Symphony Center Presents Sunday, October 7, 2012, 3 p.m. Special Concert Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán

Tickets: $32–$92 An annual favorite at Symphony Center, Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán returns once again for a spectacular afternoon of joyful Mexican music. Based in Mexico City and now in its fifth generation, Mariachi Vargas is considered the leading authority in the genre, with more than 50 recordings to its credit and appearances in more than 200 films.

Civic Orchestra of Chicago Monday, October 8, 2012, 8 p.m. Civic Orchestra of Chicago Cliff Colnot, conductor RESPIGHI Fountains of Rome BEETHOVEN Symphony No. 7 Tickets: Performance is free, but tickets are required Principal Conductor Cliff Colnot leads the first concert of the Civic Orchestra’s 94th season. The Civic Orchestra is a program of The Institute for Learning, Access and Training at the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, which offers a comprehensive sequence of programs intended to transform the lives of young people through active participation in music.

Symphony Center Presents Friday, October 12, 2012, 8 p.m. Jazz Series The Great Flood Rivers: Nature, Power, Culture Film by Bill Morrison Music composed and performed by Bill Frisell Bill Frisell, guitar Ron Miles, trumpet Tony Scherr, bass Kenny Wollesen, drums Tickets: $23–$74 Opening the 2012/13 Symphony Center Presents Jazz series and a season-long exploration of Rivers: Nature, Power, Culture is the specially commissioned performance of Bill Frisell’s score to The Great Flood, a film that explores the tragic 1927 Mississippi flood, which destroyed homes and lives, contributing to The Great Migration of thousands of African-Americans—including many Delta blues musicians—northwards to cities such as Chicago. The Great Flood was commissioned by Symphony Center Presents, along with the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, which hosted the world premiere; Wexner Center for the Arts at the Ohio State University; Carnegie Hall; and Hopkins Center, Dartmouth College.

Perahia was a frequent soloist with Solti and the CSO, making his debut with Solti in 1974 and appearing under Solti’s baton a total of six times throughout his tenure as music director. Perahia appears with a program of classical masterpieces by Haydn, Schubert, Beethoven, Schumann and Chopin. This is his first recital appearance at Symphony Center since 2007.

musicians themselves. These free concerts are designed to introduce classical music to new audiences by offering insight on composers whose works will be presented on CSO subscription concerts. The 2012/13 Symphony Center Presents Orchestra series opens with a very special concert in honor of former CSO Music Director Sir Georg Solti. The World Orchestra for Peace, founded by Solti in 1995, is an ensemble of the finest musicians selected from the world’s greatest orchestras (most are concertmasters or section principals in their own orchestras), including past and present members of the CSO. The ensemble was founded to affirm, in Solti’s words, ―the unique strength of music as an ambassador for peace.‖ The orchestra makes its Symphony Center debut under the baton of Valery Gergiev and hosted by Lady Solti on what would have been Solti’s 100th birthday.

Since 2002, Hallowed Haunts has thrilled music lovers of all ages with scary music, creepy costumes and tasty treats in a frightfully festooned Orchestra Hall. The popular CSO Chamber Music series at The Art Institute of Chicago offers a wonderful opportunity for arts lovers to explore connections between visual art and classical music. The musical portion of the program is introduced with a discussion and slide presentation given by Art Institute curators, and following the performance, patrons receive a guided gallery tour featuring artworks relating to the concert’s theme. This season’s offerings focus on great artistic ideas that have been inspired by Eastern cultures. This performance features a trio and quartet of music by Maurice Ravel and Gabriel Fauré.

Symphony Center Presents Sunday, October 28, 2012, 3 p.m. Chamber Music Series Alisa Weilerstein, cello Inon Barnatan, piano BEETHOVEN Cello Sonata No. 2 in G Minor, Op. 5 BRITTEN Sonata in C Major for Cello and Piano, Op. 65 STRAVINSKY Suite italienne CHOPIN Cello Sonata in G Minor, Op. 65 Tickets: $28–$104 Cellist Alisa Weilerstein, named a MacArthur Foundation fellow in September 2011, makes her first recital appearance at Symphony Center with pianist Inon Barnatan. The duo performs a diverse program including Beethoven’s Sonata in G Minor, Op. 5, No. 2 and Britten’s Sonata in C Major. The program also includes Stravinsky’s Suite italienne, the composer’s arrangement of several movements from his Pulcinella ballet and Chopin’s Cello Sonata in G Minor, the composer’s last major work and one of the few pieces he wrote for an instrument other than piano. Weilerstein made her CSO debut in June 2009 as part of the Dvořák Festival and performed with the St. Petersburg Philharmonic at Symphony Center in March 2011.

The 2012/13 season opens at the Harris Theater for Music and Dance with a piece by Clyne for electronica and string quartet entitled Roulette, followed by Unfolds, a work for quintet by Chicago composer Edmund Finnis. The program concludes with a newly composed work in three movements by Magnus Lindberg, the 2011/12 composer-in-residence at the New York Philharmonic, entitled Souvenir.
