Step 1. Learn about skills, knowledge and experience that you need

Knowledge

If you are applying to be registered in the class of Commercial Builder (limited to waterproofing work) and you have successfully completed the following qualification:

· Certificate III in Construction Waterproofing (CPC31411), then you will satisfy the technical knowledge requirements for registration.

This qualification does not include units of competency relating to applying for a building permit, nor to management of occupational health and safety, contracts or project budgets.

Other relevant units of competency include the following:

· Arrange building applications and approvals (CPCCBC4026A)

· Identify construction work hazards and select risk control strategies (CPCCWHS3001)

· Produce labour and material schedules for ordering (CPCCBC4005A)

· Read and interpret plans and specifications (CPCCBC4012B)

· Select and prepare a construction contract (CPCCBC4003A).

Experience

To assist in our assessment of whether you have the required experience for registration in this class of building practitioner, you must provide a portfolio of evidence (tables 1 and 2) that demonstrates your experience.

This portfolio should demonstrate your capacity to undertake all the activities associated with the class of Commercial Builder (Limited) – Limited to waterproofing and damp proofing work – in a competent manner and to a professional standard.

Your portfolio should include evidence of:

· your experience in the areas that you tick in table 1

· details for three different commercial construction projects that together demonstrate your involvement in all stages of waterproofing and damp proofing work, from project start to completion (table 2).

At least one project must include waterproofing or damp proofing for a basement.

At least one project must involve waterproofing for a balcony.

Finally, table 3 provides examples of the types of documentary evidence of your experience that you could provide.

STEP 3. Use table 3 to create your evidence portfolio.

Table 3. Create a table that summarises all your commercial building experience relating to waterproofing and damp proofing work.

Evidence of a project program that you developed or contributed to, such as:

• Gantt or similar progressive charts

• critical path events

• trade sequencing

• commencement and completion dates

Enter in to and administer contracts for the building work

• documentation demonstrating your capacity to enter into and administer commercial building contracts

• examples of documented processes that you implemented relating to the management and resolution of disputes

• examples of methods for managing variations in contracts that you administered

• labour hire agreements that you entered into or contributed to for the carrying out of commercial building work

• examples of progress claims submitted showing progressive claims for payments as sections of the work are completed, including individual trade progress breakdowns

Establish, monitor and manage financial plans and budgets for the project

• cash flow statements for each project or a component of each project

• a profit and loss statement for each project or a component of each project

• project financial monitoring documentation

• examples of project insurances you administered

Develop, monitor and manage occupational health and safety for construction sites and surrounds

Evidence should include:

• three examples of Safe Work Method statements (SWMSs) for each construction site

• job safety analyses for at least three different work tasks

• documentation related to site inductions, including induction program, checklists and records management for each construction site

• completion of relevant OH&S certificates.

Select and manage subcontractors and licensed trades

Evidence should include:

• procedures for the recruitment of staff and contractors at required stages of each project

• contract documents or agreements used to engage staff or subcontractors

• procedures for ensuring staff and contracts hold appropriate licences/tickets, accreditation and training

• evidence that onsite training and induction was provided to staff and recorded.

Plan, coordinate, and manage building work in line with architectural, designer and engineering specifications

Develop, manage, project schedules for the work

• drawings and specifications for each project

• documentation demonstrating application of NCC requirements, Australian Standards, and state or local statutory requirements, including the use and application of compliant building materials appropriate to the building class and type of construction

• copies of quality assurance documents and processes to ensure compliance of work and a defect-free building before handover (for example, trade compliance certificates)

• copies of handover documentation

• copies of relevant building surveyor’s inspections reports certifying works undertaken

• copies of building notices for which you were responsible for arranging work to meet a compliance requirement
