I Won’t Back DownBy: Tom Petty

Well I won't back down, no I won't back downYou could stand me up at the gates of hell

But I won't back down

Gonna stand my ground, won't be turned aroundAnd I'll keep this world from draggin' me downGonna stand my ground and I won't back down

[Chorus:]Hey baby, there ain't no easy way out

Hey I will stand my groundAnd I won't back down

Well I know what's right, I got just one lifeIn a world that keeps on pushin' me around

But I'll stand my ground and I won't back down

Hey baby there ain't no easy way outHey I will stand my ground

And I won't back downNo, I won't back down

Before the Odyssey: Trojan War

The Trojan War is set before the Odyssey and was a war between the Greeks and Trojans. This was a long and tough war which eventually ended with the Greeks deploying the famous Trojan War. Odysseus was well known for being a war hero for Greece. The war lasted 10 years because neither side would give up or back down.

This song is about never giving up and standing your ground. Throughout the song he keeps pushing the theme of not backing down. He even says “You can stand me up at the gates of hell. But I won't back down.” This line shows how much he cares about standing up for things and not giving up.

This songs theme is just like the attitude of the soldiers in the Trojan War. Neither side ever really gave up until the Greeks with the help of Odysseus and Athena came up with the idea of the trojan horse. They never gave up or backed down because they did not want to disgrace their home. Both sides has tons of motivation and wouldn’t ever back down.

Odyssey: Part I - “Calypso, The Sweet Nymph”

Odysseus’ last stop before home during his journey was a stay with Calypso. He stays with her for seven years and eventually it starts to take a toll on him. He starts to greatly miss his home but just can’t leave. He realizes that he hasn’t been staying completely loyal to Penelope and reflects on this. Athena eventually comes for him and he can finally return home.

This song is about P. Diddy (Sean Combs) and how his life has fallen apart and he is trying to get everything back together. He wants to “come home” literally and figuratively and make “a house a home.” Like Odysseus he has had a hard time being himself he even says “It's easy to be Puff but it's harder to be Sean” (Puff being one of his rapper names and Sean being his real name) What he means by this is that a lot of the time he doesn’t act like himself and does things he regrets. In the intro Skylar Grey who is featured on the song says “I know my kingdom awaits and they've forgiven my mistakes” this line has two meanings. The one that most relates to Odysseus is that Diddy hopes that people will forgive him for what he’s done very similar to Odysseus worrying about coming home after being so unfaithful.

The songs tone and mood is very similar to this part of the story too. It’s about having made mistakes but wanting to make it up and become closer with family and friends again. Odyssey like Diddy has made mistakes along his trip but just wants to make it back home and make everything right again.

Fresh Prince of Bel-Air Theme SongBy: DJ Jazzy Jeff ft Will Smith

Now, this is a story all about howMy life got flipped-turned upside down

And I'd like to take a minuteJust sit right there

I'll tell you how I became the prince of a town called Bel Air

In west Philadelphia born and raisedOn the playground was where I spent most of

my daysChillin' out maxin' relaxin' all cool

And all shootin some b-ball outside of the school

When a couple of guys who were up to no good

Started making trouble in my neighborhoodI got in one little fight and my mom got scaredShe said 'You're movin' with your auntie and

uncle in Bel Air'

I begged and pleaded with her day after dayBut she packed my suit case and sent me on

my wayShe gave me a kiss and then she gave me my

ticket.I put my Walkman on and said, 'I might as

well kick it'. First class, yo this is badDrinking orange juice out of a champagne

glass. Is this what the people of Bel-Air living like?

Hmmmmm this might be alright.

But wait I hear they're prissy, bourgeois, all that

Is this the type of place that they just send this cool cat?

I don't think soI'll see when I get there

I hope they're prepared for the prince of Bel-Air

Well, the plane landed and when I came outThere was a dude who looked like a cop

standing there with my name outI ain't trying to get arrested yet

I just got hereI sprang with the quickness like lightning,

disappeared

I whistled for a cab and when it came nearThe license plate said fresh and it had dice

in the mirrorIf anything I could say that this cab was

rareBut I thought 'Nah, forget it' - 'Yo, homes to

Bel Air'

I pulled up to the house about 7 or 8And I yelled to the cabbie 'Yo homes smell

ya later'I looked at my kingdom

I was finally thereTo sit on my throne as the Prince of Bel Air

Odyssey: Part I - “I am Laertes’ Son….”A young girl stopped Odysseus on the way to the palace. The young

girl was Athena in disguise. She came to help Odysseus get to the palace by a protective mist that will keep the people there off of him. The next day Alcinous holds an assembly for getting Odysseus a ship to sail home in. The request is approved so they have a big party for Odysseus. At the feast someone sings about the problem between Odysseus and Achilles. Odysseus begins to sob so they move on to playing games. At dinner later that day the same person sings another song about the Trojan War and again Odysseus begins to weep. Alcinous finally wants to know everything about him.

The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air is a song about how Will Smith got from Philadelphia to Bel-Air. The song says “And all shootin' some b-ball outside of the school When a couple of guys who were up to no good” which is talking about him playing basketball and then a group of boys came over with intentions to fight. The song says that he gets in one fight and his mom makes him move to philly with his aunt and uncle. Will Smith kept asking not to go but his mom wouldn’t back down so he decided to make the best out of the situation. In the song he talks about how to people of Bel-Air are stuck up and he wouldn’t fit in since he is a street boy. He says “Looked at my kingdom I was finally there To sit on my throne as the prince of Bel-Air”.

In both of these it is about getting somewhere. In the book it’s about getting to the palace of Alcinous and then home. In the song it’s about getting from Philadelphia to Bel-Air. In both they are going to a wealthier place than where they were before. In the book he is going to a palace which could be compared to going to a castle. In the song he is going from the streets of Philadelphia to the wealthy, upper-class of Bel-Air.

Sweet LeafBy: Black Sabbath

ALRIGHT NOW!Won't you listen?

When I first met you, didn't realizeI can't forget you, for your surprise

you introduced me, to my mindAnd left me wanting, you and your kind

I love you, Oh you know it

My life was empty, forever on a downUntil you took me, showed me around

My life is free now, my life is clearI love you sweet leaf, though you can't hear

Come on now, try it out

Straight people don't know, what you're aboutThey put you down and shut you out

you gave to me a new beliefand soon the world will love you sweet leaf

Odyssey: Part I - “The Lotus Eaters”

The ‘Lotus Eaters’ is about when Zeus causes a horrible storm on Odysseus. The storm causes them to get off track and they end up at the land of the lotus-eaters. When they arrive at the island there are people there. These people are native to the land and get the crew to eat the fruit from the lotus. This fruit is somewhat like a drug in the sense that it makes them want to stay on the island. This fruit gets them to want to eat more and more of the fruit. The only way Odysseus gets them back on the ship and keeps going is by dragging every single one of the crew members back to the ship.

This song is about smoking marijuana. The song says “You introduced me to my mind And left me wanting, you and your kind” which is talking about his first time smoking marijuana and how he loved doing it and wants to keep doing it. The song says “I love you sweet leaf, though you got dear” which is saying how much he loves weed. The dear part actually means expensive in England. It says “You gave to me a new belief”. This means that he doesn’t think that marijuana has any negative effects and it is puts life into a good perspective.

These two things relate because both the fruit and the marijuana intoxicate you. In the story it makes you forget about going home and in the song it makes you feel good. In both it makes you want more of it after you try it. These two relate because in both the “drug” even though it isn’t really a drug in the book changes your state of mind. In both the “drug” puts you in a better state of mind.

[Chorus]

Cyclops

In this part of the Epic Odysseus and his crew are trapped in the cyclops cave. They lost many men but Odysseus devises a plan and they escape. The cyclops did not know their identity until this point but Odysseus can’t help himself. As they sail away he taunts the cyclops and tells him exactly who he is causing the cyclops to pray to his father Poseidon and curse Odysseus and his crew. This causes problems for them later.

Throughout this song Shy Glizzy talks about how cocky he is. During the chorus he says “I think I’m the man I don’t know why I’m so cocky, I’m so cocky, I’m so cocky, I’m so cocky, I’m so cocky, I’m so cocky, I’m so cocky, I think I’m the man I don’t know why I’m so cocky.” This clearly shows how cocky Shy Glizzy is and he also says things like. “My money is a piling I think I sit on it.” What he means by this is he has so much money he can sit on it.

Odysseus and Shy Glizzy are similar because they both show hubris. In this scene Odysseus’ hubris comes out and endangers him and his crew. He doesn’t even realize he is doing it just like when Shy Glizzy says “I don’t know why I’m so cocky.”

Dark in the city night is a wireSteam in the subway earth is afire

Hungry like the WolfBy: Duran Duran

The story “Circe” is about the extended “scrabble” relationship between Odysseus and Circe. They stop at the island of Aeolia, and encounters a beautiful woman named Circe. After Odysseus and his crew arrive his crew is approached by wolves who lead them to Circe who turns them into pigs. When Odysseus comes to save them Circe and him begin to play “scrabble.” He stays there with her for a while. Circe does anything she can do to lend a helping hand and attract Odysseus. Circe is a great hostess by offering hospitality and love for Odysseus. Odysseus cannot stop himself from the temptation of Circe. We can infer that the wolves are actually men that she turned into wolves.

The song, “Hungry Like the Wolf,” is about a man on a journey for a woman. It’s about a man trying to seduce a women similar to how a wolf stalks his prey. The song says, “In touch with the ground I’m after you,” which is talking about the man chasing or going after the woman. in the song he also says, “Hungry like the wolf,” which is saying the man is really desperate to find this woman.

The story “Circe” and the song “Hungry Like the Wolf” relate because both Circe and the man in the song are trying their best to be in love with another person. Both Circe and the man work hard to find or keep their lovers, and neither are successful in the end. The songs also relates because in the song he compares a lot of things to a wolf and in the epic Circe has literally turned men into wolves.

Odyssey: Part I - SirensSirens are sea nymphs with bodies like birds with human

heads. Sailors that sail by the island hear the voices of the sirens and are tempted by them, which results in the sailors coming and living on the island until they die. On the island sirens are everywhere, along with the bones of the dead sailors that couldn’t resist the voices of the sirens. The sirens are expecting Odysseus and his crew to sail by the island, and start singing right away. Odysseus and crew, however. are prepared. Odysseus tells his crew to put wax in their ears so they can’t hear the sirens. This saves the crew tremendously, so they are able to continue their journey to Ithaca.

The song “Come And Get It,” is about a girl that waits for a boy to come to her. The song says, “I'm not too shy to show I love you.” She will give or do anything for his love. She expresses her emotion.

The sirens and the girl relate because the sirens express emotions and sound to attract sailors that sail by the island. The girl explains her patience and that she will wait all day and all night for a boy to come. Just like the sirens, the girl is not taciturn, as she is not shy to show her love. Both the sirens and the girl show as much love and passion as they need to. The song says, “Baby once I get it, I'm yours no take backs,” just as the sirens did with the sailors. Both the girl and the sirens definitely show their desire for love.

Let the bough break, let it come down crashingLet the sun fade out to a dark sky

I can't say I'd even notice it was absentCause I could live by the light in your eyes

I'll unfold before youWhat I've strung together

The very first wordsOf a lifelong love letter

Tell the world that we finally got it all rightI choose you

I will become yours and you will become mineI choose youI choose you

(Yeah)There was a time when I would have believed

themIf they told me you could not come true

Just love's illusionBut then you found me and everything changed

And I believe in something again

My whole heartWill be yours forever

This is a beautiful startTo a lifelong love letter

Tell the world that we finally got it all rightI choose you

I will become yours and you will become mineI choose youI choose you

We are not perfectWe'll learn from our mistakes

And as long as it takesI will prove my love to you

I am not scared of the elementsI am under-prepared, but I am willing

And even betterI get to be the other half of you

Tell the world that we finally got it all rightI choose you

YeahI will become yours and you will become mine

I choose youI choose youI choose you

I Choose YouBy: Sara Bareilles

Odyssey: Part I - Charybdis and ScyllaThere were two monsters. One was Charybdis and one was Scylla.

Charybdis was a huge whirlpool. The whirlpool came out a few times a day but the catch with choosing Charybdis was that either all your men stay alive or all of your men die. Scylla was a six headed, six armed monster that had 6 heads connected to her body. If you chose her you always lose six people. Odysseus chose to go the route of Scylla. He did not tell the crew because he knew they would panic and not row the boat. If they did not row the boat then the current from the whirlpool would eventually suck them in they would all die. When he got to where Scylla was six of his men were snatched up and eaten. His crew lost confidence in him after that.

The song is more about love but it involves choosing something. The song says “Tell the world we got it all right I choose you”. This is saying im right in what i have done so I choose you. The song says “We are not perfect We’ll learn from our mistakes”. This is saying we make mistakes for a reason. It is saying after we make the mistakes we learn from them so we do not keep making the same mistake. The song says “I am not scared”.

These two relate because in both they are choosing something. In the book Odysseus is choosing a monster. In the song she is choosing her partner and her love. They both think they have made the right decision. In the book Odysseus thinks he is making the right decision to only lose six men we he could potentially lose all of his men. In the song she thinks she is making the right decision with who she loves. Both of them are not scared. In the book Odysseus is not really scared because he knows six of his men will be dying instead of him. In the song she isn’t scared to have a relationship with the person.

(TGI III, Big Johnson in background)Odysseus… (Odysseus) he told his men to not touch crap

They begged to stop, he said let’s notWe must push through... no matter what

They kept on pleading…. he said ok But you must remember (must remember)

That touching those cattle (touching those cattle)Is not ok, is not ok, is not ok, is not ok

(Big Johnson)It’s not okayyyy...you better not... touch those cattle...it’s not okayyyy

its not okayyy.. you better not touch those cattle its not okayyy(TGI III)

So they arrivedAlready deprived

But they needed the rest And this idea seemed best

It was all good for a while until his men messed it up So they decided they had had enough...

My boy Odysseus went away to pray And this would be one of their last days

They slaughtered this mans cattle and that was real dumbcause He called up his homie and said yep they’re done……..

That next day... his homie decided...that it was time…it was time He sent them a bolt... that would be remembered for all of time

Don’t Touch Those CattleBy: TGI III ft Big Johnson

In the story “Cattle Of The Sun God,” Odysseus and his crew arrive at Thrinakia, the island of the sun god. When they board onto land, Odysseus and his crew see a herd of cattle. Odysseus makes his crew swear that they do not touch the cattle. A huge storm hits the island and the crew runs out of food, reaching starvation quickly. Odysseus prays heavily to the gods for help. They do send him help, but it is not the help he is looking for. The gods put Odysseus into a heavy sleep. While the crew is still awake and starving, one of the members leads the rest into eating one of the cattle. After Odysseus wakes up, he sees his men eating the cattle. Helios, the owner of the cattle, is furious at the men and demands punishment of them from the gods. When the crew leaves the island to set sail for Ithica, the ship is ravaged by a huge deadly thunderbolt, which is Zeus’ punishment of the Odysseus and his crew for eating the cattle.

“Sun God,” the rap written by our group, explains the warnings that Odysseus gave the crew about the cattle. The rap demonstrates that the crew took advantage of Odysseus being asleep. The rap says, “My boy Odysseus went away to pray and on this would be one of their last days.” This is saying that the men would eat the cattle while Odysseus was away. The rap also says the men will be punished for their wrong doings and that Odysseus was left alone after everyone else was killed.

The story and the rap relate because in the story the men didn’t listen to Odysseus, and in the rap the men did the same thing. Also, Odysseus went away to sleep in the story and in the rap he went away to pray. Next, in the story and the rap the men were punished for not listening to Odysseus. In both the rap and the story the men didn’t follow directions and they suffered the consequences.

Odyssey: Part II - “Death at the Palace”

Is this part of the epic Odysseus has returned home and is ready to get revenge on the suitors who have been trying to take over his kingdom and take his wife as one of theirs. After he reveals his identity he kills Antinous their leader. After this they ask for mercy but he refuses. Odysseus with the help of Telemachus and Athena then proceed to kill every single one of the 118 suitors. This is finally Odysseus’ chance to finally rid of the suitors for good and retake his kingdom.

This song is a very well known for being a harcore meatal song. In the chorus the band repeatedly yells “let the bodies hit the floor.” Even though the band says its about the brotherhood of a moshpit many people agree that it is about people dying and the song is mostly accepted as that. The song is about violence and letting anger and rage out which is exactly what Odysseus was doing when slaughtered the suitors.

In one part of the song the lead singer says “Skin against skin, blood and bone. You're all by yourself but you're not alone. You wanted in now you're here” The first sentence relates to how close they were during this massacre. The second sentence relates because each suitor is all by their self, fending for their lives but at the same time many others are in the same situation. The third sentence is ironic and true because the suitors wanted to be there trying to win the love of Penelope and thats what led to their death.
