Goals of the Online Seminar

Provide students with an environment where the skills and competencies necessary to work in an international context will be developed.

Be a practical project management course where students will define precisely their projects, the digital treatment that will be used, plan tasks and milestones and produce and test the content.

The frontiers of Europe

Europe had many frontiers: from the Adrian Wall to the string of watchtowers along the Salentine coast,  from the Limes Germanicus to the moving medieval frontier of Christianity in Iberia, to the idea of a Finisterra.

All these limits, material and immaterial, are part of a common European Heritage and reveal the shifting conceptions of where a certain culture, or civilization, ended and "something else" began.

The aim of the project is to show, through digital and interactive media, how Europe's external frontier varied over time and how the traces of this evolution are still present today.

Dual dimension

• a common nucleus, which will present information at the continental scale (for instance, the various external borders of the various continental entities that existed in history)

• and a growing set of local nucleus, or sub-projects, which will explore in more detail a certain region or a certain "frontier moment".

Groups

• Two groups in Turku, two groups in Coimbra.

• At each institution one group will contribute for the common nucleus the other to a local subject.

Phases

• Phase 1: – General introduction of the concept

and to the processes of creating and executing a multimedia project. (17-23 November)

– Registration in the Project management platform.

• Phase 2: – Students scope the specific

projects, either related to the common nucleus or to local projects. (24-30 November)

– Outcome: project proposals (1-2p.)

• Phase 3: – Students develop the projects,

necessarily small

– (from the 1st of December until close to the end of the semester).

Next Steps

• Organize two groups of 4 elements.

• Decide which group will work on the common nucleus and which will work on the local content.

• Login in the project management site.

• Read chapters 1-8 of the text book.

• Work on a 2-3 p. Proposal for each group (check chap.4 of the text book)
