Philanthropy In Action

Baylor University’s Panhellenic chapters have already been working hard this semester raising money for their

national philanthropies and providing service!

Delta Delta Delta The ladies of Tri Delta provide service

at the Boys and Girls Club, Fuzzy Friends, and St. Catherine's Nursing Home. They also raise money for St.

Jude Children’s Hospital through events such as Kicks for Kids, DHOP, Spaghetti Not-So-Formal with Alpha Tau Omega, Fright Nights with Phi

Gamma Delta, and the Sincerely Yours Letter Writing Campaign.

Chi Omega

Alpha Chi Omega

Chi Omega’s national philanthropy is the Make-A-Wish Foundation. The Theta Kappa Chapter of Chi Omega recently hosted a Lilly Pulitzer Trunk Show in their chapter room. 10% of the proceeds went to the Make-A-

Wish Foundation. Their annual Chili Cook-Off raised enough money to grant two wishes this year. Chi Omega also plays with kids in

the Waco community each Thursday.

Alpha Chi Omega works weekly with the Waco Family Abuse Center to provide meals for the women and children that live

there. In the recent ice and snowstorms, the center’s roof collapsed. The chapter helped by donating blankets, pillows, paper towels, light bulbs, laundry detergent, and trash bags. Alpha Chi’s service chairs are beginning to plan their annual event, Take Back the Night, where women come tells their stories about surviving

through abusive situations help students understand how they can keep themselves safe from these situations.

Zeta Tau Alpha

Chi Omega’s annual Chili Cook-Off

Zeta Tau Alpha’s national philanthropy is Breast Cancer Education and Awareness. Recently, Zeta teamed up with

Baylor Athletics to promote their Pink Out women’s basketball game against Texas A&M University. The ladies promoted the game with flyers, a Facebook event, and sold “Think Pink!” t-shirts to students and faculty. Zeta currently has 16 members

serving on the Relay For Life committee. Each girl is on a committee to help with the development of Relay For Life, and all members of the chapter will be attending the event. Zeta is also hosting an event to decorate luminaria bags prior to the

event. In the upcoming month, girls will help find survivors to recognize at the event as well as help with set up and break down

that night.

Pi Beta Phi Pi Beta Phi tutors children at Doris Miller

Elementary, helping with them with reading. Also, every Wednesday they team

up with Kappa Sigma and play with the children that live at Estella Maxey

Housing. “The kids love every minute of it!” says member, Catherine Neilson. Recently, Pi Phi has been helping a

woman who worked as a Librarian for Baylor and suffered a house fire. They are

making her dinner every other Wednesday, alternating with Chi Omega.

Kappa Kappa Gamma Kappa’s philanthropy is Reading is Fundamental. Every week the ladies go to Parkdale Elementary School and read with two second grade classes.

“The kids look forward to us coming every week and it is always a blessing being able to work with the school and read to their kids,” says member, Carli Miller. Recently, Kappa had a basketball

booth set up at KOT Fishery, an event for people with special needs in the Waco community.

Member Caroline Gaines says, “This was a great way to reach out to Waco through Kappa and we

had an absolute blast loving on these people!” Another exciting event the chapter has coming up

is an Easter Carnival and egg hunt for Compassion Ministries, which is

houses unemployed women.

Kappa Alpha Theta

Alpha Delta Pi

Kappa Alpha Theta started off the semester participating in Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service. They constructed box lunches and distributed them to volunteers at the event, and were even featured on a local 10 o’clock newscast! Theta is also teaming up with Student Foundation to collect teddy bears for the Waco Advocacy Center for Crime Victims and Children. The bears are given to adults and children who have been victims of sexual assault. Members

also participate weekly at Ballerina Dreams and Campus Kitchens. Theta also put on their annual

Denim Dash to raise money for their philanthropy, Court Appointed Special Advocates.

In addition to biweekly trips to the Ronald McDonald House in Temple, where they cook and clean as well as hand out holiday gifts, the Zeta Chi ladies also contribute to Alex’s Lemonade Stand. In honor of Alex Scott, who lost her battle with cancer

in 2004, Alex’s Lemonade Stand is a national organization whose funds go toward childhood cancer research. Alpha

Delta Pi runs a stand on campus during Diadeloso and other events such as Premiere weekends. They hand out free

lemonade, with a donation to the ALS foundation. This semester, they are looking forward to their annual Pop Tab

drive, in which groups compete to raise the most pop tabs to raise funds for Ronald McDonald House.

Scholarship Tips Keep your grades up and your study habits in check with these helpful tips!

-Don't be afraid to contact your financial aid office. They are great at helping students out! -Books such as "Scholarship Handbook 2011," available at local bookstores, have lots of scholarships available for a variety of needs. -Apply for scholarships even if you don't think you will receive any. You never know what will happen! -Talk to your department's office, there may be scholarships available for your major that you may not know about! -Check out websites that serve as databases for scholarships. Just type "scholarships" in your search engine! Be careful and make sure that they are valid websites, not scams!

When looking for scholarships…

Do… -Eat large enough, well-balanced meals -Drink lots of water -Choose healthier, more filling snacks such as a tortilla with cheese, fresh fruit, or a bowl of cereal.

Don’t… -Skip breakfast -Drink a lot of caffeine or energy drinks. The spike in blood sugar triggers insulin, which leads to lower energy levels and possible headaches and hunger.

Feed Your Brain!

It is best to review the material right after class when it's still fresh in your memory.

Don't try to do all your studying the night before the test.

Instead space out your studying, review class materials at least several times a week, focusing on one topic at a time.

Have all of your study material in front of you: lecture notes,

course textbooks, study guides and any other relevant material.

Find a comfortable and quiet place to study with good lighting and little distractions (try avoiding your own bed, it is very

tempting to just lie down and take a nap).

Start out by studying the most important information.

Learn the general concepts first; don't worry about learning the details until you have learned the main ideas.

Take notes and write down a summary of the important ideas

as you read through your study material.

Take short breaks frequently. Your memory retains the information that you study at the beginning and the end better

than what you study in the middle.

girls participated in songs with older members and got to perform them at their Initiation Banquet. The new

member educators kept the girls active with fun activities such as a game night in the chapter room and

an etiquette tea at Olive Branch. The girls supported Theta’s SING act by making adorable posters, and

cheered the chapter on at our dress rehearsal. The new members are excited to perform themselves, and will be

participating in Stomp Fest.

Kappa Kappa Gamma took 67 new members this semester. In addition to new member meeting, the girls participated in Bible studies with upperclassmen, giving

them a chance to grow deeper with a small group of women. The ladies also had tons of fun playing Bingo,

going to movies, and having a skate party at Skate World. They have also gotten to know other chapter’s

new classes through mixers such as Pizza with Chi Omega, Common Grounds with Pi Beta Phi, and a Baylor basketball game with Kappa Alpha Theta.

MARCH 3, 2011 BAYLOR PANHELLENIC

Faculty and Advisor Spotlight The faculty and Greek advisors here at Baylor University play a huge roll in Greek Life and our achievements. The

Panhellenic chapters would like to take time to thank these wonderful people for everything they do!

Phyllis Tippit Baylor Interdisciplinary Core Teaches World Cultures I, Natural World I and II, Biblical Heritage, and Ethics “If you can’t tell from the different classes she teachers, Dr. Tippit has a variety of interests and can impart a lot of information in one class period. She is always excited about what she’s talking about and makes the information relevant to our lives. She has a very genuine smile during lectures and creates a comfortable classroom atmosphere. She will be retiring at the end of the semester and I have been very lucky to have her twice before she ends her long career at Baylor!” - Kelsey Henry, Alpha Delta Pi

Becky King Associate VP for Information Technology “She is always there with a helping hand. She finds any way to be able to assist us and help us accomplish our goals. She really shows how much she loves the girls in Alpha Chi and we are so blessed to have her as a part of our chapter.”-Emily Guerra, Alpha Chi Omega

Laura Sumrall Advisor, Alpha Chi Omega “She is one of the funniest people I have ever met. She is always happy and makes all the girls in chapter smile.”- Garrett Gohlke, sophomore “Last year she performed her Alpha Chi SING act in front of chapter. She could still remember it from 20 years ago, it was so funny.” - Maria Moutos, Alpha Chi Omega

Sara Dolan Advisor, Alpha Delta Pi “Sara Dolan is an incredible woman who is extremely dedicated to Alpha Delta Pi as an organization and has contributed significantly to the Zeta Chi chapter at Baylor University by serving as the Standards and Ethics Advisor. She has also served as an Advisor for the Alpha Beta chapter at the University of Iowa and the Gamma Lambda chapter at the University of Rhode Island. She has a Ph.D. in Psychology, is a member of the Psychology and Neuroscience Department at Baylor and is currently conducting research in substance abuse and addiction. Dr. Dolan does an amazing job of working with the Director of Standards and Ethics and the President of our chapter to ensure that members are having the best experience possible. She is talented at handling challenging situations and helping bring conflicts to a positive resolution. The Zeta Chi chapter is so blessed to have Sara Dolan as an Advisor and we are incredibly thankful for her dedication and guidance.“ -Maddie Moody, former chapter president, Alpha Delta Pi

Alexandre Thiltges Teaches French and French Cinema since 2008 “Despite the fact that Dr. Thiltges is actually from France, his teaching is enhanced by his obvious affection for his students and for the subject being taught. He keeps class entertaining through his animated gestures and sense of humor. He never simply lectures, but engages the class by asking questions and making us “teach him” a concept. Many of our activities are very original and strange which makes class presentations really funny. He likes to joke around but knows when to be serious and how to make us understand new concepts and vocabulary.” - Kelsey Polarolo, Kappa Kappa Gamma

David Murdock Judicial Affairs for Student Life, Baylor University “A man who works tirelessly behind the scenes, Mr. Murdock is one of the most genuine and intentional people I have ever met. He is a wonderful advisor, who gives helpful and much appreciated advice whenever needed. The Student Court would simply not function without his valued insight and welcoming personality. He is approachable and greatly respected by all, and will leave a mark on all of the lives he has touched at Baylor for years to come.” – Ashley Miller, Chi Omega

Kat Evans Career Services/Career Advisor, Baylor University “Kat Evans is such a wonderful career advisor and mentor. She truly cares about each student and helping them with whatever they need during their time at Baylor and their time preparing for graduation. Kat organizes and helps students at many career fairs and with individual issues, like perfecting a resume. She also helps students by giving various presentations on the different aspects of job and internship searching. Her style of presentation makes preparing for graduation easier and a little less stressful because of her caring and personable nature. She makes students feel comfortable and ensures that they are receiving the help that they need. I have known Kat for 4 years now and she is always one of the easiest people to talk to. She has helped me with questions about various school issues and many life problems and questions as well. I honestly look up to her and admire her drive and desire to help anyone and everyone that she can.” – Lauren Marr, former chapter president, ZTA LisaJ.Asher

Karen Lancaster Has been teaching Marketing at Baylor University since 2007 “Mrs. Lancaster is a great teacher! She keeps her classes entertained with the material that could become boring if not taught well. She knows what she is teaching and has real world experience in the subject. Mrs. Lancaster makes her students feel comfortable in the classroom, and she does a good job of allowing students to add their input. She makes herself available for students to come talk to her in her office, and when a student is in there she focuses all her attention on them. Being a mom of two teenagers, she understands a lot of what her students are going through and the trends we are into. She is such a nice person and has made me very interested in marketing!” - Meagan Cousins, Chi Omega

Cindee Millard Adviser, Chi Omega, Theta Kappa Chapter Has been advising for 22 years “Mrs. Millard is a genuine and caring woman of the Lord. Her personality is bubbly and full of spirit. She always manages to put a smile on my face and brighten my day when I see her. I have known her since my first semester freshman year and she has served as a “Waco Mother” to me for the past two years. I am so thankful to have such a strong, Christian, role model in my life. In the many times she has opened her home to me and provided a home cooked meal, my favorite memory is the time her entire family and I gathered around the kitchen table for a game of “Chicken Foot.” I felt at home and so welcomed into her household. Also, she makes the best pot roast!” - Ashleyanne Thornhill, Chi Omega

Check This Out! Jenna Reno, a Master’s student in the Department of Communication Studies here at Baylor, is collecting

information from a survey on body image. The purpose of this study is to examine functions of perceived

organizational norms regarding body weight and their relationship with and effect on body image. This study will examine norms for body weight in relation to three

variables. First, this research will seek to identify the effect of perceived norms for weight on body esteem.

Second, this research will examine how an individual’s assimilation within the organization potentially

mediates these effects. Third, this research will also seek to identify significant organizational messages related to body image. It is a quick, one time survey. Please

help her out!

Julie Tonkin Advisor, Zeta Tau Alpha “Jules is not only the advisor to our sorority, but our friend as well. When we need advice, or when we have an issue to work through, Jules is always there to lend an ear. Our members are comfortable asking her anything, and she quickly becomes a friend to everyone. She has a true passion to see our chapter succeed, and plays an active role in doing so. It’s almost impossible to point towards only one memory of Jules that shows how special she is! Jules and her entire family, which includes her wonderful husband and three adorable kids, have been beyond supportive to me since joining Zeta Tau Alpha. Two years ago, I was set up on a blind date with a member of the fraternity that Jules’ husband advises. I remember talking to Jules and all the girls during our executive council meetings about where the relationship was going. She was just as giggly as everyone else when we started dating, and a few years later, Jules was one of the most excited to find out that Brooks and I were engaged! Her family will undoubtedly be a part of our wedding and a part of our lives for years to come. I can’t imagine my time in Zeta without her!” – Emily Grassbaugh, Zeta Tau Alpha
