Editorial: How sport has assisted the Italian imageMany times we have mentioned how the work and the success of the Italian presence abroad assists the improvement of economic cooperation between Italy and other countries where Italians work.

In England this phenomenon started many years ago, mainly due to the initial immigration and primarily related to the agri-food sector.

During the last few years the Italian community has been represented by a multitude of professional services, but in the last period also sports has featured in promoting our country. At Partnership we want to send congratulations to all the Italian coaches of English football teams, who have achieved, not without difficulty, the goals long hoped for by their fans.

Mancini, in particular, guided Manchester City to win the Premier League after 44 years, while Di Matteo led a London team (Chelsea) to win the European League Championship for the first time in its history.

Mancini celebrated the victory wrapped in the Italian flag and this image has remained on television for dozens of days. It has inevitably a strong value for the promotion of our Country in the world.

Marca Treviso in London:The Consortium “Marca Treviso”, was in London on March 29, to present the tourist offer of the Province of Treviso to journalists and tour operators, during an event organised by the Italian State Tourist Board (ENIT-Agenzia) in co-operation with the Italian Cultural Institute.

The event, which took place during the Italian Cinema Week in London with the presence of the Treviso Film Commission, was well attended by guests. Amongst the themes of the presentation: the Prosecco Spring, Palladio’s and Giorgione’s Villas, the forthcoming Canova exhibition, active and environmental tourism.

The presentation was followed by a buffet lunch and a prize draw.

Sardinia Workshop:The Italian State Tourist Board (ENIT-Agenzia), in co-operation with the Italian Cultural Institute, organised together with Regione Sardegna, a workshop between the Sardinian tourist offer and British Tour Operators that took place on April 17 at the Italian Cultural Institute.

The event, the last of 5 European appointments for the Region, was well attended by British Tour Operators selected by ENIT, who had a chance to hear an inspiring presentation about Sardinia and then meet the representatives of the best in the hospitality industry that the island can offer: from resorts to hotels, from villas to city hotels.

The meeting offered a perfect opportunity to awaken an interest in the Region and its tourism offer, from MICE to more traditional sectors such as active holidays, sun&sea, religious & cultural tourism, school trips, and to provide a starting point for future business.

The British market is the third European market for number of arrivals to Sardinia (65,000 British tourists/ 300,000 overnight stays in 2011), thanks also to good budget flights, and the Region is working hard to significantly improve and increase those figures in 2012.

ABTOI/ENIT/REGIONE PUGLIA “Meet the Media Lunch” 1 May 2012:The Italian State Tourist Board (ENIT-Agenzia) and ABTOI (Association of British Tour Organisers for Italy) have organised the first “Meet the Media Lunch” of 2012 at Sartoria, in London.

This highly successful event, already tested last year, was sponsored by Puglia Promozione and the chosen theme of the day was “Long breaks and authentic Masserie”. About 10 tourism journalists, who write for national and regional newspapers and magazines, had the opportunity to meet 10 ABTOI members as well as the Puglia region and Enit representatives and gather up-dated information, ideas for articles and press trips, details of tours, weekend breaks and holidays in the Puglia Region.

EMILIA-ROMAGNA STILL OPEN FOR TOURISM JOINT STATEMENT BY MR ERRANI, TONDO AND ZAIA – PRESIDENTS OF THE REGIONS EMILIA-ROMAGNA, FRIULI-VENEZIA-GIULIA AND VENETO - TO FOREIGN TOURISTS: “CONTINUE TO CHOOSE THE BEACHES OF THE UPPER ADRIATIC. THEY ARE SAFE AND WELCOMING AS EVER”.

After the earthquake that recently struck Northern Italy, the three governors wish to reassure Italian and foreign tourists on the safety of their holidays and the continuing quality of the local tourist hospitality system, which remains a true guarantee of Italian excellence, and invite them to enjoy a quiet and peaceful holiday on the coasts of the Upper Adriatic.

Mr Errani, Tondo and Zaia share the preoccupations expressed by all tourist operators of the Upper Adriatic, and draw attention once again to their hospitality offer, which remains at the highest levels of competitiveness, safety and appeal in all resorts of Emilia Romagna, Veneto and Friuli.

As Vasco Errani, President of Emilia Romagna, declares: “Most of Italy’s tourist industry is concentrated in the area of the Upper Adriatic”. By now the summer season has started, and the resorts of Emilia Romagna, Veneto and Friuli Venezia Giulia are, as always, ready to welcome guests from all over the world. We have a message for all those visitors who every year choose the beaches of Emilia Romagna, Veneto and Friuli for their holidays. Some parts of Italy have recently been struck by a terrible disaster, but our coasts have

not been affected, and as always are fully equipped and ready to welcome all those guests from Italy and abroad wishing to spend their holidays with us. All communication routes, including roads, motorways and airports, are open.”

“Our hoteliers and all other operators of the tourist branch,” adds Renzo Tondo, President of Friuli, “are hard at work with their usual skills, tenacity and great professionalism to guarantee the first-class hospitality that has always distinguished us, ensuring that once again our guests will receive the high-quality holidays to which they are accustomed.”

Luca Zaia, President of Veneto, continues: “We launch an appeal to our foreign guests to continue to visit us, to avoid us being unjustly penalized, which would add further damage to that already existing. Tourism is one of the main industries of the Upper Adriatic, and has significant effects on our economic indicators. The best way to help those who are suffering today is for our foreign guests to continue to choose our holiday resorts, confident that here they will find a safe and enjoyable welcome. As always.”Further information on Emilia-Romagna Region: www.emiliaromaturismo.it

Chamber Benefactor Member Case New Holland receives high praise from David Cameron.

CNH’s manufacturing plant in Basildon, UK, received a recent visit by UK Prime Minister David Cameron and UK Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg.

Held in the presence of national and local press, the event was attended by Franco Fusignani, Head of New Holland Agricultural Equipment and of CNH International, Eduardo Teodorani-Fabbri, Head of CNH Corporate Development, and Derek Neilson, Head of Agricultural Manufacturing.

The Basildon manufacturing facility has a 47-year tradition of producing tractors for the medium-high market segment. Since its establishment, the factory has produced more than 1.8 million tractors. The site spans 40 hectares and employs around 1,000 people. This CNH plant is the only one that produces the innovative 110-270 horsepower tractor ranges, 92% of which are distributed worldwide. More than 5,000 farmers per year visit these premises and some receive specific training on the product.

“As the only key manufacturer in the UK agricultural equipment sector, we are committed to improving our competitiveness and leveraging the local agricultural heritage and know-how,” remarked Eduardo Teodorani-Fabbri, Head of CNH Corporate Development.

The Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister visited the facility and its 2km assembly line. The plant tour was followed by a Q&A session on site that was attended by around 200 employees.

On this occasion the Prime Minister said, “I was delighted to visit the CNH plant in Basildon and meet its employees. A great example of a growing, successful company, CNH showcases the important role that manufacturing has to play as we work to rebalance our economy and foster sustainable economic growth.”

The Deputy Prime Minister added, “It’s a privilege to see for myself the world leading work going on at CNH and to be able to speak to so many of the people key to that success - the Basildon plant’s workforce. The Coalition Government has been straining every sinew to rebalance the British economy and put manufacturing at its heart. Supporting job creation and growth is our number one priority for Britain. Manufacturing companies like CNH have an important role to play in building the stronger more balanced economy we need.”

“It is an honor for us to welcome the Prime Minister David Cameron and the Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg at our world class manufacturing facility in Basildon and to show our best in class products. I am proud to say that at this site we produce a tractor every four minutes and that the value of the production in 2011 exceeded 1.2 billion pounds,” commented Mr. Fusignani.

CNH UK belongs to the top 15 UK export companies and its products are exported to approximately 120 countries worldwide.

CNH Global N.V. is a world leader in the agricultural and construction equipment businesses. Supported by approximately 11,300 dealers in approximately 170 countries, CNH brings together the knowledge and heritage of its Case and New Holland brand families with the strength and resources of its worldwide commercial, industrial, product support and finance organisations. CNH Global N.V., whose stock is listed on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE:CNH), is a majority-owned subsidiary of Fiat Industrial S.p.A. (FI.MI). Recipe of the Season by Milan pastry chef Angelo Principe

YOGHURT BIANCOMANGIARE Ingredients

8 portions

150 g fresh whole milk•125 g powdered sugar•1/2 of vanilla bean •350 g whole yoghurt •250 g fresh cream•4 and 1/4 leaves of gelatin (8,5 g) •

Instructions:

Remove the yoghurt from the fridge half an hour before using it, as it shouldn’t be too cold. Soak the gelatin leaves in cold water. Cut the vanilla bean in half lengthwise and extract the seeds. Put them in a pan together with milk and sugar and warm it all up until the first signs of boil. Remove from heat and add the gelatin, but first squeeze the water out of it. Mix thoroughly, filter and bring down to room temperature, stirring occasionally. Using a whisk, slowly combine the yoghurt with sweetened milk and stir carefully. Whip the cream, but don’t make it too thick. Gradually pour the milk and yoghurt mixture into the cream, slowly whisking it. Spread into 8 dessert containers and let it cool down in the fridge for a couple of hours. When serving, take the dessert out of each of the containers and place it on a plate. Add strawberry sauce.

Note: the Biancomangiare dessert can be served in little glasses with strawberry sauce on the top. This way you avoid the risky operation of emptying the dessert containers.

BALSAMIC STRAWBERRY SAUCE Ingredients

500 g of strawberries•1 spoon of lemon juice•2 or 3 spoons of brown sugar•1 spoon of balsamic vinegar•

Instructions:

Wash the strawberries and cut them into cubes. Then, sprinkle them with lemon juice and a tablespoon of brown sugar and let it stand for 15 minutes. Put the strawberries in a pan and cook for a couple of minutes, adding a little bit of good quality balsamic vinegar. Let the sauce stand for a bit and serve at room temperature.

The Azerbaijan team at the 2012 London Olympics will be seen wearing outfits designed by the well-known Italian fashion designer Ermanno Scervino. Azerbaijan is a promising and young team, which already won seven medals at the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008 and which will see about 30 athletes taking part at the Olympics this year.

Spokesperson for the Azerbaijan ministry said that “Italian fashion designer Toni Scervino won a bid to create specific pieces for the Azerbaijan national team as he has managed to blend the Azerbaijani national elements with originality and specificity”. The bid involved Italian, Russian, Slovenian and Swiss designers.

Mr. Scervino, in a two-day visit to Baku, presented prototype designs of sports apparel that would be worn by Azerbaijani athletes during the Olympic Games. He, however, added that the presented designs may slightly change in future. The sportswear, according to the designer, will be dominated by the colour green and will have traditional Azerbaijani symbols. The Italian designer has also created a line of evening dresses for the Olympics.

The fashion house of Ermanno Scervino was founded in Florence in 1997 by the fusion of creativity of the designer Ermanno Scervino and the entrepreneur Toni Scervino. In 2000 Ermanno Scervino became a brand and started to grow by the acquisition of new factories and the inauguration of new shops. In 2010 the brand counted more than 500 multibrand shops and 35 flagship shops in Europe, Corea, Russia and Japan, including the flagship shop in Sloane Street Knightsbridge (London).

Mr Scervino has developed unconventional, original style solutions by inventing a new style of “sport couture”, which was embodied in a collection of evening jackets. Among his famous loyal clients are Sharon Stone and Uma Thurman. Products of this brand are represented in the 12 most fashionable showrooms in the world.

THE CHARIOTEER OF MOZIA APPEARING IN LONDON

One of Sicily’s finest archaeological finds and classical statues, The Charioteer of Mozia, is now on display at the British Museum. This is the first outstanding result of a collaborative agreement, facilitated by the Italian Cultural Institute, between the British Museum and the Dipartimento and Assessorato dei Beni Culturali e dell’Identita’ Siciliana, headed by Councillor Sebastiano Missineo.

Mozia was once a city on the island at Sicily’s western tip. On 26th October 1979 a spectacular find was made on the north east of the island, a white marble statue of a young man, almost two metres high. Dating from the fifth century BC, and evidence of a thriving Greek culture in Sicily during this period, the young man in the statue is a winning chariot driver proudly relishing victory. He has now arrived in London to make his British debut.

The Charioteer of Mozia can be seen in the Parthenon Gallery (Room 18) at the British Museum, Great Russell Street, London, from 1st June to the 9th September. It is the star stop on the ‘Winning at the Ancient Games’ free victory trail at the British Museum. MASSIMILIANO FINAZZER FLORY

PRESENTS HEROES AND GAMES To coincide with the international celebration of the Olympics, renowned actor and theatre director Massimiliano Finazzer Flory is presenting a special evening at the Italian Cultural Institute. Flory has achieved a high profile in Italy and across Europe in a wide range of fields: as well as his achievements in theatre and film, he is the author of multiple books on philosophy, has won many prizes, including the Lorenzo Montano National Poetry Prize, and was the Head of Culture for the Municipality of Milan from 2008 to 2011. He now arrives at the Italian Cultural Institute to present an evening based around ideas of winning, losing, and heroes from the Greco-Roman tradition onwards. Accompanied by specially composed music and dance, moments from three incredible works - Iliad, Odyssey

and Aeneid – will be performed alongside a brief tribute to Shakespeare. It promises to be an enlightening and entertaining night.

MACEF 6-9 September 2012, Milan

The next edition of Macef is fast approaching, promising to its international audience an even more exciting and innovative edition. Macef has established itself since 1964 as one of the leading homeware, giftware and accessories shows globally. Both the exhibitors and visitors numbers have steadily increased in the years. Macef has closed its 92nd edition in January with 88,658 professional visitors and 1,887 exhibitors of which 25% foreigners.

Similarly for Macef September, we are organising in collaboration with SBID, the Society of British Interior Design, a UK buyers’ delegation of companies interested in keeping up to date with the latest trends in modern living, but most of all that want to expand their current imported products’ list.

New feature of the show will be AbitaMi lab: true labs, thematic exhibiting areas which will be found in every pavilion and where emerging conceptual and product considerations will be analysed through an adequate expositive language. AbitaMi lab will showcase examples of product innovation, use of materials, manufacturing process, and new sales modes which will make Macef a unique event.

Chamber Trade Fairs

7-9 November 2012 Milan – www.sicurezza.it

The forthcoming edition of Sicurezza - the only international exhibition in the security industry taking place in Italy and one of the top world events dedicated to anti-intrusion, fire prevention, passive defence and home & building automation, intelligence and anti-terrorism, products and services for the Police and Private Security firms - will be held at Fiera Milano (Rho) from 7th to 9th November 2012.

Sicurezza, that aims to be the place where public and private meet, focuses on territorial, urban and physical security, representing a products and services market that is evolving in terms of quality, solutions and new ideas in response to the growing demand for security from today’s society. And through this development, which involves public and private operators, a kind of “modern-day revolution” is quietly unfolding: together with technology, design is very often a key aesthetic-functional dimension of entire product families.

Event leader for over 25 years in the security and anti-terrorism market, Sicurezza confirms its role, due to the “numbers” of the 2010 edition: 373 exhibitors (of whom 123 foreign, from 24 countries) 30.000 square meters, but, above all, 13.665 visitors - 75% from abroad – which had for the three days of exhibition a

busy agenda of business meetings, specialist seminars and communication initiatives and the opportunity to update about a sector that in the last few years has constantly grown in innovation and value.

For 2012, the Italian Chamber of Commerce and Industry for the UK will be involved in the search for exhibitors and qualified visitors from the UK. To exhibit please contact Eva Lamorgese on [email protected]

Cultural Events in ScotlandThe summer in Edinburgh is marked by the festivals season with a growing number of companies and individual artists participating every year. We begin with the Edinburgh International Film Festival (20 June-1 July); the Edinburgh Jazz & Blues Festival (20-29 July); the Edinburgh Fringe Festival (3-27 August); the Edinburgh International Festival (9 August-2 September) and the Edinburgh International Book Festival (11-27 August).

Italy will be prominent at the “Edinburgh Jazz & Blues Festival”, with a group of talented artists of world renown. Danilo Rea and Flavio Boltro – will perform in their UK premiere with melodies from William Tell, The Barber of Seville and Orfeo at Edinburgh Queen’s Hall on the 20th of July.

Several other musicians will perform during the Jazz & Blues Festival, including Dado Moroni and the Enzo Favata Quartet on Sunday 29th July (8:30 pm). Enzo Favata, an exceptional saxophonist who finds inspiration from his traditional Sardinian musical through a great jazz combination of Hebridean and Mediterranean sounds.

As a separate event from the festivals the Italian Cultural Institute has organized a 3-day workshop, the Crieff Music Weekend (3-5 August), under the artistic direction of William Moriconi. Well-known Italian and Scottish musicians will be available for music lessons in various instruments (violin, cello, oboe, bassoon, piano, clarinet and flute) at the Strathearn Community Campus in Crieff.

In August the Italian Institute will be, for the first time, a venue for the “Edinburgh Fringe Festival”. The aim is to be a hub for the Italian companies at the Fringe: the Forres based Charioteer Theatre with their Commedia dell’Arte Comes to Edinburgh in a masks exhibition and masked performances – a project aided by Piccolo Teatro di Milano. The masks are originals made by the Venetian Renzo Antonello – one of the few remaining craftsmen to keep this traditional art alive; the comedian Tom Corradini with the tragic-comic show Superheroes and the Francesca Selva Dance Company – winner of the Florence for Fringe competition - will bring Marcello Valassina’s Sulle Labbra tue dolcissime/On Your Honeyed Lips.

At the Italian Cultural Institute, Edinburgh:

- Commedia dell’Arte Comes to Edinburgh: exhibition (6-11 August); videos, photographs and live comedians (13-25 August).

- Superheroes on Friday 10th August at 4:00 pm

- Sulle labbra tue dolcissime theatre and dance on Tuesday, 7th August at 12 noon.

The dance showcase will continue at Dance Base, the national centre for dance in Edinburgh, with five dance companies from Italy who will take part in the Fringe Festival. It is a great event in collaboration with the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage & Activities and other Italian Institutions. The performers are:

- Compagnia Chiara Frigo in Suite-Hope (3-12 August)

- Silvia Gribaudi in A Corpo Libero & The Woman Who Wanted to be Funny (3-12 August)

- Paola Bianchi in Duplica (3-12 August)

- Alessandro Sciarroni in Joseph (7-12 August)

- Sanpapié in I am Son (16-25 August)

The Italian Institute will also be present within the famous “Edinburgh International Festival” supporting the European Union Youth Orchestra conducted by Maestro Gianandrea Noseda: the program includes music by Richard Causton, Claude Debussy and Ferruccio Busoni’s piano concerto accompanied by the Edinburgh Festival Chorus. This will be a fantastic opportunity to enjoy young players performing challenging pieces.Edinburgh Fringe Festival

IL SENSO DELLA BIRRA VIAREGGIO 5th-6th MAYThe first weekend of May embraced the fourth edition of Il Senso della Birra, the celebration of Italian microbreweries organised by Artigiani della Birra (www.artigianidellabirra.it) in collaboration with Cooperativa Linketto and the Comune of Viareggio. The event, which was held at the Centro Congressi Principe di Piemonte over Saturday and Sunday, involved guided

tastings and the sale of homemade beers with the aim at discovering a new taste, raising the awareness of drinking healthily and profiles of artisan beers. Besides all the breweries coming from all over Italy, this year the highlight was a Scottish beer, the Clan Italia Antonine Amber Ale brought by our member Mr Michael Lemetti (www.antonineamberale.com). This beer is produced by the Falkirk Tryst Brewery, which provided many other ales for this occasion for the joy of all the attendees. The event was very successful and the Chamber would like to wish the same for any future editions. For more information, please contact the Glasgow office.

GARDENING SCOTLAND 2012 ROYAL HIGHLAND CENTRE, EDINBURGH 1st-3rd JUNESummer in Scotland started with Gardening Scotland and the joy only beautiful flowers and plants can bring. The Royal Highland Centre hosted the 12th edition of this major Show, the largest of its sector in Scotland, which, among workshops and competitions, features a craft marquee, a botanical art exhibition, a cooking theatre and, of course, a food fayre. Here the foreign Pavilions are the main attractions and this year we definitely stood out from the crowd. After the successful experience of the 2011 edition, Azienda Agricola Bonazzi (www.bonazzivalpolicellawine.it) and Tili Vini (www.tilivini.com) were back supplying the finest wines from the north-east and the heart of Italy, as well as Fattorie Umbre (www.fattorieumbre.com) whose delicious pasta sauces, extra virgin olive oil and pickles were sold out. Comune di Lucca welcomed the eager audience to go there and visit the sights of the Tuscan city, while Eugea (www.eugea.it) raised the awareness on biodiversity among the gardening loving visitors with cheerful and easy ideas anybody can take home. This edition also embraced the gorgeous 100% made in Italy items of Annalisa Miniutti (www.annalisaminiutti.com) which the female audience greatly appreciated. We would like to thank our proud exhibitors for all their helpfulness and wish to welcome them again next year. Further information about the 2013 show is available by contacting the Glasgow office.

BBC GOOD FOOD SHOW SCOTLAND 2012 SECC, GLASGOW19th-21st October 2012Over the last few years the BBC Good Food Show has proved to be the only place in Scotland to attract the biggest food and drink loving audience. Next October the best regional and national producers will be back at the Show for its 6th edition, and the Chamber is looking for Italian companies willing to join this event after the successful experiences of the past two years.

With a marketing campaign including highlights by the most renowned British chefs, this fair is open to every foodie in town. The average age of the visitors is 46 years old, 80% female and 20% male with an average household income of £52k, that is to say the best target audience when offering food and drink products. At the Show, companies are indeed invited to sample their products and retail directly to customers.

We are happy to work again on this event as we believe it is a true investment for any Italian companies wishing to enter the Scottish market and start influencing its habits by creating new business relationships and meeting new customers face to face. We can say it is worth exhibiting for Italian companies not only by experience but also according to the surveys carried out in the previous editions, which state that 86% of the visitors buy things they would not normally see; 80% taste and buy different foods and 49% try different drinks. Any foreign presence is always a source of interest and the Italian knowledge and expertise in providing good food and wine does not need to be introduced here.

The Chamber is therefore looking for Italian companies or local companies selling true Italian produce which want to exhibit at the Show having the opportunity to book their stands at advantageous prices and with our complete assistance throughout the event. To find out more, please visit our website or make contact with the Glasgow office via email at [email protected] or tel. +44 (0) 141 221 7296.
