Mission
September 7, 2011 6
BORSTAR is built upon the longstanding practices of the U.S. Border Patrol providing aid to those in distress. The BORSTAR concept was formally initiated in 1998 in response to increasing incidents involving injured agents and inadequate response capabilities. The bi-national Border Safety Initiative (BSI) also played a key role in the initiation of this specialized unit.
BORSTAR proved to be an invaluable and unique resource, and as the unit evolved it was fully integrated into the Border Patrol’s National Strategy.
There are currently between 200-300 active deployable BORSTAR agents nationwide which are specially equipped and trained to locate, access, stabilize, and transport victims to areas accessible to advanced emergency medical services.

BORSTAR is a law enforcement/search and rescue (SAR) team capable of rapid deployment throughout the nation in support of the Border Patrol’s National Strategy.
The creation of BORSTAR in 1998 was in direct response to an increase in injured agents, distressed migrants and reduced medical access in remote areas along the Southwest border.Today, the expansion and increased resources of BORSTAR continue to illustrate CBP and the U.S. Border Patrol’s commitment to safety and the preservation of human life.
