Camp Information Open HouseDo you have questions about camp? Come to the Discover West Ridge Center Open House on Saturday, November 13, 2010 from 11:00-2:00pm and visit our Camp 2011 table. Questions about registering online, partial (scheduled) payments, specifics about each camp and more will be answered.
Age RequirementsWhen choosing an age-appropriate camp for your child, use the grade that your child will be entering in fall 2011. All campers in preschool programs must be of age by the first day of camp. Proof of age may be required; see individual camp listings.
Staff SupervisionEach camp is supervised daily by a qualified adult director. Some camps, depending on size, also have an assistant director. Each camp’s high school- or college-age counselors are chosen carefully by the Park District for their demonstration of maturity and enthusiasm. All camp staff members complete an extensive training program, which includes supervision and safety techniques, activity development and first aid.
Parent ManualsParent manuals for camps beginning June 20 are mailed the week of June 6. These booklets contain all of the information you’ll need to know about camp, including lunch, field trips, swimming activities, camp clothes, hours, busing schedules and more. This manual also includes an emergency form.
Health and SafetyEmergency FormThe Park District does not require children to have a medical examination to attend camp. However, it is important to accurately complete the emergency form that is included in your parent manual. If your child has special needs such as allergies, phobias or medical alerts such as epilepsy or asthma, please include this information with home and work phone numbers on the form we provide. These forms must be returned to your camper’s director on the first day of camp.
Camp NurseThe camp nurse is accessible to staff during camp hours by cell phone and reviews all emergency forms, medical forms and accident reports, assists in medical distribution, checks first aid supplies and assists in other areas.
Special Accommodations ADA InformationThe Park District of Highland Park encourages participation by everyone! If you or a family member have special needs and would like to participate in a program, we will be happy to make reasonable modification(s) to meet your needs. We are pleased to offer door-to-door bus service for our Highland Park residents, which reflects our continued commitment to providing convenience for you and the highest quality camp experience for your children. This service is available to Park District taxpayers only (please see residency requirements on page 19 for more information).
Registering for Bus ServiceBus service is provided as a "complete package" only — riders must use the service both in the morning and in the afternoon (no morning-only or afternoon-only riders). Busing is not available to children enrolled in any section of Before Camp and After Camp.
To receive bus service, simply register for the bus transportation option under each camp’s registration section. If you do not register for bus transportation, you may request bus service no later than 5:00pm, April 1 by contacting the supervisor of each camp. If you make a request for bus service after this date and before 5:00pm, April 29, an additional $75 charge per session will be assessed. No requests for bus service are accepted after 5:00pm, April 29. If you are signing up for the second session, July 18-August 5, the deadline will be June 3 for bus service.

Pick-Up/Drop-off LocationsCampers are picked up at their homes except for those who live on roads inaccessible by the school bus. These campers must continue to walk to the nearest bus accessible intersection. As this year’s door-to-door service is expected to provide daily transportation for over 400 children, routes may average 45 minutes based on shared routes with multiple drop-off locations. If you would like your child to be picked up or dropped off at a location different from your home address (e.g. a babysitter’s house) please put your request in writing in a separate envelope by 5:00pm, April 1. Send your request to the Park District of Highland Park, Attn: Bus Coordinator, 636 Ridge Road, Highland Park, IL 60035. After this date there will be a $75 fee assessed for any route changes. If you move after you register, written notice to the bus coordinator must be received prior to 5:00pm, April 1 to avoid the $75 service fee.
SafetyA bus counselor supervises each bus throughout the entire route to ensure safety and provide assistance. Buses are designated as Park District camp buses. As always, it is your responsibility as parents to ensure your child’s safety when walking to and from the bus. Please make arrangements in the morning and afternoon to meet and supervise your children at the stop. Due to the large number of campers using our bus service, special colored backpacks are issued the first day of camp to identify them as Park District bus riders. Only children enrolled in Park District camps who have also registered for bus service may ride the bus.
Camp Bus RoutesDue to the revised locations of several of our camp programs for 2011, "route sharing" has been changed — some of the Park District camps that shared busing routes last year have been changed. Note that certain bus routes require a specific number of campers to sign up in order for bus service to be available. Please carefully read all of the following information.
Junior Crew and Senior CrewCampers are picked up at their homes and dropped off at Sunset Woods Park.
S.W.E.A.T. Shop Junior and SeniorCampers are picked up at their homes and dropped off at West Ridge Center.
Camp Big Top/Little Top and Tennis Plus Camp Campers are picked up at their homes and dropped off at Larry Fink Memorial Park or at Deer Creek Courts.

8 Park District of Highland Park
If you’re a working parent or even if your child just wants a little more camp time, we’ve got the perfect extended-day solution for you! Send your children to a Park District camp and then enroll them in our Before Camp and After Camp to complete their day.
Before Camp and After Camp allow children to gear up for the day or wind down in a safe, low-key environment. Supervised fun ranges from free indoor and outdoor playtime to organized activities such as crafts, movies and board games. Snacks and drinks are provided. This smaller, mixed-age group allows for individualized attention and interaction with children of many ages in a respectful, noncom-petitive environment.
The camp is open to all children in grades 1–5 who are also enrolled in a simultaneous Park District camp that runs 9:00am-2:45/3:00pm. You may choose to enroll in morning care, afternoon care or both. You must provide your own transporta-tion to and from Before and After Camps (children will be bused to/from West Ridge Center to/from their main camp). When registering for your child’s main camp, you must register without bus transportation.

Camp Sunshine & More SunshineAges 3–5
Our 7-week Camp Sunshine is the perfect “first camp” opportunity for your preschoolers ages 3–5. And our 1-week mini camp in August, called More Sunshine, is the per-fect end-of-summer experience for preschoolers ages 4–5.
Camp Sunshine introduces youngsters to the fun of summer through arts and crafts, show and tell, indoor and outdoor playtime, songs, games, group activities and fun special events (like going to Hidden Creek AquaPark, Rosewood Beach and various parks throughout Highland Park!).
For Camp Sunshine, campers register in one of three sections by age — separate camps are held for 3-, 4- and 5-year-olds. Each section of approximately 18 children is staffed by an adult site director with early childhood education training and college-age or high school-age counselors, for a 7:1 camper/staff ratio. At the 1-week More Sunshine, 3- and 4-year-olds and 4- and 5-year-olds will be grouped together in one session.
Our staff is highly attuned to the insecurities of young children who may be going to camp for the first time. Throughout each day, emphasis is placed on learning social skills such as sharing, taking turns, following directions and learning independence.
5-year-olds attending five days a week at West Ridge Center and Ravinia School will participate in introductory swim lessons at the Recreation Center of Highland Park.
Parents are invited to Parents Night on Monday, June 6, 2011 at 7:00pm at West Ridge Center to learn more about the camp and meet the site directors and other parents. Parents are also encouraged to come to camp on the first day and participate with their children from 9:00 -9:30am. This “transition time” helps younger chil-dren become acclimated to camp. By the end of the summer, your camper will be full of stories and sunshine!
Bus transportation is not provided for Camp Sunshine or More Sunshine. Carpool arrange-ments are the responsibility of individual families. Campers must bring a sack lunch and beverage with them to camp every day (additional snacks are provided by parents). Campers will receive a camp T-shirt on the first day of camp. Campers are encouraged to be potty-trained by the first day of camp.

Welcome to Junior Crew and Senior Crew! These camps are two of our most popular Park District camps. If you’re looking for a true day camp experience with all of the best parts of summer packed into every hour, Junior Crew and Senior Crew are for you! These delightfully diverse camps give campers the opportunity to participate in a wide range of outdoor activities throughout the entire summer, including arts and crafts, sports, games, music, dance, swimming, field trips and much more! Camp meets rain or shine, and each week we invite special guests to come to camp to lead us in an activity, such as science projects, cooking, theater or martial arts. During the week we will also have recreational swimming at Hidden Creek AquaPark.
In Junior Crew, your child will enjoy instructional intro-to-swim lessons at the indoor pool at the Recreation Center of Highland Park! We highly recommend you supplement the introductory lessons offered in this camp with a swim lesson/class offered through the Recreation Center. Call 847.579.4051 for details.

Our caring and compassionate staff consists of teachers and college and high school students who have participated in Park District programs for many years. They act as role models, creating a "neighborhood" environment that gives campers an opportunity to interact with a variety of chil-dren from all over the Highland Park area. Many of our campers form cherished friendships that last a lifetime!

S.W.E.A.T. Shop will have an overall theme that empowers the minds of campers to create a posi-tive and healthy environment.
Professional artists instruct campers in each art form, while counselors supervise free play time and organized games. In addition, this camp’s special "PAL" program (Providing Arts Leadership) matches older children with younger, creating special bonds and providing role models.
The final performances/showings are held at West Ridge Center. Family and friends are invited to attend. The Junior performance is August 4 and the Senior performance is August 5. In order to fulfill final performance qualifications, we recommend campers attend all days and all weeks of this special camp unless there is an emergency. Campers must bring a sack lunch and beverage to camp every day. Campers will receive a backpack and camp T-shirt on the first day of camp. Friendship requests will be honored and must be turned in by May 20. See pages 7, 19 and insert for details.
Due to the unique nature and structure of this camp, please note that groups will not be changed after the first day of camp.
There will be a 4-week option again this year. At the end of the 4-week session there will be a showcase to display the work your budding artist has created. Join us this summer for S.W.E.A.T. Shop — you’ll develop a lifetime’s worth of creative interests!
Supervisor: Megan Lebak, 847.579.3120, [email protected]
If you think S.W.E.A.T. Shop means racing around on the soccer field, think again! Our premier camp for budding artists and young creatives, Summer Workshops in Exploring Arts and Theater (S.W.E.A.T.) has been one of the most successful Park District camps for more than 20 years. This camp gives participants the extraordinary opportunity to dabble in all aspects of the arts —dance, drama, music, theater, visual arts and ceramics (Senior only), while building self-confidence and self-esteem. Campers enjoy summer fun, including weekly trips to Hidden Creek AquaPark, while also tapping into their imaginations and creative passions. The campsite features a ceramics studio (Senior only), art and dance studios, a gymnasium and outside play areas. This camp emphasizes learning fine and large motor skills, as well as self-exploration of feelings through the arts and journaling. The camp culminates at the end of the summer with a final performance or showing of the campers’ work.
In S.W.E.A.T. Shop Junior, campers will enjoy instructional intro-to-swim lessons at the indoor pool at the Recreation Center of Highland Park! We recommend you supplement this camp’s introductory lessons with a swim lesson/class offered through the Recreation Center. Call 847.579.4051 for details.

The full, performance-oriented camp is offered for seven weeks. The final performance is held during the last week of camp, on Tuesday, August 2 at 5:30pm (rain dates are August 3 and August 4). Families and friends are invited to the final perfor-mance as well as to the dress rehearsal on August 2. Because this camp culminates in a final produc-tion that is very team-oriented, attendance for the full seven weeks is mandatory to participate in the final performance.
A 4-week option is also available for Camp Big Top/Little Top. 4-week campers do not perform in the final performance but have the opportu-nity to march in the Highland Park Fourth of July parade. The final day of the 4-week camp is July 15, which is Parents Day for the entire camp. Join us on this day to watch your campers perform the skills they’ve learned on the different apparatus and earn their red noses!
Campers must bring a sack lunch and beverage to camp every day. Campers will receive a backpack and camp T-shirt on the first day of camp. If you’re looking for a fantastic summer filled with wonder-fully unique opportunities, Camp Big Top/Little Top is for you!
Please note: There will be a possibility of animals at this camp site. If your child is allergic to animals please notify the supervisor, Julie Naatz, prior to registering for this camp.

The show unfolds before your eyes… It’s bound to dazzle and surprise…Your heart beats to the rhythm of the band…as the ring-master announces the greatest show in Highland Park!
What could be more fun than running off to join the (Park District) circus? This one of a kind pro-gram in Highland Park has gained a reputation as one of the best camps around! During Camp Big Top/Little Top, campers will have the opportunity to learn a wide variety of circus skills in a safe and fun environment, including tightwire walking, juggling, clowning, acrobatics, lyra, unicycle, globe balls and circus art painting. This camp even has its own circus band. Camp culminates with a spectacular show full of fabulous new wonders that will put circus magic in your heart. Camp Big Top/Little Top is led by circus specialists.
Campers discover the fascinating world of circus and performance through rotations at various circus stations. They also spend time each week at Hidden Creek AquaPark or Rosewood Beach. Campers will build self-esteem and confidence as they learn the importance of focus and breaking down skills into learnable elements. Through the unique opportunities that working on a final circus performance provides, campers will learn critical socialization skills such as teamwork, peer encouragement, trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, caring and good citizenship.

A special partial scheduled payment form must accompany your 2011 registration form or you must click the ‘schedule’ button online while registering and complete the partial scheduled payment registration.
Due to the large number of families using partial scheduled payments and the financial tracking involved, exceptions cannot be made to the following procedures and guidelines.
1. All camps must be paid in full by April 15.
2. Partial scheduled payments may only be done with the partial scheduled payment form at the time of registration or online with the ‘sched-uled’ option/button.
3. All registrations received after 5:00pm, March 25 must be paid in full at the time of registration.
4. Camp payments paid in full at the time of reg-istration can not be changed to a partial sched-uled payment plan.

registration (must be made by cash, check or credit card). Your first-half payment is processed immediately.
3. You must also make your second payment at the time of registration utilizing the enclosed partial scheduled payment form in this camp brochure. If you are paying by check, your second-half payment check must be postdated April 15, 2011, and it will not be cashed until this date. If you are paying by credit card the second half of the payment will be charged on April 15, 2011.
4. Your second payment must be attached for your registration to be processed. No exceptions!
5. There is a $20 charge for a non-sufficient fund check (NSF) or rejected/incorrect charge payment. The Park District reserves the right to withdraw a registrant for non-payment of camp in full.

To use the partial scheduled payment plan for online registration (residents only)1. Choose your camp and the family member in
which you wish to register. You may do this for all of the members you wish to register before proceeding to ‘checkout’ or you may register each individual family member and go through the checkout for each one (the benefit of using separate registrations is the ability to use different credit cards for each registrant).
2. On the ‘My Basket’ page, in the cost column you will see a box next to the word schedule. Check the box for each camp for which you wish to pay 50% now and 50% on April 15, 2011.
3. Your ‘My Basket’ page will refresh and add a section to your basket describing the charges.
a. The basket charge row will show the total for your transaction, before the payment is split.

c. The payment from credit card row is the amount that will be charged to your card today.

4. Enter your credit card payment information. This will be the card that will be used for both today’s payment and the schedule payment for April 15, 2011. The same card must be used for both payments. If your card expires before April 15, 2011 you will still be able to schedule the payment but you must provide us with your new expiration date no later than April 8, 2011.
5. Click ‘Complete Transaction’. If you are succesffully enrolled a confirmation will be emailed to you immediately.
6. If you wish to waitlist for a camp you must click the waitlist button and complete the checkout process. You will not be charged. You are only confirmed for the waitlist when you receive a waitlist confirmation. If a spot becomes available, a recreation supervisor will contact you.
Please note: You will only be able to use one credit card for each person’s complete transaction. If you wish to use a different credit card per registrant then you must checkout separately for each registrant. It is a good idea to verify in advance that your credit card company will allow a charge in the amount you plan to spend.
Financial AssistanceThe Park District of Highland Park offers Grant-In-Aid to qualifying families in Highland Park needing financial assistance. Counselor In TrainingGrades 7–10
Now you can train to become a camp counselor. If you’re in grades 7-10 and love to work with young children, Counselor In Training is for you!
Participants entering grades 7-9 in the fall of 2011 may choose to be a Counselor in Training (CIT) for Camp Sunshine held at West Ridge Center or Ravinia School or KinderSports held at Danny Cunniff Park. For those entering grades 9 and 10 in the fall of 2011, CIT is available for Junior and Senior Crew held at Sunset Woods Park.
CITs will develop their own self-esteem and leadership abilities as they work with preschool-age, kindergarten or elementary aged campers who love to look up to older children as role models. Participants assist our counselors in leading activities, learning safety techniques and communication skills. CITs must be energetic, have good communication skills and want to work with children.
Due to the popularity of this program, interested candidates will be interviewed for the positions. On November 11, 2010 and November 22, 2010 we will be holding interviews from 9:00-5:00pm. All interviews will take place at West Ridge Center. Please call 847.579.3120 to schedule an interview starting on Monday, October 24. Candidates who are chosen from the interview process will be able to register through the camp registration process. You are not assured a spot until you have successfully registered due to maximum enrollment.
CITs must bring a sack lunch and beverage to camp every day. They will receive a camp T-shirt on the first day of camp. Grades 9 and 10 Crew Camp CITs will also assist staff on camp field trips. Busing to and from home is not available for CITs.
Join us this summer and be a CIT— you’ll find the experience of working with young children extraordinarily rewarding.

Sand TrackersGrades 1–2
Embark on a summer adventure along the beautiful shores of Lake Michigan. Along with splishing and splashing on the beautiful shores of the lake, Sand Trackers will learn and develop an appreciation for this valuable fresh water resource.
A love for the beach and water is a must for this nature-based camp as days are spent exploring and combing the shore for treasure. Each day we will discover a different theme from boats to animals, sand, water and maps–just to name a few, and play games, go on treasure hunts, conduct experiments and get creative with crafts, all to reflect the theme of the day. Special celebration days such as “Hawaiian Day” and “Pirate Day” will add to the summer fun down at the beach.
Your child will enjoy instructional intro-to-swim lessons at the indoor pool at the Recreation Center of Highland Park. We highly recommend you supplement the introductory lessons offered in this camp with a swim lesson/class offered through the Recreation Center. Call 847.579.4051 for details.
Campers are supervised by a certified lifeguard while swimming at the beach. Staff members are certified in Red Cross first aid and CPR to ensure camper’s safety at all times. Campers must bring a sack lunch and beverage to camp every day. They will receive a Sand Trackers beach towel and water bottle on the first day of camp.
So come on out and make some tracks in the sand this summer. Beach treasures are waiting to be discovered!

Calling all serious outdoor enthu-siasts! If you want to spend your summer trying all of the adven-ture and survival-based activities that you’ve always dreamed about, then it’s time to become a Trekker! Camping, caving, hiking, SCUBA diving, canoeing, biking, fishing and meeting live animals are all part of the adventure-packed activities taking place during the 7-weeks of Trekkers camp.
Trekkers spend the summer outdoors at Heller Nature Center as well as going away on field trips, campouts and adventure-based activities, where utilizing important social skills such as respect and responsibility are key.
Survival skills including starting a fire without matches, learning about edible wild plants, camping and orienteering challenge Trekkers both mentally and physically. Trekkers coordinate all of the skills learned during the summer to become “survival experts” during the last week of camp when they are challenged to survive in the woods of Heller Nature Center and sleep in shelters that they have built. It is truly a unique experience for everyone!
Staff members are certified in Red Cross first aid and CPR to ensure camper’s safety at all times.
This camp features five overnight camping trips ranging from one to three nights (weekends excluded). Campers will be bused to campout locations. Campers are taught that the most successful ath-lete is the one who plays fairly, gives 100 percent of his or her effort, has fun and congratulates all players at the end of the day. SeniorSports campers build self-esteem, self-awareness, good sportsmanship and leadership as they participate in choosing teammates, deciding which sports to play and creating new games.

This is our premier tennis camp for the ultimate in summer ten-nis fun! A 3- or 4-week camp for boys and girls at the Stroker II and above levels, this camp offers intensive, fun instruction in tennis with other activities throughout the summer as well.
Our tennis pros will help you improve your ten-nis stroke development through special activities, games and strategy sessions. Campers make up the Park District’s Junior Tennis Team and play matches with surrounding area clubs several times per session (note that new campers' abil-ity level must be tested prior to camp). Instructor to camper ratio is 1:5.
In addition to tennis, campers will swim at Hidden Creek AquaPark or Rosewood Beach and visit Heller Nature Center as well as participate in other activi-ties including ice skating, bowling, mini golf, laser tag, basketball, sack races, dunk tank and even a movie! Campers will learn the benefits of a positive attitude, communication with teammates, cooperation, coordi-nation and respect for themselves and others.
Campers must bring a sack lunch and beverage to camp every day, and they will receive a camp T-shirt and backpack on the first day of camp. All lesson and activity fees are included.
Boost your self-confidence in tennis and in life when you participate in our Tennis Plus Camp this summer!

Hook, Line and SinkerGrades 4–8
If you’re a fish-fanatic, this camp is for you! This 1–week mini camp is perfect for both boys and girls who love to fish — or who would like to learn! You’ll spend your days discovering the secrets to fishing success.
Along the way, you’ll learn about different types of fish, bait, lures and equipment, as well as aquatic ecosystems and lives of various fish. We’ll visit several local fishing spots and learn to predict what might make a good fishing hole.
But wait, there’s more . . . we’ll go swimming, salmon fishing on Lake Michigan and learn to fly fish.
Campers will spend the day fishing, learning patience (a critical fishing skill!) and how to encour-age others. The staff are fishing enthusiasts, so kids will learn to fish the proper way right from the beginning! Campers must bring a sack lunch and beverage to camp every day. The Park District will provide a water bottle the first day of camp. Fishing gear is also provided.
If you’re hooked on fishing, join us this summer at Hook, Line and Sinker!

If you’re looking for an intense week of tennis, register for one (or two) of the Tennis Plus Mini 1-week camps. Boys and girls at the Stroker II and above levels will receive the same type of instruction as our longer Tennis Plus Camp.
Our tennis pros (at an 8:1 camper-staff ratio) provide instruction in tennis basics and funda-mentals, as well as matches with surrounding area clubs. Just like Tennis Plus Camp, in addition to tennis each week, Tennis Plus Mini Camp will include swimming at Hidden Creek AquaPark or Rosewood Beach as well as a variety of other activities including bowling, mini golf, basketball and laser tag. Campers will learn the benefits of a positive attitude, communication with teammates, cooperation, coordination and respect for them-selves and others.
