NEWS from Meeting September 28th, 2016 HONOUR FOR CHARLES and WELCOME DG CAROL

To Honour one of own is an important occasion es-

pecially our visit from DG Carol Lawton.

The meeting was ably and efficiently chaired by Pe-

ter L. After the usual procedures of toast to the

Queen of England and Australia and Invocation and

the Toast to Rotary International offered by Chris,

Peter called Charles to the podium. Peter made a

very charming speech which loosely quoted went

thus. He said “It gives me much pleasure and honour

to do this presentation to Charles.

Charles was born in Brussels, Belgium in 1933.

When

Peter

met

Charles he was operating with his former wife STA Electrics in

Centre Rd, Bentleigh. Charles was a Foundation Member of the

former Rotary Club of Bentleigh, chartered in January 1974 and

today represents the longest serving member of the club, both for-

mer and the merged clubs of Moorabbin Central, with 42 years and

8 months of rotary service as well as being the oldest club member.

Charles has received A PHF and 2 sapphires. He has 2 children,

Yvette and David and has 4 Grandchildren. We are pleased to see

his long-time partner Asia here to support him. Over the years

Charles has served pretty much on all the committees and in 1995-

96 was the first presi-

dent of the merged club

forming the Rotary Club

of Bentleigh Moorabbin

Central”. Peter went on

to say that as President

he came “out of his

shell” and that there are

not too many Rotarians

who are prepared to get

in and do anything

asked and Charles cer-

tainly fits the bill as a

dedicated Rotarian in all regards. Peter recalled a moment when he and Kevin were collecting for one of the

charitable organizations he knocked on one of the several homes to collect donations and to their surprise

Charles answered their knock. He was there at his Father’s home as his Father had just passed away. Charles’

Father was 93 years old! As Jewish people say on such on such an occasion “biz hundert zwanzig” Meaning we

hope you will live to 120 years! Peter continued on to say that he would have to mention 2 items that Charles had

constructed for the club as some of can recall. Firstly he built a Market Trolley which was so heavy that it took 6

people to manoeuvre it. (There was no office in those days and it was really useful) The second was a rostrum

and storage for club items such as flags and banners. The top section

looked like a coffin and again was a massive and heavy structure. It

was most useful. Charles, the club have determined to appoint you as

an Honorary Member which is clearly something reserved for special

members and you are most deserving. Peter invited District Governor

Carol Lawton to hand Charles the Certificate and Pin giving him Hon-

orary Membership of the Club. The members were upstanding to con-

gratulate Charles. Thank you Peter for performing the honour of the

presentation. Well Done!

Pres. Greg officially welcomed DG Carol, Asia and Rotarian Merv

from the RC of Caulfield came to especially support

Charles. DG Carol began her talk to us to say it was a pleas-

ure to be here and also on the occasion of the honour be-

stowed on Charles. She had 3 important messages for us. 1)

To talk about the RI President John Germ, 2) The big picture,

3) our club.

Carol told us that RI Pres John is a most amazing man, pas-

sionate and when learning about people that the best thing in

life is to help others. We have the opportunity to largely share

and change lives of people that we will never meet. Team

Rotary has approximately 1.233 million members who serve

in everything that matters. In this generation we should reach

fulfilment one day at a time. The theme Serving Humanity is

what we do. To continue the work that Foundation does all

that is asked of us is to donate $150 per annum and to be-

come a Centurion. We can Rotarian Groups to align with

special interests. The more we learn, the more we can share.

The World Health Organisation which has all the information

regarding the fight against polio has informed us that Nigeria

has had 3 new out breaks of polio. This serves to remind us

that the job is nor done until there are no more cases. Bill

and Melinda Gates have promised that their contribution to-

wards this important cause are $2 to our $1! .We are urged to register our membership. This enables us to learn

about what is going on and to put on line our goals and celebrations. DG Carol asked us to consider water pro-

jects. 100s and 1000s can die especially in Africa where there is no water. We should consider District Grants.

We should also focus on Membership and learn through more information that is available.

There will information evenings for Cluster Meetings where op-

portunities are offered to grow, RI John Germ has a Member-

ship Challenge of 1 new member per quarter year! That is BIG!

We should look at Partnerships and accept invitations to attend

meetings at District Level. Last year special interests were

made for Domestic Violence and Men’s Health. She continued

to tell us that she appreciated our passion as a club and we

have special reason to be proud of our club with our history

since 1974 and what we have contributed to young people and

to the community is impressive. She mentioned our work at the

market, for Riding for the Disabled and Refuges. DG Carol

made note of the work that Ian does with his photography both

at District and Club levels and the Bulletin and Chris for Inter-

plast. A question was asked re the survivors of Polio as the

symptoms return as sufferers get older. We were told that Rotary at District Level was aware and needed to be

looked at.

Pres Greg presented a cheque for $2000 to DG Carol

towards her Special Project being the fight against Polio.

Thank you for sharing all this important knowledge, and

thank you for coming to us so early in the morning.

There is a pin saying END POLIO NOW and a pin for

Foundation that Pres. Greg will receive a little later. Her

scarf depicting Rotary Down Under is a dot painting in

Blue and White and most attractive. Sergeant Tim con-

ducted a miniscule Sergeant Session.

The club would like to wish the Jewish members a

Good New Year and Well Over the Fast and to celebrate

the High Holydays with Peace and Good Health. RO-

TARY SERVING HUMANITY. Zilla (Bulletin Reporter)

Guest Speaker October 26th Claire O'Shea -

Early Morn African Violet Group If Claire O'Shea looks vaguely familiar it would be that you have met her previously as Grant Perry's sister and/or a Charter Member of the Rotaract Club of Bentleigh (in recession). However, Claire is speaking to you today as a member of the Early Morn African Violet Group Inc. Claire has been growing and showing African Violets since 2009. Claire is one of the dem-onstrators at Early Morn's Annual Show and assists in the judging as a steward. She also writes and gives talks at Early Morn's monthly meetings - some of her articles have been reprinted in the African Violet Society of America's (AVSA) African Violet Magazine which is subscribed to by enthu-siasts around the world. Whilst most people happily paddle in the shallows, Claire has plunged in at the deep end and will demystify the care of these beautiful and oft-thought difficult plants and introduce you to types less encountered. African Violets are the world's most popular house plant and belong to the plant family Gesneriacea along with Streptocarpus, Episcias, Columneas and Sinningias just to name a very few. Although she does not have any formal horticultural qualifi-cations she does hold a Diploma of Floristry from the Floral Art School of Australia. Now retired from secretarial work both in private legal practices and the Monash University Faculty of Law, when not busy with her duties as a wife and mother to 2 teenage boys, Claire pursues, in addition to gardening - both indoor and out, painting, nee-dlework and tennis.
