Welcome...Welcome...The Summer 2010/11 season sees Outdoor Agencies settled into our new warehouse

and offices at Regents Park NSW. Everyday sees a renewed effort to increase

efficiencies and upgrade our service delivery to you, our customers.

The colourful and exciting accessory brand Light My Fire continues to produce

fantastic new product and for this season has updated the super successful Firesteel

which is now the Firesteel 2.0 Scout and Firesteel 2.0 Army. If you havent got

these products on your counter, talk to your representative to hear the success stories

and to discuss how this great product can add to your business too.

An Optimus cult classic stove has re-appeared in our offering. The Svea is a classic

compact and lightweight stove, is reliable and will perform in adverse conditions,

even to extremely high altitudes. The Optimus gas stove continue to be very popular

due to their lightweight high performance.

The worlds leading water treatment company Katadyn has released the My Bottle, an

innovative solution to treating water on the go. The My Bottle purifier is constructed

in a lightweight water bottle configuration which will remove bacteria, viruses and

protozoa from the water, all without the use of chemicals, or requiring batteries.

Helping to celebrate 35 years of pioneering lighting technology, Princeton Tec have

release the fantastic Byte as an addition to the ever popular family including the Fuel

and Remix torches.

Osprey continue to innovate and retain their position as the number one pack

company in the world. This season they have released the 24/Seven series; a new

range of active everyday urban day packs ranging in capacity from 12 to 34 litres. The

Farpoint has joined the highly successful travel offering from Osprey and is a capable

hybrid travel pack tipping the scales at just under 2kg.

WHYFILTER?A gushing mountain brook usually looks extremely refreshing. However, its water quality often leaves a lot to be desired. Even clear brooks and lakes can be loaded with pathogens. The general rule is: if you take water from nature and dont want to depend on expensive mineral water from PET bottles, you should never set off without water fi lters. Pathogens are divided into 3 microorganisms:

Protozoa (1 15 Micron) e.g. amoebae, giardia, lamblia, cryptosporidia. Protozoa are animal single-celled organisms and get into drinking water via animal and human faeces. Protozoa are highly resistant to chemical disinfectants, but thanks to their size can be easily fi ltered.

Bacteria (0,2 5 Micron) e.g. E-coli, salmonella, cholera. Bacteria are single-cell organisms that propagate rapidly in water. Not all bacteria are a healthrisk. If they are mixed together with human and animal faeces in drinking water, however, it becomes dangerous. A good water fi lter fi lters bacteria from water with no diffi culties.

Viruses (~0,02 0,2 Micron) e.g. Hepatitis A, Norwalk virus, Polio virus. Viruses can only propagate in living cells since they do not possess their own metabolism. Their minimum size makes it diffi cult to fi lter them from water mechanically, and so fi lters with a pore size of < 0.02 microns are needed. However, viruses are sensitive to heat and chemical disinfectants. Usually bound to particles in cloudy water, they can also be removed to a large extent with fi lter pores up to 0.2 microns.

MICROFILTER OR MICROPUR?The decision initially depends on the type of water source. Is the water cloudy or clear? Do viruses as well as bacteria have to be eliminated? Viruses get into water mainly via humans and appear primarily near populated areas, where wastewater gets into the drinking water. Is the water loaded with chemicals? How much drinking water is needed and how rapidly?

CERAMIC OR FIBREGLASS?Ceramic microfi lters have a micro-porous layer impregnated with silver, which prevents bacteria growth during prolonged periods when not in use. The pore size of the ceramic is 0.2 microns (bacteria are between 0.2 and 5 microns).Fibreglass microfi lters form a depth fi lter within two supporting layers with a pore size of 0.3 microns. Here the bacteria and protozoa are trapped mechanically.
