The name Palash! Thinking about Palash as a name for this organization - you would be wondering, why Palash as a name? Palash as it stands is a name of a flower plant which has the heritage of having medicinal value. Palash called as Butea Monosperma in scientific terms, is a medicinal tree and its different parts are used to cure various clinical disorders. Palash is used as tonic and anthelmintic in Ayurveda. Thus, Palash reminds us of a very deep rooted historical context in medicine we have chosen Palash as the name, to have a recall of the heritage, the values and the scientific base in our cultural. Palash in the modern context is representing a vehicle, a means and a purpose for the healthcare and its benefits to be reaching from the one who blesses to the deserving individuals around. Palash is the infusion of something with holiness, spiritual redemption, divine will, or one's hope or approval for the healthcare.

The Journey! We started our journey with the mission to transform the healthcare thought innovative and state-of-the-art solutions on technology and as a vision, we wanted to be recalled by all the healthcare organizations. We are in tenth year of striving existence and we are ensuring ourselves on path we designed ourselves for. Its said that if you see, what you want to create, then you can definitely create, what you can see. We are seeing that we are indeed providing products to cater to all the stakeholders in the healthcare ecosystem. We are making them more feature rich as demanded by the expert users, and more user friendly making it easier to use and adopt. Its been our endeavor to achieve what the customers needs are and how they are getting addressed and we still keep on delivering more value incrementally.

The Focus moving forward ! Palash has a wide range of products covering various specialties which have been developed to address needs of various customers during the course of last 9 years. Palashs products address wide range of specialties covering Diabetes, IVF, Oncology, Psychiatry, Dermatology, Nephrocare, Gynaecology, Cardiology, Ophthalmology, Pediatric, Orthopedic, Orthotics and Prosthetics etc. It addresses needs of wider ranges of hospitals, clinics, chain of clinics & hospitals as providers and doctors as practitioners. The modern life, its pace, individuals aspirations and eagerness to grow has its positive and negative effects. The growing percentage of infertility is indicative of one of the ill effects apart from the chronic diseases like hypertension, diabetes etc. The need for IVF (In vitro fertilization) has frown from lesser than 1 % (1 in every 200 couples) about 15 years back to 16% (1 in every 6) currently. Assessing the huge need in the current situation, we have successfully launched a new focus on the IVF market through our niche IVF centric product offering through a new entity Palash IVF Solutions Pvt Ltd. The company has been launched on the eve of the Dussehra day and is planned to score to heights by reaching out the domestic and international markets. These products are having subscription based models to address the needs of the stakeholders by leveraging the cloud based architecture and mobile device based interfaces. The access to the very private and near-and-dear dialog of the keen to-be-father or to-be-mother will happen through a specially designed mobile app Palash IVF Connect. This is the platform to bring the community together and collaborate.

Shirish Kulkarni -Group CEO, PALASH Group of Companies

We have just finished a half of our financial year and locked our performances. Its indeed a promising journey and we have seen addition of about 40 new orders and have been on the mission to bring customer delight in this satisfying journey. The market has its own volatility and we have been focusing our energies on consistency and predictability of our and customers business. We have already achieved as lot and we see a northward path for the two quarters in the second half year. We are aiming at addition of more marque brands for Palash, which brings in a lot of credibility across the healthcare fraternity.

The Strength getting unleashed ! Palash has launched its SaaS (Software as a Service) based SWARM strategy and its yielding success providing the hospitals, clinics and practitioners a light weight solution that they were eager to have at the price point they were aspiring to have these solutions. Moving the CAPEX requirement in the form of a yearly subscription this solutions have started creating a wave in the market. Palashs strength of understanding of the domain in the healthcare space has been a differentiator from the other vendor in this market, who are providing the very feature-lean solutions which are limited in their functionality to appointment booking / registration. SWARM strategy is yielding revenues which are annual and recurring ensuring a strong cash flow for Palashs future.

The Customer Advocacy ! Next few months will see a lot of focus on Customer Relationships, Product Feature Refinement, Product Roadmap Enrichment, Iterative Design and Deliveries, Involvement of Customers in Roadmap creation etc. From Palashs point-of-view the customer is the key and their requirements are sacrosanct. Palash management is going to spend a lot of focus on the existing customers to understand their roadmaps, their pain points and putting their key needs on the product roadmaps.

Leaving the heartfelt wishes for Diwali the festival of lights

I am so excited to see Palash unleashing its potential and the market starting noticing Palash.

Can you share some insights on your personal history? I am born and brought up in an average income family from Pune and have gone through ups and downs in life both at personal and professional fronts to eventually stand where I am currently feeling really content as I look back and take a stock of things accomplished and tried my best at whatever I took up as a charter, made my own dent across, kept adding value to myself and the ecosystem wherever I belonged. I have always tried to question the status-quo and tried to improve the current state to bring out an element of transformation. I came from the background, which did not have huge avenues to experiment, and had to start earning for the family rather than doing my postgraduation. Keep trying and never get tired in the key motto in my life.

How is your educational journey? I am a Mechanical Engineer from CoEP from the 1990 batch and then continued to complete my Post Graduation in Manufacturing & Automation. I remember that in 1990 my seminar topic was AGV Automated Guided Vehicles and the project was To design and manufacturer two robots to feed jobs to a Lathe and Milling Machine. Have been a keen learner on technology have taken a path to be on the edge of Manufacturing & IT all through starting with delving with CAD, CAM, CAE & Automation to begin with and eventually graduating to master the Software Creation Process as well. Final touch has been spending time in IIM Bangalore for the Management Course, which gave a flair to me about the business side understanding and

ownerships - to own up the business operations and hence finally a touch with Consulting to be closure to the customers and its need. Have learnt languages like C, C++, C# : French, German and a bit of French as well. My motto is Synergizing Transformation an ability to connect the dots and bring a picture together - which will serve as a future roadmap for the transformation of the entities. The entity could be an individual, the individuals mind, or an organization. Having got the formal certifications like ITIL, SCRUM, PMP helped me baseline my knowledge and understanding with de-facto standards in the market. Having spent time in various types of organizations, have learnt the technique of balance between people process, tools and have been proponent of automation to raise the efficiency and effectiveness of the overall system. I believe, that learning is the only thing that is constant in me and keep me going on and on.

Tell us something about your professional journey Before joining PALASH, I have played various roles demonstrating end-to-end business ownership right from building strategy to the actual execution. The main thread in all these roles have been the element of learning and facing challenges. The attitude to challenge and change oneself, status-quo and the system around, has been the main motto during the journey. The transition from the early budding days of being a trainee engineering in the empire of Tata Consulting Engineers which involved the start of the putting the theory to the practice in the consulting environment where the formulae for the Machine Design and Strength of Materials were still fresh in mind got more and more involved into the use of computers into the design and drafting processes it gave an immense satisfaction to build a menu structure of our own to cater the then needs of the CAD draughtsman making designs faster and life earlier for them after 2 years moving to a

German Pump Manufacturer named KSB Pumps as an Engineering Officer owner of development of new Chemical and Process Pumps from designs to the pattern making, casting, machining, assembly, testing and proving the performance in the fields establishing and owning the complete engineering and development process a lot of intense engineering experience to understand the pump design and its conversion in to the actual deliveries to the customer and feedback in the form of customer complaints / site visits the inclination towards automation and use of computers to advent of CAD and CAM for the pump impeller design, generating G-code for the CNC machining, developing the programs for plotting the Pump Characteristics was immensely satisfying. Then I moved into the Engineering Research Center (ERC), in Tata Motors / Tata Technologies India Ltd. This exposed me to the various technology applications in the fields of Engineering, new Product Development, Introduction and connection with Manufacturing the complete landscape of CAD, CAM, PLM, CAE, Virtual Prototyping, and Concurrent Engineering. After spending @ 6 years and realizing that I have much more potential to exploit on the core Software Development, I switched to Parameteric Technology Corporation to master the Software Engineering principles and practices to be eventually designated as a Global Product Owner and to build the interface / bridge between their CAD (ProEngineer) and PLM (WindChilll) streams of strategy and eventually, to be performing a role of Technical Architect then realized in about 5 years that I have a bigger role to play, I switched to BMC Software India to contribute setting up of an ODC for their Identity Management BU and driving many of their strategic initiatives like streamlining and optimization of the Customer Support Metrics and Process leading to cost savings and reduction of customer critical issues by 50% Spending @ 3+ enriching years and in parallel completing my Executive MBA from IIM Bangalore and then realizing that

I will not get the customer exposure and power to control, unless I venture into Services company I switched to Geometric Ltd as a Delivery Head to own relationship and business for the key accounts for Geometric grew from the from roles of Delivery Head -> Business Head -> Business Unit Head in a span of 2 years to be reporting to then COO to head a small independent Business Unit. To top this up with a consulting and direct customer facing role - Got an opportunity to set-up a Global Practice on Manufacturing Excellence in TCS under the umbrella of Innovation and Transformation Center identified the white space, created the list of offerings, Go-To-Market strategy, reached out to the customers and stabilized the operations. Started my own Business Consulting venture to provide Business Transformation journey for SMB sector in the IT, Manufacturing, Education and Healthcare industry got the transformation map created for PALASH and here I am realizing the transformation. Tell us something about your achievements and career highlights? I remember the day, when I had a chance to demonstrate a vehicle simulation and shake hands with the great Ratan Tata in the Engineering Research Center of Tata Motors (then TELCO Tata Engineering and Locomotive Company) was a high point I was involved in the development effort for the Indica vehicle and was contributing in the dynamic multi-body analysis of the complete vehicle model this was a as a part of the virtual prototyping initiative to evaluate the vehicle performance and then benchmark it with the virtual simulations to build the correlations this was achieved through creating simulations of various maneuvers for the car to be able to predict the behavior in the conditions not predictable in reality - It felt like in to be in heaven for the young chap like me, to shake hands with Ratan Tata, the Chairman of Tata Empire. He was so much appreciative of the efforts and it was like dream come true for me

and many of us around. Another high-point was, when I got an opportunity to represent india, when my research paper on Parameteric Study of Complete Vehicle Model was selected as a best paper in india and then I was invited to presented it in the ADAMS International Users Conference in Ann Arbor then was a budding engineer from India presenting his contributions in front of @ 40 off experts in vehicle dynamics It was a wonderful feeling of achievement In Geometric, I was identified to lead the Next Generation Practices to turn them around in the tough years of recession and then to head the Manufacturing IT BU to hold the fort for something which had end-to-end ownership from hiring, GTM, Sales, staffing, operations, delivery and most importantly keeping moral of the teams ! These definitely mark highs of the system recognizing your potential and hence ability to execute. In TCS, I conceptualized a unique Digital solution based on Manufacturing Mobility, which got appreciated by the customers and is creating waves in the market. This solution gives a 360 Deg view of the Manufacturing Operations leveraging the inherent capabilities of the mobility device and empowers various roles to monitor and control the key parameters in the operations. This solution is under patenting process and makes me proud about my contributions

Can you please share some interesting experiences about your interaction with Clients or Relationships? Clients are always testing waters and checking the breadth, depth of your knowledge, your eagerness and abilities to understand them and serve their needs. One of such challenging instance was when, we were pursuing an opportunity for Voice of Customer strategy for an American Tire Manufacturer, when it came to the level of closure and the Quality Director asked me are you going to be the one, who will own this end-to-end? - Heavily loaded question and setting huge expectations eye-in-

  • PALASH Pulse, Nov 2015 5|

    In Conversation with..

eye, across the tables my immediate reaction was Yes Are you the one, who will take us through this? Are you going to I am giving this moral responsibility to you to own my pains would you be the one who would get up in the night, like me, to check, if things are going well and we are on the required path? can you assure me that, I can trust you pretty challenging proposition!A kind of funny instance was when, I was suddenly invited to a customer meeting over a phone call I was travelling and was in a remote place, barely having telephone access no briefing call, no expectation settings direct customer call, with customer expecting to talk to someone for their Quality Strategy Roadmap Creation exercise! Fortunately, I could take out the reserved arsenals from my kitty and sailed over the call to build the context, get into a dialog and got the customers to talk through their expectations smoothly and hence could virtually walk them through the approach for the road-map creation and fixing the next level meeting to present our case-studies in this space but to start, it was definitely an experience in itself! Another one from the European market for the Manufacturing Excellence Strategy this person is the manufacturing strategist for the Labeling and Packaging Material Manufacturer I was positioned as person, who would talk to him about Manufacturing Excellence his first question was what is so big deal we prepared a small pitch and he started showing interest then he called me in a plant, which is really in the corner of Germany he was busy and travelling I said yes, I will be there booked my railway tickets and reached there in the morning this railway station did not even have taxies, no ATM, no hotel near by I dragged the bag and got hold of the taxi reached the manufacturing plant he received me and as we met and started talking we spoke to about 3 hours and build a strong connect as individuals this was without any presentations Another one, from the American Locomotive engine Manufacturer

after the due diligence, as-is, to-be study, roadmap creation the Director is standing up and saying Looks like you have understood, what is expected can you now articulate the end-to-end business scenarios and replay them in a mockup environment like me? Show me, how my life will be with this system around convince me that I will be benefited take me through that experience challenging the core no hide-n-seek show it to me The customers need someone they can trust in, having enough depth and breadth of knowledge, a person having clear sense of ownership and a result oriented person to drive the desired results on-behalf of the customer.A recent experience to test your mettle is about you building a transformation strategy for an organization as an external consultant and then been asked a very nave, but loaded question would you be able to deliver it by yourself .. makes the whole of the thought process come out real and then you need to stand for the commitments that are made in the roadmap as your own. Its an exciting realization that what you could think through, is exactly what you could create in the future yourself. Who are your Role Models, whom you draw inspiration from? One of the selected dignitaries that I inspired by is Ratan Tata himself who has been commanding the huge TATA empire I have observed him during the pressures, when the indica project was not going well but he kept insisting, visiting and refining the models, building on his dream of making the cheapest car in the world and he finally did it. Feel proud to be part of the Tata Empire, which has reached the horizons of the world making Tata as a world known brand now owning Tata Corus and Jaguar Land Rover. Apple has been an amazing company in way they identifies the never existing needs for the customer, conceives the products around the same, innovate in the Customer Experience and catch the pulse of the unique and innovative needs to open up with the markets I have my

respects to late Steve Jobs, whose leadership has shaped this company to the current heights. I wonder, what would be going in minds of Steve, when he stepped down from Apple - then again for the same person to come back to Apple and making it even more successful. In him, I see a dreaming, passionate and innovating person, constantly fighting to do different and better, to understand what the world wants and bring those needs into reality. I always remember a book that I read during my school days, which left a lasting impact on me and has been always inspiring me named There was a Carver this is a real life story about a American black scientist named George Washington Carver, a genius, who fought his way through life in hardships and has many inventions on his name. The never give-up, maintain simplicity and always be down-to-earth has been the main leanings from him. I always remember following of his inspiring quote which keeps me going Start, where you are With, what you have Make, something out of it Never be satisfied

Specifically, I would like everyone to watch the last sentence in this quote never be satisfied which indicates keep innovating, keep improving, keep motivating, never give-up, there is always scope for improvement !

What keeps you going now a days? Professionally, PALASH is my sole motto now-a-days and keep me going thinking about all possible ways to move it up the value chain in the healthcare ecosystem, make the PALASH brand stronger and more valuable, build more credibility with the existing and new markets, grow the footprint locally and globally, monetize the IP to ensure there is a correct valuation for the efforts put in, build stronger relationships across the globe through partnerships, build the organization with happier and healthier employees these are some of the things that I spend my days and nights on. Personally, I would like to make some

more structured learning in the field of music and be able to make some progress in a specific direction with a vision to bring some unique offering that no one has been able to create, offer to the musical fraternity this keeps me thinking and connecting dots of how this could be realized. How do you see PALASH healthcare moving forward? I see PALASH getting recognized as a Global Product Company in healthcare space. I am having a strong conviction that PALASH has a huge potential and is sitting on a gold mine great domain knowledge, deeply rooted and long lasting customers relationships and forward looking technology landscape is the key success factors for PALASH. How do you look at challenges in this world? I am a firm believer, that Challenge is the other term for Opportunities unless the current state is challenged, we cannot see progress or transformation. Challenges provide one with the window to think differently, create something new, to think of a different way to solve the same problem / issues at hand. Keeping a positive lookout in the way to see the glass half-filled instead of half-empty is the key to turnaround any challenge that is thrown at you.

What is the message you would like to leave to the young generation? Believe in yourselves, your thoughts and your dreams thoughts are the ONLY limitation that you have in what you can create for yourselves - let even the SKY be not a limit for what you can think of yourself - I strongly believe that positivity is the key to success, lets remove all the negativity in the form of thoughts, acts, scripts, actions from our minds and we become enabled and blessed with all the opportunity in this world. Lets confront the challenges, rather than sitting on / discussing about them or complaining about them. Lets come together for the larger aim than just self-centered aims and then the things will start looking different and enable us to unleash potential each one of us have. I strongly believe in open door culture and my doors are always open for new ideas, budding talents, and innovative minds will definitely look forward to synergizing with you all. I would like to leave you thinking with the following thoughts by great philosopher Aristotle. Extending best wishes for you to pursue a journey of excellence in your own lives.

President. However, he was always willing to donate for good causes. He apparently called up Dr Verghese Kurien, the founder of Amul, and asked, Now that I have become the President of India the government is going to look after me..., so what can I do with my savings and salary? During his tenure as President he decided to give away all his wealth and life savings towards a fund for Providing Urban Amenities to Rural Areas (PURA), which was one of his pet projects. He was a simple man at heart. During one of his visits to Thiruvananthapuram, Dr Kalam invited a roadside cobbler and an owner of a small eatery as presidential guests to the Raj Bhavan of Kerala. He had known these people during his stint in Kerala. Even after assuming the highest post of the countr y he remembered his acquaintances and invited them. He led a secular life. Though he was a Muslim by religion he read and often quoted the Bhagwad Gita. He played the veena and loved the Tamil language. Though he played several roles like scientist, president, humanitarian, and teacher in his life I believe he always

r . Av u l Pa k i r DJ a i n u l a b d e e n Abdul Kalam , fondly called the 'People's President' was always the most popular of all the presidents of India. He had a m u l t i - d i m e n s i o n a l personality. He was well known for his passion for and contribution to science and technology in general, and space and nuclear science in particular. He was the one who made India truly nuclear. It was in 1974 that India carried out its first nuclear test. The next was in 1998 the Pokhran-II and through this test Dr Kalam declared to the world India's Nuclear status with a bang. Though several countries, like the USA, strongly criticized this act, it skyrocketed India's status in the world arena. Even some months ag o h i s s tand on the Neutrino project was criticized by some leftists and environmentalists. But n o o n e c a n d e n y D r K a l a m ' s s c i e n t i fi c ing enu i t y. Ca l l ed the 'Missile Man' of India, Dr K a l a m w a s a g r e a t inspiration for scores and scores of young minds. He always preferred to meet and talk to children. Even as a President he was never bothered about security or protocols. He chose to spend time with school and college students just to interact and inspire. Known for his simple living Dr Kalam was very d i f f e r en t f rom o the r presidents. He continued his frugal living even as a

wanted to be a teacher and voiced it on several occasions. He also proved it through his actions as he used every opportunity to play the role of a teacher even after assuming the president's post. Maybe he was an oracle for he always used to say he would like to be remembered as a teacher. In an interview he said, If the people remember me as a good teacher, that will be the biggest honour for me, and even when death seized him he was lecturing students at the Indian Institute of Management, Shillong. He believed, Teaching is a noble profession that shapes the character, caliber and future of an individual youth have a dream and also have a pain. The pain comes out of their dream; they want to live in a prosperous, happy and peaceful India. This type of student's environment ignites me and leads me to interact with young minds. He led by example; his whole life mirrors this. Little wonder if people spontaneously showed their love for this simple but great human being.

  • practice described as something Ato do: get on your own side, see the being behind the eyes, take in the good, etc. This practice is different: it's something to recognize. From this recognition, appropriate action will follow. Lets understand it from a story. Some years ago, a philanthropist was invited to give a keynote at a conference with the largest audience he had ever faced. It was a big step up for him. Legendary psychologists were giving the other talks, and he feared that he wouldn't measure up. He was nervous. Real nervous. He sat in the back waiting for his turn, worrying about how people would see him. He thought about how to look impressive and get approval. His mind fixed on self, self, self. He was miserable. Then the philanthropist began reading an interview with the Dalai Lama. He spoke about the happiness in wishing others well. A wave of relief and calming swept through him as he realized that the kindest thing one could do for self was to stop obsessing about self and instead try to be helpful to others. He gave his talk, and stayed focused on what could be useful to people rather than how he was coming across feeling much more relaxed and at peace-and received a standing ovation. He laughed to himself at the ironies: to get approval, stop seeking it; to take care of self, take care of others. This principle holds in everyday life, not just in conferences. If you get a sense of other people and find compassion for

    Inspiration in a Box

them, you'll feel better yourself. In a relationship, one of the best ways to get your own needs met is to take maximum reasonable responsibility for meeting the needs of the other person. Besides being benevolent-which feels good in its own right-it's your best odds strategy for getting treated better by others. This approach is the opposite of being a doormat; it puts you in a stronger position.Flip it the other way, and it is also true: kindness to self is kindness to others. As your own well-being increases, you're more able and likely to be patient, supportive, forgiving, and loving. To take care of them, you've got to take care of yourself; otherwise you start running on empty. As you grow happiness and other inner strengths inside yourself, you've got more to offer to others. Kindness to you is kindness to me; kindness to me is kindness to you. It's a genuine-and beautiful-two-way street. The kindness to others and to yourself that we are talking about here is authentic and propor t ionate, not overb lown or inappropriate. In ordinary situations, take a moment here and there to recognize that if you

open to appropriate compassion, decency, tolerance, respect, support, friendliness, or even love for others it's good for you as well. Imagine what the other person's concerns or wants might be, and do what you can-usually easily and naturally-to take them into account. Then see how this turns out for you. Probably better, than it would have been. Also see how taking care of self has good ripple effects for others. Deliberately do a small thing that feeds you-a little rest, some exercise, some time for yourself-and then notice how this affects your relationships. Notice how healthy boundaries in relationships helps prevent you from getting used up or angry and eventually needing to withdraw. In effect, you are running little experiments and letting the results really sink in. That's the important part: letting it really land inside you that we are deeply connected with each other. Helping others helps you; helping yourself helps others. Similarly, harming others harms you; harming yourself harms others.

Arambol Beach which is one of the cleanest beaches in Goa. This picture has been clicked on my last day of the Goa tour in Jan-2015. It is barely crowded unlike other beaches in Goa. It's a must visit place for peace lovers. Beach side restaurants and hotels are reasonable and you can enjoy musical jam and flee market in the evenings.

This beautiful picture of working women in paddy field was taken in Jan 2015 in the state of Assam in Northeast India. In Assam among all

the productive sectors, agriculture makes the highest contribution to its

domestic sectors, accounting for more than a third of Assam's income and employs 69% of workforce. Assam's biggest contribution to the world is Assam tea.

  • Jog One's Memory

Stress affects us all, and no more so than in the workplace. The chemicals, adrenaline and hormones which build up in our systems in response to the pressures of everyday life have no way to dissipate in our modern lives, and the effects of this can be serious enough to c au se s i gn ifican t phy s i c a l and psychological damage.Stress Awareness Day aims to promote awareness of these particularly modern challenges, and to aid individuals and organisations in changing behaviours and lifestyles which may lead to excessive stress

Tragically, millions of children all over the globe have become orphaned for many reasons: war, famine, displacement, disease or poverty. To make sure that they are not forgotten, once a year there is a special day dedicated just to them: World Orphans Day, which falls on the second Monday of each November. This special day has been put in place in order to draw attention to the plight of the world's orphans, and so on this day people are encouraged to actively participate to help raise awareness, support and funding for motherless and fatherless children worldwide. A noble cause if there ever was one!

Kindness Day isn't just about adopting all the children from your local orphanage it's about the little gestures of kindness too. Helping others can restore a sense of humanity, not to mention giving you that warm fuzzy glow inside.Kindness Day was born when a collection of humanitarian groups came together on November 13, 1997 and made a Declaration of Kindness. Likewise, on Kindness Day everyone is encouraged to make a similar

declaration. Pledging to commit just one act of kindness is no less worthwhile: hold the door open for a stranger, compliment your neighbor on their collection of garden gnomes, let your partner have control of the TV remote for the evening. However you decide to celebrate remember that the best thing about Kindness Day is that it doesn't cost a thing!

World Diabetes Day was first introduced in 1991, and founded by both the International Diabetes Federation and the World Health Organization. In reaction to the rise in cases of Diabetes worldwide, it was decided to choose a day of the year to raise awareness of Diabetes and related causes. The day chosen was the birthday of Sir Frederick Banting, a medical scientist who co-discovered Insulin and was the first person to use it on humans.

    Diabetes Myths

    &Truths

Years ago, people called it "sugar diabetes," implying that the disease was caused by eating too much of the sweet stuff. Medical experts now know that diabetes is triggered by a combination of genetic and lifestyle factors. However, being overweight which can result from indulging in high-calorie sugary foods does increase your risk for developing type 2 diabetes. If you have a history of diabetes in your family, eating a healthy meal plan and getting regular exercise are recommended to manage your weight.

The Myth: People with diabetes can't eat any sweets or chocolate. The Truth: If part of a healthy meal plan, or combined with exercise, sweets and desserts can be eaten by people with diabetes. They are no more "off limits" to people with diabetes than they are to people without diabetes.

The Myth: People with diabetes can only eat special diabetic foods. The Truth: A healthy meal plan for people with diabetes is the same as that for everyone: low in fat (especially the saturated and trans fats found in butter, full-fat dairy products and meats, and solid vegetable oils), moderate in salt and sugar, with meals based on whole-grain foods, vegetables and fruit. Diabetic and "dietetic" versions of sugar-containing foods offer no special benefit. They still raise blood glucose levels, are usually more expensive and can also have a laxative effect if they contain sugar alcohols.

The Myth: All diabetics have to take insulin injections. The Truth: Injected insulin is usually only necessary for those with Type 1 diabetes, in which the body no longer produces it own insulin. Those with Type 2 generally have plenty of insulin, but their bodies don't respond well to it. Some people with type 2 diabetes, particularly if blood-glucose levels are poorly controlled, do need diabetes pills or insulin

shots to help their bodies use glucose for energy. However, most type 2 cases can be helped without medication, by losing weight, adopting a healthier diet, increasing exercise and other lifestyle changes. (By the way, insulin cannot be taken as a pill, as the hormone would be broken down during digestion just like the protein in food. Insulin must be injected into the fat under the skin for it to get into your blood.)

The Myth: If you have diabetes, you have to stay away from starchy foods like bread, potatoes and pasta. The Truth: Whole-grain breads, cereals and pasta, brown rice and starchy vegetables such as potatoes, yams, peas and corn are part of a healthy meal plan and can be included in your meals and snacks.

These foods, high in complex carbohydrates, are also a good source of fiber, which helps keep your gastrointestinal system running smoothly. The key is portion size. Most people with diabetes should limit themselves to three or four servings of complex carbohydrates a day.

The Myth: Type 2 Diabetes only affects blood-sugar levels, decreasing your energy. The Truth: Type 2 diabetes affects many different systems and organs of the body, including the cardiovascular system, leading to stroke or heart disease; the eyes, which can result in conditions from dry eye to retinal disease (retinopathy); the nerves, causing severe damage (neuropathy) that can necessitate lower-limb amputation; the kidneys, which fail and require dialysis; and the skin, which can become prone to infections.

The Myth: Only adults can develop Type 2 Diabetes. The Truth: Diabetes is one of the common chronic diseases in school-aged children called as "juvenile diabetes," which is caused by disruption of the pancreas' ability to produce insulin. However, in recent years more and more children and teens have become overweight and so increasing numbers of young people are being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.
