Children in the ServiceIt is a delight and a privilege to have children in theservice. Children as much as adults are members ofGod’s family and Jesus welcomes litle children toHim.

Tere is a Sunday School for children during thesermon. Te children leave at the beginning of thesermon and return to church before the Service ofthe Sacrament.

Please do not worry if your child will not sit stillor quietly throughout the service. Most young chil-dren won’t manage that! Tere is plenty of space atthe back of the room. If you do need to take a childoutside, the smaller room is available for that pur-pose.

Holy CommunionWe believe that in the Lord’s Supper, we eat anddrink the true body and blood of Jesus in and withthe bread and the wine, according to Jesus’ ownwords. We also believe that those who participate inHoly Communion in a particular congregationshould be in agreement in the confession of the faith.

Terefore, we ask that only those who are instruc-ted in the Lutheran Confessions and are under ourpastor’s spiritual care come forward to receive theLord’s Supper.

If you are visiting us and wish to receive theLord’s Supper, please speak to the pastor before theservice. Everyone is welcome to come forward to re-ceive a blessing.

Our teaching on this mater is explained in moredetail in the litle leafet, ‘Why ClosedCommunion?’, which is available at the back of thechurch.

The ReadingsFaith Trusts in Christ for Life EternalWhen the beggar Lazarus died, he was carried by theangels to Abraham’s bosom. For he was truly Abra-ham’s seed. Like Abraham, he believed in the Lord,and the Lord “counted it to him as righteousness”(Gen. 15:6). Te name Lazarus means “God is myhelp”. Te unnamed rich man, on the other hand, didnot love and trust in God. For he evidently caredlitle for the beggar at his gate. And “he who does notlove his brother whom he has seen cannot love Godwhom he has not seen” (1 John 4:20). He who lovedand trusted in possessions and prestige died and wasin torments in Hades (Luke 16:19–31). Repentanceand faith are worked only through Moses and theprophets—that is, the Word of God, for it points us toChrist. Only through His death and resurrection arewe brought the comfort of life everlasting.

Our churches teach that this faith is bound tobring forth good fruit. It is necessary to do goodworks commanded by God, because of God’s will.We should not rely on those works to merit justifca-tion before God. Te forgiveness of sins and justifca-tion is received through faith. Te voice of Christ test-ifes, “So you also, when you have done all that youwere commanded, say, ‘We are unworthy servants;we have only done what was our duty’ ” (Luke 17:10).Te Fathers teach the same thing. Ambrose says, “Itis ordained of God that he who believes in Christ issaved, freely receiving forgiveness of sins, withoutworks, through faith alone.”

Liturgical Titbits: Liturgical Orientation

One of the noticeable things about the liturgist ina Lutheran service is the fact that he doesn’t standstill. One moment, he’s facing the congregation,another he’s got his back turned on them. What’sthat all about?

Te clue is in the fact that the liturgist has adual role in the service. Sometimes he addressesGod with, or on behalf of, the congregation. Atother times, he addresses the congregation on be-half of God.

Whenever he speaks with or on behalf of thecongregation (invocation, confession, Psalms,hymns, prayers), the liturgist faces the same wayas the congregation: towards the altar (whichsymbolises God’s presence). And whenever hespeaks on behalf of God (absolution, salutation,readings, sermon, blessing), he faces the congreg-ation being addressed.

Te one exception is the Service of the Sacrament,when the liturgist does both at once. Tere is an ex-planation for this—but it’s somewhat debatable, sowe’ll leave that to another time.
