• • •NEW Entry Canopy for Church/Open VestibuleWe are planning to build a covered entrance area for the Church which will protect the wooden entrance doors from the West sun that causes much wear on the doors. This will provide for a more aesthetically appealing entrance to the Church building. You may see the plans in the Narthex. Our parish family celebrates the 60th Anni-versary of its founding in April 2016. This will be wonderful addition for our beautiful church as we celebrate our 60th Anniversary.

The estimated cost of this will be around $140,000. If you want, you have an opportunity to make a memorial donation of $5000 and above in memory of a loved one who has passed away or in honor of a loved one. A plaque will be placed in the new entrance to permanently honor their memory. Those of you who want to make a year-end donation please make it to the Building Fund.

• • •Prayer Ministry Teams are available after weekend Mass in the Holy Family Chapel to pray for your personal Intentions. Please enter through the entrance across the Saint Joseph Room.

Spiritual direction vs. adviceWhat is spiritual direction? How does it differ from counseling and sim-ply asking for religious advice?

In spiritual direction, a person is guided in a process of reflection, self-dis-covery, and recognition of God’s presence in human experience; the primary focus is on this individual’s relationship with God. Thus, in one sense, it is the Lord himself who is the “director” in all spiritual direction.

In counseling, a person is also guided in a process of reflection and self-discovery; but the primary focus is on human growth and development. Coun-seling does not presuppose a person’s faith or relationship with God; spiritual direction cannot be complete without it.

Both spiritual direction and counseling share the same expectations of openness and honesty in the process; they share the same standards of con-fidentiality and professional conduct. Moreover, spiritual direction is similar to counseling in its aim toward human growth and development; but it further aims toward holiness and “toward ever more intimate union with Christ” (Cat-echism of the Catholic Church 2014). That union is twofold: a personal rela-tionship with Christ and one with Christ’s Church. “This union is called ‘mysti-cal’ because it participates in the mystery of Christ through the sacraments” (CCC 2014). “All Christians in any state or walk of life are called to the fullness of Christian life and to the perfection of charity. All are called to holiness: Be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect” (CCC 2013).

Growing in Faith

GOOD NEWS!May 1, 2016SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER (C)Acts 15:1-2, 22-29 / Rv 21:10-14, 22-23 / Jn 14:23-29

For many Catholics, Vatican Council II was a watershed moment in Church history. I remember the nuns in our school turning on the radio to listen to reports. They shared what Pope St. John XXIII said at the start of the council. The media still fol-low large Church events, but it’s easy to forget that Church leaders have been gathering to talk about the issues of the day since the first century.

In the first reading, we hear (in fairly abbrevi-ated form) about the Council of Jerusalem. The apostles and other leaders of the Church came together to discuss whether Gentiles had to be cir-cumcised (a tenet of Jewish Law) before they were baptized. There were legitimate claims on both sides. Remarkably, the leaders prayed, talked, and prayed some more. They spoke from their experi-ence and their faith. They assumed that all the as-sembled were people of faith, and so they wrestled together to find the answer most in keeping with the commands of Jesus.

In the end, when they decided to admit Gentiles without circumcising them, the whole community recognized that the Holy Spirit was at work, and the letter sent to the various churches began, “It is the decision of the Holy Spirit and of us…” The Coun-cil of Jerusalem gives us a model for resolving our differences: pray, dialogue, and pray some more. This week, read all of Acts 15 to see what happens when we trust the Spirit to guide us rightly: argu-ments fall silent, and we find delight, strength, and peace (see 15:12, 31-32; John 14:27).

Ascension Thursday or Sunday? The Feast of the Ascension remains a Holy Day of Obligation throughout the United States The day on which it is celebrated, however, varies. The 40th day after Easter Sunday is always a Thursday, and the feast has traditionally been celebrated on that Thursday. However, because attendance at Ascension Thursday Masses had been falling for years, the bishops of the United States, in accor-dance with canon law, petitioned the Vatican to al-low the celebration to be transferred to the follow-ing Sunday. The Vatican agreed.

Ascension Day - May 8, 2016 Holy Day of Obligation665 Christ›s Ascension marks the definitive entrance of Jesus› humanity into God›s heavenly  domain,  whence  he  will  come again (cf. Acts 1:11); this humanity in the mean-time hides him from the eyes of men (cf. Col 3:3).666 Jesus Christ,  the head of  the Church, precedes us into the Father›s glorious kingdom  so  that  we,  the members  of  his Body, may live in the hope of one day being with him for ever.667  Jesus  Christ,  having  entered  the sanctuary  of  heaven  once  and  for  all, intercedes constantly for us as the mediator who assures us of the permanent outpouring of the Holy Spirit.(The Catechism of the Catholic Church)

• • •Divorced and Re-married?If you are divorced and remarried outside of the Catho-lic Church without a Decree of Invalidity, or if you are married outside of the Catholic Church, you may not partake of the Sacraments, including the reception of Holy Communion. Until it is shown otherwise through the ministry of the Tribunal, no person is free to enter into another marriage without the appearance or oc-casion of serious sin. A divorce alone would not affect, or hinder in any way, your participation in the Catholic Church. A divorced Catholic is free to receive the sac-raments. However, if you are divorced and have remar-ried, or if you are divorced and in a new relationship, or if you are living with someone without a Decree of Invalidity (and your former spouse is still living) you may not partake of the sacraments, including the reception of Holy Communion.Consider seeking a Decree of Invalidity which will en-able you to return to a full participation in the sacra-mental life of the Church. For more information contact Deacon Larry Bills at the Church office at 696-1253.

INTERFAITH MINISTRIES, INC. - NEWSNew Program: Equipment ConnectionRecognizing an unmet need for many in our city, Interfaith Ministries is unveiling a new program to make donated durable medical equipment available to those who need it. “Equipment Connection” is an opportunity to address two dilemmas that many families face”, says Kris Gossom, Executive Director of Interfaith Ministries. If you or your family have durable medical equipment they no longer need and would like to dispose of it, Interfaith Ministries would like to help you. Larger equipment including wheelchairs, hospital beds (without mattresses), power mobility chairs, Hoyer lifts and walkers are also needed, along with smaller items such as canes and crutches. The equipment will be inspected, cleaned and prepared for distribution.Healthline Medical Equipment, Inc. is partnering with Interfaith Ministries and will assist with making sure all equipment in the program is ready for use when needed.Individuals needing equipment are asked to contact Interfaith Ministries at 940-322-1365 for program guidelines and information. For those wanting to donate items to Equipment Connection, contact Interfaith Min-istries or drop the items by their office Monday through Friday between 9am and 3pm.Critical Needs this Month:
