1 President’s Greeting Greetings to all as we move into this busy month of September! We were blessed with a true summer of consistently hot weather which, as I write this, is still with us. It seems to me that if we don’t have children returning to school we still think of this time as the beginning of a new Parish Nursing year. Some ministries may have been put on hold for the summer or at least functioned with reduced intensity. For those of you who attended the Canadian Association for Parish Nursing Ministry conference in Toronto, I am sure you will agree that the Kitchener-Waterloo Parish Nursing Group mounted an excellent conference program from June 2 to 5 in Toronto. ere is no better way for me personally and hopefully for some of you to reaffirm your Ministry than through networking and collaboration with like-minded, spiritually -grounded parish nurses! I look forward to the glorious fall colours and extend to you my best wishes and my prayers as we look to another year of Health and Healing Ministry within our congregations, our clergy and ourselves. PNIG Bylaw changes to be discussed – October 2016At the AGM, members were asked to come prepared to discuss proposed changes to PNIG bylaws:

This is to give notice of a vote on the following Bylaw amendments.

Proposed Bylaw Amendment #1:To change the eligibility for President of PNIG to be anyone with parish nursing education completion rather than a practicing parish nurse within a congregation.

Proposed Bylaw Amendment #2:To change the four executive positions to be co-positions.

• Co-President• Co-Vice-President• Co-Secretary/Treasurer• Co-Communication

This allows for mentoring and smoother succession planning.

Notice: Education CommitteeAre you an educator? Do you ascribe to life-long learning?

PNIG is looking to set up an Education Committee to help organize educational sessions for members and to collaborate with other IGs. In this new age of the internet, sessions do not have to involve travelling. Setting up webinars and other virtual means of gathering people are all possible ways of sharing information.

If you have ideas about what PNs might be interested in learning, please contact Joanne Jasper at: [email protected] .

Submitted by Anne Marie Mohler Dear Colleagues,

I wanted to take this opportunity to let you know as your interim political ENO what I have done this past year related to RNAO PNIG activities.

In February 2016, I attended Queen’s Park Day and Assembly which I covered in the May newsletter. I also attended PNIG President’s breakfast at the RNAO AGM in June.

To date, I have participated in three teleconferences with RNAO policy and nursing division. Shelley Martel facilitates these calls and it has been a pleasure to work with her.

Shelley left RNAO in August so I will keep you updated on her replacement. The teleconferences allow RNAO to share updates on action alerts, submissions, reports, and legislation. It also allows the ENO’s to update RNAO on Interest Group and Chapter activities called Checking the Pulse. Checking the Pulse information is incorporated into Members Voices (MV). MV updates are done by regional reps and sent to the President. The MV report is due to RNAO four times a year and is mandatory in order for funding to continue. The MV report focuses on four ENDS objectives set by RNAO.

END 1 - Engage with registered nurses and nursing students to stimulate membership and promote the value of belonging to their professional organization.

END 2 - RNAO advances the role and image of nurses as members of a vital, knowledge-driven, caring profession, and as significant contributors to health.

END 3 - RNAO speaks out on emerging issues that impact on nurses and the nursing profession, health and health care.

END 4 - RNAO influences healthy public policy to positively impact the determinants of health, supporting Medicare and strengthening a publicly funded, not-for-profit health-care system.

I have been assisting Joanne Jasper this year with MV reports. It has been an excellent learning experience and it never ceases to amaze me how much is going on in various regions. We still have vacancies in some regions so I encourage you to consider taking a leadership role. The MV reports are on line and can be found at: myrnao.ca/membersvoices .

This spring I sent an email blast out to members encouraging you to meet with your MPP’s during nurses’ week and TYMTW. This fall we will be asking members to participate in QPOR. Please let me know if you are interested. RNAO provides speaking notes and toolkits when visiting MPP’s so be sure to take advantage of these resources I look forward to seeing you at the AGM October 1, in Toronto. My home church is hosting this year and the planning committee is busy preparing for the business meeting and an afternoon education session.

Into the Light: Walking – with a Parish Nurse toward better Mental HealthSaturday, September 24th, 2016. Location: Peoples Church, 374 Sheppard Avenue East

This Continuing Education, day-long event will be held at Peoples Church. The event will showcase some of the leading experts in mental health research and how their research can impact the ‘generalist’ work of the Parish Nurse. We know that 1 in 5 Canadians will suffer from some form of mental illness. This is a huge motivator for researchers who have made it a mission to find new and innovative ways to treat the myriad of mental illnesses and how one specific illness can present very differently in different individuals. Written by Jeanne Lambert St. Michael’s College School was the setting for the 2016 CAPNM Conference and AGM located in the centre of Toronto. “Embracing Life’s Rhythms – Loving God, Loving, Loving Neighbour, Loving Self” was the theme for the weekend event. The green space and trees surrounded by long-standing buildings of the college was a reminder of keeping balance and embracing life’s rhythms, and making it easy to remember to be grateful to Creator God. The worship and reflective activities were warm and welcoming. Fr Mark Miller was present over the weekend.

Wayne Muller was the leader for the retreat parts of the weekend – the ‘Loving Self’ part – and he shared his wisdom and experience in a manner that allowed participants to reflect on their personal journeys as well as the collective journey as members of CAPNM.

Muller reminded participants of their need for rest and letting go of their need to be doing.

Two speakers from Romero House shared their experiences living and volunteering in that community. The conference theme ‘Loving Neighbour’ was clearly exemplified in this presentation about residents living as neighbours rather than simply clients as they establish themselves in Canada and create community together.

Many PNIG members were present and had been deeply involved as hosts for the event. The AGM portions were interspersed throughout the weekend with the inspiring talks presenting a pleasant rhythm of activity which was easy to embrace. Kudos to the organizers and helpers who made this event such a success!

CAPNM Conference and AGM – June 2-5, 2016

“When we are lost or afraid, we can tend

to isolate, to bear down and get through

it, to make it on our own. Jesus says,

‘When two or more are gathered, there

I am in your midst.’ When we enter into

companionship with another, something

larger than ourselves is born. Choose a

few people whose companionship you

will seek when times are difficult. One of

the most precious gifts we can offer is to

be a place of refuge, to be Sabbath for

one another.”
