Parsons Challenge 1:As human beings we do many things unconsciously, which then become a regular practice for us. Small things are taken for granted and other than a subconscious acknowledgment of their existence/presence these things are overlooked. I realized that everyday when I leave home for school or otherwise I carry a bag. Most often than not it has a few things in it like a wallet, books, my ipod and my cell phone. However, carrying a bag became somewhat of a habit for me, after a point of time I realized that I had started carrying a bag even when it was unnecessary (it was almost empty once or twice). I realized that my bags had become of a part of me. It had become an extension of who I am! So I wanted this piece to be a simple study of my bags. I’ve picked a few and done quick sketches in charcoal.

Parsons Challenge 2:It has been said that you are what you wear. This piece is a reflection on that thought because I strongly believe that a person’s attire can give an insight into their character. For many the bag holds an integral position in their lives. A bag is meant to store and safeguard ones valuables. In the drawing I have tried to show the importance of the bag in my life by showing various items. The bag, in this drawing represents me. The cloud above the bag shows my thoughts and ideas that are constantly flowing in and out from the moment I am awake. Thoughts are often diverse and sometimes they may seem random thus the drawings of the balloons, roses, butterfly and the headphones. The basic concept behind this piece is to show how after a point we are often identified by what we wear. I have used pen and ink to compose this drawing to contrast the sharpness of the pen with the soft background.

Parsons Challenge 3:In this drawing I have shown an everyday suburban commuter, she could be me or anyone. The thought behind this work was to show a certain dependence on the bag. As if accompanied by a possession that will keep you occupied for a long journey with its contents. This piece was inspired when I was commuting by the local subway one night and I disembarked on a platform that I had never been on. Instinctively I clutched my bag as I tried to fathom where I was and the bag gave me a sense of comfort. Finally after walking around the station for sometime I managed to find the exit, and it struck me that the things we take for granted are often what lends us support and comfort when we most need it. I have used watercolors to show the fluidity of emotions that went through my mind when I was momentarily lost and then found my bearings.
