A NOTE FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

Dear friend of Olney Theatre Center,

Even if you’re not a producer like I am, I dare you to get through “The King of Broadway,” the glorious opening number of The Producers, without cracking a smile. Like the entirety of this deliriously funny show, it’s more than a valentine to show biz; it’s a big fat bearhug to it, from the highs to the lows to the really really lows. Even those of us who work in nonprofit theater don’t have it quite as bad as poor Max Bialystock, who produces the sure-fire flop Springtime for Hitler, only to see it turn into an unexpected mega-hit that lands him in prison. “You’ve heard of ‘theatre in the round’? You’re looking at the man who invented ‘theatre in the square’! Nobody had a good seat!” he croons, longing for the good old days.

The Producers began in what some call the good old days, as Mel Brooks’ 1968 movie starring the inimitable Zero Mostel and Gene Wilder. If you remember it, then you know that it’s a paean to a different time, and a very different medium. The movie achieved cult-hit status, but as great as it was, I believe the musical is even

better. Brooks’ adaptation of the film is pure comic genius, from its brilliant musical-theater shtick to its Broadway-satirizing dance numbers. The Producers won a record-breaking 12 Tony Awards in 2001 because it comes to vivid life on stage, where the audience can share the joy with the actors.

Given its immense popularity, I’m not sure why there hasn’t been a resident professional production of The Producers here since the National Tour came through more than ten years ago, but I suspect it’s because getting the right actors to pull this off isn’t easy. That’s why I’m so proud of this production, headlined by Michael Kostroff (best known to us in the region for his five seasons on The Wire, but more importantly an esteemed music-theater legend across the country) and Broadway veteran Jason Graae as the sumptuous Roger DeBris.

And of course, I’m proud of the production because it’s helmed by three of our favorite creatives: director Mark Waldrop and choreographer Tara Jeanne Vallee (the Artistic Associates behind The Little Mermaid and The King and I, among others) and music director Darius Smith. These folks, working with this enormously talented cast, are going to begin the theater’s 77th summer with a huge, hilarious bang.

I hope we’ll see you at the end of the summer with the start of our 2015-16 season, Noël Coward’s Hay Fever. But before you head off for vacation, please drop me a line at [email protected] and let me know what you’ve enjoyed this season, and what you’re hoping to see next year.

Onward!

THE pRODUCERS SCENES AND MUSICAL NUMBERS - ACT I

The Olney Theatre Center 2015 Season isDedicated to the Memory of William H. Graham, Sr.

William H. Graham, Sr. was a leader, mentor, director, performer, and a tireless advocate for the performing arts during his more than fifty-year association with Olney Theatre Center. Bill played several roles during his time at Olney Theatre, from Mainstage actor and director for the National Players, to General Manager and most recently as President Emeritus of our Board of Directors.

To pay tribute to his many contributions to Olney Theatre and the National Players, we dedicate the 2015 season to him. We remember Bill in all we do, and we invite you to honor his legacy by making a contribution to the William H. Graham, Sr. Fund supporting mentorship and FREE Summer Shakespeare at Olney Theatre Center.

To donate, go to olneytheatre.org/support.

My first experience with the Olney Theatre Center was probably 20 years ago when a friend brought me to see a performance. While I don’t remember which play that was, my experience left me with the sense that this theater was a real Maryland treasure. Of course, my sense was right – and at the time, I did not even know that our theatre had been designated as one of two Maryland State Theaters. Five years ago, I joined the Board of Directors at the Olney Theatre. It was then that I met so many of the incredible people that work tirelessly behind and in front of the scenes. It was very clear that this community cared so much about the mission of the theater – to produce fantastic shows that entertain all from age 5 to 105 and, through the National Players touring company, bring theater to those who may not otherwise have the opportunity to see live theater. It shows. I’m always in awe of the performers, the incredible sets and costumes,

and the fact that with just a few weeks of rehearsal, a show can come together so beautifully. The staff who work the long hours to put the shows on, sell tickets, manage the house and concessions, raise money, pay the bills, and manage the theater all clearly love the Olney Theatre Center and the community of which they are a part. I know this business is not easy, but the dedicated Olney Theatre Center community sure makes it look that way.

CONTEXT GUIDE Although Mel Brooks is best known for his feature films, as a child he dreamed first of being a garment salesman, and then of working in the theatre. Between that dream — sparked by watching Ethel Merman in Anything Goes — and his Broadway hit The Producers came World War II, success as a Borscht Belt performer and TV writer, and the films that established him as a master of comedy. Although The Producers first came to life as a film in 1968, its showbiz satire was rooted in Brooks’ love for and experience with Broadway. Looking back at its origins, The Producers’ arrival in 2001 as a Broadway musical seems like a homecoming. The Producers’ story came from an amalgamation of people Brooks worked with in the theater, but he wasn’t sure what form best suited it. He was a successful TV writer by the time he started writing The Producers in 1962, but he also had work on Broadway as far back as 1952. After writing a short piece in New Faces of 1952, Brooks returned to Broadway in the books of musicals Shinbone Alley (1957, co-written with Joe Darion) and All American (1962). Brooks began writing The Producers soon after All American, experimenting with the story as a novel and a play before deciding to write it for the silver screen. The Producers reveled in laughing at its own community, but Brooks’ ambitions reached beyond that; for Brooks, comedy is “the only weapon [he’s] got” to fight the memory of Hitler. The screenplay originally shared a title with its fictional musical, the source of its satire and its controversy: “Springtime for Hitler.” When real-life producers — not hoping for a flop — balked, the name changed, but Brooks’ goals did not. “It’s been one of my lifelong jobs — to make the world laugh at Adolf Hitler,” he later said. By focusing on the Nazis rather than the suffering they caused, Brooks could diminish their legacy without trivializing the experiences of their victims. As Robert Brustein wrote, “Nobody can touch Brooks when it comes to letting the air out of evil icons... generally by exposing how much they have in common with showbiz.” Twenty-three years after World War II, not everyone was ready to laugh at Hitler and some took offense at the film — ironically, the response its heroes hope for in the story. But the passage of time and the move from screen to stage have both been kind to The Producers. The stage adaptation, suggested by entertainment mogul David Geffen, features music and lyrics by Mel Brooks and a book co-written with Thomas Meehan (Annie, Hairspray). When The Producers hit Broadway in 2001, it was met with a record number of Tony wins and record ticket sales. The Producers has found a home in the theater, where it makes us laugh at the business we love, at our enemies, and at ourselves.

A NOTE FROM THE MANAGING DIRECTOR

Welcome to “Summer at Olney.” Although no longer a summer stock theater, summertime at Olney is still the most wonderful, most active, and most special time of the year. As we open The Producers, we also welcome the National Players Tour 67, a new group of 10 early-career actors who will rehearse and perform on our campus before taking their three repertory productions on the road. Don’t miss A Midsummer Night’s Dream (on the Root Family Stage), Julius Caesar (in the Historic Theatre), and also in the Historic, A Tale of Two Cities, a new adaptation by Benjamin Kingsland (Olney’s first play commission).

Beginning this month, we welcome the 2015-16 Apprentice Class, 16 emerging theater professionals who will gain invaluable experience over the next 12 months.

On July 25th, the theatre’s 77th birthday, we will hold our first annual OTC Fest, a full-day open house where the community will get to see what it’s like to be onstage, backstage, upside down and inside out of Olney Theatre. If you’ve ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes at Olney Theatre, come to OTC Fest! There will be so much do for folks of all ages including a moon bounce, face painting, clown

workshops, dance classes, free performances, food, drinks, theater tours, cast meet and greets, costume shop sale, birthday cake, and for the very first time: movies in the Historic!

On September 19th, we will hold our Annual Gala: A Night in Havana, Under the Stars at Olney Theatre. I hope you will join us for this very special evening when we raise critical funds for important artist, production and education programs.

And, at summer’s end—a beginning: we will start our 2015-16 season with a production of Noël Coward’s Hay Fever.

So… no lazy days of summer here! We are ready for action and look forward to sharing it all with you.

See you at the theater,

Debbie Ellinghaus Managing Director [email protected]

During her first pregnancy, Meredith endured painful fibroids, ultimately delivering by C-section. Her fibroids returned when she became pregnant again. An avid runner, Meredith didn’t want another C-section, so with plenty of support and careful monitoring, her team of obstetricians was able to deliver her second baby naturally. Now, even with two little ones, Meredith is back to running.

With a focus on all areas of health care, MedStar Montgomery Medical Center has the skillful, caring specialists to help you through it all.

We have four convenient OB/GYN locations: Gaithersburg, Mt. Airy, Olney, and Silver Spring.

Visit MedStarMontgomery.org/Meredith to see Meredith’s full story. Call 855-546-1931 to make an appointment with one of our OB/GYNs.
