Edit OpenStreetMap Data Offline by JOSM

JOSM stands for "Java OpenStreetMap Editor".

It's an cross-platform editor for OpenStreetMap, just like the Potlatch online editor, but with a

more complicated interface and you can use it to edit map information even if you are not

connected to the network.

Google JOSM and open "josm.openstreetmap.de/"

Choose a proper installer that fits your computer.

Use JOSM to Edit Map information

When you open JOSM, it looks like this.It shows the information about the version your are using.

Let's start editing map using JOSM:

First, an original map data is needed. So let's download it from OpenStreetMap server. Later you can save the map data in your computer and use it for offline editting next time.

Open the File -> download from OSM

Use JOSM to Edit Map informationIf you are using a mouse: left-click and drag: select a range that you want to download. right-click and drag: move the map and change the center of the view. mouse scroll: zoom in and zoom out

If you prefer using keyboard:"Ctrl" + "." : zoom in"Ctrl" + "," : zoom out"Crtl" + "up/lef/down/right": move the map

But be aware: if the range you select is too big, the sever might not agree the downloading. So focus on where you want to edit once a time.

After the downloading, you maybe find the map like the left pic.

To change the view, go to Imagery ->Bing Setand the bing map will show as background.

Zoom in and choose the "draw nodes" botton so that than you can line out the buidling you want to edit like the one showed left.

press "Q" to right the angle of the shape you drew if you want.

Now you can edit the properties of the building:

Press "+Add" in the properties/membership window.

Fill the key conlum "building" and the value "yes" and click "OK" so the area will be recognized as a building.

Then you can add another property to show where you got this data:

To save the edition, you can choose uploading to OpenStreetMap directly by go toFile ->Upload Data

Then, this window is opened and you can make a brief comment about why you made these changes. And click "Upload".

If you are not yet logged in, a window of authentication will be opened and ask for username and password. Fill out and click enter to go on.

And the changes will be saved in the OSM server, which you can check on minutes later.

If you are not connected to the network or you want to edit more detailed information later, you may choose to save the changes in your computer:

File -> Save as...
