1 DANA WEST YACHT CLUB

Summer’s over but the fun has not stopped. We have a lot of great events coming up this month so be sure to check the flyer boards and plan your month. If you have not heard, the club will be open beginning at 9:30 a.m. on Sundays for some breakfast and early morning football.

On Saturday, October 7th we have the General Membership Meeting at 11:30 am. The Silver Stars will have their fundraiser breakfast from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. Be sure to show up early and have a great breakfast to support the Silver Stars scholarship fund.

Due to having some members complaining with overcrowding, we will start our new Officer of the Day (OD) program October 1st. OD’s will be experienced members who have been trained and know club policies. They, along with the bartending staff, will help to ensure our members get the best service and help manage guest population. Don’t be surprised if the bartenders ask to see your membership card before serving. These rules are not new, but some of the processes we’ll enforce are:• Guests are responsibility of member who signs them in• Member must sign guests in, guests can’t sign themselves in• Guests must properly wear their guest badge at all times• Guests must leave with the member who signed them in• If you are planning to have more than 7 guests, please fill out a request form at the barPlease see additional info in this issue of the L&B regarding these rules.

By enforcing our rules we have in place we can help ensure we have seats for all our members. Also, as a courtesy, if you have only 2 people in your party. Please do not sit at a large table unless you do not mind sharing your table with other members.

VICE COMMODORE’SREPORTBy GEORGE BLOOMFIELD

Tahiti is calling and many of you have enthusiastically answered that call. We can’t wait! Though it’s nearly a year away, our 2018 Commodore’s Cruise is shaping up to be a lot of fun. Marsha Pilgeram of Paul Gauguin Cruises gave an informative presentation and was thrilled by your response. Thank you to all who signed up. Of course, I will need to be voted in as Commodore so I hope I’m not jumping the gun. New Member signups have been healthy throughout the year. Welcome to all those who joined us to date. We will host just two more 2-day Open Houses before the end of the year, October 14 and 15 and November 18 and 19. If your friends would like to look into becoming a member, invite them in for an open house, or introduce me when they’re in as your guests. I’ll be glad to support your love for the club and answer any questions they may have. A couple business items: Appreciation Cards: For those who have paper Member Appreciation Cards, these cards will be phased out over the next couple months and may be exchanged for one of our new digital Gift Cards which can be used at the club in the same fashion. Each paper card will be worth $40. If you have 3 paper cards, your Gift Card will be loaded with $120 for use at the Bar or Ship Store. Just as the paper cards, there is no cash redemption value. After January 1, 2018, the paper cards will no longer be honored. Boater / Non-Boater Member Applications: Some may know by now that we have reached our maximum allowed number of 100 Non-Boat Owners. Any Non-Boater applications we receive will be wait-listed until a position opens. We have approximately 6 Non-Boat Owners wait listed at this time and we anticipate roughly 2 to 3 will be accepted each month. I hope I’m not being overly optimistic. DWYC Elections: Thank you to those of you that signed up to run for a position as Director next year. I expect this article will be out after you’ve each presented your most convincing and compelling reasons to vote for you.

Good luck to each of you. I look forward to working with the new Board come January.

3 DANA WEST YACHT CLUB

The By-Laws require that new applicants for membership be posted on the Bulletin Board for twenty one (21) days. Any regular member may place an objection against an applicant by submitting the objection in writing to the Board of Directors prior to the Next Board Meeting on October 17th, 2017.I hope you have a chance to drop by the Club, so that I can welcome you in person. I would like you to invite your friends, dock neighbors and family to join DWYC.

Dana West Yacht Club operates as a private, non-profit club. In compliance with the California State Liquor Laws, we must have an Officer of the Day at the door, and all guests of DWYC members must be signed in by the member in our registration book before entrance. All visiting yacht club members must present verification, legibly sign our registration book and must wear a guest badge, which can be found in the OD book. The OD must verify individuals, thereby requesting them to please present their card. Most members now have their cards ready as they enter.

A DWYC member’s name comes up about every 2 years. Your duty as OD is the only required job you are asked to do for the club. You will be notified by letter as to your date, dress, hours and duties. A follow-up call will be made prior to your assignment. The OD schedule is also posted in the Lines and Bits which can be found online at dwyc.org. Dinner starts at 5PM. If you can’t perform your duty, try to arrange for your own substitute OD. If you are not successful call or e-mail O.D. Coordinator at 949-661-1185 or [email protected].

OFFICER OF THE DAYBy ALEX GELMAN, REAR COMMODORE

As many of you know the club has become very popular with its guests and members to the point that some of our own members have had difficulties with over crowding. Effective October 1, 2017, a new Officer of the Day (OD) program will begin. Many Members have already volunteered to be part of this experimental program. These trained volunteers after October 1, 2017 will act as Club ODs. In addition, training is taking place with the bar staff to have them act as ODs when one of these volunteers is not present. The ODs will act from approximately 5:30pm to 8:30pm Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. These ODs will more consistently enforce HOUSE RULES and CLUB RULES, including:

[a] A Member may not bring more than 7 guests without obtaining prior written approval from the Club. The member must accompany the guests at all times they are in the club. These guests must wear the name badge provided.

[b] Any member must show a valid membership card as they arrive. Any reciprocal member must show a valid membership card to an accepted reciprocal yacht club. These reciprocal rights are subject at any time to modification or withdrawal especially in the situation of violation of house rules or overcrowding of the club and reciprocals will be encouraged to call ahead.

[c] A reciprocal member may not bring more than 4 guests without obtaining prior written approval from the Club. The reciprocal member must accompany the guests at all times they are in the club. Guests must wear the name badge provided.

[d] All individuals using this club are subject to and must follow our posted house rules. The club has the right to restrict or eject anyone not following these house rules. These posted house rules include dress codes and codes of conduct which are posted behind the OD station.

[e] Children must be accompanied and supervised at all times by an adult. They are not permitted on dance floors for the safety of the children and our members. Children should leave the club by 9:00pm.

These and other rules have been developed for the safety and enjoyment of all individuals and especially our members. Have courtesy for all and patience while you enjoy this “Best Little Yacht Club on the West Coast.”

have obtained the OC Edition shirt. We are looking at some holiday items. We will have a pre-holiday sale in October. If you have items you may want to find in the store now or for the holidays, please let us know at [email protected].

OK, then some sailing terms for your reference:

Sailing – the fine art of getting wet and becoming ill while going nowhere slowly at great expense (equivalent to standing in a cold shower, fully clothed, throwing up, and tearing up a $100 bill while a bunch of other people watch you).

Boom—so named for the sound that’s made when it hits crew in the head on its way across the boat.

Bulkhead – Discomfort suffered by Sailors who drink too much.

Bitter end – the finish of a race when you come in last

Bottom Paint – What you get when cockpit seats have just been painted.

Calm – Sea condition characterized by the simultaneous disappearance of the wind and the last cold beverage.

Clew - When the captain actually tells you what he intends to do next.

And Crew – Heavy stationary objects used on shipboard to hold down charts, anchor cushions in place and dampen sudden movements of the boom.

More definitions later!

REARCOMMODORE’SREPORTBy ALEX GELMAN

In October, we begin our pilot OD program. I have written separately about that program in this Lines and Bits. Thank you to all those who have volunteered. Calendars have been created through December and training has been provided to these wonderful people as well as our bar staff. If you weren’t able to volunteer through December, we welcome you to fill in as needed.

Let us be reminded, as this club begins to consistently enforce our club rules, house rules, and dress codes, that this is being done for the benefit of all our members, and their guests and others. Will we still from time to time have possible issues? Of course. This club is gaining a reputation of fine food, great bar, happy people, good view, great prices and good music. More people including members want to be here. On one hand, it is a good “problem” to have. Thanks to our members for their patience and courtesy to all. In September, our new menus were issued. They are beautiful and professional. No, prices were not raised. We are all VIPs. Those menu books were free to this club, donated by vendors. Thank you Enzo for making it happen.

Food and bar sales continue to be higher than the same time last year by almost 10%. F&B operations continue to be financially sound. Prices are not being increased. The rise in profit is partly due to better buying techniques and more efficient use of inventory. Sales have increased largely due to the quality of the product. The “Happy House” menu appears to be a great success and we are trading out some items. Congratulations to our kitchen and bar staff, Chef Joel and George Moreno. If you have an idea for a menu item, let me know at [email protected].

Ship Store continues to look for different items to sell that may capture your imagination. Plain white t-shirts with our logo were an amazing success as were Hawaiian shirts with our logo, so much so that the entire bar-staff

FLEET LOGBy TAMARA TATICH

We’re so blessed to live and play in a coastal area where the waters are friendly all year round! We get some of our best sailing and fishing once the wind and water turns cooler and visiting other harbors can be a more relaxing experience.

This proved true for the fleet that headed north to Santa Barbara led by Jim and Bev Montrella. The Montrella’s on “H2O Man”, the Noah’s on “Options”, the Champlin’s on “Endless Summer” and the Hunter’s on “Cheerio” ventured north on the annual extended cruise where they were able to “plan as they go” making their way north and south. They extended their extended cruise by staying over longer in Santa Barbara and they also hiked the islands of Anacapa and Santa Cruz. Not having to rush back, they decided to extend the cruise yet again by pulling up moorings at the Isthmus in Santa Catalina before heading home (photos next month). WELCOME HOME!!

I’m sure you know that we’ve sold out our Avalon Cruise. That being said, if you were on the fence and now want to go, please reach out to me. I’ve got a wait list started, as there are always changes that occur as we draw closer to the cruise. If you are signed up and haven’t heard from me, please call or email me immediately! I want to make sure everyone is accounted for! Lastly, you can expect a call or email from me if I haven’t received your payment yet. This is more to confirm your plans haven’t changed.

Avalon is the last cruise on the 2017 calendar! Can you believe that? I’m amazed at how quickly the years flying by, but we do have one other Fleet event coming up and that is the Year End Fleet Review Celebration on Wednesday, November 8th at 6pm. Anyone and everyone that participated in a cruise is invited to share their experiences and toss around ideas for the 2018 season. It’s as much social as it is productive, so please mark your calendar and send me any photos you may have taken while on a cruise to make our slideshow more fun for the viewing!

Thanks again for allowing me to serve as your Fleet Captain. It’s certainly been a life-changing experience that has left me with many wonderful memories and a “fleet” of new friends!

In August, I completed arrangements for the 2018 Cruise to Borrego Springs. It is scheduled for March 16-18, 2018. Sign up forms will be available December 17, 2017 and are due January 21, 2018. We will have a meeting on February 6, 2018 to finalize the agenda and catered meal.

Since the Landlubbers are a new group in the Club, I thought it wise to inform the membership on the operation of the Landlubbers cruises.

Reservations normally need to be made 6 months to a year in advance and normally require 10 RV’s (minimum) to get a discount rates. Most campgrounds require a deposit and is not refundable after 90 days prior to reserved dates. Also, we need 10 RV’s to reserve a club room for our use during the outing. The room is used for the catered dinner, gatherings for libations, games or in case of inclement weather. Payment for the reservations is usually required 30 days before the event.

We usually look for an RV Park that also has cottages for members that would like to attend but don’t have an RV. I also look for things to do in the area, i.e., wine tasting, area touring sites, etc.

I have tried to coordinate with the Fleet cruises but there are only 2 good spots I have found . There is Newport Dunes RV/Balboa Yacht Club and Chula Vista RV/Chula Vista Yacht Club (deceased). Newport usually requires a year in advance for spaces and clubhouse reservations. CV doesn’t have a clubhouse and we used the CVYC for our activities on our last dual cruise.

Operationally the Landlubbers will operate like this: an RV campground will be chosen and appropriate reservations will be made. Notice will be given to members about two to three months in advance with a signup deadline about 6 weeks before the trip. A meeting will be held 4-5 weeks before to review the itinerary/schedule and decide on the catered dinner. I will then contact the caterer and finalize the menu and payment terms. As Wagon Masters, we usually arrive a day earlier to assure that all the details have been covered.

Our parking lot sale has been postponed until next spring. There just wasn’t much enthusiasm for it in September and the word on the street is that the Spring is the best time for a sale. If you have some items that just need to go, I’d suggest donating them to the Islanders so they can auction them off on Saturday, November 4th. Contact Islanders President, Molly Dearing at: [email protected]

Dana Point Yacht Club holds the Richard Henry Dana charity regatta each year to benefit various charities. The charity of choice the last few years is their non-profit junior foundation - Dana Point Harbor Youth Foundation.

There wasn’t much wind at the beginning of the races. Then out of nowhere, as the wind sometimes does here in Dana Point, came out and really blew. The regatta was called after 3 races. We had five juniors race in three boats. Equipment issues popped up and dramatically hurt our performance. The halyard snapped on CFJ “Maggie”, crewed by Frankie Wright, Andrew Schwartz, and Noah Wehr so their racing day was cut a bit short. Adam Boyajian

took 2nd place in Lasers sailing

“Tank” to a great finish considering the boom popped out of the gooseneck. In the Tera class, Chloe Brandvig sailed “Caper” to a very respectable 5th place in a very large field of Teras.

These DWYC Junior sailors raced their boats well and as usual, represented their club with Corinthian Spirit. They overcame serious equipment issues and pretty lumpy conditions. We want to say thank you to them for participating and sailing well.

Chloe Brandvig in “Caper” overtakes an American Legion YC junior.

ISLANDER’SUPDATEBy MOLLY DEARING

The Islanders’ Paint Night held in August was again a huge success!! We hosted a smaller group of painters this time, but there was a large amount of artistic talent that was demonstrated nonetheless!

September brought us fall, and the start of a busy couple of months. On September 20th, the Islanders hosted our Murder Mystery Dinner - “Live, Love, and Die”. The mystery script was written by our own Julie D’Urso, and attendees participated in solving the mystery. Photos in next issue.

October 15th brings us our Election Social, where we will hold the election for the open position on the 2018 Islanders Board (Historian). Interested ladies can add their name to the list that will be posted at the club, and voting will be held on October 15th. Even if you aren’t interested in putting your name in the hat for the open position, please come by the Social, say hello, and enjoy some champagne and light snacks. This is a great opportunity for the Islanders (all female members of DWYC in good standing) to mingle and meet the Board!

The White Elephant Auction will be held in the evening on November 4th and it is always a fun event where you are sure to find some new treasures for your home and boat. Thank you to Steve White for (once again) volunteering to be our esteemed auctioneer! Donations of new or gently used housewares, boat items, art, etc. (please no clothing or shoes) can be dropped off at the club during the day on Saturday, November 4th between 9am and 4pm and the live auction will start at 6pm. Please contact Molly Dearing at [email protected] for more information. Cheers!

HEALTH & HAPPINESSBy DEBBIE PEAY

We had a great summer agenda again at DanaWest Yacht Club with some fabulous parties, karaoke, vinyl night, Jimmy Buffett parties, music on the patio on Sunday afternoon, as well as dancers throughout the summer with live music! Even more important was the fun we have meeting new friends at these great events and with our turnaround cruising program. We even got to some places this year that we haven’t been before! Happiness is also welcoming new grandchildren into the world. Ron and Cindy Latin are the proud grandparents of their second grandchild, Wyatt Titus Graham, born September 9 at 6:38 p.m.. He was 20 1/2 inches and 7 lbs. 10 oz.. Congratulations Grandma and Grandpa Latin! Happiness is also members who moved away moving back. Welcome back Linda Amorde! Not to be outdone, Steve and Sondra Harrison actually bought another boat when their boat went down. We have 2 members who had surgery (Ruth Nastoff and Debbie Rossback). Both have been back at the club so they are recovering. We’ve had one trip to the emergency room that’s been reported this past month. Nancy Lee paid them a visit but returned home the same day. If any Dana West Yacht Club members have some health issues and or great things happening in their lives like the birth of children and grandchildren, buying a new boat, selling the boat or moving to a new home, domestic or foreign travel pass this news on to me for inclusion here! Debbie Peay, [email protected] (949) 495 – 2093, or you could just let me know when you see me around the clubhouse.

Thanks to the generous support of the DWYC Silver Stars and members, seven children or grandchildren of DWYC members received a $1,000 scholarship award from the Patrick Walsh Memorial Scholarship Fund. Silver Stars works hard each year to create fund raising events to support this important program. In turn, DWYC members and their family/friends participate in these events to raise money to help “our kids” attend college.

The 2017-2018 $1,000 scholarship recipients were: Kendyl Brennan, grandchild of Judy Brennan Liam Dempsey, grandchild of Dave Dempsey T.J. Harkrader, grandchild of Richard Ferrell Carly Hodes, grandchild of Betts Flynn Emily Thompson, grandchild of Marge Thompson Grant Troli, son of Nicole & Tom Troli Rileigh Wullbrandt, grandchild of John & Jo Boyd

The Silver Stars wish to thank the DWYC members for their generous support of this program and congratulate these seven college students – wishing each of them good luck in their educational endeavors.

ROD BUSTERSBy JOHN GARNER

Fishing off the Southern California Coast has slowed down some, but it is still good. The Santa Catalina and the San Clemente Islands are where most of the action is taking place. The 43 Bank has also been a good area--YT 20-30 lbs. and Yellowfin Tuna 10-60 lbs.

The back side of SCI /Desperation Reef/ 381 still has some very good volume of 100-250 lb. BFT. Capt. Scott McDaniels, owner of the Sea Adventure-80 said, “Blue Fincan be seen for miles when the massive schools are on the feed.” He also noted that it has been 100 years since these big fish were so common in our local waters.

It does not get much better than this--so, take your family fishing and have a great time.
