Year 1 Final Project (2012 - 2013) THE PUBLIC KNITTING HOUSE
A closed-down local pub in Chesterton, Cambridge is converted into a local knitting centre with a full production line of yarn. The project aims to create a new heart for the local community of Chesterton, which currently lacks a ‘high street’ and a community centre. The knitting centre would also be a home to several nomadic knitting clubs in Cambridge.

Revenue
On the site, local residents could grow vegetables which will be used for making dye. Leftover produce can be taken home or used in the cafe kitchen.
The vegetable dye is used to dye yarn produced from sheep, which are kept on site and are allowed to grazed on the Stourhead Common op-posite the site.
Dyed yarn is then air-dried and spun within the building.
Dyed yarn is sold as a knitting product for purchase by the local clubs
Knitted products can be sold in the shop and exhibitied in the cafe area.
The building is maintained by income from the cafe and the knitting shop.

Development Stages
1. A New Shortcut 2. Receding 3. Adding light towers 4. Creating an outdoor area 5. Creating an interior street
A space for market stalls is provided by the square, which is enclosed by the market spine containing artists’ studios on the upper floor.
The roof shape of the main building blends in with the terraced roofscape of the area and the towers make the project visible from Ridley Road Market.
