Pronoun

Dear Friends at St. David’s,

Martin Luther believed one of the boldest statements we make as Christians is when we say “our Father” - that we hold that the Lord and Creator of all is NOT just “a Father,” but that we dare to call God “our Father.” When you think about it, it’s amazing how one little posses-sive pronoun can dramatically change how we look at something. And I think the same is true for “our worship services” - that it’s NOT just “the worship service,” but it’s “ours” … it belongs to all of us.

As a sign of this shared ownership, we offer a variety of roles and ways to help lead our worship - Ushers, Greeters, Assisting Ministers, Communion Assistants, & Lectors. And in the coming weeks, we’ll be holding several “Review / Intro Sessions.” The goal of these brief gatherings is for experienced worship leaders to “check in” and share “tricks of the trade,” as well as for potential new worship leaders to get a sense of this area of service.

How might you help serve? If you can welcome people with a smile, you could be a greeter. If you can lovingly offer a cup of grace to a stranger, you could help with Communion. If you’re currently reading this, you’ve already cleared the biggest hurdle to being a lector. It’s not brain surgery. It’s helping lead worship … “our worship” … and that one little possessive pronoun means a lot.

“Burned Biscuits”

When I was a kid, my Mom liked to make breakfast food for din-

ner every now and then. And I remember one night in particular

when she had made breakfast after a long, hard day at work. On

that evening so long ago, my Mom placed a plate of eggs, sau-

sage and extremely burned biscuits in front of my Dad. I remem-

ber waiting to see if anyone noticed! Yet all my Dad did was

reach for his biscuit, smile at my Mom and ask me how my day

was at school. I don't remember what I told him that night, but I

do remember watching him smear butter and jelly on that biscuit

and eat every bite!

When I got up from the table that

evening, I remember hearing my

Mom apologize to my Dad for burn-

ing the biscuits. And I'll never forget

what he said: "Honey, I love burned

biscuits."

Later that night, I went to kiss Daddy good night and I asked him

if he really liked his biscuits burned. He wrapped me in his arms

and said, "Your Momma put in a hard day at work today and

she's real tired. And besides – a little burned biscuit never hurt

anyone!"

Life is full of imperfect things and imperfect people. I'm not the

best at hardly anything, and I forget birthdays and anniversaries

just like everyone else. But what I've learned over the years is

that learning to accept each other's faults - and choosing to cele-

brate each other's differences - is one of the most important keys

to creating a healthy, growing, and lasting relationship.

And that's my prayer for you today. That you will learn to take the

good, the bad, and the ugly parts of your life and lay them at the

feet of God. Because in the end, He's the only One who will be

able to give you a relationship where a burnt biscuit isn't a deal-

breaker!

St. David’s Preschool News

What a wonderful 6 weeks of camp was had by all who attended. Overall, we have had 50+

children pass through our doors, engaging in

making new friends, learning together, and play-

ing together in many fun-filled activities we of-

fered here at St. David’s Preschool Camp.

Our last day was celebrated with the Ice Cream Man coming to our camp with his truck

filled with many delicious ice cream treats to

offer….YUM!

September 9th is the day that St. David’s Pre-school will be buzzing with excitement, as our

Tiny Tots, Nursery & Pre-K children start the

new year. An opening gathering is scheduled

for 10:00 am in the Chapel. Along with Pastor

Micah, we would like to welcome you all. Look-

ing forward to a wonderful, exciting year.

Our Life Together at St. David’s

Council Highlights:

Summer Events: It’s been a fun and event-

ful summer at St. David’s, and please check out

the photos in this newsletter to see a few of the

many wonderful memories made. A special

thanks to Gary Naylor, David Lynam, Jim Sheri-

dan and the Stewardship Committee (for the LI

Ducks Game & BBQ), Keith & Jane Ryan and

the Evangelism Committee (for the Massapequa

Street Fair), and to Janis Garone and the Fellow-

ship Committee (for the Outdoor Worship &

Church Picnic), as well as to all those who came

and took part in our community’s life together this

summer.

2019-20 Worship Schedule: Over 50+

responses were submitted to our worship survey;

and we received many good suggestions and

affirmations. After evaluating and discussing the

responses, the Church Council decided to contin-

ue with the current schedule for the coming year,

with 2 services on Sunday - 10 a.m. & 4 p.m.

With the consolidated Sunday morning service,

we hope to continue to put our best foot forward

each week with Children’s sermons, choir an-

thems, and a fuller worshipping community.

With the Sunday afternoon service, we hope to

continue to offer a smaller, more intimate option,

as well as periodic “special services,” like our

Service of Prayers for Healing & Wholeness.
