Our Amazing Brain

A presentation by Dana Philipsien

Biology 120

Professor Abdullah

The brain is made of nervous tissue which is composed of cells called neurons.

This system produces electrical impulses which allow information to be sent from the brain to the rest of the body.

The brain is found in the cephalic region of the body. Cephalic region is the entire head.

The brain is located in the cranial cavity which is a dorsal cavity.

Our brain uses 20% of the oxygen and blood in our body.

Our brain can live for 4 to 6 minutes without oxygen and anything more will result in permanent brain damage.

An average human brain weighs 3lbs. The cerebrum is the largest part of the

brain and is 85% of the brains weight. The cerebrum processes thought,

language, movement, and sensory information.

The cerebrum (which is the wrinkled part) is divided into 4 regions or lobes. The regions are the frontal lobe, occipital lobe, parietal lobe and temporal lobe.

A mind is a terrible thing to waste

Your brain can generate enough energy to turn on a light bulb which is about 10-23 watts.

Our brain cells reach maximum size at age six. Every time we remember something, we make a new neuron connection to the brain. The cerebellum, which is the second smaller division of the brain, coordinates

balance and movement. The human brain is so delicate it can be cut with a butter knife!
