Purpose• This presentation shows a Lighthouse example of high school STEM education at

The Raisbeck Aviation High School (RAHS)• A public/private partnership supporting construction and operation of a public

high school with aviation as a STEM theme– Funding was a joint project of the Highline School District, the Seattle Port Authority, &

several industry partners– Naming rights went to James & Sherry Raisbeck (Raisbeck Engineering)– The education is academic and lab (project-based)– Industry participates extensively with mentoring, advisement, project adjudication, and

internships– Located in a “competitive” school district; attracts students from 22 school districts

• $43M funding included commitment to serve as Lighthouse example; objective is to stimulate similar activities throughout the nation

• Intention: Lighthouse concept applied to other locations, considering local political environment, local industry, potential government partners– Theme may be based on local industry: aviation, automobiles, chemistry, etc– Raisbeck Aviation High School contains Lighthouse Workshop facility dedicated to hosting

industry/educator/government teams from around the nation

Definitions• Outreach: Institutional approach to inform, inspire, and attract

• “Downreach” reflects specifically targeted outreach to the supply segment of the education pipeline– Industry to post-secondary & K-12 education i.e. Boeing, FAA, & AlaskaAir

presence at Raisbeck Aviation High School (RAHS)

– University to high schools i.e. numerous examples in this room

– High schools to middle/elementary i.e. RAHS robotics teams to local schools

• “Upreach” reflects specifically targeted outreach from the high school to universities and industry: i.e. RAHS & Purdue, UND, ERAU

• STEM: Science Technology Engineering & Math

• STEAM: Science Technology Engineering Arts & Math

• Lighthouse: A best practice example of STEM education application that other communities can explore and emulate
