• This is a large modular set of
object templates and related
business logic created using
Oracle Communications
Design Studio for UIM. It is
based on Oracle’s leading-
practice model for Metro-E
service fulfillment
Supported Metro-E Services
• Ethernet Service variants: EP-
Line, EP-LAN and EP-Tree
• Ethernet Virtual Service
variants: EVP-Line, EVP-LAN,
EVP-Tree
Oracle’s Technology Packs for Unified Inventory Management
leverage our domain expertise and experience in building models to
provide a rich set of business entities for a particular domain. The
Metro Ethernet Technology Pack enables service providers to
quickly define and manage Metro Ethernet services and resources
using Oracle Communications Unified Inventory Management, and
provides a solid base for project-specific adaptation.
Metro Ethernet Forum Standard Alignment
The Metro Ethernet Technology Pack provides pre-defined business entities and
behaviors commonly required by providers of data networking services using Metro
Ethernet technology as standardized by the Metro Ethernet Forum. (MEF).
The modeling provided by the Technology Pack is aligned with MEF architecture
defined by MEF 4 Metro Ethernet Network Architecture Framework Part 1:
Generic Framework definitions and Metro Ethernet details described by MEF6.1
Metro Ethernet Services Definitions Phase 2 and MEF10.1 Ethernet Services
Attributes Phase 2. Therefore, users can be confident that terminology and concepts
are aligned with industry direction and common usage.
Metro Ethernet Services
Metro Ethernet technology enables great flexibility in providing connectivity
amongst customer sites. Tracking the variants in deployed services is important in
managing customer services and managing internal resource usage.
The Metro Ethernet Technology Pack provides the ability to represent port-based
Ethernet Service variants as well as VLAN-based Ethernet Virtual Service variants
for point-to-point, multipoint-to-multipoint and rooted multipoint services. Ethernet
Virtual Connections are modeled to represent the appropriately connectivity
amongst sites and validation rules are included to ensure the integrity of each service
instance. For Ethernet Virtual services, the mapping of customer VLANs into
specific service instances is maintained. In addition, a rich set of service
characteristics is defined within the model to allow an accurate standardized
representation of the service to be maintained.
Data Networking Modeling
Consistent representation of customer sites with associated geographic information
and customer premises equipment (CPE) is a critical aspect of managing a network
for any sort of business networking service.
The Metro Ethernet Technology Pack includes a standard Data Networking model

that captures key aspects of the service deployment directly visible to the customer,
including CPE and interface information. The Data Networking site definition is
applicable to multiple different instances and implementations of a service thereby
minimizing inventory churn as the customer’s service deployment evolves.
VLAN Identifier Management
VLAN identifier resources are a fundamental aspect of Metro Ethernet networks.
The Metro Ethernet Technology Pack provides VLAN assignment and usage
management for both service provider and customer VLANs. This ensures
appropriate resource usage within service provider Metro Ethernet instances and
avoids errors in customer connections.
Extensibility
The Metro Ethernet Technology Pack provides a consistent structure and a rich set
of building blocks for managing Metro Ethernet services. However, in many
circumstances, it may be necessary to extend standards-based definitions with
additional information or business logic specific to a provider’s unique environment.
The Metro Ethernet Technology Pack supports this requirement by providing several
natural extension points that can be utilized without modifying the Technology Pack
itself. These extensions make use of standard patterns supported within Oracle
Communications Unified Inventory Management for augmenting existing models.
For example, different or additional business rules for validation or allocation may
be introduced as well as additional configuration modeling for Ethernet Service
configurations and Ethernet Termination specifications.
Summary
The Metro Ethernet Technology Pack provides an essential set of components
aligned with industry standards for Metro Ethernet services. Using these
components in conjunction with standard UIM capabilities enables service providers
to accurately model their Metro Ethernet service environment to the appropriate
level of detail required to support their operations. The domain knowledge and
modeling patterns encapsulated in this Technology Pack provide significant benefits
in reducing overall implementation costs and timelines for Metro Ethernet
deployments.
