The New Year goes off with a bang! Helping you to ring it in are beloved franchises mixed with new favourites. From the small screen comes the classic Dad’s Army, as Captain Mainwaring and the Walmington-on-Sea boys seek a spy in their midst. For animation fans, the Chipmunks’ fourth adventure in The Road Chip sees them racing cross-country to hold their fuzzy family together. And a long-awaited sequel finally takes its turn on the runway, as Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson return for Zoolander 2. Also hitting screens is the adaptation of Emma Donoghue’s bestselling novel, Room—a soul-stirring perspective on the everyday world around us that might just chase away the winter blues. Until next time!

SPACE RACEForget the great outdoors, this version of Capture the Flag is taking you to the moon and back!WORDS LEE CURTIS

RELEASE DATE 29 JANUARY / Director Enrique Gato / Starring Dani Rovira,

Michelle Jenner, Carme Calvell / Genre Animation, Adventure, Comedy

S teal the flag. Bring it back without getting caught. The first team to capture the other flag wins.

We’ve all played Capture the Flag and as a movie title it conjures up all sorts of exciting prospects: A silly summer comedy? A serious sports movie? Or even a Hunger Games-like sci-fi where young heroes play to stay alive?

Not quite. The popular outdoor game has very little to do with this animated adventure, in fact, it’s not even set on Earth!

Inspired by the 1960s space race, Capture the Flag is a family adventure that takes us out of this world and follows plucky, 12-year-old surfer, Mike Goldwing, who dreams of following in his grandfather’s footsteps as a NASA astronaut.

For the moment, he’s grounded. But, when an eccentric billionaire schemes to fly to the moon, steal its valuable resources, and destroy the American flag planted during the Apollo 11 mission, Mike takes one giant leap towards his wish by sneaking aboard the space shuttle.

Accompanied by his grandfather, best friends Amy and Marty, and his peculiar pet lizard, Mike blasts off to be the first to Capture the Flag.

TO INFINITY AND BEYOND

Spanish animation is enjoying a moment in the sun, but to Paramount Pictures this is more than a flash in the pan.

Back in 2012, Capture the Flag director Enrique Gato released Tad: The Lost Explorer, a Spanish animated feature that not only broke domestic box-office records, but went on to earn more than £40 million pounds worldwide. This remarkable success prompted Paramount to invest in the future of Spanish animation and, in an historic landmark for Spanish cinema, sign a global distribution deal for two further animated features.

Capture the Flag is the first. The second is Tad Jones: The Return of the Hero and continues the adventures of the Spanish bricklayer who became an Indiana Jones-type archaeologist/adventurer in South America.

ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS: THE ROAD CHIP

January / February 2016 17

RELEASE DATE 12 FEBRUARY / Director Walt Becker / Starring Justin

Long, Kaley Cuoco, Anna Faris / Genre Animation, Adventure, Comedy

Alvin, Simon and Theodore are no strangers to adventure. Three movies chock-full of the Chipmunks’

energetic exploits have wowed fun-loving audiences of all ages, earning the critters a special spot in not just the hearts of cinemagoers, but the box-office history books. Despite facing stiff competition from Hollywood mega-hits such as Avatar, Sherlock Holmes and I Am Legend upon the release of their previous big screen escapades, the tiny trio’s wild antics have always earned a massive amount in ticket sales ($1.147 billion worldwide to date), ensuring their repeated return to cinemas around the world. Nevertheless, Alvin and company have still got a few tricks up their red, blue, and green jumper sleeves, not to mention lots of snacks stowed in their chubby cheeks, guaranteeing the fourth instalment in the franchise will be their craziest yet. And it’ll have to be, when it goes head-to-head with Star Wars: The Force Awakens on its opening weekend in America.

The chipmunks’ long-suffering housemate and adopted “Dad” Dave has recently met Samantha, a beautiful doctor and the woman of his dreams. The trio can’t wait to meet their new mum; however, it doesn’t take long for Samantha’s pesky son Miles to start meddling with the gang’s minds, convincing them that once Dave’s married, he’ll dump his furry companions forever. Desperate to save their family and facing the prospect of gaining a horrid stepbrother, the Chipmunks form an alliance with the

shifty Miles to stop Dave’s proposal. To put their plan into action, the brothers-to-be must race hundreds of miles to Miami, and Alvin hasn’t been keeping up with his driving lessons.

Alongside Miles, the Chipmunks must board planes, trains, automobiles and the odd boat to reach their destination before Dave drops to one knee, flashes the carats, and pops the question to Samantha. Unfortunately the accident-prone animals quickly reveal why many airlines have a no rodent policy, and garner the attention of bumbling air marshal Benson. Many other faces will pop up throughout the exhilarating journey as a diverse cast including Bella Thorne and Kaley Cuoco join Jason Lee, Matthew Gray Gubler, Jesse McCartney, and Justin Long for the bumpy ride.

The musical talents of the Chipmunks are already infamous. Their “unique” vocals aren’t to everybody’s taste but Christmas wouldn’t be the same without the high-pitched “The Chipmunk Song” echoing through the seasonal air. Now, the musical trio have added a few more modern party anthems to their repertoire and they’re not afraid to unveil them when the time is right. From “Uptown Funk” to “Baby Got Back”, the Munks and their sisters in swing, the Chipettes, will undoubtedly once again take to the stage to unleash their musical stylings upon unsuspecting audiences.

Remember, it’s not the size of the chipmunk in the fight, but rather the size of the fight in the chipmunk, and whether they’re doing battle at the box-office or fighting to keep their unconventional family together, Alvin, Simon, and Theodore are giants. They may be small in stature, but their latest voyage won’t disappoint children who share their wonderful sense of humour and fondness for adventure—it may even surprise some mums, dads, brothers, and sisters.

THE STORY SO FAR…

ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS (2007)After their tree is cut down and carted off to Los Angeles, the Chipmunks find themselves inside the home of struggling songwriter Dave. Despite wrecking his home, Alvin, Simon, and Theodore unite with Dave to make awesome music and defeat an evil record company executive.

ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS: THE SQUEAKQUEL (2009)The Chipmunks return to school. Tasked with saving music classes by winning the $25,000 prize in a battle of the bands, the trio take on rival girl band the Chipettes, leading to romantic sparks and all-out musical war.

ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS: CHIPWRECKED (2011)When a luxury cruise carrying Dave, the Chipmunks, and the Chipettes takes an unexpected detour to an uncharted tropical island, the fuzzy collective must find their way back to civilization with the help of a mysterious ally.

SHOW ME A HERO

Forget everything you know about superheroes.Deadpool has arrived and this wise-cracking, gun-toting,

rule-book-throwing anti-hero is rewriting the script.WORDS LOUISE HARROLD

RELEASE DATE 4 FEBRUARY / Director Tim Miller / Starring Ryan Reynolds, Morena

Baccarin, T.J. Miller / Genre Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

S uperhero movies are hot property and there’s nobody bigger than Marvel Comics.

It’s almost impossible to imagine someone unfamiliar with Iron Man or Captain America. Even the smallest Marvel heroes are getting the big screen treatment these days. But there’s one comic book character, just as beloved, whose presence has been ignored for far too long, and he’s grown tired of waiting in the wings.

Until now, Marvel has been all about the do-gooders, saving humanity from alien invasions,

guarding galaxies, and protecting the Earth from evil robotic overlords. Deadpool doesn’t play by those rules and Marvel have finally let him loose.

Chaotic, irreverent, and bloody, Deadpool brings viewers far from the family-friendly fare they’ve come to expect. This is the origin story of how Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds) transformed from a smart-mouthed, cancer-stricken military dropout to an awesome mercenary antihero with accelerated healing powers.

Armed with new abilities, a kick-ass alter ego, and a dark and twisted sense of humour, Deadpool isn’t the hero anybody deserves, but he might just be the unique antihero a saturated and almost stale superhero genre needs right about now.

DEADPOOL

THE ‘MERC WITH THE MOUTH’Fast-talking and incessant wise-cracking earned him this nickname in the comics and his famous humour and pop culture references are arguably his most prominent attributes.

BREAKING THE FOURTH WALLBecame hugely popular due to his habit of breaking the fourth wall and acknowledging the reader directly; this characteristic plays a key part of a very self-referential film.

MULTI-SKILLED One ability isn’t enough. Deadpool can regenerate from injury, perform incredible acrobatics, is proficient at martial arts, and wields every kind of weapon.

GOOD OR BAD? Walking the line between hero and villain makes Deadpool impossible to predict and this ambiguity gives him free reign to do just about whatever he feels like.

1944. The Allies are poised to invade France and topple the German Army. But in

Walmington-on-Sea, there’s a spy on the loose. With victory suddenly in jeopardy, it’s fallen to a troop of elderly volunteers and one stupid boy to keep calm, carry on, and win the war. We’re doomed!

Don’t panic, this is Britain’s most cherished army and they’ve been defending our shores, albeit haphazardly, for decades.

The bumbling men of Dad’s Army have entertained millions

since 1968, and their laugh-out-loud comedy and farcical shenanigans have been rejuvenated by a vibrant, all-star cast who are hauling the treasured characters out of retirement for one last hurrah.

In contrast to the iconic BBC sitcom, director Oliver Parker is bringing Britain’s brilliant women to the front. Having only been alluded to in all 80 television episodes, Captain Mainwaring’s endlessly patient wife is finally revealed and leading a platoon of her own. Unfortunately, her all-female branch of the Auxiliary Territorial Service is as equally inept as her husband’s. In an extraordinary war effort, the two units must unite and conquer their shortcomings to catch the spy that threatens Britain’s victory.

Panda-moniumPo’s back! With more pandas, a long-lost

father, and a new villain, DreamWorks are raising the stakes to ensure Kung Fu Panda 3 has everybody kung fu fighting.

WORDS LEE CURTIS

RELEASE DATE 11 MARCH / Directors Alessandro Carloni,

Jennifer Yuh / Starring Jack Black,

Angelina Jolie, Dustin Hoffman / Genre Animation, Adventure, Comedy

O ver the course of two epic films, Po has blossomed from clumsy

oaf to kung fu warrior, believing he’s the only panda to survive the devastating massacre that separated him from his family. But at the end of Kung Fu Panda 2, he discovered a remote mountainside valley where a village of pandas and Po’s father still lives.

The third instalment of the action-comedy series sees father and son reunited after many years

apart and journeying together to the picturesque panda paradise.

But their happy reunion is short-lived.

A new enemy has arisen and he’s more powerful than anything that’s come before. Armed with an ability to steal power from those he defeats, the supernatural bull Kai is intent on destroying every kung fu master and has his sights set on the newly crowned Dragon Warrior.

No matter how you look at it, vanquishing a threat of this magnitude isn’t something Po can do alone, so expect panda-monium in the franchise’s biggest film yet as kung fu master becomes kung fu teacher to create an army of skilled fighters from an assortment of bumbling, but well-meaning pandas.

NAME: POSPECIES: GIANT PANDAOCCUPATION: KUNG FU MASTERVOICED BY: JACK BLACK

Despite his status as the legendary Dragon Warrior, Po is the same humble, exuberant, noodle-slurping panda who was causing havoc as an apprentice noodle maker in his adoptive father’s shop. Ever the fan boy, he’s just as likely to gawk at his opponent’s fighting skills as he is to dish them out himself.

OCCUPATION:

FARMER/FATHER

VOICED BY: BRYAN CRANSTON

Imagine Po without the

kung fu discipline and you

have the panda he’d have

grown up to be. Po’s clumsy,

simple-minded, fun-loving

old man is always out for a

good time, but only when

he’s not napping or eating.

THE BIG SHORT

This Big Short is a long-time passion project for renowned comedy director Adam McKay, who departs the silliness of his previous films—Anchorman, Step Brothers, and The Other Guys—for a far more serious venture.

But however business-like, The Big Short is far from humourless. In fact, you can expect an equally irreverent experience with eccentric characters, celebrity cameos, and even Jenga as a plot device. How many financial dramas can boast that?

When four outsiders saw what the big banks, media and government refused to, the global collapse of the economy, they had an idea: The Big Short. Their bold investment leads them into the dark underbelly of modern banking where they must question everyone and everything. Based on the true story and best-selling book by Michael Lewis (The Blind Side, Moneyball), and directed by Adam Mckay (Anchorman, Step Brothers) The Big Short stars Christian Bale, Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling and Brad Pitt.
