Will the Royal Wedding be the Event of the Year?
The Royal wedding of
Prince William and Kate
Middleton, due to commence on
29th
April at West Minister Abbey
is almost upon us. Will it be the
event of the year or is all just a
waste of money?
The wedding has created another bank holiday, resulting in two four day weekends in a row
bringing joy to many in Britain. However employers worry that almost a month of short weeks could
be catastrophic for businesses already struggling to survive in the state of the economic climate.
The couple have invited 50 foreign heads of state and the event will bring together, all of the
Royal family and many senior government figures. It will be a great testament to British policing as
this will be the biggest security operation in a generation and is set to be the most expensive in
history. Around 5000 officers will police the streets of London, having to control a crowd of millions.
The officers will line the route to
Buckingham Palace from West Minister
Abbey during the carriage procession and
many will be on rooftops for surveillance.
Most officers will earn double pay due to
the bank holiday. It is estimated the event
could cost up to 20million.

The rehearsal took place yesterday, Wednesday 27th
April, involving up to 1000 military
personnel. The carriage precession will involve the Army, Royal Navy and the RAF. Timings were
tested and duties were practiced. The Forces personnel will lead the fleet back to Buckingham
Palace after the service. When the couple leave West Minister Abbey as man and wife, two groups
of 12 of the military will line their route as they make their way in a horse drawn carriage. With an
estimated 2 billion people expected to watch their big day, there is no room for error. The Queen is
head of state of 16 Common Wealth countries and the United States is just one of the nations in
particular that has been very keen on sending presenters to the streets of London to capture this
piece of history.
The carriage precession is set to proceed along The Mall, Horse Guards Road, Horse Guards
Parade, through Horse Guards Arch, along Whitehall, along the south side of Parliament Square and
into Broad Sanctuary. There will be five horse-drawn carriages and it has been announced the couple
will travel in a 1902 State Landau. However in the event
of rain, William and Kate will leave in The Glass Coach.
The fourth carriage, a Semi-State Landau will carry
Queen Elizabeth II and The Duke of Edinburgh.
Some believe this will be the day the country is
united. Thousands of Union Jack flags line The Mall in
central London in preparation and Regents Street is just
one of the many roads showing national pride.
Everywhere we go there are tea towels, mugs, union
jack accessories and the list continues of all of the
memorabilia available. Where ever we look, there are
shops full of prints ofPrince William and Kate Middletons faces. It has been predicted that on the
day of the wedding, 200 million will be spent on mementos for this occasion. However buying this

merchandise is not a new phenomenon as businesses have cottoned on to this money making
scheme for decades.
When asking people in the streets of London their opinion on the Royal Wedding, I got a
very mixed response. One lady, Jenny Clark,23 said, I think the hype for the wedding has just been
too much and we are all starting to hate hearing about it, I just want it to be over with. I found this
was the case for many of the younger generation whereas others seemed much more excited about
the whole event. I think the Royal Wedding is a great thing for our country, its an occasion that will
make us all be proud to be British. Seeing all of the memorabilia shows our immense support for
William and Kate, it unites us all together and I hope all of the best for them, Gary Whitehall, 59.
Aggie Loudwater, a shop worker from the bakery Greggs in Rickmansworth, a small town on
the outskirts of London, said, The royal wedding has given our shop such a good vibe. We are selling
all kinds of limited edition treats which are so popular with our customers. It has brought our local
shop and lots of others plenty of success because of the excuse of extra advertising. Greggs the
company, are promoting 5 online parties where goody bags and vouchers will be given out. If a
customer wishes to attend, they must like our page on Facebook and become a follower to get all
of the information. I think the wedding will help so many struggling businesses because of all of the
money that can be made from memorabilia alone.
Street parties are expected all over the UK which is a great way of boosting sociability for a
local community. For many of us its an excuse of a party as part of the tradition. 5500 formal road
closures have been arranged (825 in London alone) were these events can be held, traffic-free. It has
been predicted this figure will at least double on the day for informal street parties. Since 1919,
when these community gatherings were invented, it is the first national occasion that isnt taking
place in the summer which has come to the surprise of many.

It seems everyone has a very different opinion on the Royal Wedding. So many people do
not agree with the monarchy as a whole, therefore the wedding seems a great waste of money.
However countries from all over the world are predicted to tune in to watch this piece of history
whether they believe in British traditions or not. We will have to see what the day brings us and
even if we have a negative view on the event, take it as a positive as an extra day off work!
