technicians recommend keeping children Rear-Facing for as long as possible. The switch to Forward-Facing will depend on your childs age and size. Consult the Usage Recommendations section.

    4. Install your Toddler Car Seat with your Orbit Base or with the Braces. Only use your Toddler Car Seat on an Orbit Base Rear-Facing, and on an Orbit Base with a Green Circular Seal (shown at right) on its Center Label. When using the Orbit Base, have the Base manual handy for instructions about Base installation. (The Orbit Base manual can also be stored with this one inside the Rear Access Panel, at the rear of the Toddler Car Seat.)

    5. Ensure that the Toddler Car Seat is level. Level Indicators show whether the Toddler Car Seat is properly reclined. The recline can be adjusted, both when using the Orbit Base or the Braces. A carseat that is too reclined can result in injury or ejections, and a carseat that is too upright can result in breathing diffi culties.

    6. Check the security of the Toddler Car Seat by pulling in several different directions after installation. The Toddler Car Seat should not move more than 1 inch (1) in any direction once installed. ( Note: The Toddler Car Seat must be locked in Rear-Facing position when using on the Orbit Base.)

    7. Secure your child. The sections in Securing Your Child provide you with instructions to secure and adjust the Restraint Harness to the proper fi t for

No child restraint system can guarantee protection from injury in every situation. However, proper use of the Orbit Toddler Car Seat reduces the risk of serious injury or death to your child. Your childs safety depends on you installing and using this child restraint system correctly every time. This instruction manual guides you in detail through the following steps:

height: review the Usage Recommendations section of this manual.

    3. Select a seating location in your car. An important overview of vehicle seating locations is in the Usage Recommendations section. There you can fi nd information about air bags and different types of vehicle seat belts. The Toddler Car Seat can be installed using either the LATCH System or vehicle seat belts.

Note: According to accident statistics, children have less chance of injury when properly restrained in rear vehicle seats. In addition, safety

Use the Orbit Toddler Car Seat only with children 15 to 65 pounds and less than 50 inches. Use the carseat according the following usage recommendations:

You will notice an overlap of the Rear- and Forward-Facing weight ranges. This exibility to make the transition when your child is over 1

year old and it feels right for your childs size. Orbit Baby, along with many safety groups, recommends keeping children in a Rear-Facing position as long as possible while following the above requirements. However, the child should switch from Rear- to Forward-Facing if the child is over 1 year of age or they are uncomfortable in a Rear-Facing position.

    Rear-Facing Use: 15-35 pounds

(all children under 1 year of age MUST stay Rear-Facing)

    Forward-Facing Use:Over 1 year old AND 20-65 pounds

    AND under 50 inches

The Right Position for Your Childs Weight and Height

Discontinue usage of the Toddler Car Seat when your child grows beyond 65 pounds or 50 inches, or his/her ears are above the top of the seat back.

    1. Choosing a Vehicle Seating Location

You may choose a seating location in your vehicle that has acceptable LATCH anchors (part of the Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children system) or vehicle seat belts approved by the vehicle manufacturer. The shape of the seat and vehicle seat belt type may also affect the installation of the Toddler Car Seat.

According to accident statistics, children have less chance of injury when properly restrained in rear vehicle seats, rather than front vehicle seats.

In addition, the center rear seating location is considered the best location if ALL the following conditions are met:

    a) Lower LATCH anchors are spaced, center-to-center, between 11 and 20 in. (280 and 500 mm) apart or the seat has an acceptable vehicle seat belt

    b) LATCH or vehicle seat belt provides a secure installation and remains tightly adjusted around the carseat

    c) The seat geometry allows the seat to be properly reclined once installed

    d) If the vehicle seat back is adjustable, the vehicle seat back is locked into the upright position

    e) Installation in this seating location is permitted by the vehicle manufacturer

Seat Positions & Vehicle Restraint Options

Rear-Facing Considerations: When used Rear-Facing, the Toddler Car Seat can be docked on the Orbit Base or installed by itself with the addition of the included Braces. Safety technicians recommend keeping children in a Rear-Facing position for as long as possible.

Important Notice: The Orbit Base has been updated to extend its usage for the Toddler Car Seat. You can only use your Orbit Base with your Toddler Car Seat if it has the Green Circular Seal shown below. All Bases manufactured before 2/2008 must be updated by contacting Orbit Baby or visiting www.orbitbaby.com/support/upgrade.

The Right Position for Your Childs Weight and Height contd

Forward-Facing Considerations: In the Forward-Facing orientation, the Toddler Car Seat can only be used with the included Braces. It is not possible to dock the Toddler Car Seat into the Orbit Base Forward-Facing.

Please refer to the blue Rear-Facing section (page 28) or red Forward-Facing section (page 56) of this manual for more information about how your child should fi t in the Toddler Car Seat.

After youve chosen a seating location, follow instructions in this manual for installation using LATCH or vehicle seat belts, and the child restraint information in your vehicle owners manual.

! WARNING !Improper Placement of the Toddler Car Seat

Increases the Risk of Serious Injury and Death

    - If the LATCH Belt or vehicle seat belt does not stay tightly adjusted around the Toddler Car Seat at all times, reinstall or refer to your vehicle owners manual.

    - Some vehicles do not have any seating locations where a child restraint system can be installed securely. If you are unsure where to place the Toddler Car Seat, refer to your vehicle owners manual for instructions about carseat use.

    - If the vehicle seat belt does not remain tight or the Toddler Car Seat can move more than 1 inch in any direction, your child could be seriously injured in a sharp turn, sudden stop, or crash. Move the Toddler Car Seat to another seating location and try again. If in doubt, refer to the vehicle owners manual for specifi c instructions regarding child restraint use.

Seat Positions & Vehicle Restraint Options contd

    Guidelines:

    - Never secure the Toddler Car Seat Rear-Facing in a seating location with a front airbag. Check your vehicle owners manual regarding air bag compatibility with child carseats (Figure A).

    - Never secure the Toddler Car Seat in a vehicle seating location unless recommended by the vehicle owners manual.

    - Only install the Toddler Car Seat in forward-facing vehicle seats. Do not install carseat in side-facing or rear-facing vehicle seats (Figure B & C).

    - Do not secure the Toddler Car Seat in vehicle seating locations where the vehicle seat back does not lock in an upright position.

21Starting with the 2003 model year, all vehicles are required to have one or more seating positions with LATCH attachment system for carseats (Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children). Many manufacturers began including LATCH systems with their 2000 model year vehicles. Refer to your vehicle owners manual to locate all anchors. The lower anchors may be visible at the vehicle seat crease; if not, their locations may be marked with the symbol to the right. The top tether anchor may be located somewhere behind the vehicle seat.

! WARNING !Improper Installation Can Cause Serious Injury and Death

See your Vehicle Owners manual regarding requirements for using LATCH anchorages with this child restraint system. If you are unsure how to identify or use the LATCH system, contact the vehicle manufacturer.

LATCH Connectors must be secured to the vehicle LATCH anchors only. Connections to other vehicle components could result in an insecure installation of the Toddler Car Seat.

Never attach two LATCH Connectors to one LATCH anchor, unless recommended by the vehicle owners manual for your vehicle.

Never use both the lower LATCH anchors and the vehicle seat belt system at the same time to secure the Toddler Car Seat.

Only install the Toddler Car Seat with LATCH anchors if using a vehicle seating location that is recommended by the vehicle manufacturer. For rear-center seating positions that have a center-to-center LATCH anchor spacing between 11 and 20 inches (280 mm and 500 mm) (See Image A), only use if recommended by the vehicle manufacturer.

Seat Positions & Vehicle Restraint Options contd

Pay careful attention to the type of LATCH anchors and vehicle seat belts that are in your vehicle; some cargo anchors that are unsafe to use with child restraints look the same as LATCH anchors. Read your vehicle owners manual for LATCH anchorage locations.

25Seat Positions & Vehicle Restraint Options contd

The following types of vehicle seat belts are NOT compatible with the Toddler Car Seat and Orbit Base:

    1) Lap, shoulder-lap or shoulder belts mounted to the vehicle door (See Image A)

    2) Motorized automatic vehicle seat belts

    3) Three point vehicle seat belts that have separate retractors for the shoulder section and the lap section (See Image B)

    4) Vehicle seat belts with emergency-locking retractors that only lock in the event of a crash

    5) Lap belts forward of the seat crease (See Image C)

WARNING! !Death or Serious Injury Can Occur

Some vehicle seat belts cannot securely hold the Orbit Toddler Car Seat and Orbit Base. The vehicle seat belt must hold a child restraint system tightly at all times.

There are many types of vehicle seat belts. Different types of seat belts may even be used at different seating locations within the same vehicle.

If the vehicle seat belt does not remain tightly adjusted around the carseat or the Toddler Car Seat can move more than 1 inch in any direction, your child could be seriously injured in a sharp turn, sudden stop, or crash. If the Toddler Car Seat is loose, move it to another seating location and re-install.

Your vehicle owners manual will have information on which vehicle seat belts in your vehicle can be used safely with a child restraint system. If in doubt, contact the vehicle manufacturer for guidance.

Choosing Between the Orbit Base and the Included Braces

Important Notice: The Orbit Base has been updated to extend its usage for the Toddler Car Seat. If your Orbit Base label has the Green Circular Seal to the right, it can be used with both the Toddler Car Seat and the Infant Car Seat. If your Orbit Base was manufactured before 02/2008, you must make sure it is updated before using it with the Toddler Car Seat. You can do so by contacting Orbit Baby or by visiting www.orbitbaby.com/support/upgrade. All Bases can be used with the Infant Car Seat.

Option 2: Installation with the Side Impact Braces. If you do not own an Orbit Base, or are traveling without your Orbit Base, the Toddler Car Seat must be installed using the Braces. They can be attached and detached from the Toddler Car Seat easily, and can be stored in the included Brace Bag.

Securing the Toddler Car Seat to the Base requires fi rst lowering the Toddler Car Seat to snap into the SmartHubTM, then rotating the Toddler Car Seat to lock into the Rear-Facing Position.

    1. Make sure the top of the Base and SmartHub are clear of objects before docking the Toddler Car Seat.

    2. Grasp the Toddler Car Seat fi rmly (Photo B). Dock the bottom of the Toddler Car Seat into the circular SmartHub of the Base until you hear and feel a CLICK (Photo C).

    3. Rotate the Toddler Car Seat until you hear and feel another CLICK as it locks into the Rear-Facing position (Photo D). The Toddler Car Seat will only lock when

For increased comfort and ease of use, the Toddler Car Seat can be docked from almost any angle onto the Base.

rotated into the Rear-Facing position. Note that it will only lock when the Release Levers are not pulled.

    4. When locked into the Rear-Facing position, make sure the Toddler Car Seat does not touch the back of the seat in front of it (Photo E).

    5. CHECK the locked position by looking at the Rotation Indicators on the Base (Photo F). If they are fully red, then re-dock the carseat.

NOTE: A small amount of rotational movement is normal, but the carseat should not pull off of the Base.

If the Rotation Indicators are fully red with every docking attempt, check to make sure your Orbit Base is upgraded for Toddler Car Seat use. See page 16 for details.

    6. Do a fi nal CHECK each time you re-dock: pull the Toddler Car Seat in several directions (Photo H) to be certain it is locked. It should not rotate out of the Rear-Facing position. If it does, remove the carseat and contact Orbit Baby.

To rotate and remove the Toddler Car Seat from the Base:

    1. Squeeze one or both Release Levers upward (Photo I). As you squeeze the Release Levers, the Hub Locks retract and the Toddler Car Seat can be rotated.

    2. Squeeze the Release Levers fully to lift the Toddler Car Seat out of the Base while grasping the seat securely with both hands (Photo J).

! WARNING !Death or Serious Injury Can Occur

FALL HAZARD: Grasp the Toddler Car Seat fi rmly by sides and seat front when lifting. PINCH HAZARD: Clear your childs fi ngers and hands from the Side Handle area.

The Braces are two supports (left and right) that ensure a stable and secure installation of the Toddler Car Seat when installed in the car without the Orbit Base. They come in a small bag, the Brace Bag, inside the box with your carseat (Photo K).

Before starting the installation, remove the Braces from the Brace Bag and pull the Braces apart so they are ready to be installed.

On each side of the Toddler Car Seat, you will see two Brace Plugs - small grey, fi gure-8 shapes. Each Plug has an opening that will accept one of the metal rods extending from the Brace (Photo L).

Orbit recommends using the Tether at all times while Forward-Facing if you have a LATCH Tether anchorage in your car; using the Tether will improve the stability of the child restraint and will reduce risk of injury.

The Tether should only be used when the child restraint is Forward-Facing. The Tether should only be anchored to approved Anchorage points, some tether anchors are identifi ed by a tether anchor symbol (Photo S); check your vehicle owners manual for locations and more information. Older cars may not have Tether Anchorage points. The Toddler Car Seat should be fully installed BEFORE attaching the Tether.

    1. If the Tether is not already unclipped and fully out of the Rear Access Panel, open the Panel and unclip the Tether Hook from the plastic D-ring (Photo T).

    2. Close the Panel with the Tether Strap extending out from its slot (Photo U).

The Orbit Toddler Car Seat is certifi ed for use in aircraft and is labeled as such. Most airlines in the U.S. and Canada will allow the use of a carseat that is labeled as an approved child restraint for aircraft use. Always contact the airline about their carseat policy before traveling, and follow their guidelines for carseat use.

You can install the Toddler Car Seat either Rear- or Forward-Facing in an aircraft.

To secure the Toddler Car Seat Rear-Facing in an aircraft seatFollow the instructions in the blue Rear-Facing section, Installation with Braces & Lap Style Seat Belts (without Orbit Base), on pages 52-54.

To secure the Toddler Car Seat Forward-Facing in an aircraft seatFollow the instructions in the red Forward-Facing section, Installation with Lap-Style Seat Belts (without Orbit Base), on pages 70-71.

    1. You should choose the same orientation (either Rear- or Forward-Facing) for an aircraft installation as you would use in a car for your child at that time.

    2. Make sure that the aircraft seat belt can be tightly secured around the Toddler Car Seat. If the aircraft lap belt is too short, ask your fl ight attendant for a belt extender.

    Using in an Aircraft

    3. If installing the Toddler Car Seat Rear-Facing, it is important to ensure that the back of the carseat will not touch the back of the aircraft seat in front of you, both when the aircraft seat is upright and reclined.

    4. Recline the aircraft seat back when installing the seat; then bring it back upright for an even tighter installation.

Tips For Traveling With Your Toddler in an Aircraft

    1. Reserve a separate aircraft seat for your child and the child restraint.

    2. Contact the airline in advance to be sure this child restraint complies with their specifi c requirements, and to check whether they will provide discounted tickets for children.

    3. Bulkhead seats or Business Class seats are preferred, as they have more room in front of them.

    4. Install your Toddler Car Seat in a window seat to avoid blocking the row.

    5. Take advantage of pre-boarding for families with children. The extra time will help to get the seat installed tightly.

Note: the Toddler Car Seat can ONLY be used with the included Braces in aircraft it cannot be used with the Orbit Base in aircraft.

The Upholstery can be machine washed for cleaning. Orbit Baby always recommends using a front loading washer and washing the Upholstery inside a pillow case to avoid damage. It can be easily removed WITHOUT detaching the Restraint Harness from the seat shell. Replace the Upholstery once cleaned and dried completely. DO NOT use the Toddler Car Seat without the Upholstery.

    Removing the Upholstery

    1. Remove the Sunshade: See page 95.

    2. Free the edges of the Upholstery from the seat shell by stretching them out from under the rim (Photo A).

    3. Pull out the plastic Side Tabs from the slots next to each Side Handle (Photo B).

    4. Free the Adjustable Headrest by detaching the hook-and-loop fasteners from the behind the Upholstery and pulling it free from the Upholstery (Photo C).

    6. Free the Shoulder Pads from the Shoulder Straps and pass the Shoulder Straps through the now open Center Panel to free the Upholstery from the back (Photo E).

    7. Pull the Crotch Buckle through the slot in the bottom of the Upholstery (Photo F), which completely frees the Upholstery from the Toddler Car Seat.

    Cleaning the Upholstery

    1. Machine wash in cold water on delicate cycle. Orbit Baby always recommends using a front loading washer and washing the Upholstery inside a pillow case to avoid damage. DO NOT USE BLEACH.

    Metal and Plastic Parts

Metal and plastic parts on the Toddler Car Seat and Base may be wiped clean with a mild soap and water solution. Towel dry. Do not use household detergents, such as bleach or abrasive agents. These detergents can weaken plastic parts.

    Restraint Harness and Belts

The Restraint Harness and other straps and belts may be spot cleaned with a mild soap and water solution and towel dried. DO NOT immerse the Restraint Harness, or other straps and belts, in water - doing so may weaken them. If the Harness is still heavily soiled after spot cleaning, contact Orbit Baby for further instructions.

    Harness Adjuster Strap

Periodically check the adjuster area to be sure it is clean and free of food, coins, dirt, and other objects. If debris is present, it must be removed to prevent interference with the adjuster mechanism. Brush away loose debris and sponge clean using warm water and mild soap. Towel dry. If a child eats and drinks in the Toddler Car Seat, the Crotch Buckle and Buckle Tongues should be periodically checked and cleaned of any accumulated debris or liquids. The Crotch Buckle may be cleaned with a damp cloth or removed (see page 84) and thoroughly rinsed with warm water. Towel dry. Test the Crotch Buckle by fastening and unfastening until a positive click is heard when inserting the Buckle Tongues. If a click is not heard, repeat the cleaning procedure. Do not use lubricants, solvents, abrasive cleaners, soap or other household detergents on the Crotch Buckle or Buckle Tongues.

    Sunshade

The Sunshade is removable and may be spot cleaned with a damp sponge and mild soap. Do not machine wash or dry the Sunshade.

SmartHub, Rotational Check Mechanism, & Hub Locks

Keep the entire bottom Hub area, and the Hub Locks specifi cally, on the Toddler Car Seat clean and free of foreign material in order for the Toddler Car Seat to function properly. As well, keep the Bases SmartHub and Rotational Check Mechanisms clean and free of foreign material. Do not allow any liquids or particulate matter (such as sand or soil) to enter any of these areas.
