striking bar for proper rotation com-ponent lubrication. The amount of lubricat-ing oil provided is controlled by air and oilregulators located at the drilling controlconsole on the drilling machine. Adjust theoil flow so that the striking bar alwaysshows an oil film. Refer to drilling machineinstruction manual for time intervals forchecking oil reservoir. Keep the lubricatorwell supplied with oil at all times. Keep thelubricating oil free of dirt.

f. Schedule regular periods for checkingfront end lubrication. Do not wait for physi-cal evidence of poor lubrication.

g. The drifter fronthead should be takenapart periodically, cleaned, and parts in-spected for wear and distortion.

h. Hydraulic seals and o--rings wear dur-ing normal operation. Hydraulic oil leakagemay be an indication that seals or o--ringsneed to be replaced.

i. If a drifter is not operating properly, in-vestigate the problem as described in Sec-tion 6 covering “Troubleshooting”.

38.LUBRICANT SPECIFICATIONS.

The following paragraphs outline the lubri-cants required for the drifter.

39.HYDRAULIC OIL.

Refer to the instruction manual for the drill-ingmachine for the specifications of the hy-draulic oil.

40.FRONT END LUBRICATING OIL.

(Rock Drill Oil)

KEEP THE ROCK DRILL LUBRICANTCLEAN AND FREE FROM ALL FOREIGNMATTER TO PREVENT DAMAGE TOTHE INTERNAL PARTS.

Ingersoll--Rand offers a complete line ofrock drill oil formulated to provide maxi-mum performance in all types of rock drillequipment. These oils exceed the oilspecifications listed in Table 1.

The rock drill oil used in the air line lubrica-tor must be a well refined petroleum lubri-cating oil. It must be suitably compoundedto provide the specified consistency andfilm strength, and be further compoundedto provide the specified steam emulsionnumber, which is required to provide satis-factory lubricant. Though the compositionof the “film strength” additive is not speci-fied, it must be non--corrosive to both steeland bronze, and contain little or no sulphur.

Ingersoll--Rand Rock Drill Oils are formu-lated to provide maximum performance inall types of rock drill equipment. Use Table2 for selecting the correct viscosity grade tomeet your requirements and Table 3 for se-lecting the correct rock drill oil part number.

41.DRILL STEEL THREAD LUBRICANT.

It is very important that the threads of allstriking bars, drill rods, couplings and bitsbe properly lubricated and cared for at alltimes. Proper lubrication will result inlonger life and will simplify threading andunthreading drill rod joints.

Use a good molybdenum di--sulphide typethread grease such as (Ingersoll--RandDrill Steel Lubricant) or equivalent. (Referto PL6105 “Parts List For Hydraulic DrifterModels YH80A”, for part numbers.)

42. MAINTENANCE.

To ensure maximum life and top perform-ance of the equipment, it is necessary thatthe maintenance be done before seriousdamage occurs. It is important to be cau-tious when performing any service work. Ageneral knowledge of the system and/orcomponents is important before the re-moval or disassembly of any components. The following is a list of basic precautionsthat must always be observed:

a. Never attempt major work on the drifterin the field. The drifter may be in worsecondition after major maintenance wastried in the field than before. Send the drift-er to the shop.

b. Clean the exterior of the drifter beforetearing it down.

c. Use a soft metal, plastic, or wood ham-mer for driving the heavier exterior parts.

d. Handle parts carefully. Hardened partsmight chip or break if dropped on a hardsurface.

e. Clean disassembled parts in a solvent.Probe ports in the backhead, housing, housing liner, drive gear cover, etc. toloosen and remove foreign matter. Placethe small parts in a clean container so theywill not become lost.

WHEN USING ANY SOLVENT TOCLEAN PARTS, MAKE SURE THAT ITMEETS CURRENT SAFETY ANDHEALTH STANDARDS AND THAT IT ISUSED IN AN AREA THAT IS ADE-QUATELY VENTILATED.

43. DRIFTER DISASSEMBLY. (Figure 1)

a. Place the drill guide in a horizontal posi-tion.

b. Feed the drifter down the guide until it isin the most accessible position.

c. Disconnect, plug, and tag the blower airhose, front end lubrication hose, supplyand return hydraulic hoses, and forwardand reverse rotation hydraulic hoses.

53.INTRODUCTION.

This section contains detailed information

for troubleshooting the Hydraulic Drifter Mod-

els YH80A (hereafter referred to as drifter).

54.TROUBLESHOOTING.

Troubleshooting will be accomplished byusing the table provided in this section. Table 1will provide a step by step question and reme-dy. Using both of these together will solvemost common problems.

TROUBLE PROBABLE CAUSE REMEDY

Table 1. Troubleshooting

Drifter will not start. 1. Cold hydraulic oil orwrong hydraulic oil.

2. Drifter valve stuck.

1. Never use hydraulic oil that does notconform to the specifications out-lined inSection 5, Table 1. If ambienttemperature is below 32°F (0°C),drill may be reluctant to start, but itwill start if control valve is left in theon position for a few minutes.

2. Check valve for scoring, burrs, ormechanical interference. Repair orreplace.

Drifter lacks power(hydraulic supplypressure normallyabove 1991 psi[140 kg/cm2]).

1. Low hydraulic oil flow.

2. Leaking seals or o--rings.

3. Piston not hitting strikingbar at full blow.

1. Increase flow setting.

2. Check for tightness of hardware. Ifnecessary, visually inspect seals.

3. Check for excessively worn strikingbar splines or striking bar seat andreplace if necessary. Replace strik-ing bar if shank end is excessivelyworn.

Through boltbreakage.

1. Uneven tension on nutsor loose nuts.

1. Nuts must be tight and under equaltension. Tighten the nuts graduallyand alternately. Refer to Section 5,Table 4.

No steel rotationor rotation isweak.

1. Steel binding in hole.

2. Worn or leaking rotationmo-tor.

3. Incorrectly assembledchuck/drive gear compo-nents or excessively worncomponents.

4. One through bolt brokencausing chuck end binding.

1. Sharpen or replaceworn bits. Ap-ply correct amount of down--pres-sure and keep drill, steel and holein alignment.

2. Repair or replace motor.

3. Check for proper assembly of thechuck/drive gear componentsand for excessively worn compo-nents.

4. Replace broken through bolt. Re-fer toSection 5, Table 4 for torque.

Slow drilling speed. 1. Dull bit.

2. Cuttings not being removedfrom hole.

3. Plugged drill steel.

4. Drifter and steel not alignedwith hole; steel or bit bindingin hole.

5. Worn fronthead compo-nents.

6. Incorrect feed pressure.

7. Accumulators not properlycharged.

1. Replace bit.

2. Increase blow air or water to keepbit working on fresh rock.

3. Remove drill steel, clean out pas-sages.

4. Check alignment while drilling toprevent binding and to avoidstuck steel.

5. Check chuck end componentsand replace if necessary.

6. Adjust feed pressure.

7. Bleed and rechargeaccumulators.

Stuck steel. 1. Driving steel after bit is dullor has lost its gauge.

2. Crowding bit in soft forma-tions.

3. Cuttings not being blownfrom hole.

4. Misalignment of steel withhole causing binding.

1. Don’t force a dull bit, sharpen orreplace with new bit.

2. Use down--pressure cautiously insoft formations; be certain steel isrotating freely.

3. Use blow air continuously.

4. Keep drill steel, and hole in align-ment at all times.

Chipping orbreakage ofpiston.

1. Bad striking bar which is toohard or rounded on end al-lowing minimum contactwith piston striking face.

2. Worn chuck end compo-nents which permit strikingbar to cock in chuck so thatpiston strikes shank a glanc-ing blow.

1. Take bad striking bar out of ser-vice -- one bad striking bar candamage other parts.

2. Replace worn components.
