Scott’s Corner Introduction May has always been one of my

favorite months. The weather can’t be beat and we get to pay tribute to our mothers and our nurses.

Mothers & Nurses Tenneva Jordan wisely said, “A

mother is a person who seeing there are only four pieces of pie for five people, promptly announces she never did care for pie.”

Victor Hugo wrote: “She broke the bread into two fragments and gave them to her children, who ate with eagerness. ‘She hath kept none for herself,’ grumbled the sergeant. ‘Because she is not hungry,’ said a soldier. ‘No,’ said the sergeant, ‘because she is a mother.’”

In the world of senior living, in addition to celebrating mothers, we also celebrate our nurses during the month of May. As we reflect on our mothers and nurses, it’s impossible to miss the many common characteristics that they share. Good mothers and nurses are compassionate. In their compassion they show sympathy and a strong desire to alleviate suffering. All good mothers and nurses will be challenged at times even when they know that the care or medicine they are recommending is in our best

interest. With compassion they “nudge” us in the right direction and make sure we receive the care we need. Good mothers and nurses are selfless. Whether it’s staying up in the middle of the night to soothe or reassure or working tirelessly until we are safely resting, they put our needs ahead of their own.

At Belmont Village of San Jose, we are fortunate to be surrounded by so many good mothers and nurses. Please join me this month in honoring and expressing appreciation to the mothers and nurses in our lives.

Announcements Due to her dedication to

innovative programming and quality care for seniors with dementia, our Memory Program Coordinator Nancy Bess has been recognized and selected to participate in the 2013 Memory Bridge Training Retreat. Scott’s Corner continued on page 6.

He enjoys being with the residents and listening to all their stories. Zach likes to relax, watch football and baseball, and hang out with his friends.
