Douglas Bentham Douglas Bentham was born in Rosetown, Saskatchewan in 1947. He studied Fine

Arts at the University of Saskatchewan from 1964-68 and attended artists workshops at Emma Lake in 1969. He received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1969 and a Master of Fine Arts degree in 1989 from the University of Saskatchewan. He has sculpted since 1968 and was an assistant of Antony Caro in 1977. Douglas Bentham has lived in Dundurn, Saskatchewan since 1969.

About the Artist’s Work: Bentham is a sculptor whose interests lie in structure, materials, forms and

nature. He welds non-objective constructions out of factory and weathered sections of steel. The stiff, static inherent qualities of steel are juxtaposed with the rhythm and lightness of the lines he creates using positive and negative shapes. His sculptures directly relate to their environment; he does not use pedestals and he lets the weather rust the steel. In the past three years he has been concentrating on the use of brass, bronze and copper as a means of expanding his vocabulary. Steel has a tendency to absorb and hold light; brass has the unique ability to absorb light and give it back - forever changing under different conditions.

Robert Murray Robert Murray was born in Vancouver in 1936. He studied at the School of Art in

Saskatoon, participated in the artist's workshops at Emma Lake, and at the Institut Allende, in San Miguel, Mexico. In 1960 he moved to New York City and taught at Hunter College from 1965-69; since 1971 he has taught at the School of Visual Arts in New York. He was Artist-in-Residence at Yale University, the University of Oklahoma, and at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in Halifax. Robert Murray currently lives and works in New York.

About the Artist’s Work: "Robert Murray's sculpture has been characterized as free-standing abstract

work, often formed from a single piece of metal plate that is finished with one colour overall. It stands in direct contrast to the work of other sculptors who utilize found objects and maintain an interest in composition and cubist assemblage. Many are large outdoor pieces which have been purchased or commissioned for public spaces. Looking back over his work of the past three decades, it is also possible to appreciate the diversity of ideas, the use of many different materials, the construction techniques and the variety of the work as it relates to common themes." (Martha Henry, New England Centre for Contemporary Art, 1990)

John Nugent John Nugent was born in 1921 in Montreal. He lives and works in Lumsden,

Saskatchewan and has been producing sculptures for over forty years. Although he attended art school at the Benedictine St. John’s University in Collegeville, Minnesota, and was for a time apprenticed to a silversmith, he is largely self-taught in the practical application of his craft.

About the Artist’s Work: “Massive, yet open and airy, these pieces are eccentric assemblages

made from pipes, old agricultural machinery and other steel fragments, and they are most at home in an outdoor setting. Great pieces of metal are used, just as any assemblage artist might employ odd pieces of wood, cloth or paper, giving each a new identity. Despite the artist’s disinterest in having anyone identify an agricultural theme as such, it is there, and underscores the uncompromising character of the work as a whole.” (Grace Inglis, Hamilton Spectator, 1985)
