excellence, love learning, develop their passions and reach their potential

Dear Parents Tēnā koutou, kia ora koutou katoa In amongst the O’Mathlon, Ukulele Jam, EPRO8 Challenge and the preparation for tomorrow’s Sth Taieri Cross Country, students have been very busy preparing and presenting their poems and speeches ahead of the 2017 Outram School Speech Night. An Invitation Outram School Speech Night 2017

A warm invitation is extended to all parents, members of our extended school family and residents of Outram to the 2017 Outram School Speech Night.

This year the students have prepared speeches to entertain. Venue: Outram School Hall Date: Tuesday 22 August Time: 6.30 pm Programme: Junior Poetry Recitals Year 4 One Minute Speeches Year 5 / 6 Speeches Year 7 / 8 Speeches

Judging from the laughter coming from Room 5 during the presentation of their speeches in class, I am picking we will all have a great night. Best wishes to all speakers. The Sth Taieri Cross Country is scheduled for tomorrow and is the same course as the one used for the school cross country. All families are invited to join us for the 12.00 pm start. Daffodil Competition – Spring Flower Show Well hopefully everyone’s daffodils are growing well. There has been no lack of water over the last couple of months, so by now they all should be starting to pop up. Remember though do not let them dry out too much. A reminder that they all should be planted in a pot and on the Thursday 14 September bring them into school with your name, school year and age on the pot, if you are taping your name on make sure it is securely taped to the pot. I will then take them around to the flower show. The actual Flower Show is on Friday 15 September from 2pm- 6pm so make sure you go around and have a look. I would think you could collect your daffodil up from the show around 6pm if you are wanting to keep it and plant it in your garden, remember these multiply very easily and next year you should have more to brighten up your garden. Your support is very much appreciated. Kindly sponsored by Donna Tisdall – Southern Wide Real Estate & Maungatua Church Flower Show

Our EPRO8 boys at the finals competition

Room 4 have been loving poetry this year so much that some children have begun writing their own poems. Charlee Eaton wrote a poem about stars and Mrs Paterson sent it to Judi Billcliff who is a published New Zealand poet. Judi’s poetry company is called Rainbow Poetry. Here is Charlee’s poem and Judi’s reply. Stars Stars stars I saw Stars zipping and zapping through the night light. But then I began to look up again and I saw a shooting star zipping zapping through the moonlight By Charlee Eaton Hi Charlee, WOW, what a cool poem you've been writing. I could just imagine those shooting stars zip zapping through the moonlight in the sky. Thank you so much for sharing it with me. love Judi B

Rockin’ At Ukulele Jam

On Wednesday, Room 7 jumped into cars, full of excitement and drove to Tahuna Intermediate to attend Ukulele Jam 2017. At first we got our ukuleles and took a seat. Even getting a seat was pretty tricky as we were trying to fit in with 492 other students! When we looked around it was like a sea of colours - children and ukuleles. On the stage there was a big band - drums, electric, acoustic and bass guitars and a keyboard. Kanisha was feeling nervous, Flynn was really excited and we all couldn’t wait for it to start. The first song we played was ‘Utaina’. When everyone started playing together it sounded like a shock wave of sound. We were all pretty surprised at how loud it was. Brodie was feeling really alive with all the sound. We had to play a variety of songs, including ‘Budapest’, ‘Proud Mary’ and ‘The Cup Song’. During ‘Proud Mary’ Jakob and Mitchell were selected to go up to the front and show off their picking skills - they did such an amazing job! During ‘Amawole’ Mrs Jackson and Emilee got the chance to play some African drums - Emilee thought it was awesome and fun. When we played ‘Le Aute’ 6 students were selected to play some Samoan drums and Shelby was very lucky to be one of the chosen students. Shelby was also very lucky as she got to go up on stage during ‘The Cup Song’. We all had to persevere to get through all the songs - even when we didn’t know all the chords. When we went out to the playground at morning tea time the jungle gym sounded like a rainforest full of monkeys! After morning tea we saw some funny pictures of the teachers when they were little. We had to try and guess which one was our teacher - not many people guessed Mrs Jackson’s picture! Then the teachers got up and sang ‘Photograph’ by Ed Sheeran. Some special guests came to Ukulele Jam - Anna Grimaldi, who won a gold medal at the Rio Paralympics, Callum and P from The Hits radio station and Olivia from the Steel netball team. When we started playing ‘Sweet Child of Mine’ we all sang so loudly it sounded like a bomb going off! We thought we might lift the roof off the hall! At the end of the jam we were all sad that our fun experience was over.

Berwick Community Pool AGM

Thursday 17 August at 7.30pm

at Nick Moores

115 Waipori Falls Road

The Berwick Community Pool has been run by a Trust since 1997 and now has two key committee members shifting from the district, so we need more people to help keep this community asset going. The work isn't onerous, approx 4-5 meetings a year, one or two working bees and doing a week of pool duty each season. Please consider coming on our committee to keep the pool in the district for us all to enjoy.

Any questions please ring Vivienne Stewart on 4862 605
