The week which we call Holy is one that is meant to bring us into contact with the sacred realities of the suffering, death, and resurrection of our Savior, Jesus Christ. The Paschal Triduum (The Three Days) begins with the Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday evening, proceeds into Good Friday with the Solemn Celebration of the Passion, continues into the silence of Holy Saturday, and entering into the joy of the Resurrection with the Easter Vigil and Easter Sunday. The word Paschal refers to the passover of the Lord, from death to new life. In counting the Three Days, remember that liturgical time for solemn feasts begins with sundown of the evening before the day. All are encouraged to take time out from busy schedules to gather as a parish as we prayerfully celebrate these days which lead us into repentance, grace, mercy, and joy.

For the Bishop’s Lenten Appeal, we have reached 101% of our parish goal with pledges of $392,700. Thank you for your sacrificial generosity! In particular, we thank our BLA chair, Janet Smith, and the team of people who have helped with this effort.

In Our Parish

Sacrament of Reconciliation: Come back to Christ

As we enter Holy Week, it is a time to renew our Lenten commitment to draw closer to Christ. On Tuesday, March 31st, we will have the Sacrament of

Reconciliation. Many priests will be present to hear your confession and bring you God’s mercy. Confession will renew you as you receive Christ’s forgiveness and the strengthening that comes from the grace of this sacrament. Receiving this sacrament is a most important way that we prepare to celebrate the Lord’s dying and rising in the Easter Triduum (The Three Days).

The Chrism Mass is held at the Cathedral of St. Thomas More, Arlington, on Holy Thursday, April 2nd at 10:30AM; Bishop Loverde is the principal celebrant. The priest concelebrants renew their priestly promises at this Mass and the Holy Oils (Sacred Chrism, Oil of Catechumens, and Oil of the Sick) are blessed at this Mass.

Good Friday is a day of penance to be observed as an obligation in the whole Church, and indeed, through abstinence (no meat; age 14 and older ) and fasting.

The Easter Vigil is not only one of the most beautiful liturgies in the Church, it is also the most important celebration of the entire liturgical year. The Easter Vigil consists of the blessing of the Easter fire, the Liturgy of the Word, the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation, First Eucharist), and the Liturgy of the Eucharist.

Why do Catholics distribute palms on Palm Sunday?

To the ancient Jews, palms were a symbol of triumph often used in victory celebrations. So, when Jesus made his triumphant entry into Jerusalem before his passion and death, the crowds “took palm branches and went out to meet him, and cried out: “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, (even) the king of Israel” (John 12:13). Today, we are given palms as part of the Passion (Palm) Sunday liturgy to commemorate the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem where he would give his life for us.

Divine Mercy Sunday April 12th at 3:00pm in the Church

Pamphlets containing information and guidelines for praying the Chaplet of Divine Mercy, along with information about the Novena of Chaplets, are available in the book racks and on tables throughout the church.
