PARROT PRESS Metro Parrot Head Newsletter June 2010 NY, NJ, CT Vol. 18 No. 6 TALES FROM MY BANK OF BAD HABITS Well, I’m in full summer mode, how about you? The boat is in the water, the pool has just been opened and we are in the final planning stages for the 8 th annual Metro and Morris at the Acoustic Café and Captain’s Cove Seaport in Bridgeport, Connecticut. Don’t forget to let Joe Lombardi ( [email protected] ) know if you are planning on taking the ferry over to Bridgeport on Saturday. The plan is for the noon boat out of Port Jefferson arriving just after 1PM when the Connecticut Metros will wisk you away to the show which starts at 2PM. The silent auction should be as great as ever and we will have a raffle of two dozen event t-shirts with triple CD disk sets of last year’s show. Don’t forget, Coral Reefer Doyle Grisham is sitting in with Jim Morris’ band this year, the first time they have all played together. So, please support this great club event and head on over. Check out www.metromorris.com for all the details. Don’t forget, we have the family picnic on Saturday July 24 th and a booze cruise on July 31 st , followed by Jimmy Buffett at Jones Beach on August 31 st , details will follow. I have just one last item to cover. Kerry-Anne Willett, our newsletter editor, has been working hard and putting out a great newsletter since 2007. But just like all of us, things change, and her growing family commitments will have to take priority over the newsletter, and she has asked us to find a replacement. Since we have finally moved on to sending the newsletter on line, only mailing a few to members who have requested hard copies, any member can take on this task without having to turn their kitchen a distribution center every month. The job of editor can also be shared by one or more club members. The newsletter will continue to be the most important part of our club media, and we need to fill this void as soon as possible. So, show some club spirit and take a shot at it. Email me at [email protected] if you are interested. See you in Bridgeport ! Dave Pohorylo

It’s almost time for the 17th Annual Family Picnic

When: Saturday, July 24th

Where: Fresh Pond Park, Amagansett, NY What Time: 11 AM - Dusk (or whenever the mosquitoes arrive)

waters of Gardiner’s Bay, will provide the scenic backdrop for the METRO Parrot Head Club’s Annu y Picnic. All Club members, their families and friends are invited to attend. In years past, we’ve had e ranging in age from 6 months to 78 years. Fresh Pond Park offers something for everyone, the ba s are calm and the waves are gentle for the younger children. Older kids will enjoy tubing either up the creek (depending on the tides). There’s plenty of room on the beach for sunbathers and plenty in the picnic area to give folk’s a break from those UV rays. The volleyball net will be set up for tho

ish to play. Although from photos of past picnics, it seems that many of us prefer to stand or sit in ater and relax and chat.

he past, the Club will provide, burgers, hot dogs, corn-on-the-cob and soft drinks. We’re asking

Please contact Lon at 631-399-5540, to RSVP and to let him know what you pla At this point we’d like to emphasize the importance for members to RSVP. It will be a great help in ng of the picnic.

Dear METRO Parrot Head Club,

On behalf of the Department of Transportation, I would like to thank all of the “Parrot Heads” for your continued effort to keep State Route 114 clean. Every time I receive your signature sheets it makes me wish we had more dedicated groups and individuals like yourselves to keep Long Island Clean. Thank you again for your continued efforts! Sincerely, Mark Hervan Assistant Resident Engineer, Riverhead NYSDOT

On April 24, thirty-two club members participated in our annual Spring Road Clean-up and helped to kick off our 18 year of road clean-ups. Special thanks go out to those club members who came out that day and to all the club members who have ever grabbed a pointy stick and orange bag and pitched in to help over the years. It’s nice to know that our efforts continue to be recognized.

THEY ASKED US BACK! For those of you who may not know, Soldier Ride is a fundraiser for the

Wounded Warrior Project. Participants get to bike the course along with wounded veteran's from the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars. The cause is a favorite of Jimmy Buffett's and he's supports the effort both up here and down in Key West

Once again, we'll be setting up near Cyril's on the Napeague stretch.

Just a short walk across Montauk Highway for the bar known for some of the best frozen drinks in The Hamptons. A community service event at a bar, it's what Parrot Heads do best.

All kidding aside, we can certainly sacrifice a few hour of picnic time in order to help those men and women who sacrificed a great deal more.

Anyone interested in participating in the Soldier Ride Event

can mail Joe Lombardi at [email protected]

19th Annual Meeting of the Minds 2010

"Gypsies In The Palace"

November 4 - November 7, 2010

(Key West, Florida)

ILO @ TALKHOUSE With little fanfare, Ilo Ferreira has been added to the Talkhouse schedule on Thursday, July 22 in what's becoming the annual Pop-Parrotzi Birthday celebration.

Tickets cost $35...there's no VIP section, so we'll be able to get up close to the stage.

Those of you lucky enough to see Ilo last Summer were treated to a special appearance by Jimmy Buffett. It’s doubtful that he’ll show up again, trying to predict what Jimmy might do is about as easy and nailing jello to a brick wall.

If you are considering coming out for the Family Picnic on July 24, I've been told that Ilo will be performing at the "Rock the Farm" benefit concert that night. Just like last year! That concert, (and the cost of tickets) has not yet been announced. You heard it here first campers.

And to give you a little background on how Ilo came to be……

Intelligencer From Africa to Margaritaville

Introducing Ilo.

• By Matt McCue • Published Nov 27, 2009

Tom Freston, the 64-year-old MTV co-founder and former Viacom honcho, has among his hobbies these days the career development of a 30-year-old African singer named Ilo Ferreira, who goes by Ilo. On November 23, Freston and his friend Jimmy Buffett, 62, were there to support Ilo at his sold-out show at Joe’s Pub and his appearance later that night on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon, which they’d helped engineer.

Hopefully, lightning strikes and he gets a musical career, says Freston. We’re just trying to give him some exposure.

How’d they get to know, and fund, him? It was an amazing set of circumstances, Buffett says backstage at Joe’s. Freston gets fired and he doesn’t have his plane and he’s got me all fired up to go to the Festival in the Desert,in Africa. So they have to take Buffett’s jet. The route to Mali is from San Juan to Cape Verde, where they stopped to refuel. Buffett thought, why not check out the local music scene while they were stopping through. I went, Let’s see if Cesaria Evora is playing; I’ve always been a fan.’

Also with them was MTV Networks editorial director Bill Flanagan, 54. That night, the Cape Verde culture ministry hosted for Buffett and his traveling companions to showcase performances by the best local musicians, including Ilo. After seeing him play, they all just looked at each other and said, Man.’ I mean, you see a lot of people, but very few people you think have it, says Buffett. The next day, they invited Ilo to lunch at Sodade, an empty upstairs restaurant, along with their traveling companion Chris Blackwell, 72, the man who discovered Bob Marley and today owns a production company, who’d skipped the dinner. I said to him,You need to go see this kid and tell us,’  says Freston. (Though when they approached Ilo, he’d never heard of any of themeven Buffett though he’d heard of MTV: That got him excited.)

When listening to music in a bar at midnight, you can think that something is the greatest thing

in the world. Then, in the cold light of day, it isn’t, says Flanagan. Before we start flipping out over this guy, let’s invite him to bring his guitar and play us some songs at noon in the sunlight and see if he is as good as we thought. Following lunch, he started playing, and Chris says, He’s really got it.’

Afterward, Buffett suggested they give him a chance to record an album in America. (Because of his MTV job, Flanagan recused himself from further involvement.) Eight months later, in September 2007, Buffett flew Ilo to Massachusetts to play with him and the Coral Reefer Band, in front of 60,000 people at Gillette Stadium. He’s been sitting in with the group ever since. Blackwell, also a financial supporter of Ilo’s development, said take him on tour, feature him while he works on his career, says Buffett. I’ve seen him at club level. I’ve seen him with an acoustic guitar. Chicks love him.

Ilo, whose sound is an upbeat mix of influences from Paul Simon to Elvis, with some African rhythms thrown in, will soon leave Buffett’s tour to play his own dates. Jimmy is a shortcut I didn’t see coming, Ilo says, happily. On Fallon, he sang Let Me Love You, which he’d played for his visitors in Cape Verde. But I had it in my mind where I wanted to go. The way I write my songs, I was thinking about the world, not locally. I was making my plans to get there, but Jimmy just made things happen he snaps his fingers from day to night.

The Metro Parrot head Club has formed a volleyball team playing at Robert Moses on Thursday nights.

It's a recreational league so it's not really competitive and nobody has to be good.

Anyone interested, should email Bosco [email protected]

Thanks and Fins Up! Bosco

Vero Beach boatbuilder, Jimmy Buffett team up to help recover oiled wildlife in Gulf By Ed Killer

Friday, May 28, 2010

VERO BEACH — The images of the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico are serving as a call to action for men and women who have built their lives on the water like Vero Beach boatbuilders Mark Castlow and Jimbo Meador, and Meador’s longtime friend, musician Jimmy Buffett.

Days after people began to learn about the magnitude of the Deepwater Horizon catastrophe, Castlow e-mailed Meador and Buffett who were in the Bahamas fishing for bonefish. Castlow’s message was simple: “We have to do something.”

Early next week, Dragonfly Boatworks, a small custom boatbuilding company, expects to ship a vessel designed specifically to aid in the recovery of oil-covered wildlife along the marshes of the Gulf Coast.

Named “S.W.A.T.” for Shallow Water Attention Terminal, the Dragonfly crew took the 17-foot skiff from Castlow’s original sketches to the finished product in just 28 days.

The boat is one of four Dragonfly will build and send to university researchers in the Gulf, Meador said.

“We’re trying to get a boat out there as quickly as possible,” said Meador, a lifelong waterman born and raised on Alabama’s Gulf coast. “We’re building it for them to use on oiled birds and wildlife, but we hope they don’t need it.”

The first SWAT is headed to the Gulf Coast Research Laboratory operated by the University of Southern Mississippi. The scientists there were chosen to receive the first one in part because it is Buffett’s alma mater.

The singer, songwriter, restaurateur and author is underwriting the construction costs of the four boats estimated at about $35,000 apiece. Dragonfly Boatworks also is donating much of the expense, and the company is in the process of trying to partner with an outboard engine manufacturer to help with the cause.

Page 11: PARROT PRESS - · PDF filePARROT PRESS . Metro Parrot Head Newsletter June 2010 : NY, NJ, CT ... Joe Bongiorno . 17 : Margaritaville . Rita Beirlein : 25

“Instead of pointing fingers, we wanted to lend a hand,” Meador said. “Everything is interconnected. People depend upon one another. We saw it with the economy, and now we’re seeing it with the ocean.”

All three spend much of their time and earning much of their livelihoods in or on the water, Meador said. Castlow has been in the boating and fishing industry his entire life. Meador fished commercially, ran processing plants, sold kayaks, boat and fly fishing gear. Buffett fishes, surfs and sails and has become famous for singing and writing about his love of the water.

They are concerned about the long-term effects the oil spill will have on the Gulf region and parts of the Atlantic Ocean, which are all connected by currents and winds. Meador said recovery efforts will be able to estimate the damage done to “visible” marine life, but the “invisible” marine life affected such as the eggs of tuna, wahoo, billfish, dolphin and mackerel will also be an issue felt by future generations.

That concern and understanding led to the design of the SWAT craft.

Taking feedback and suggestions from Buffett as well as from scientists involved in the recovery effort, Castlow and Meador incorporated many unique features to help on the water. The boat is expected to have a draft of 8 to 12 inches when loaded. A worktable sits in the middle of the deck and is coated with a sanitary gel coat and coarse surface to help keep oil-covered birds from slipping on the surface and adding to their stress.

The seafoam green foam-core boat will have a bow-mounted 12-volt electric trolling motor and will be powered by a tiller-steered outboard. A folding collapsible canopy that shades the entire boat will include solar fans and a misting system to help keep researchers and wildlife cool during the sweltering Gulf Coast summer to come.

The canopy is being built by T-N-T Boatworks and the canvas by So Rite. Both companies are based in Fort Pierce.

“This whole disaster really got our ire up,” Castlow said of Buffett, Meador and himself. “We’ve made our livings from the ocean our whole lives. We’re just trying to get a tool into the hands of the people who have dedicated their lives to working with marine life.”

Also known as Shallow Water Attention Terminal boat Built by: Dragonfly Boatworks in Vero Beach Length: 17 feet Beam: 88 inches Draft: 8 to 12 inches loaded Power: Tiller-steered outboard up to 40 horsepower Construction: Foam-filled fiberglass Canopy: Fully-covering, misting system, solar fans and retractable to a height below the top of the outboard, built by T-N-T in Fort Pierce Worktable: Covered with nonskid, sanitary surface Payload: Estimated to carry approximately 20-30 birds or small wildlife More about Dragonfly Boatworks at www.dragonflyboatworksllc.com
