Congratulations! Travis Hastie of 6WM who

is now part of the Under 11 N.Q. Rugby

League Team.

Dear Parents and Carers, We are now in Week 5 of the term and our students are deep into their curriculum units of work and

their learning which will be reported on by the end of the term including Term 1 learning as well as

Term 2. Season one of interschool sport has been completed for those students in Year 5 and

Year 6 who participated and our Year 3 and Year 5 students have begun the NAPLAN Tests yes-

terday. The pleasant change of weather was welcome although by the end of the day it warms up.

All of these events tell us that the year is moving along quickly.

All the best to our students who are participating in the NAPLAN tests this week.

5 Questions for Students

Have you asked your child these questions recently to find out how they are progressing with their

learning?

What are you learning?

How are you doing?

How do you know?

How can you improve?

Where can you go for help?

Our teachers have been working with other schools in Townsville (Mundingburra, Heatley and

Bohle) which helps us to better align what we do at Oonoonba with other schools so that when re-

porting is completed we can be assured that our standards are aligned to standards in other

schools. This rigor is important. We are also working through research about Visible Learning for

Literacy which helps us to better understand practices that work best to accelerate student learn-

ing.

Newly appointed Director- General of the Department of Education

Director- General, Tom Cook has taken up his new appointment and I have provided a quote from

his first newsletter to principals. Tom commenced his educational career as a Queensland state

school teacher, then worked in the Commonwealth and Victorian education departments.

“Education truly is the most transformative force in society, both for the individual students whose

futures we invest in and the society and economy to which they will contribute. All of you play your

part in delivering a world-class service, whether you work in a school or in any of the critical support

roles that are essential to the functioning of the state’s educational settings.

Over recent years, Queensland has recorded substantial improvements in state schooling perfor-

mance and improving access to high-quality early childhood education. High quality curriculum,

capable teachers, empowered leaders, and a policy and funding environment that supports educa-

tion are essential to sustaining this”.

We look forward to working under the guidance of our new Director- General.

Chappy Week

Next week from 20-27 May is Chappy week. Our Chappy Ros Parker does a great job and I would

like to take this opportunity to thank Chappy for all her work in our school in supporting families and

staff as well as programs. The federal government has recently released in the budget continued

funding for this very important program in schools. When you see Chappy don’t forget to thank her

for her work. Chappy is going to be doing some craft activities and games this week with students

who are wanting to join in.

News from Music

After many weeks of rehearsals the time has finally come for our band and strings group to perform at Fanfare this Sunday the

20th May. Our Strings group, aptly named the Fine Tuners have combined with students from Wulguru State School and will be

performing at 9am at the George Kneipp Auditorium at James Cook University. String Students will need to be there around 8am

for their 9am performance. The band students will need to be there by 3pm in the afternoon for their 4pm performance. Please

arrive in plenty of time for the students to have a warm up and settling down period. All students will need to wear blue school

shorts/skirts, black shoes with shite socks and their school music shirts. Long hair will need to be tied back neatly. String students

will get their shirts on Thursday from Ms Brown. Band students will get their music shirts when they arrive on Sunday at the

auditorium . Parents, family and friends are most welcome to stay and watch the performances. Entry is by gold coin donation. It

is highly recommended that students stay for a little while and watch other groups perform as well.. If you have any concerns or

questions, please don’t hesitate to contact your music teachers or the school.. All the best to all our students, I’m certain that you

will do Oonoonba proud.

Till next time, Yours in Music

Chappy News

This week, we had our first Breakfast Club for students undertaking the NAPLAN tests. It was wonderful to hear the excited sounds of the students enjoying the breakfast and socialising.

The Breakfast Club was funded through community donations through the “Champion your Chappy” crowdfunding website and the support of local business. We would like to thank Capital Wesleyan Methodist Church Fairfield Baptist Church, John, Tania, Del and Andrea for their financial support. We would also like to thank Woolworths Fairfield Central and Mal’s Pies & Pastries for their donations of food.
