Change of Major If you want to change your major please complete the Change of Major form as soonas you have made your decision, as it impacts your Orientation schedule in getting youto the correct college and department meeting.

Each college faculty and staff conducts their advising and meetings differently.

LUNCH noon–1:30 p.m.Harcombe Dining HallOnce your college meeting concludes you are free to go to lunch. Lunch will be catered in Harcombe Dining Hall. Gluten free and vegan options are available. Lunch is included in all student and guest Orientation and transition fees. Meal cards can be found behind your nametag. Shuttles will be available to bring you back to the Watt Family Innovation Center to walk to the Brooks Center for the Performing Arts after lunch. See page 18 for shuttle routes and times.

Orientation Ambassadors will act out scenarios about roommate conflicts, respecting peers, alcohol and drug use, campus climate, homesickness, interpersonal and sexual violence, and cyber bullying. Following the performance, students will meet in their small groups again to discuss the topics addressed.

NEW STUDENT SOCIAL 9–11 p.m.Students Only, Barnes CenterNew students are welcome to join this student-only experience in the newly renovated, student-social facility, the Barnes Center. This social will give students time to continueto meet each other and explore their new Clemson home!

MOVE-INFriday, Aug. 18–Saturday, Aug. 19

• New students will need to sign up for a Move-In appointment through University Housing & Dining’s website.

• All meal plans will begin Friday, Aug. 18.

BILL PAYMENT• Fall 2017 bills will be available in mid-to-late July. The dates that bills will be released and the payment deadline will be emailed to students and authorized users.

Authorized Users are parents/guardians which students can add to their iROAR account to access their student bill. The “Authorized Users tab” is available at the top of the bill in iROAR.

• Bills are typically due the second week in August which is the week before classes begin.

• The Clemson University Four Payment Plan will be available for enrollment the day bills open. There is a $75 enrollment fee for this payment plan that is due at the time of sign-up. The remaining balance will be billed in four installments from July until October.

MATH PLACEMENT TEST (CMPT) OR MODERN LANGUAGE PLACEMENT TEST (MLPT) MAKEUP

The CMPT is required for academic advising and for anyone anticipating to enroll in MATH 1060 — even those with AP or transfer credit. If you still have not completed the test, your academic adviser will ask you to complete it prior to your day two advising session and course registration. It is critical to start in the right level of math to be successful in your academic program. The CMPT is designed to ensure your proper placement.

The Modern Language Placement Test (MLPT) may be required depending on a student’s academic plan. If a student’s intended academic program requires a modern language (or if they wish to take a modern language course as an elective) and the student plans to take French, German or Spanish to meet that requirement, they must take the MLPT before registering for a language course. If you are attending Orientation and have yet to complete the MLPT, you may be asked to complete it prior to your course registration.

If you want to change your major, please complete the Change of Major form as soon as you have made your decision, as it impacts your Orientation schedule in getting you to the correct college and department meeting.

Many students do not know what they want to major in, let alone what they are going to do after college. It’s okay! We encourage students who struggle with this decision to stay in their current major, meet with the college advising center and work toward general education courses. In the fall semester, students are encouraged to make an appointment with the Center for Career and Professional Development to start exploring interests and a potential new major.

CHANGE OF MAJOR OPPORTUNITIESIn order to advise students most appropriately for course registration at Orientation, it is important to change your major as soon as you’ve made the decision to do so. Failure to change your major can delay your course registration window opening time. Please change your major before attending your college meeting.

INTERESTED IN A CLOSED MAJOR?Some majors at Clemson are limited due to space availability. In this instance, they are considered to be “closed.” A student interested in enrolling in a closed major should set up a meeting with the Academic Advising Center associated with that major early, during the fall semester, which will alert the student to specific change of major requirements (GPA, hours completed, etc.). Additionally, if the Advising Center is aware of a student’s interest in a change of major, they can include them on their correspondence with their majors. The keys to a successful change of major (especially “closed” majors) are maintaining fall grades and making contact with an academic adviser in the desired major.

ECLIPSE OVER CLEMSONClemson, South Carolina will be a hub for Great American Eclipse watchers up and down the eastern seaboard on Monday, Aug. 21, 2017. The next time a total eclipse over Clemson will occur will be July 2772. Partial eclipse begins at 1:08 p.m. and the total eclipse for two minutes and 37 seconds at 2:37 p.m. Special events will be held for this once-in-a-lifetime experience. The first few weeks and months coming to Clemson will be filled with new experiences, fears and excitement. All of these are part of your overall transition to college and to Clemson. During your transition to Clemson, we want you to understand the academic culture and expectations at Clemson, so you can identify as a member of the campus community and begin to understand your personal and social responsibility as a college student. To help achieve these outcomes and the required components, we have broken down your transition into three distinct parts:

WELCOME LEADERS AND HOMEROOMA Welcome Leader is an undergraduate student who has volunteered to support and mentor new students during CU 1000 Tiger Transition and throughout their transition to Clemson. You will first meet your Welcome Leader in your Tiger Transition homeroom. It is a convenient space to meet your Welcome Leader and fellow new students.

Beginning early August, you will be able to locate your Welcome Leader’s information through your CU 1000 Tiger Transition Canvas course. Your Welcome Leader will then guide you through your Tiger Transition events and activities the days before classes begin. They will also continue to serve as a resource for you throughout the fall semester. You will hear from your Welcome Leader weekly through the first six weeks.

Your Welcome Leader is available before, during and after classes begin for any questions or support you might need during this time of transition.

PART ONE: NEW STUDENT ORIENTATIONYour participation during the summer Orientation experience is part one of Tiger Transition. The items you have accomplished prior to attending Orientation and the activities and meetings you are attending during Orientation are all in preparation for your arrival this fall. As soon as you leave campus from summer Orientation, you move into the second phase.

PART TWO: KICK-OFF CLEMSONUniversity Convocation, President’s Picnic, Welcome Back Festival, RecFest, Out-of-State Connections, Many More Social and Night Programs

University Convocation is on Monday, Aug. 21 and is the main experience during Kick-Off Clemson and the formal welcome to the academic community at Clemson. University President, Dr. James P. Clements, and student leaders will welcome you to Clemson University. All new undergraduate and graduate students will hear this year’s common reading speaker and editor of “This I Believe,” Jay Allison.

PART THREE: CU 1000Part three of your Tiger Transition is to enroll in and complete CU 1000. CU 1000 is a required, zero-credit course that introduces new students to Clemson’s academic and community standards as well as to resources and support services that can help students make a successful academic, personal and social transition to Clemson. You will register for CU 1000 during Orientation and complete the course during the fall semester. The content for this course will be delivered through online modules and in-person workshops. You will complete and submit all CU 1000 assignments in Canvas, Clemson’s online student learning management system. After completing this course, you will learn about Clemson’s Core Values of Integrity, Honesty and Respect, campus success resources such as the Academic Success Center and Cooper Library, strategies for becoming a more effective learner, and how to make smart decisions that promote personal and community safety and success.

You will receive an email announcement at the beginning of the fall semester with instructions about how to access the course syllabus and assignments in Canvas.
