- 1. PACO DE LUCATHE GUITARIST He was acquainted with flamenco since childhood. His father and his brother were his main influences. When he was 11 years old, heFrancisco Snchez Gmez, made his first public appearance onstage name Paco de Luca Radio Algeciras, and a year laterwas born in 1947, in was awarded a special prize in theAlgeciras, a city in the Jerez flamenco competition.province of Cdiz, it islocated south of Spaindirectly in front of the Rockof Gibraltar.He was youngest of five children. He adoptedthe stage name Paco de Luca in honor of hisPortuguese mother, Luca Gomes.
2. At 12, he began playing with hisbrother in a group. Some years laterthey toured the world, starting hisinternational career. By 1970, hehad gained so great a reputationthat he was asked to perform at aninternational festival organized forthe bicentennial of Beethovensdeath, celebrated at BarcelonasPalau de la Msica.Paco de Lucia became a star of the charts in 1973 with Entre dos aguas rumba that got the youngest beginning to become interested in flamenco guitar. His 2004 recording Cositas buenas, was nominated as best contemporary world music album by the Grammys and won the Latin Grammy for Best Flamenco Album.He enjoyed a fruitful collaboration with fellow NewFlamenco cantaor (one of the premier flamenco singers)Camarn de la Isla. They began a long and productiverelationship. 3. He has been criticized by purists flamenco for his foraysinto other styles, because he has included bass, drumsand saxophone and his high profle collaborations,specially with jazz musician, most notably with pianistChick Corea and fellow guitarist John McLaughlin, LarryCoryell and Al DiMeolaHe has recorded over twenty albums, among whichare: Two flamenco guitars" (1965), Twelve songsof Garca Lorca for guitar" (1965), Andalusiansongs for two guitars", Fuente y caudal" (1973 ),Almoraima" (1976), Slo quiero caminar" (1981),Siroco" (1987), Zyryab" (1990), Concierto deAranjuez" (1991), Luzia" (1998) andCositas"(2004). 4. He was one of the best flamencoteacher and a revolutionary in thegenre. His influence has changedthe conception of flamenco musicduring the last three decades.Over the course of his career, hehas made many revolutionarychanges in flamenco.He is considered the most prestigiousflamenco guitarist internationally and the mostinfluential flamenco musician of our time.Widely acclaimed for his innovative approachto the ancient art, he has won flamenco a wideaudience around the world through hiscompositions.He was the first flamenco artist toreceive Spains 2004 Premio Prncipede Asturias. The University of Cadizrecognized de Lucas musical andcultural contributions by conferringon him the title of Doctor HonorisCausa on March 23, 2007.
