Editorial: The Narrow Path to Recovery

The severe financial crisis and economic downturn in the called developed countries are at least two years old and the recovery is still very slow and patchy. To alleviate the effects of the financial crisis in the real economy an enormous amount of liquidity and stimulus have been provided (although in different measures by the various nations) in a somewhat co-ordinated effort. As a result the budget deficits have increased well above the regulated limit with an increase in the state’s indebtedness. There is now the need of rebalancing which requires measures of austerity with higher taxes and/or cuts to economic and social support.

It is claimed the cuts should not slow down growth but only penalise inefficiencies and waste. However, it is difficult to be selective when huge amounts are required. There is a real danger that together with the elimination of bad things there could be a loss of good.

In the Italian revised budget which needed to produce a €20 billion euro correction, there has been also a cut of 50% to the support of activities of the Italian chambers abroad, which produced a very modest saving (5 million euro which could jeopardise the promotional effort of the Chamber especially towards the small companies). Several promises have been made to correct this particular measure and we are confident that thanks to the solidarity of the entire Italian system of promotion abroad, solutions will be found.

In the meantime at Partnership our effort and commitment and co-operation will continue to achieve useful results.

100% DESIGN, the UK’s leading contemporary interiors show is taking place in Earls Court in late September. This event runs concurrently with its companion events 100% FUTURES and 100% MATERIALS and is the perfect showcase for stylish Italian products in interior furnishing.

The Italian Trade Commission presence this year has more than doubled. Together with a much larger pavilion featuring the ceramics industry, there will be a quite separate pavilion providing a unique opportunity for creative and innovative new and established Italian designers to display their fresh ideas to companies in the UK.

The show’s core audience is London based architects and interior designers but there are a large number of overseas visitors as London is an acknowledged hub for commercial hospitality projects in the Middle East and Asia, including the vital Chinese market, with over 25000 global design consultancies looking for inspiration for their projects.

The FUTURES section encompasses emerging design talent and puts them in touch with influential manufacturers, retailers and buyers in the international design community. Many of these use this event to commission work as a result of the designers on display. Its sister event 100% MATERIALS is committed to the sourcing of unknown and sustainable materials, processes and components for use in the furnishings industry.

ICE are, for the first time, presenting a collective of companies from the design sector which have been selected and approved by the 100% Design panel. The products on the stand G10 range from furniture to partitioning design elements, lighting and objêts d’art.

Confindustria Ceramica ( The Italian Association for Ceramics ) have exhibited at the show before in collaboration with the Italian Trade Commission and have been very successful in promoting their member companies activities and supply in the UK. This year the stand will also host five individual displays within the pavilion with products ranging from porcelain stoneware to kitchen flooring, tiling and bathroom furniture.

Italian presence at this year’s 100% Design Show has been supplemented by a national advertising campaign in the leading design trade magazines.

ICE (Italian Trade Commission) offices in Perugia and London joined forces and were responsible for organising the impressive Regione Umbria stand at this year’s Farnborough Air Show in late July. The Region featured its aerospace cluster companies with product displays of contract manufacturing of mechanical and electronic components These are already present in most of the major aircraft producers flight programmes and utilise specialist alloys and composite materials. Other products included textiles for cabin interiors, simulators for the space programme, laboratory hydraulics test equipment, prototype design houses and fuselage parts.

The Italian Aerospace industry was well represented in Hampshire from the giant Finmeccanica and Alenia stands to the military helicopters from Agusta (itself a Finmeccanica company) in both static and flying

displays and a number of the most important aerospace clusters including Piemonte, Campania and Puglia in addition to the Regione Umbria stand. This large presence was enhanced by the Italian Space Agency, a major contributor to the European Space effort and A.I.A.D. which is the Italian Industries Federation representing high technology companies involved in the construction of flying platforms and ground systems.

The Farnborough exhibition is biennial and is considered to be one of the most important in the world. It completely takes over the entire town and its sleepy aerodrome for a week transforming the area and creating a focus for all the world’s airlines, component manufacturers and military chiefs to view the latest hardware and network. The show is unique in that it genuinely creates sales on the spot – or, at least, an indication of future sales - giving the manufacturers of both commercial and military aircraft an opportunity to achieve a realistic assessment of their production programmes for the next twenty years.

The last show in 2008 came at the peak of manufacturing activity in both the UK and around the world before the global recession, so anxious eyes were on order levels and the attendance at the 2010 event to determine hopeful signs of recovery in the industry. Farnborough is the world’s largest temporary exhibition with the build up occupying four months prior to the show.

Some of the facts and figures for the Air Show are staggering. Over 3,600 tonnes of structures are transported to the show site for 22 international pavilions and 8 national pavilions with the total show occupying 107,498 square metres and tailor made floor space which would accommodate the Royal Albert Hall no fewer than thirty times.

This year’s exhibition was sold out with an increased number of exhibiting companies (1455) compared to the last event (1393). There were 120,000 trade visitors over 5 days and the two-day public display saw another 108,000 visitors. There were 70 delegations from 44 countries to view 152 aircraft in both static display and active flying displays.

In the “ Meet the Buyer “ programme 46 companies held 800 meetings with over 150 subcontractors and, most encouragingly saw 2781 apprentices to the aerospace industry attend the “futures” programme. There were 1816 media representatives accredited with 22 international television crews, nearly 13,000 online media mentions in the course of the week and 320 broadcast reports about Farnborough.

Orders during the show were back up to 2006 levels with $47 billion actually placed for aircraft. The two stars of the show were Boeing’s new 787 Dreamliner and the Airbus 380 with its military derivative the A400m turboprop monster.

There is considerable interest shown in these aircraft because, commercially, they adopt total different business strategies; the Boeing aircraft plays the eco card by using composite materials in an otherwise conventional airliner to decrease fuel usage with the Airbus choosing the other option by increasing the passenger payload (up to 800 passengers) to minimise the number of journeys, albeit only at larger specially prepared airports to cater for the number of passengers. Both are spectacular and innovative and good news for Rolls- Royce which has the preferred Trent engine option for both aircraft.

The role of the contract manufacturer is paramount in the aerospace industry with the clearest definition of its role being the provision of specialist components to create the eco efficient airliners that will serve the world’s air traffic for the next decade and beyond. This has always

been an area in which the creativity and innovative technical skills of Italian engineering companies have played a major role.

However, providing high tech components in this industry is very often beyond the financial resources of these small and medium sized engineering firms and this has led to the development of the aerospace poles or clusters throughout Europe which enable the pooling of resources and, most importantly, expertise in the development of new materials and innovative products which meet the demanding requirements of a fast changing commercial world.

The majority of the Italian poles showing at Farnborough are affiliated to the European Aerospace Cluster Partnership. This encourages a sharing of experience and supports the development and implementation of realistic projects to further European interests in the ultra-competitive global market.

This year’s Air Show has provided a degree of optimism about the future – at least in commercial marketing terms. There will still be a question mark, particularly in the United Kingdom, about the capability of the military equipment manufacturers to face the twin problems of recessionary cuts in spending coupled with the pressures of the peace dividend. Their future is less certain and will be affected by important decisions soon to be made in the UK about the Trident nuclear armaments programme. However developments in military hardware do impact on commercial materials and there was clear evidence of crossover in electronics systems on commercial craft with their origins in weapons programmes.

Farnborough ended a very successful week by allowing the public an opportunity to see a long list of aircraft both in the sky and on the ground with long queues to see the Dreamliner and A380 and sore necks from the acrobatic displays of Alenia’s Eurofighter, the obligatory visit of the Red Arrows and a host of others for military, rescue and the business travel markets.

The National Gallery - Sainsbury Wing, Admission charge13 OCTOBER 2010 –16 JANUARY 2011‘Antonio Canale…astounds everyone in this city who sees his work, which is like that of Carlevarijs, but you can see the sun shining in it.’(Alessandro Marchesini, painter and adviser to collectors, July 1725

This landmark exhibition presents the finest assembly of Venetian views by Canaletto and his 18th-century rivals to be seen in a generation. Bringing together around 50 major loans from the public and private collections of the UK, Europe and North America, Venice: Canaletto and His Rivals highlights the extraordinary variety of Venetian view painting, juxtaposing masterpieces by Canaletto with key works by artists including Luca Carlevarijs, Michele Marieschi, Bernardo Bellotto and Francesco Guardi.

Featured works span the 18th-century, from one of the first accurately datable Venetian views by Luca Carlevarijs of 1707 to the death of Francesco Guardi in 1793. The age of the veduta (view) reached its zenith around 1740, by which time the acquisition of this choice souvenir had become an important element of the Grand Tour of Italy. In the first half of the century, aristocratic travellers, led by English milordi, fuelled a vibrant and highly competitive market for Venetian view painting which saw artists jostling for commissions and fame. Together they immortalised some of the best-loved landmarks of the city including the Grand Canal, the Piazza San Marco, the Rialto, the Molo, Santa Maria della Salute and the Lagoon.

Foremost among these artists was Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto (1697–1768). Trained, like many of his rivals, as a painter of theatrical scenery, he visited Rome in 1719, which inspired him to try his hand at view painting. In the late 1720s, in response to market demand, he began to replace the moodiness of his earlier works with views bathed in warm sunshine. Within a decade, Canaletto had come to dominate the genre. The exhibition features some of Canaletto’s greatest masterpieces, including The Riva degli Schiavoni, looking West, about 1735 (Sir John Soane’s Museum, London), The Stonemason’s Yard, about 1725 (The National Gallery, London), and four of his finest works from the Royal Collection.

Room 1 opens with a pivotal work by Canaletto’s earliest precursor and the founding father of Italian view painting, Gaspare Vanvitelli (1652/3–1736): The Molo from the Bacino di San Marco, 1697 (Museo Nacional del Prado, Madrid). Trained in the Netherlands and based mostly in Rome, Vanvitelli is thought to have visited Venice in 1695, a trip resulting in some 40 views over the following decades. Yet despite being filled with anecdotal detail, Vanvitelli’s Venice remained distinctly placid in comparison to the work of Canaletto and his contemporaries

X6455, Canaletto The Entrance to the Grand Canal, looking East, with Santa Maria della Salute, 1744 The Royal Collection © 2010, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II

The immediate successor to Vanvitelli and the first view painter in Venice to depend on foreign patronage was Luca Carlevarijs (1663–1730). Important early works by Canaletto – including The Piazza San Marco, looking East, about 1723 (Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza, Madrid) – are displayed alongside depictions of similar locations by Carlevarijs, the artist he had already begun to eclipse.

The largest room of the exhibition celebrates the floating city’s dramatic festivals, regattas and ceremonies, a highlight being Canaletto’s The Molo from the Bacino di San Marco on Ascension Day, about 1733–4 (Royal Collection). Here too, for the first time, Canaletto’s masterpiece, The Reception of the French Ambassador Jacques-Vincent Languet…, about 1727 (The Hermitage, Saint Petersburg) is displayed alongside the pioneering composition by Carlevarijs, The Reception of the British Ambassador Charles Montagu…, about 1707–8 (Birmingham Museums & Art Gallery). During the 1730s and 1740s the only artist to pose a real threat to Canaletto’s domination was Michele Marieschi (1710–1743), perhaps the most spontaneous of the Venetian vedutisti. Comparisons made in Room 2 demonstrate Marieschi’s characteristically broad brushstrokes and fondness for unexpected view points, a highlight being The Rialto Bridge from the Riva del Vin, 1740s (The Hermitage, Saint Petersburg).

Tourism News: VENICE Canaletto and his Rivals

At the height of Canaletto’s fame, his workshop offered the finest training a view painter could receive. Among those to benefit was his precocious nephew, Bernardo Bellotto (1722–1780). By the age of 18 he could already imitate his uncle’s style with extraordinary dexterity and increasingly sought to introduce ‘improving’ flourishes of his own. Having worked closely with Canaletto during his ‘cold’ period of 1738–42, an almost wintry light remained characteristic of Bellotto’s style for the rest of his career. Yet just as characteristic of Bellotto’s style were his uniquely vibrant blue skies, perhaps most dramatic in The Piazzetta, looking North, about 1743 (National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa). During the final decade of his life Canaletto had a new rival – Francesco Guardi (1712–1793) – who was to outlive him by 25 years and to provide a glorious final chapter in the history of Venetian view painting. By the 1770s Guardi was considered something of an authority on Canaletto’s work and throughout his career showed a willingness to borrow his compositions. Yet, as juxtapositions in the final section of the exhibition demonstrate, Guardi’s concerns were very different from those expressed by Canaletto. In his promotion of nature over the works of man, Guardi anticipated the rise of romanticism in the 19th century, and crucially emphasised the fragility of Venice rather than its permanence. Out on the Lagoon, where Venice’s human element is at its most marginal, Guardi appears at his most poetic (View of the Venetian Lagoon with the Tower of Malghera, probably 1770s, The National Gallery, London). While Guardi took this composition from adrawing by Canaletto, his intense concern with mood transforms this quiet backwater into something else entirely.

Venice: Canaletto and His Rivals presents the finest view paintings of one of the world’s most enthralling and beautiful cities. As well as celebrating the great works of Canaletto, one of the best-loved artists in Britain, the exhibition highlights the exceptional achievements of his now less well-known rivals and associates.

BRONZINO ARTIST AND POET EXHIBITION IN FLORENCE

One of the greatest painters of the sixteenth century, the work of Agnolo di Cosimo Tori, known as Bronzino (1503-1572), embodied the fullness of the Mannerist style.

Bronzino. Artist and Poet, the first exhibition to be devoted to his paintings, will be staged at Palazzo Strozzi in Florence from 24 September 2010 to 23 January 2011. It is particularly appropriate that this monographic show should be held in Florence as, not only was he born and died here, he was court artist to Cosimo I de’ Medici (1519-1574), and the majority of his paintings are still to be found in the city, particularly in the Uffizi, and its other museums and churches.

This landmark exhibition, which has taken over four years to prepare, will include loans from the world’s most important museums such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, the Musée du Louvre, Paris, and the Städel Museum, Frankfurt. Visitors will be able to admire 56 works by the artist himself, shown alongside others by his

contemporaries such as Pontormo, Cellini, Niccolò di Raffaello di Niccolò dei Pericoli, called Il Tribolo, Bandinelli, Pierino da Vinci and Alessandro Allori, as well as works by the artists that re-elaborated his style later. The exhibition will be divided into chapters devoted to crucial phases, episodes or artistic genres in Bronzino’s work.

Importantly, the show will bring

together a wide variety of Bronzino’s masterpieces, many of them displayed together for the first time. Alongside the works conserved in the Uffizi, the exhibition will present works such as the Adoration of the Shepherds from the Szépművészeti Múzeum in Budapest, the Portrait of Young Man with a Book from the Metropolitan Museum of Art and two versions of the Holy Family and Saint John, from the Louvre and the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna. In addition, the newly restored Panciatichi Crucifix and the lost right-hand panel that was originally part of the Besançon Altarpiece will be on public display for the first time.

The exhibition is curated by Cristina Acidini, Carlo Falciani and Antonio Natali, the foremost experts on the period, who have also contributed essays to the accompanying catalogue.

Focus on the Calabrian Cuisine The cuisine of Calabria is a typical southern Italian Mediterranean cuisine with a balance between meat-based dishes (pork, lamb, goat), vegetables (especially aubergine), and fish. Pasta is also very important in Calabria. In contrast to most other Italian regions, Calabrians have traditionally placed an emphasis on the preservation of their food, partly because the heat and dryness of the mountains inland make crop failure a distinct possibility.

As a result, there is a tradition of packing vegetables and meats in olive oil, making sausages and cold cuts (Sopressata, ‘Nduja), and, along the coast, curing fish- especially swordfish, sardines (Sardelle rosamarina) and cod (Baccalà). Local desserts are typically fried, honey-sweetened pastries (Cudduraci, scalidde) or baked biscotti-type treats. Some local specialties include Caciocavallo Cheese, Cipolla rossa di Tropea (red onion), Frìttuli (fried pork), Liquorice, Lagane e Cicciari (a pasta dish with chickpeas), Pecorino Crotonese and Pignolata.

Although Calabrian wines are not well known outside Italy, in ancient times Calabria was referred to as Enotria (from Ancient Greek “land of wine”). Some vineyards have origins dating back to the ancient Greek colonists. The best known DOC wines are Cirò (Province of Crotone) and Donnici (Province of Cosenza). Many producers are resurrecting local, ancient grape varieties which have been around for as long as 3000 years.

This autumn we will be presenting in London all the best products from the Calabria region. It will be a marvellous opportunity to taste and appreciate these extraordinary products from the heart of the Mediterranean. ECOBUILD AND THE RENEWABLE ENERGY SECTOR

At the most important trade show for eco-sustainability in the UK, Ecobuild 2011, a major role is played by renewable energies accordingly with the trend of the sector which saw an investment growth of 230% since 2005. Several researches find that domestic policy decisions impact the competitive positions of member countries. Those nations—such as China, Brazil, the United Kingdom, Germany and Spain—with strong, national policies aimed at reducing global warming pollution and incentivizing the use of renewable energy are establishing stronger competitive positions in the clean energy economy. China, for example, doubled its wind capacity in 2009 in pursuit of an ambitious target of installing 30 GW of wind by 2020. China also led the G-20 in small hydro capacity and moved aggressively in the solar sector. Germany is the undisputed leader in the solar sector with a total installed capacity of 5.3 GW. Japan and Spain, both with about 2.1 GW, were the next-leading countries for installed solar power capacity.

There are reasons to be concerned about America’s competitive position in the clean energy marketplace. Relative to the size of its economy, the United States’ clean energy finance and investments lag behind many of its G-20 partners.

Clean energy investment in Italy constitutes 2.3 percent of the G-20 total, ranking it ninth. Italy has high electricity prices and it is the first country in which solar power has achieved parity with other electric sources. Italy’s clean energy investment grew 110 percent during the past five years. Under EU policy, Italy has a target to generate at least 25 percent of its electricity from renewables. It offers feed-in tariffs for solar and wind while it subsidizes 30 percent of the capital expenditure cost of biomass power.

Nearly 10 percent of G-20 clean energy investment in 2009 occurred in the United Kingdom, earning it third place. The United Kingdom has been focused primarily on wind energy, with major funding directed toward the development of offshore wind power. Its targets include procuring 20 percent of its electricity and 10 percent of its fuel needs from renewables by the end of 2010. The United Kingdom’s renewable energy standard allows trading of permits. Italy and UK are very interesting countries for investors and operators; accordingly with these statistics Ecobuild become the best showcase and an amazing meeting point for all the companies and institutional bodies in the sector.

Michael Wells-Greco, Collyer Bristow LLPThe general rule is that a UK incorporated company is automatically treated as UK tax resident. By contrast, a non-UK incorporated company - and any trusts of which it is sole trustee - is only likely to be treated as UK tax resident if its ‘central, management and control’ is located in the UK. The risk of an offshore company being treated as UK resident is one faced by many family structures. Concern particularly arises where there are UK resident directors or shareholders.

‘Central, management and control’ refers to a company’s highest level of control. There remains a distinction between a company’s management and its administration (e.g. filing the requisite company forms). A company can be managed and controlled from the UK even if it is administered elsewhere. The 2009 decision in Laerstate BV v HMRC (where the Tribunal held that the Dutch company’s management was, in reality, undertaken from the UK by its sole shareholder) offers a helpful indication of good practice to avoid a non-UK company becoming UK tax resident:

1. The crucial question is often where the fundamental decisions about the company, particularly policy, strategic and management matters, are taken. Both what is done in and outside the UK must be considered.

2. The members of the board should be persons capable of making a real contribution to the business of the company. They should not be nominees merely implementing instructions received from elsewhere.

3. All board meetings should take place physically outside the UK, preferably in the same location so as to demonstrate that there is a defined place where central management and control of the company is located.

4. A majority of the board should be non-UK resident for UK tax purposes. This means that if a board consists of 3 individuals at least 2 should be non-UK resident. The Tribunal in Laerstate BV

acknowledged that merely having a UK resident director (even if 1 of 2) will not mean that the company is, per se, UK resident.

5. In order to ensure that non-UK residence is not prejudiced, no individuals resident in the UK should be acting in such a way that they could be considered to be a ‘shadow’ director (an individual who exercises functions of management and control without being a registered director).

6. All board minutes should be fully and carefully minuted. As far as possible all books of account and corporate records should be kept outside the UK.

Northwest continues to lead the way for Foreign Direct Investment successNorthwest is the leading region outside of London and the South East.• 179 investment projects creating/safeguarding 13,486 jobs

• 259 jobs created or safeguarded every week

• 15 inward investment projects secured every month

Investment by overseas companies created or safeguarded 13,486 jobs in the Northwest over the last year, UK Trade & Investment and the Northwest Regional Development Agency (NWDA) announced today.

The NWDA can reveal that England’s Northwest is, for the 4th consecutive year, the UK’s leading region for Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) outside of London and the South East.

The Northwest has attracted 179 investment projects during 2009/10, more than any other region outside the South East.

Steven Broomhead, NWDA Chief Executive, said:

“Despite difficult economic conditions and fierce competition the Northwest has secured a further set of impressive foreign investment results. The successful figures published this week reaffirm the NWDAs strategy, focus and investment into FDI activity”

The collaboration between the NWDA and sub-regional partners, including The Mersey Partnership, MIDAS, Lancashire Economic Partnership, Cheshire & Warrington Economic Alliance and Invest in Cumbria, has contributed to the impressive results.

The report also shows that the NWDA investment has already generated over £56m in GVA with a massive estimated boost of up to £104m* in additional economic value to the region by 2013 when all of the FDI activity has fully matured.

We meet Tim Etchells, owner of Single Market Events, who recently bought La Dolce Vita, the UK’s only lifestyle receiving around 17,000 visitors. It promotes the best of ‘Made in Italy’ including food, wine, property, travel and design

The show, taking place from 10 – 13 March 2011, is now in its seventh year and is partnered by the Italian Chamber of Commerce & Industry for the UK.

Q.: How and why did you get into the world of events?

A: In the early 1970s I was selling Photocopy machines and I was looking for something different to do and I was given the opportunity to join an event company in a very junior position. I then worked my way up the business and then I started my own business Single Market Events with one idea and two people!

Q. You’ve been in the industry for over 30 years – what are the achievements you are most proud of?

A: There are many but being part of the team that won the License to run The British International Show in 2004 certainly ranks fairly high. Creating The BBC Good Food Show in 1990 and being one of the first people to discover Jamie Oliver and putting him on a stage for the first time. Most recently coming up with the idea to stage the first ever high-end Contemporary Art Fair in Hong Kong that in only three years has become the largest art fair in Asia.

Q. Any moments you’d rather forget?

A: Many! You have to have failures so that you can learn by your mistakes. My most expensive error was launching The Cosmopolitan magazine show in London in 1998. I lost 500,000 pounds of my own money in 3 days! I’d also like to try and forget the times when I tried to be a pop Promoter!

Q. What was your reason for investing in La Dolce Vita?

A: I’ve been involved in events like London Fashion Week and The BBC Good food show for over twenty years so I have a good understanding of running events that involve Style and good food and good wine. I was also a visitor to the early years of La Dolce Vita when I was looking to buy a house in Italy and I’ve always enjoyed the event as I think it’s a great visitor experience.

Q. What are the plans to reinvigorate La Dolce Vita?

A: We’re still working on them and we’ll be revealing them very soon but it will stay with it’s core values of celebrating and showcasing the best that Italy has to offer in terms of property, style, travel and food and wine but most importantly a great experience for exhibitors and visitors alike.

Q. In these times of continuing financial constraint what benefits are there for companies to participate in the show?

A: We are very aware that the show must represent a good Return on Investment for all exhibitors and sponsors and we have not increased our exhibitor space rates this year and we will increase the investment in the look of the show and visitor marketing to ensure that we deliver a good audience who are totally relevant to the exhibitors.

News from Scotland

Water turns into energy in Scotland Scotland boasts some of the best energy resources in Europe. The region is a net exporter of electric energy, with a generation capacity of 10.1GW which mainly comes from coal, oil, gas and nuclear power. As far as the development of the renewable energy sources is concerned, Scotland is thought to have considerable potential, in particular when it comes to wind and tidal power. The major companies of the sector are Scottish Power, Scottish and Southern Energy and British Energy, whereas the main countries to which Scotland exports are USA, The Netherlands, Germany, France and Spain.

“The renewable energy sector is rising steeply” states Mr Martin McAdam, managing director of Aquamarine Power. The latter, in cooperation with Scottish and Southern Energy, provides the region with as much energy as 200 megawatt. Currently, it is the major producer of renewable energy in the UK.

Thanks to their position, that is tight between the Atlantic Ocean and the North Sea, the waters surrounding the Scottish coast release plenty of energy. The waves crashing against the coasts of the Orkney Islands are 2m high on average but they can even exceed 10m. As a matter of fact, from these waves you can gather about 15-20% of the total energy demand of the country.

Ten new plants are being planned at the sea in the north of Scotland with the aim to take advantage of barrage tidal and wave power to generate clean electric power.

The Government gave the go-ahead to new and significant projects to use renewable energy from the sea: 6 projects for the wave power and 4 for the tidal power. In 2013 they will start working on these new plants close to the Orkney Islands, which will be able to release 1,2 gigawatt of energy. This is quite an important step for the UK, in which only small and experimental plants have been installed so far.

The ten new Scottish plants are part of a wider project of the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC), which sees to part of the budget needed. These new plants will have to prove they work properly in spite of a long stay in the waters of the sea. They represent a compelling challenge: several prototypes did not cope with the strength of the sea. An example is to be found in the barrage tidal power prototypes installed in the East River of New York in 2007 or rather in the Pelamis Wave Power generators installed off Portugal. Both cases were not successful due to the technical problems and the unexpected riptides. Neil Kermode, managing director of EMEC, says that the technologies for the exploitation of the ocean energy are still being developed and they will need to overcome many obstacles before becoming fully operative. The majority of the generators which will be installed in the sea surrounding the Orkney Islands are second-generation ones: much more enhanced and with an improved technology with respect to the current ones. All the schemes for the barrage tidal power installed in the Scottish sites will use turbines located under the sea, which will be quiet and hidden from the surface. Some of them, like those produced by OpenHydro, will use a simple but strong technology and they will be situated in the sea bed without any risks for the maritime traffic. Others, like the ones of Marine Current Turbines and of Hammerfest Strom, look like wind power stations put in operation by sea water instead of wind.

To be on the safe side when carrying out large-scale plants, the companies are hoping to be able to test the same schemes on a smaller scale as much as it is needed, so that they can evaluate meticulously the feasibility of each single project.

The schemes to be installed in Scotland are very expensive to carry out. As a matter of fact, the Government is going to help financially the companies, as already scheduled in range of the renewable energy development of the country.

Lately the Government has included plants for the exploitation of the ocean energy in a wide environmental impact assessment planning which aims to protect the sustainable development of coasts. This is why the ten sites which will see the installation of the new plants will need to be checked from an environmental point of view, too. Experts explain that it is necessary to have a detailed environmental impact assessment for each site and to study meticulously the best technology for them, starting from the features they present.

As the new renewable energy technologies conquered the Scottish sea, they are likely to reach other important achievements in other areas of the planet, with new projects for the exploitation of wave and tidal power. Exactly like as happened in Denmark when wind power stations were installed in the ‘70s and ‘80s. Since then they have achieved important positions in the international energy market. Murabilia 20103rd – 5th September 2010 Lucca, Italy

The Edinburgh Office of the Italian Chamber of Commerce in collaboration with Opera delle Mura, Municipality of Lucca and Gardening Scotland organized a Scottish delegation to visit the Murabilia Flower Show, a gardening exhibition and market dedicated to the green world in all its forms, which took place from 3rd-5th September. Displaying a wide range of rare and unique plants and flowers, it hosted as well high quality garden furniture, handcraft pots, baskets, clothes, gardening equipment as well as specialised magazines and publications. In co-operation with the Botanical Gardens of Lucca, this annual garden show was an important showcase for gardeners and amateurs who take pleasure in plants, flowers and the garden in all its varied forms.

The show, in its 10th edition, featured over 150 exhibitors including nurseries and specialist growers from all over Europe. The centrepiece of this year’s event was “Orchids, Opuntia (commonly known as cactus) and edible plants”.

This represented a significant opportunity to strengthen the cultural and commercial links between Scotland and Tuscany. In fact, today there are 30.000 Italians-Scots in Scotland, whose origins are from Tuscany, and Glasgow has the third largest contingent of people from Italian extraction in the UK after London and Manchester.
