Sweet Summer Sisterhood

Sarah Hall Simmons, Colleen MacCrory, and Adrienne Stackable of Alpha Delta Pi came together for a fun “girls’ weekend” at Lake Travis. Sarah Hall came all the way from Tennessee!

Study Abroad Summer, 2011

It was a busy summer for many of our Panhellenic women as they went across seas to

study and travel! Check out where some of women went and what they got to experience!

“My name is Rachel Sload and I am currently a junior business major. This summer I studied abroad on the Denia, Spain trip where I had an amazing experience for five fun weeks. While abroad I took Spanish Cultures and Literature classes that were really interesting, but the best part was being immersed in the culture and surrounded by the wonderful people there. I made so many new friends from Baylor as well as many friends in Spain who I have kept in touch with. I was able to travel to many of the most well known cities in Spain such as Barcelona, Madrid and Granada as well as some smaller towns that are usually unknown to tourists. The huge advantage to this study abroad program was the great access to so many amazing places I would not have been able to visit if I had traveled alone or with my family. Dr. Linda McManness, the Spanish professor who has lead the trip for many years, was a wonderful resource that made the trip unforgettable. We visited "El Museo Del Prado" in Madrid, "Sagrada Familia" in Barcelona and even the "Alhambra" in Granada. My favorite part of this trip was that I truly felt like I "lived" there and was not just a "visitor" in another country. After the initial excitement of being in Spain I began to feel very comfortable with their way of life and customs, and really enjoyed what the country had to offer. I loved walking to the beach to study, going to grab frozen yogurt downtown with friends, or just having dinner outside our favorite pizza place. It was truly an incredible experience and I definitely plan to go back as soon as I can!” – Rachel Sload, Alpha Delta Pi

Alpha Chi Omega’s Shae Padgett, Emma Latham, and Lyndsey Isbell traveled with Baylor in Great Britain this summer. The girls had so much fun traveling around Europe. A highlight of their trip was meeting Selena Gomez in the airport!

“This summer, I studied abroad with the European Entrepreneurship Experience Program. It is a 35-day study abroad program that visits entrepreneurial businesses in seven different countries, including Czech Republic, Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, France, and England. I had an experience of a lifetime learning about various businesses in Eastern and Western Europe. A few of the amazing experiences include the United Nations building and Girard-Perregaux in Geneva, the BMW headquarters in Munich, and the Bank of England in London. I was also able to visit the beaches of Normandy, two concentration camps, Versailles, the Eagles Nest, and of course the Texas Embassy! This trip was such an amazing opportunity because it allowed me to explore my two passions by traveling with new friends and learning more about the entrepreneurial spirit around the world.” -Briana Treadaway, Delta Delta Delta

“I had the privilege of studying Marketing and Management Information Systems this summer at Imperial College in London, England. Every day was like a fairy tale; six of my Pi Phi sisters went with me, and we got to make priceless memories together. Because we were there for six weeks, we had the opportunity to take several day trips, everything from hiking to walking along the coast, exploring castles and underground war tunnels. A week before arriving in London, we got to make our way across Italy, seeing Rome, Florence, Assisi and a small lake town between Italy and Switzerland called Stresa. This town was quaint, beautiful, charming – everything that encompasses picturesque Italy. My favorite part of studying abroad was the relationships that were built between people on this trip; I have laughed harder and experienced more with those thirty people than I ever thought possible. I would definitely urge anyone to study abroad if they ever get the chance!” -Tally Blair, Pi Beta Phi

“I studied abroad in Denia, Spain this summer through the Baylor program with 22 other students. We each took two Spanish classes during the day and in the afternoons we would explore the town, go to the beach, shop, or try all the fun ice cream shops. Altogether it was such a fun trip abroad with a great group of people!” –Simmons Prieskorn, Chi Omega

“This summer I studied abroad during the four weeks of July with 'Baylor in Italy.' I spent two weeks in Rome, a day in Florence and Venice, and then I traveled all around Sicily, from Capri and Syracuse to Palermo and Paestum. I spent those weeks giving presentations on sites and studying the Italian topography, which includes a location's history, ancient architecture, and culture. It was such a unique experience because I was learning about a subject I was not familiar with at all, as I am a pre-med University Scholar. Although the classes were different than what I was used to, I immersed myself in the Italian culture and learned a lot through the experience. I would encourage anyone to go on 'Baylor in Italy' or to take any study abroad opportunity that they are interested in. It's so much fun!”- Melissa Meyer, Zeta Tau Alpha

Chocolate Drizzled Trail Mix

Grab a book and spend some time out on the porch swing with this delicious and easy to

make fall snack!

Mix nuts, sunflower seeds, coconut flakes, raisins, and

dried cranberries or cherries. Spread mixture on baking sheets lined with waxed

paper. Melt chocolate chips in microwave, then pour

chocolate over baking sheet in ribbons. Let cool, break

apart, and enjoy!

3 cups nuts (I used peanuts, almonds, and pecans!) ½ cup sunflower seeds ½ cup coconut flakes 1 cup raisins ½ cup dried cranberries or cherries 1 cup chocolate chips

What Did YOUR Advisor Do This

Summer?

Dr. David and Priscilla Henry, advisers for Alpha Delta Pi, led a group of students to Hong Kong and other areas in China for the Baylor i5 program – Immersion into International Interdisciplinary Innovation. The trip was June 29 – August 7, 2011. They had a lot of great experience and were introduced to a lot of interesting foods!

Liza Pugliese Hallsten, one of Alpha Chi Omega’s new advisors, got married this summer! She was a lovely bride, and the ladies of Alpha Chi wish her the best of luck as she starts a new chapter of her life with a beautiful marriage!

“I do volunteer work at Camp Stewart for Boys--going down at the end of each term and handling Lost and Found for between 100 and nearly 300 guys ages 6-16. Also, I spend a week each summer at Paisano Baptist Encampment in the Davis Mountains. My great grandfather was one of the original founders of the cowboy camp meeting, and I currently serve on the Board. It's very rustic and old-fashioned!” – Kathy Hillman, Delta Delta Delta Adviser

“We chose the Caribbean because my husband and son are both scuba divers and the Grand Cayman and Cozumel venues were perfect for their dives. Meredith and I only needed a beach, beautiful water, and a lounge chair. Of course, we also included rain forest zip lining in Jamaica, swimming with the stingrays in Caymans, and parasailing in Mexico to keep everyone busy and happy. We sang karaoke, enjoyed wonderfully choreographed shows, danced while listening to our favorite lounge singers, and generally lost ourselves to family.” –Cindee Millard, Chi Omega Recruitment Adviser

We hosted 61 send-offs, which were attended by approximately 3,000 incoming students, current students, alumni and friends. “This summer in celebration of our 10-year wedding anniversary, my husband Derek and I set out on a 10-day family vacation adventure with our three kids. Our first stop was Albuquerque, New Mexico, where we lived for a year and a half after we graduated from Baylor. We were able to revisit many "firsts" with our children -- our first home, where our first jobs were after college, and even the hospital where our first child, Bryce, was born. On the day of our actual 10-year anniversary we returned to the site of our wedding ceremony, Loretto Chapel in Santa Fe. Getting to share this milestone with our children was an amazing experience!

After spending a few days in New Mexico we headed west to California. We were able to spend time with Derek's aunt and uncle in San Diego while taking in the world famous San Diego Zoo, Coronado Beach, and snorkeling in La Jolla. No trip to California would be complete without a stop in Los Angeles. We ran in to several Baylor fans and alumni while sporting our green and gold at Disneyland and made a final stop in Hollywood taking in the Walk of Fame, Grauman's Chinese Theater, and Beverly Hills before heading back to Bear Country. In all, we covered over 3800 miles, relived special memories, and made many new memories along the way!” - Julie Tonkin, Zeta Tau Alpha Adviser

Welcome Back to School, Advisers!

Back to Class! It’s time to pick up those books, grab a coffee, and

settle into your usual seat in the library…fall classes are here! Let these back to school tips from the

Panhellenic chapters help you out!

Take time to sit down and write every assignment due in your planner. It will

help you plan ahead and stay organized!

Don’t waste your allotted absences, you never know when you will really need

them!

Your planner isn’t just for assignments, it can also be used to help you keep

your money in order. Write down due dates for bills, dues, and other expenses

so you don’t bust your budget!

Make a back-to-school goal to get more sleep this semester! Make it a point to relax a little before bedtime by turning off electronics and winding down. If you can get a quality night’s rest, you

will be energized and ready to pay attention in the morning!

If you’re having trouble in a class, don’t be afraid to ask your professor, a sister, or a tutor for help! There’s no shame in

asking for the help that you need!

Set rules and goals for yourself! Tell yourself that if you study for 45

minutes, you get a 10-minute media break.

Alpha Chi Omega paired up with Sigma Phi Epsilon to host this year’s Dating Doctor event. There were over 1,300 students in attendance, and David Coleman was extremely happy with the show!

On August 22, the ladies of Tri Delta held their “Delta’s Only Back to School Bash” at the Baylor Marina! After a summer apart, the girls decided to have a snowball fight to help cool down and take some stress off of the first day of school!

Pi Beta Phi held their annual All-University Howdy Dance on September 9 in Burleson Quad. Complete with free Vitek’s and a live band, dancing the night away was a ton of fun!

The ladies of Zeta Tau Alpha had a blast at their annual Welcome Back Bash. The girls enjoyed BBQ, live music from Emory Quinn, and spending time with sisters after a long summer apart!
