FR. JOHNS DESKTOPOn Wednesday the news media reported that Pope Benedict XVI will

make a State Visit to Britain. This means that he will be coming at theinvitation of Her Majesty the Queen and the British Government. When PopeJohn Paul II visited in 1982, it was a pastoralvisit, i.e. at the invitation of theBishops of the respective hierarchies (England & Wales, Scotland). At thetime of writing there is no official confirmation from Buckingham Palace butpeople are talking about the visit taking place next September, possiblycoinciding with the beatification of John Henry Cardinal Newman inBirmingham. Pope Benedict is known to have a keen interest in the life andwritings of the late Cardinal Newman, probably the most famous convert

from the Church of England to the Catholic Church. Let us pray that we mayprepare well for this visit and that the visit will be a success.

In the meantime, the relics of St Thrse continue their tour of the country. Crowds are flocking to attend Masses inher honour and to have the opportunity of touching the casket containing the Saints remains, in many places queuingthroughout the night. If you have access to the internet, you can see pictures and reports athttp://catholicrelics.wordpress.com/. So let us continue our preparation for the visit of the relics to Aylesford which isexpected to be a huge event. The programme at Aylesford is on the notice board and can be downloaded fromhttp://www.thefriars.org.uk/retreatpilgrim/Therese Programme.pdf. Copies are available in the church foyer for those whodo not have internet access. If you would like to have a rose placed near the relics during the weekend of 9

    th 11

    th

October for you or a loved one, orders must be sent to The Friars by 30th

September. Forms are available in the churchfoyer. If you would like a seat on the coach to Aylesford, sign up as places are disappearing. If you plan to go by car, leave in plenty of time!

The relics will also be at Westminster Cathedral 12th 15

thOctober. The schedule of services is on the notice

board and is available via http://www.rcdow.org.uk/therese/. Entrance to services marked with an asterisk is by free ticketonly. To obtain tickets either apply to the parish office or email Archbishop McDonalds private secretary Fr PhilipGlandfield ([email protected]).

The visit of St Thrses relics is a time of grace for us. St Thrses feast day is this Thursday. Why not make aspecial effort to come to Mass that day? Fr. John

PARISH DIRECTOR OF MUSICMany parishes have a director of music to train the choir andhelp lead the people in singing. Maybe we should have one forthis parish. Normally they are paid for their services. In this waythe parish can be sure of commitment and the music director hasan incentive to work. I am happy to consider this possibility. Ifyou or anyone you know might be interested, they should get incontact via the parish office. The candidate need not necessarilybe a Catholic but he/she should have some knowledge ofliturgical music and must be prepared to work with the parishpriest. Fr John.

FAST FOR LIFE AND GOOD COUNSEL NETWORKGood Counsel Network have asked if we might fast on Tuesday29

thSeptember, feast of St Michael and the Archangels, praying

for the end of abortion and euthanasia. Michael Almond, whoretired this July after 34 years in the Ambulance Service inLeeds, was disturbed to learn that Sister Chinedum wassometimes left on her own praying in front of an abortion centrein Bedford Square in London. So he plans to cycle from hishome in Leeds to London, about 270 miles, to join Sr Chinedumand other supporters at the centre on 7

    thOctober, feast of Our

Lady of the Rosary, between 11am and 1pm. If you would like tosponsor Mr Almond, please sign up on the sponsor sheet on thenotice board or hand your donation into the parish office. Formore information contact 020 7723 1740.
