About the Simulator…Special needs infants require specific, yet gentle, care which includes the performance of vital medical procedures. This newborn-size infant allows health care facilities and medical staff to teach special procedures and develop a nursing care plan for special needs infants. The simulator was developed for a wide range of educational training, including beginning nursing students. Medical devices that can be used include: tracheostomy tube and suction catheter, gastrostomy tube, nasogastric tube, and ure-thral catheter. Procedures that can be practiced include: • Tracheostomy care (lavage and suctioning) • Gastrostomy care (lavage and gavage) • Nasogastric care (placement, lavage, gavage, and suctioning) • Urethra catheterization (insertion, placement, and care) • Colostomy stomas (basic care purposes only)Includes carry bag. Tracheostomy tube, G-tube, and NG-tube are not included. Three-year warranty.

General Instructions for Use

A. Placing the NG-Tube 1. The trainer is designed to accept a standard 8FR or smaller nasogastric feeding tube.

2. Be sure the NG stomach bag is securely connected to the tubing that comes from the neck (Figure 1). The stomach bag may then be attached to the Velcro® on the body wall. (Allow for the rotation of the luer fitting when connecting the bag to the tube. Do not twist or kink the neck tubing.)

C. Placing the Urinary Catheter

1. The trainer is designed for use with a standard 8 French latex or silicone intermittent catheter only. The silicone catheter may be easier to use, as it is somewhat stiffer. Do NOT use a Foley catheter. 2. To fill the bladder tube, remove the luer cap and carefully inject water using the squirt bottle provided (Figure 3). Recap the bladder tube tightly until ready to begin actual training. 3. Prop the baby in a semi-reclining position with a diaper or paper towel underneath to catch any leakage that may occur. 4. Lubricate the catheter with water-based lubricant, taking care not to block the drain holes. 5. Loosen the luer cap when ready to begin; water will not flow when the tube is tightly capped. 6. Gently and slowly insert the catheter. Squeezing and releasing the tubing with your thumb and finger as you do so may help to start the flow. Stop insertion as soon as flow begins, and leave the catheter in place until it stops completely. 7. Always remove the catheter immediately after training. Leaving the catheter in place for extended periods, especially it if is the latex type, may permanently damage both the catheter and the trainer. 8. When storing the trainer, allow the bladder tube to air dry by removing the luer cap.

NOTE: The soft material of the trainer’s catheter valve may sometimes fail to return to its fully closed position after catheterization, resulting in some leakage if the bladder tube is refilled immediately. If so, you may wish to begin catheter insertion before opening the luer cap. If leakage persists, remove the bladder tube cap and insert the catheter into the tube from the top. Gently tap the tip against the valve several times.

3. Always lubricate the nasal passage before training, by squirting a little water into the nose with the wash bottle provided. 4. Slowly and carefully feed the tube into either nostril, following the manufacturer’s instructions. 5. Do not use formula or other real food products during training; use water only. 6. When training is complete, remove and clear the NG tube. Disconnect the stomach bag, remove from the body, and drain as much water as possible. When storing the baby between training sessions, the bag should be left disconnected to allow any residual moisture to dry.B. Placing the G-Tube 1. The trainer is designed to accept only a 14 French gastrostomy tube. 2. Be sure the gastrostomy stomach bag is securely attached to the interior body wall, and that the two holes line up (Figure 2). 3. Lubricate the G-tube with a water-based lubricant before use. 4. Insert and inflate the tube, following the manufacturer’s instructions. 5. Do not use formula or real food products; use water only. 6. At the completion of training, remove the stomach bag and drain as much of the water as possible. Allow to air dry before storage.
