With more than 25 years of experience creating visual solutions in partnership with a variety of clients, Scott Hull Associates knows that a successful image is the result of three key steps:

If nobody feels anything, nobody will do anything.

That’s why, in our opinion, moving the market always

comes down to moving a person – evoking an emotion.

What evokes emotion more effectively than Art?

IT’S R eALLy qu ITe S I m pLe.

Originality

We’ve been noticing a movement back to organic, hands-on design, which represents an opportunity for the illustrator. Agencies and design groups seem to be searching for a way to connect with their consumer, not just get their at tention for a fleeting moment , and illustration is a natural fit .

COllabOratiOn

To be truly effective in today’s media-saturated environment it takes many people working together, with a shared set of objectives, to create the visuals that will trigger a response. Each of our ar tists work closely with the client to create original ar twork that enables them to tell their story.

results

Getting on the consumer’s radar screen, and staying for longer than a blip, requires a feat bordering on the impossible. The successful illustrator needs to harness these trends into viable visuals that move markets. We believe that a strong original illustration will connect with our client ’s consumer in a way that no other medium can and will create measurable response.

mICHAeL LOTeNeRO SpeAKS AbOuT HIS CuSTOm bACKSpLASH - About 18 years ago, a close friend of mine was moving to a new apartment. He had a huge wall of thick plate glass shelving which he had loaded onto the moving truck. i guess he made a sharp turn and about 12 sheets of 1/4 inch thick glass went flying around the back of the moving van, cracking and breaking most of the glass into pieces. He stopped by my house to see if i had any ideas of what to do with it. At the time i was fresh out of art school, with little to paint on or with, i salvaged the least damaged of the bunch and decided they would be a great surface to paint on the back of, then flip over to show the other side. These pieces turned into my first show at an

established gallery. Much like animation cell painting, you are working backwards, doing the final line work first, then finishing with the fill in of color. This led me to painting on other clear surfaces like heavy gauge clear vinyl, which is lighter and less breakable than glass. (see navarro film at http://lotenero.com/film.html).

When i was remodeling my kitchen, i just wasn’t satisfied with what was available in terms of tile and stainless, so i thought of using one of my own pieces as the backsplash in my kitchen. not only is it unlike any other backsplash around, it is truly functional in terms of protecting the wall, easy clean up and being maintenance free. i’ve also done custom glass top tables and bars.

The Design team at LpK needed to push the pringles brand into an even more energetic direction, and they had a hunch that photography wouldn’t trigger the response they had in mind. How does an image make a mouth water? Michael Bast, the accomplished food artist, was able to show them

lPK chose to visit scotthull.com, where they found an intuitive search engine that allowed them to find a Michael Bast who had the aesthetic that they were looking for.

Michael Bast worked alongside the lPK design team, providing them with tight sketches and files catered to their needs. The result of knowing their idea has been realized? lPK likes to call it “Warm and Fuzzy goodness.”

Michael Bast has worked with such clients as Hidden Valley ranch, Celestial Seasonings, Keebler, Sunkist, and other brands that you’ll probably find in your cupboard. See more of his work at the newly designed scottull.com.

When FRCH initially contacted mark Reidy, they were looking for help to visualize the new Great American ballpark in Cincinnati, Ohio. What they didn’t expect was an entire visual identity inside and out. Mark was able to create art for the ballpark’s logo signage, exterior sculptural bas-relief, and two murals showcasing the great teams in red’s history translated into interior mosaics. Mark’s iconic talent and expertise at production enabled FrCH to shine in the eyes of their client, and the stadium to shine in the eyes of the fans.

Mark reidy’s illustration for the entrance of the great American Ballpark in Cincinnati, Ohio was sculpted into a 50ft bas relief. Mark worked hand in hand with the sculptor to supply the final art

in a way that made the process go smoothly. The final effect is a welcome sight.

Mark reidy’s heroic post-modern style was perfect for translating into a series of mosaic murals that hang inside the main entrance of the park. The two murals depict the great teams of reds history.

indianapolis Power and light Company came to Scott Hull Associates with the need for an artist to partner with them in communicating their commitment to environmental preservation, protection and renewal. Because of her organic style and ability to tell a story, Scott Hull artist Penelope Dullaghan was brought into the project. Together iPl and Penelope created the iPl Environmental Stewardship report. The report reinforces iPl’s philosophical position on environmental stewardship, while also quantifying examples of the wide range of specific actions the company has taken to bring its principles into practice. iPl has long been involved in both operational and community activities that encourage wise use of environmental resources, and promote protection and preservation.

Distribution of the report began on March 20, 2008, each commenter so far has praised the report’s effectiveness in conveying its intended message. iPl performs periodic research among community leaders (the primary audience of this piece) via a survey. During the next opinion leader survey, iPl will be watching response trends on environment-related questions to see if this report has positively influenced perceptions.

The nation behaves well if it treats the natural resources as assets which it must turn over to the next generation increased, and not impaired, in value.

We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children.

Triad Stage is a local theatre company in greensboro, north Carolina. Triad contacted Scott Hull Associates while it was searching for a way to promote their upcoming season throughout the city with a word-of-mouth marketing program. Taking advantage of their wide range of styles, Scott Hull Associates assigned each play from the season to different artists. The artists created a “Broadway quality poster series” that got the public talking. Posters were placed throughout the city, as well as, the theater exterior and word of mouth promotion of Triad Stage took place in the city’s social circles.

As the one of the countries leading refuse truck builders, Autocar came to Scott Hull Associates with a problem. How do you change the perception of the trash man? Huffine Design inc., Autocar’s agency of record, developed the idea of a superhero figure that would re-appear each year in Autocar’s booth at the Waste Expo. rob Schwager was teamed up with Huffine Design inc. based on his extensive experience in the comic book industry. rob developed a tough guy named Joe Autocar, a character that represented hard work, friendliness, and a desire to help his community. rob’s character has since enabled Autocar to help give pride to the thousands of Trash Collectors around the country and has had a positive impact on the perception of their business.

ReSuLT

Autocar received great reviews from the attendees at the show and some of them wrote Autocar to thank them for lifting up the profession. They decided to expand Joe’s influence, making him the honorary mascot for the company’s brand.
