PREP YEAR CLASSROOM

Page 2

Assalamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu

I can hardly believe that it is almost the end of the year. How quickly time has flown. This term

has been a very busy term for teachers and students with assessments, excursions, sports

and various other activities that that has been happening.

Assessments will start in week six and I am positive that all the students will reach the goal

that we had set out to achieve at the beginning of the year in sha Allah. Allhumdullilah the

students are very motivated and eager to learn and are continuing to work tirelessly to

achieve excellent results.

Our swimming lessons start on the 30th of October for a whole week. Learning to swim is one of

life’s most valuable skills, which could save a child’s life. It is for their own safety around

water. It is good to see that all the prep students will be taking advantage of this invaluable

swimming programme.

Thank you to all the parents and families for your continuous support and help throughout

this year. It would not have been possible for your children to have excelled without your help. I

have enjoyed working with all the children in my class and thank you for entrusting them with

me.

I would like to give a special thanks to Sara Khan who has been helping out in the prep class

every Wednesday morning. It is always busy in prep class so any help is immensely

appreciated.

If you have any queries and would just like to talk to me about your child’s learning please do

not hesitate to come and see me.

Message from Year 2

Assalamu alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuhu,

Dear Parents/ Caregivers

There goes another year! and what a year it has been.

This year the year two class has done an exceptional job through the terms. They have all

made such an amazing progress and together as a class they have set a high ex-

ample. This class has never failed to work together as a team, encourage each other and con-

tinuously be a role model class for the rest of the school.

Just a few things to look out for this term;

junior AUS kick, Spelling B competition on Thursday the 26th Oct, Swimming lessons from

Monday 30th October, 15th November Drama Day rehearsal, Monday the 20th Student free

day, Thursday 23rd a Full Dress rehearsal for drama day, Friday 24th November Drama day

and Thursday 30th of November last day of school.

For homework this term I would really like to encourage the reading and learning weekly

spelling words. Also the students are to continue with their mental maths weekly units. I

have reduced the weekly homework this term as the student have been handed out a

Spelling B competition sheet, they will be given NAPLAN questions occasionally and they

will also have parts to practise for their drama day as additional homework thought term 4.

If at times this is not enough the students have full access to Mathletics online and Literacy

Planet which they are able to access on their own with a username and password they have

written in their homework book covers.

Year 4 classroom

Assalamu Alaikum, Wa Rahmatullah Wa

Barakato.

Dear Parents/ Carers

Welcome back to the final term of the school

year 2017. It’s always a sad term as this is the

last term that I will have the opportunity to

teach these amazing Year 4 students. They

have really tried hard to go beyond their own

individual boundaries.

Term four is also a very busy term with the

children completing the rest of the curriculum

and assessments. It is a term when I’ll be

writing their reports. Please assist and

remind your child to complete all set tasks and

to be diligent during class lessons.

The Drama Day/ Jalsa Day will also be on this

term. It will be conducted on the Friday 24th of

November after school. Your child/ren will be

very busy preparing a presentation based on a

unit of work what they have learnt during the

year. They are all excited with this task and

look forward to showing you their talent.

Especially as they have been learning so much

about Performing Arts this term. This

learning opportunity allowed them to gain an

understanding of how facial expression and

body language are vital to relaying information

to their audience.

The children have also been learning about

Persuasive Writing through the understanding

of how advertisers persuade their target

audience to purchase their products through

cleverly designed packaging. This is an

Integrated unit especially across English,

Science and Health. They even had the

opportunity to design their own packaging

where they really had to think about their

choose of language and visual features for

their package.

I have taken some photos of some of the

students’ wonderful work and included them in

this newsletter. Please enjoy!

Lastly, a big congratulations to all the Grade

Fours for an absolutely fantastic performance in

the 2017 Spelling Bee Competition. They all did

an amazing job with memorizing words and their

meanings. On the 16th round the judges unani-

mously declared a tie.

HIGH SCHOOL REVIEW

Assalamu alaikum Wr Wb,

Dear Parents/ Carers

If we thought last term was busy, then this term

has already exceeded last term, with all the

planned extracurricular activities.

In English this term the grade seven and eight

students, are using ‘persuasion for change’. We

have made a list of things that need changing

around the school and the students are gathering

information from other school personnel to support

their ideas for change. The next step will be to

write letters of persuasion to the people who can

authorise this change. We have already been on an

excursion around our local area and have found a

number of things that need changing and

improving. We are now planning the letters that we

will present to our local member of parliament [Mr

Syd Cramp] or to the Mayor [Mr Tom Tate’s]

council. The success/lack of success with the

persuasive techniques used will be judged by the

changes we have brought about.

The year seven and eight students have began

algebra and patterning in Maths, looking at how

relationships between two variables can be

represented as an expression or an equation. We

have also begun a unit on data representation, with

a focus on dot plots, stem and leaf plots, and

straight line graphs. The introduction of specialised

ICT lessons with Mrs Bay will also include using

programs like Microsoft Excel to do calculations

and organising of data.

This term in Science, the year seven and eight stu-

dents have been doing Chemistry. We began with

understanding the differences between pure sub-

stances and mixtures, and further classifying mix-

tures as homogeneous or heterogeneous. Experi-

ments were carried out to see if different solutes

dissolve in various solvents and the type of mix-

tures they form. We have now continued onto un-

derstanding The Periodic Table of Elements, their

symbols and how they are organised. Finally, we

will be looking at some common reactions and

whether these cause physical change (like colour,

shape, smell, heat) or chemical change (like form-

ing a completely new substance).

The grade nine and ten students have been analys-

ing musical messages [poetry] and their social im-

pact. They are creating for social comment and/or

change for the present times.

For SOSE the grade seven and eight students are

investigating the Ancient Civilisations of Greece,

Rome, Egypt and other Mediterranean cultures as

well as ancient Chinese and Indian peoples. They

are investigating who, where, when, achievements,

what remains of the civilisation, as well as the

impact of that civilisation on present-day life.

The grade nine and ten students are studying the

geographies of ‘Human Well Being’. What makes a

good Life? Are we better or worse off than other are-

as of the world? Does ‘wealth’ equal ‘wellbeing’?

In term four, the year nine and ten students began

in depth algebra using quadratic equations to graph

parabolas. We have looked at how these graphs

change based on different factors and the everyday

situations that can represented mathematically

with these graphs. We will then move onto data

representation and analysis, where we will look at

histograms, box and whisker plots and analysing

sample spaces. The ICT lessons done with Mrs will

also include use of Microsoft Excel to represent data

using digital methods.

This term for Science, our focus has been Chemistry.

The year nine and ten students began an

“Entrepreneurship Project” where they will have to

come up with a business model and produce a prod-

uct to sell that involves a chemical reaction to make

it. Be sure to come by on Drama Day to support this

budding entrepreneurs at their market day stalls!

Concurrently, we have been looking at the various

atomic models for the atom, how ions are formed,

and the different types of bonding: Metallic, Ionic,

and Covalent. Thereafter, we will investigate how

fast chemical reactions occur and whether these can

be sped up. Part of this unit involves understanding

of radiation, from the Sun, and what occurs when

our bodies get too much of it. As such, incidents like

Chernobyl nuclear plant, and Hiroshima Nagasaki

nuclear bombing will be studied.

This nine week term has been packed with exciting

events that will see our students participating in a

Quran competition, a brand new Tafseer Speech

competition, Spelling Bee, Swimming in Week 5, an

excursion to the Brisbane Science Centre, and Dra-

ma performance [Jalsa]. Some of our high school

students will also be participating in a Robotics

challenge this Friday. During this term we will also

take part in full days of Art and Health and Physical

Education, and we have a specialist HPE teacher to

teach this subject.

As you can see it is a very busy term!
