MUSIC@ UH-MAUI MUSIC FACULTY AND LECTURERS e University of Hawai‘i Maui College offers a wide variety of music classes, especially in the areas of Hawaiian, world, popular and rock music. Our faculty also provide instruction in piano, guitar, ‘ukulele, voice, theory, composition, music technology and recording, and private instruction by arrangement. Courses taught by the music faculty also play an important role in the Academic Subject Certificate in Hawaiian Music offered by the Institute of Hawaiian Music (IHM). Dr. Keola Donaghy holds a B.A. in Hawaiian Studies and M.A. in Hawaiian Language and Literature from the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo, and a Ph.D. in Music from the University of Otago in Aotearoa (New Zealand). He serves on the boards of the Hawai‘i Academy of Recording Arts and PBS Hawai‘i. He is a prolific haku mele (composer of Hawaiian poetry), whose compositions have been recorded by many prominent Hawai‘i artists. Keola teaches Hawaiian, pop, rock, and world music, music theory and applied music at UH Maui College. [email protected] Karyn Sarring has performed and worked with many diverse talents for over 35 years. She’s been adjunct professor/ lecturer, has conducted workshops at various colleges, held self-produced workshops and conferences, worked with many organizations (Chicago, Nashville, LA, NYC, Maui) hosted cable and radio shows, writer, columnist and performed in many musical genres. She is known for her very personal approach, pinpointing needs, inspiring and discovering a student’s true creativity. [email protected] Joel Katz been performing professionally on Maui for 25 years. Joel operates the award- winning Seaside Recording Studio and is music director of the popular Maui band “Jimmy Mac and the Kool Katz”. He is also a skilled practitioner of the Hawaiian steel guitar, and is passionate about carrying on the tradition of this instrument and style. Joel teaches guitar, ‘ukulele, steel guitar, recording, and audio technology classes at UHMC. She is a past grant-recipient of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, Inc. and the co- founder of the Nada Brahma Foundation, whose projects include documenting rituals, religion and music in Mexico, Guatemala, the Hopi reservation, Ghana, and Indonesia. She is a co-author of the textbook Music Appreciation. She teaches world music and music literature at UH Maui College. Damira Feldman, a Russian-born pianist, recently made Maui her new home. Before moving to the island, she served as faculty-artist and professor of piano and music theory at the Visual and Performing Arts Academy, Broward College, FL. Ms. Feldman graduated with Honors from the Kazan State Conservatory of Music with a degree as “Soloist and Leader of an Orchestra, Piano Teacher and Chamber Orchestra Musician”. Ms. Feldman began her career as a piano teacher at the Kazan Academy, while also performing as a piano soloist with the Kazan Symphony Orchestra. Love to sing, play an instrument, slam poetry, do magic tricks, stand-up comedy, karaoke, act, dance – hula? Come perform (or just watch!) This popular open mic event for the last three years will be part of the International Day on campus in November. All UHMC students, staff and faculty are invited along with the whole community of Maui. All talents, All ages. Free admission and free food. This is a family event.
