Subsidiarity or Call to Family, Community, and Participation You may only ever hear of subsidiarity within Catholic Social Teaching, but it is deeply embedded in the Gospel. Jesus preached and implied subsidiarity in many passages. If we can take care of our problems, issues, or concerns within our family, or within our parish, or within the community, then we need not go further. It is helpful to think of ourselves as living within concentric circles as in the following graphic. In today’s Gospel, Jesus reminds us that we belong to one another. The first reading and the Psalm also speak to the idea that we belong to each other, to God, to Christ, all of which forms us. While we are a people set apart, we are not separated from the cares and concerns of this world. This understanding of our Christian life was reinforced in the Second Vatican Council’s Pastoral Constitution, Guadium et Spes. The constitution begins, “The joys and the hopes, the griefs and the anxieties of [people] of this age… are the joys and hopes, the griefs and anxieties of the followers of Christ.” It turns out we are all in this together. To God be the glory! One of the enduring lessons from Fr. Don I hope we as a parish continue to nurture is this notion of subsidiarity. Fr. Don has taught us, sometimes rather bluntly in his self-acclaimed curmudgeonly style, that we all have a calling by virtue of our baptism. We are St. Augustine. We are endowed with a wealth of giftedness, and we can do so much without the direct involvement of our pastor. Some of us have adapted better to this than others, but this style of teaching is not without merit. It has prodded us, maybe even empowered us, to take our faith as our own, and not simply because Father says. Part of the mission of the Missionaries of the Precious Blood is to involve laity and to empower them to be leaders. May it continue to be so with us. Dr. Anthony (Tony) Butler, DMin. Director of Religious Education
