GAME 13: OKLAHOMA AT IOWA STATE GAME NOTES

SUNDAY'S GAME BASICSThe Sooners (5-7, 0-1 Big 12) head to Iowa State in search of their first Big 12 win this season. OU has won in their last two trips to Ames and is 11-15 all-time against the Cyclones in Hilton Coliseum (5-9 in the Big 12 era). Iowa State (7-5, 1-0 Big 12) enters Sunday's game after topping Kansas, 71-69, on Thursday night in overtime. The Cyclones have won four straight games and are 6-1 at Hilton Coliseum this year.

Sunday's game will be streamed on Cyclones.tv with Rich Fellingham and Molly Parrott on the call. The contest will also air on the Sooner Radio Network with Ed Murray and McKenna Treece calling the action.

GAME 12 RECAP: TEXASu Lashann Higgs scored a career-high 25 points and No. 8 Texas won at Oklahoma for the first time since the 2009-10 season, beating the Sooners 88-78 on Thursday night in the Big 12 Conference opener for both teams.

u Oklahoma had won its last 12 Big 12 openers and is now 19-3 in such games under coach Sherri Coale. The Sooners' last loss in their league opener was on Jan. 5, 2005, at Texas Tech.

u Shaina Pellington scored 16 points and Ana Llanusa and Maddie Manning each added 14 to lead the Sooners. Texas led 26-13 after the first quarter and 41-24 at halftime. By that point, Oklahoma already had committed 11 turnovers -- more than twice as many as Texas.

u Oklahoma pulled within 12 twice early in the third quarter and was within 62-49 after Vionise Pierre-Louis hit two free throws with 9:25 left, but Texas' Ariel Atkins converted a three-point play, then hit a 3-pointer to rebuild Texas' lead to 19 points. Llanusa's basket with 37 seconds left got Oklahoma within 84-76, but two late baskets by Jada Underwood -- her only points of the game -- gave Texas some late cushion.

PREVIEWING IOWA STATEu Iowa State boasts a 7-5 overall record and opened Big 12 play with a 71-69 overtime win at home against Kansas Thursday. The Cyclones rank seventh in the Big 12 in scoring offense at 72.1 points per game, but lead the conference with 9.3 3-pointers made per game. Iowa State is also third in the league and ranks 15th in Division I with 5.7 blocks per game. The Cyclones are shooting .415 from the field (ninth in the Big 12), .369 from 3-point range (fourth) and .746 at the free throw line (second).

u Junior guard Bridget Carleton, a first-team All-Big 12 selection last season, averages a team-high 19.0 points per game this season. Carleton is the only player in a Power 5 conference to average at least 19.0 points, 7.0 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game this year. The junior has scored in double figures in all 12 games for the Cyclones and led Iowa State with 30 points in Thursday's overtime win over Kansas. Senior guard Emily Durr (9.5 ppg) and freshman forward Madison Wise (9.4 ppg) rank second and third respectively on the team in scoring this season.

u Iowa State head coach Bill Fennelly is 472-241 in his 23 seasons with the Cyclones. Fennelly has led the Cyclones to 17 NCAA Tournaments and five Sweet 16 appearances.

GUARD THE ARCu Iowa State and Oklahoma have been two of the top 3-point shooting teams in the Big 12 era. The Sooners and Cyclones have both made at least 200 3-pointers in each of the last seven seasons -- two of 11 programs in Division I to accomplish that feat.

Those players are: Whitney Hand (2012-13), Aaryn Ellenberg (2013-14), Morgan Hook (2013-14), Nicole Griffin (2013-14) and Sharane Campbell-Olds (2014-15), Kaylon Williams (2015-16) and Peyton Little (2016-17).

SCORING IN BUNCHESu Oklahoma has had 10 different 20-point scoring performances from five different players through 12 games. During the 2016-17 season, the Sooners had just 15 20-point scoring performances in 33 games.

u OU is the only team in the Big 12 this to have five different players with at least one 20-point scoring performances. The Sooners are also just one o three programs in the league (TCU and West Virginia) with two 30-point performances by two different players (32, Vionise Pierre-Louis at No. 10 Oregon; 31, Gabbi Ortiz vs. No. 16 South Florida).

ORTIZ PLAYING TO HER STRENGTHSu The transition from moving to off the ball from point guard seems to be paying off for senior Gabbi Ortiz. Ortiz is averaging a career-best 14.4 points a game, while shooting .432 from beyond the arc. The Racine, Wis., native ranks fifth in school history with 172 career triples and needs just three more treys to pass Etta Maytubby (173, 1993-96) for fourth in the program's record book.

u Against South Florida on Dec. 9, Ortiz had a career day by scoring 31 points on 9-of-14 shooting and knocking down a career-best eight 3-pointers. Ortiz's 31 points were also a career high, smashing her previous career high of 22 points against UTSA in 2015.

u The senior followed up performance against USF with another strong outing versus New Mexico, scoring 25 points on 8-of-15 shooting, while burying seven treys. She became the first Sooner to score 25 points in back-to-back games since Aaryn Ellenberg accomplished the feat in 2014.

u Ortiz also leads the Big 12 in minutes played per game (37.0), free throw percentage (.962) and 3-pointers made per game (3.4). The senior is 19th in the nation with 41 made 3-pointers and 27th in the country in minutes played per game.

ALLOW ME TO INTRODUCE MYSELFu OU’s freshman trio of Ana Llanusa, Shaina Pellington and Mandy Simpson have excelled in the Sooners' first 12 games. Llanusa, who has scored in double figures eight times this season, enjoyed a breakout performance against New Mexico on Dec. 16 by scoring 27 points on 9-of-22 shooting, which is tied for tenth on OU's freshmen single-game scoring list. The Choctaw, Okla., native picked up her first Big 12 Freshman of the Week award for her performance.

u Llanusa's 27 points were the most by an OU freshman in a non-conference game since Aaryn Ellenberg scored 31 at Ohio State in 2010. In her first Big 12 contest, Llanusa added 14 points in 26 minutes.

u Pellington, the fourth Canadian to play for the Sooners, is averaging 12.1 points per game and is shooting .527 from the field. Pellngton has shined in OU's six road games, averaging 13.3 points per game and shooting .542 from the field. The freshman led OU with 16 points on 7-of-9 shooting Thursday against Texas.

u Simpson has provided the Sooners with a consistent rebounder in her first season at OU. The Boise, Idaho, native pulled down a career-high 12 rebounds against New Mexico. Simpson started the first eight games of the seasons and became just the 10th true freshman to start a season opener under Sherri Coale.

u Simpson recorded eight points in OU's Big 12 opener against Texas, the second-most points scored by the freshman in one game this year. Against Belmont, Simpson filled the stat sheet with 12 points, five rebounds and three steals in OU's 96-73 victory to earn Big 12 Freshman of the Week honors.

PRESENCE IN THE POSTu Vionise Pierre-Louis has continued to improve each year at OU and the senior is putting up career numbers so far during the 2017-18 season. The senior is ninth in the country with a .639 shooting percentage, while leading OU in scoring (15.1) and rebounding (8.3).

u Pierre-Louis is on pace to lead the Sooners in blocked shots for the fourth straight season, joining LaNae Jones (1993-96), Nicole Griffin (2011-14) and Courtney Paris (2006-09) as the only players to accomplish the feat in program history.

PENZO FINDS HER ROLEu Gileysa Penzo has made her impact in the last four games by serving as OU's key distributor in its offense. The redshirt junior dished a career-high 11 assists in OU's victory over New Mexico on Dec. 16, becoming the first Sooner to recorded 10-plus assists in a single game since 2013 (10, Morgan Hook at UCLA).

u Over the last four games, Penzo is averaging 5.5 assists per game in 31.0 minutes per contest which has helped the Sooners increase their assists output. OU has registered 67 assists on 122 made field goals (60 percent) over the last four games. In the first eight contests of the season, 41 percent of OU's made field goals were accompanied by an assist.

GUESS WHO'S BACK, BACK AGAIN ...u Maddie Manning is back for the Sooners after receiving a sixth-year of eligibility prior to the start of the 2017-18 season. Manning was granted another year of eligibility after missing the first two seasons of her collegiate career due to ACL surgery.

u The graduate student guard has scored in double figures 10 times in 12 games. She filled the stat sheet with 14 points, five rebound and a season-high five steals versus Texas on Thursday.

u Manning's experience has been key for OU to start the 2017-18 season. She is averaging 13.2 points and 5.8 rebounds per contest. She also leads OU in steals per game with 1.8 a contest.

u Last season, Manning led the Sooners in scoring with 12.6 points per game and earned All-Big 12 Second Team honors. A year ago, Manning led the Big 12 in steals per game at 2.4 per contest and was first among OU players in 3-point shooting percentage with a .397 clip.

QUICK HITSu Oklahoma has played seven top-50 RPI opponents in its first 12 games according to RealTimeRPI.com. The Sooners trail only UConn and Notre Dame for the most top-50 opponents faced to begin the season.

u LaNesia William's eight points against Texas set a career high against a Big 12 foe for the senior.

u Shaina Pellington is currently on pace to finish the season on OU's top-10 list for field goal percentage by a freshman. The Pickering, Ontario, native is shooting .527 from the field, which would rank sixth on OU's freshman records list. Pellington's .527 field goal percentage leads all Big 12 freshmen this season.

u The Sooners tied the program record for 3-point field goal attempts in a single game against New Mexico on Dec. 16, taking 38 shots from deep. OU knocked down 15 treys in the victory, which is tied for the second most in a single game in program history.

u OU's 36 points scored in the third quarter against New Mexico set a program record for most points in a quarter. The 42-point win was OU's largest margin of victory since Nov. 21, 2014, against Bradley, 104-55.

u The Sooners' victory over South Florida on Dec. 9 gave OU its first win as unranked team over a ranked non-conference opponent on its home floor in school history. It marked the first time the Sooners have defeated a ranked non-conference foe since 2013 when OU topped No. 25 Gonzaga inside Lloyd Noble Center.

u Gabbi Ortiz's run of consecutive made free throws came to an end against South Florida. Ortiz's streak ended at 37, which ranks second all-time at OU, after missing her second attempt of the game at foul line against the Bulls. LaNeisha Caufield's streak of 38 consecutive free throws made during the 2001-02 season is the program record.

u Oklahoma’s non-conference schedule included matchups against five NCAA Tournament teams from last season (Belmont, DePaul, Oregon, UConn and South Florida). Nine of the Sooners' 11 non-conference opponents made postseason appearances last year.

u OU reached the 20-win plateau for the 12th time in the last 13 seasons under head coach Sherri Coale a year ago.The Sooners have won at least 20 games 15 times during Coale's tenture.

UP NEXTu The Sooners return home on Thursday to face TCU inside Lloyd Noble Center. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. CT and the game will be televised on Fox Sports Oklahoma. OU leads the all-time series with the Horned Frogs, 21-4, and is 13-0 against TCU in Norman.
