Filter Mode

Introducing the brightest member of the family...

The 86146B benchtop OSA enablesnew test methods you may never havethought possible. One of theapplications of the filter mode is toallow a single tightly spaced DWDMsignal to be isolated. You can thenquantitatively analyze in the timedomain without losing any of thetraditional OSA functionality you’vecome to expect from Agilent. It is nowpossible to switch betweenparametric measurements in thephysical domain to functionalmeasurements in the time domain.

The WDM application can sequentiallyor selectively drop WDM channels thatrequire additional analysis.

The 86146B provides the flexibility todrop a single DWDM channel as tightas 12.5 GHz spacing with fast-tuningspeed, low-insertion loss, and highlyrepeatable wavelength accuracy.We’ve also designed our built-in

Filter Mode

WDM application to work with thesingle-mode monochromatoroutput path to simplify the task ofpre-selecting a desired WDMchannel for analysis.

Another application of the filter modeis to measure time resolved chirp (TRC)and to compute dispersion penalty(DPC). Using the SMF feature ofmonochrom-ator out as a preselectorwith a DCA, chirp measurements canbe made on lasers.

Accelerate Test with Built-in Applications

Built-in applications take the uncer-tainty out of measurements for WDMsystems, lasers, amplifiers, and pas-sive components. These applicationsallow for fast, accurate, easy to use,and repeatable measure-ments ofcritical parameters. All of theseapplications can be added through asimple firmware upgrade.

WDM ApplicationThe WDM application helps speed up the test process for DWDM sub-systems, so increasing channel countsdoes not mean test time increases.The application can easily measureDWDM sub-system components, suchas transmission sub-systems, opticaladd/drop multiplexers, and multiplex-ers/de-multiplexers.

This application provides accuratemeasurements for critical parameterssuch as optical signal-to-noise ratio(OSNR), channel wavelength, channelpower, and span tilt. The applicationalso provides both a graphical displayof your WDM signal as well as tabulardata. Each channel is automaticallynumbered so that test data can beeasily correlated to each channel.

OSNR measurements of modulatedsignals made with the 8614xB seriesare highly accurate due to the patenteddual sweep method. The first sweep is taken at a user-specified wideresolution bandwidth filter to ensureaccurate signal amplitude measure-ments. The second sweep is takenwith a user-specified narrow resolutionbandwidth filter to ensure accuratenoise power spectral density measure-ments. With the fast sweep speed ofthe Agilent OSA, the result is a quickand accurate OSNR measurement.

These applications allow for fast, accurate,easy to use, upgradeable, and repeatablemeasurements.

Passive Component TestApplicationThe passive component test applica-tion simplifies the test procedure forpassive components, such as filters,couplers, and isolators.

A user defined test plan allows you tocustomize and stream line the processto measure and display important deviceparameters such as insertion andreturn loss, bandwidth, and filter shape.

Source Test ApplicationThe 8614xB series offers automatedoptical source and laser characterization.

Distributed feedback (DFB), Fabry-Perot (FP) lasers and LED sources arekey components for enabling trans-mission of information in fiber opticsystems. To ensure proper operationof sources key parameters need to bemeasured.

The source test application provideseasy-to-setup and easy-to-use mea-surements. This application is design-ed to provide accurate results for thefollowing critical parameters; sidemode suppression ratio, center wave-length, mode spacing, channel power.

A single button pressstarts the application andprovides on-screeninstructions to step youthrough the measurementprocedure.

Applications

Amplifier Test ApplicationThe amplifier test applications in the 8614xB OSAs simplify theprocess of characterizing gain andnoise figure of optical amplifiers such as EDFA's, SOA's and Ramanamplifiers which facilitates in reducingtest time. There are two amplifier test methodologies available forAgilent OSAs.

All 8614xB OSAs offer the InterpolatedSource Subtraction (ISS) method formeasuring amplifiers. A single buttonpress starts the application andprovides on-screen instructions tostep you through the measurementprocedure. This application utilizes the ISS method to quickly measuregain and noise figure at a singlewavelength or at many simultaneouswavelengths. The ISS methodinterpolates the calibrated noisepower measurements at either side of the signal to determine the noisepower component hiddenbeneath the signal.

The 86146B OSA also has a built inTime Domain Extinction (TDE) methodfor measuring amplifiers. TDE can veryaccurately measure ASE power ofamplifiers with slow relaxation states,such as Erbium Doped FiberAmplifiers (EDFAs) and Erbium DopedWaveguide Amplifiers (EDWAs).

The results from both the TDE or ISSapplication are easily analyzed usingeither the graphical display of gainand noise figure vs.wavelength or viaa convenient tabular display.

The Internal EELED broadbandlight source is ideal for passivecomponent test and reduces thenumber of instruments required to perform passive componentmeasurements.

Internal Wavelength CalibratorThe internal gas cell calibrator allows you toachieve ±10 pm wavelength accuracy between1480 to 1565 nm. An external wavelength metercan extend this 10 pm accuracy across theentire OSA measurement range.

Filter Mode (86146B)Easily select and isolate a single tightlyspaced DWDM channel and drop itout. Connect the filter mode OSA to adigital communications analyzer or biterror ratio tester for analysis in theelectrical domain.

The high performance OSA models haveexcellent measurement specificationsto help you with the more traditionaltasks of product development includ-ing the highest wavelength accuracy (±10 pm), low polarization loss (0.05 dB),low insertion loss (<10 dB), and highdynamic range (–70 dB at 0.5 nm).

Any of the four independent markerscan be arbitrarily set on any of the sixavailable traces, so any absolute orrelative value can be measured. Further-more, each marker can measurebandwidth and calibrated opticalsignal-to-noise ratio quickly. The noisemarkers provide calibrated noisepower normalized to a standard 0.1 nmnoise equivalent bandwidth automat-ically for any resolution bandwidthsetting. Thus, eliminating steps andreducing your time to market.

The graphical user interface can beoperated directly or by using an exter-nal keyboard and mouse.
