Original Short Form video (“Online Videos”) – Editorial & Technical Guidelines For any queries related to this section, please contact the relevant person(s) named below

Technical Specifications for Shooting Video & Images

Shooting Specification for non-Broadcast Video. If in doubt, please contact your Programme Manager, or [email protected]

In all cases material must be shot at 1920 pixels x 1080 pixels at 25 frames per second, using the highest video bitrate possible, at an aspect ratio of 16:9.

You may shoot interlaced or progressive.

You should use HD broadcast-specification cameras wherever possible/available/affordable. This is the only method whereby your content can also be broadcast on UK television platforms in addition to online.

If you cannot meet the Broadcast Television specification for shooting, then you may drop to the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) Camera tiers outlined below in “Tier 2J”, “Tier 3” and “Tier 4”. However, this then prevents your production from being shown on linear Broadcast TV in the UK.

The absolute minimum shooting spec is HDV 1080i or HDV 1080p at minimum 25 Mbps for the video bitrate. This is the lowest common denominator, and note that this prevents your production from being shown on linear Broadcast TV in the UK.

If in doubt, please contact your Programme Manager, or [email protected]

FOR INFO: EBU Camera Tiers are outlined in detail in this document - https://tech.ebu.ch/docs/r/r118.pdf However, the tiers can be summarised as:

HD Tier SP: Specialist or special effects cameras

HD Tier 1: Shoulder mounted professional single or 3 sensor camera.

HD Tier 2L: (Long-form) professional cameras with 50 Mbit/s minimum recording codec and full resolution sensor.

HD Tier 2J: (Journalism) professional with 35 Mbit/s minimum recording codec and full resolution sensors.

HD Tier 3: Small, high quality semi-professional for production use.

HD Tier 4: Approved small consumer HD cameras.

Additionally Ultra-HD cameras are now appearing on the market, which meet and exceed the Broadcast Specification:

UHD1 Tier 1: Full Resolution Ultra High Definition Cameras capable of delivering the full UHD1 resolution of 3840 x 2160 or greater

UHD1 Tier 2: Ultra High Definition Cameras with UHD1 outputs but deliver a resolution between 1920 x 1080 and 3840 x 2160

Note that if additional video assets for linear TV promotion are being funded you must film the source

material HD broadcast-specification cameras

Image Guidelines and Specifications

General This section provides guidance for editorial partners supplying imagery for Channel 4 Online in the absence of Channel 4 publicity material. The Channel 4 Online brand suits full frame landscape imagery rather than montages of smaller photographs. Our bold approach using compelling images on a large scale give us a real point of difference from other TV digital platforms. Supplied images should be simple and bold. Images should fairly and accurately reflect the editorial remit of the programme they have been created to represent. Where possible, images should show principles cast, presenters, contributors in in a clear, interesting and relevant way and give a clear visual message to our users. Role Pictures plus words, not pictures of words!

Our images will almost always be used alongside verbal communication. The role of the image is to enhance the words, not be a picture of them.

Size Keep it simple.

Get close to the action. Importantly, supplied images should work in a multiple sizes. Images need to appear clear when scaled down for handheld devices and tablet screens.

Images should be supplied at maximum resolution and quality. Maximum quality JPEGs.

Images supplied under 2800 pixels (longest edge) will not be considered for use.

Screen grabs or low quality images will not be considered for use. Depth Have clarity

Images should be sharp, properly exposed, and have little or no unintended grain or digital noise. There should be no images with motion blur or lens distortion impacting on the quality of the image. The depth of field should be accurate for the subject. The principle cast, presenters or objects should be in complete focus and sharp.

Images should never have text or logos applied to them without first consulting the Senior Picture Editor: [email protected]

Legal restrictions Avoid submitting images with the following content:

Graphic sex or nudity • Violence or scenes of torture • Guns or scenes of aggressive and imposing threat • Images that may harm the moral development of minors • Images that may incite religious or sexual hatred • Images containing obvious sponsorship or product endorsement.

Please don’t supply images that have a limited license or copyright period.
