When Jean Fogelberg and her husband, James Val-entine, moved to Oconto Falls from Colorado among their possessions was a prized experimental airplane they built a decade earlier. The two-seat Vans 6A is hangered at Oconto-Douglas J. Bake Municipal Airport.

“When we brought our airplane, we were impressed with the airport,” Fogelberg recalls. “But there was not much activity, no events. We said to ourselves, ‘well, heck, this is too nice a place to let sit idle.’”

So the couple set about changing that. The fruit of those e orts is the EAA Warbird Badger Squadron 6, 7th Annual Fly-in. The seventh fl y-in is set for Saturday, Sept. 19, at the Oconto airport.

The event — which runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. — fea-tures not just a wide range of military and other aircraft, but classic cars, antique tractors, model A’s and T’s as well as, airplane and helicopter rides, crafters, vendors, food and beverages, and much more.

Admission is $5 for people 13 and older, while chil-dren are free. Parking is free.

Since they’d never organized an event like this, they started seeking advice from people in the area and the Experimental Aircraft Association in Oshkosh, gave them helpful advice.

Warbird Squadron 6, is a group interested in military aircraft and was based in southern Wisconsin. With help from EAA, the Squadron, just one of 16 across the country – was relocated to Oconto. Some of its mem-bers have warbirds they’ve acquired or rebuilt them-selves.

A variety of warbirds are scheduled including a TBM Avenger, B-18, L-19, Russian Yaks and a Corsair.

“The Warbirds are getting older and older, and the people who fl y them are older and older,” Valentine

Special Thanks! The Oconto Fly-in wouldn’t be possible without the special e orts of the folks “directing tra c” on the ramp. These dedicated volunteers are from the Warbirds of America group that works the EAA show year after year. This group of volunteers is expert and moving airplanes around the ramp while keeping crowds in safe zones. We are very fortunate for their help, and the help of our fi re, police, sheri , and other safety volunteers.

said. “A lot of members don’t even have planes, they’re just interested in Warbirds and what they did for our country.”

Visitors will also be able to see recreations of U.S. and German fi eld encampments, as well as an American camp from Vietnam.

“There will be Army vehicles, and equipment that shows the type of living conditions and what the sol-diers’ had for a lifestyle.” Valentine said.

Eagle III, the medical transport helicopter, is sched-uled to attend. An Enstrom helicopter made at the Marinette/Menominee airport is also expected to be on display.

In addition, numerous vendors will be on site, along with booths from several not-for-profi t organizations.

KENT TEMPUS, OCONTO COUNTY REPORTER EDITOR

Beyer House will be represented. The remote controlled planes fl y all day with a special

remote controlled aircraft show from 2 to 3 p.m. Attendance has continued to grow, with an estimated

6,500 in 2013 and between 9,500 and 10,000 last year. Many thanks go to the Boy Scout Troops from Ocon-

to, Oconto Falls and Gillett, along with the numerous volunteers helping throughout the day to make this such a special event.

The couple hopes the annual fl y-in will not just boost the interest of children in aviation, but help lead to in-creased usage of the airport by business.

“It’s underutilized,” Valentine said. “We need to change that. It’s something you’d like to see grow, to benefi t the county and the city.”

TBM-3E Avenger

This aircraft is a TBM-3 “Avenger” torpedo bomber. Purchased by the Aircraft Carrier Hornet Foundation in 1998, it has been restored by volunteers with funds pro-vided through donations. This “Avenger” is painted in the squadron markings of VT-17, a squadron that fought from the deck of USS Hornet CV-12 during WWII.

The TBF/TBM was designed to be a replacement for the TBD Devastator. Public unveiling of the plane was scheduled for December 7, 1941. The attack on Pearl Harbor led to naming the aircraft “Avenger”. During WWII the Avenger was regarded as a rugged torpedo

plane; used against surface vessels and ground targets in the Pacifi c. In the Atlantic the Avenger fl ew primarily as an anti-submarine aircraft. The aircraft was produced in many variations including versions with two wing-mounted .50 cal. Guns; with special radar; with cameras for photo recon and searchlights for Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW), utility, ECM and Carrier On Board De-livery models. After WWII, Avengers served with the Royal Navy, Royal New Zealand Air Force and French Navy. The last TBMs to be retired from active service in 1962 were fl own by the Japanese Self Defense Force.

Radio controlled airplane enthusiasts, the North-ern Aces are back at the Oconto Fly-In. Once again, the fly-in staff and fans are excited to have the North-ern Aces participate in this year’s show. They provide a quality show appealing to all ages. These radio controlled airplanes might be small, but they pack big entertainment into an afternoon with their fast and precise flights. All of the aircraft are radio con-trolled and range in size from small electric planes, to giant scale aircraft. They also fly a variety of unique novelty aircraft.

World Famous Flying laWnmoWer Some guy shows up at every air show we perform

at and tries to cut the lawn, right in the middle of the show. We try to shag him off the field but his lawn-mower has a different idea. Instead of cutting the grass, this lawnmower cuts up the air. Yup, this lawnmower really does fly. Several years ago it was featured in sto-ries in the national media.

Radio controlled airplanes

aerobaticsSmoke on! That’s what the pilots say when they turn

on the smoke and let out in a friendly white cloud. Watch the aircraft do rolls, loops, fly upside down, and more. It’s like watching a thrill ride at Disney! We do this at every show with a variety of aircraft.

World War i and ii aircraFtWatch as we recreate sorties with our vintage WWI

and WWII aircraft. You might see WWI aircraft such as Fand Albatros, Fokker, or Taube. For our WWII portion of the show, you will see Corsairs, Mustangs, AT-6’s, and T-28’s fly. While it’s cool to see the aircraft fly, we take “cool” to a new level by adding pyrotechnics to the act. Watch as the planes do strafing and bombing runs. Lis-ten for the booooooom!

In addition to the flying acts, they also have com-puterized flight simulators available for spectators to enjoy prior to the show. The radio controlled airplanes show and static exhibits continue to be a crowd pleaser. Stop by and speak with some of the pilots who come from all over Wisconsin. They have a combined radio control experience of over 300 years and have been performing for 25 years. We sincerely appreciate the efforts of these dedicated model airplane builders. It takes a lot of time to build them, and a lot of practice to be able to perform the maneuvers that this group will perform today. We are lucky to have such a great group of aviation enthusiasts entertaining crowds today.

That feeling has been ingrained in commercial pilot/ flight instructor Gary Beekman since he piloted his first flight in a Cessna 150 at age 19. While Gary’s flight history runs a few decades, his love of flight goes back even further. His father, Gerald Beekman, a retired (Colonel) Army pilot, founded Oconto Aviation Service. It was under his direction that Gary developed his appreciation of planes and helicopters.

As a kid, Gary scrubbed the bellies of planes, then joined his father and his students on flight lessons and charter flights before learning to fly alongside his dad. After earning his flight instructor cerfificate, Gary did flight instruction and flew charters part-time, gaining flight time and experience. He earned a business degree and an Army commission through ROTC at UW-Oshkosh. In 1990, he attended Army Aviation Flight School through the Army National Guard. He moved on to fly fixed-wing EMS aircraft out of Austin-Straubel Airport. He also earned an education degree from UW-Green Bay shortly after flight school.

He then moved to become a Regional Jet Captain with the former Skyway Airlines (Midwest Connect) a subsid-iary of former Midwest Airlines. His commute from home in Oconto to Milwaukee was a fairly short one, but he didn’t like being gone from his family for four to five days at a time. From Milwaukee, he flew all over including Midwest destinations and to the East Coast.

“It was great experience and there’s nothing like having a cup of coffee and a cookie at 20,000 feet and seeing Niagara Falls, but the lifestyle was tough,” he said.

Gary’s flight career came full circle when Skyway went out of business and he had the opportunity to join Air Methods/Eagle III in July 2008.

“I thought I could make good use of my Army National Guard background, where I had done all my helicopter flying,” he said.

Gary, a retired chief warrant officer, had a few deploy-ments during his 27-year National Guard career includ-ing stateside missions to Ft. Benning, Ga. and Ft. Lewis, Wash. — and after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita — and said it was always rewarding to fly helicopters.

“lt’s a different kind of flying and so neat because you’re usually only 1,000 to 2,000 feet above the ground,” Beekman said. “You can feel like you’re a part of what’s going on and not so distanced from everything.”

Learning to fly @ Oconto Aviation = an aviation adventure + love of flight!

Gary Beekman, right, with his father, Gerald Beekman. PHOTO BY ABBY BEEKMAN

His last deployment with the West Bend National Guard unit was to Iraq in 2010 where he flew medevac missions. Today, flying Air Methods/EAGLE IIIs “Cadillac of helicopters” is a privilege Gary doesn’t take for granted.

“Every mission is rewarding,” he said. “I’m able to use my skills and abilities to help people in their time of need. Our mission is wonderful. I like what I do, I like the people I work with and where I work. What else could you ask for.”

He said helicopter air ambulance has made big improvements over the years — specifically, newer advanced aircraft, the use of night vision devices, and better training.

“We do semi-annual simulator training and checks similar to the airlines,” he said.

Having a nearby home base comes with its privileges. One of Gary’s most memorable flights was an early one, during which he flew to the Bond Center in Oconto and was actually able to say hi to his mom, who rode over on her bike. Gary’s flight career really came full circle when he was able to start flight instructing once again at Oconto Aviation.

“My schedule allows me to be able to flight instruct on a part-time basis, I really enjoy sharing the adventure of

flying,” he said.He is providing primary flight instruction and instru-

ment instruction in Oconto Aviation’s Cessna 172 aircraft. The Cessna 172 is a single engine, four-seat airplane set up really well for student pilots at any level.

“The C-172 is a nice flying aircraft and it’s one of the most widely-used primary trainers in the world.”

Learning to fly in Oconto has its advantages according to Gary. The airport has both hard-surface and soft-sod-surface runways. Learning to take-off and land on a soft-surface runway is still a requirement for the private pilot license and does have different techniques. The airport has a Common Traffic Advisory Frequency (CTAF) for pilots to communicate to one another, state their inten-tions, and remain safe. Student pilots therefore don’t have the extra burden of dealing with Air Traffic Control on every flight lesson and can concentrate on learning to fly. A small airport such as Oconto is also easy to get to and from, has no ramp congestion, and is simply an ideal learning environment for flying.

Gary is in a relationship, has three children from his marriage and spending time with them definitely ranks high on his priority list. From hunting to hiking, he has always enjoyed sharing the joy of nature. Gary’s apprecia-tion of the outdoors is a natural tie-in with his love of flight.

“Anytime we’re flying near clouds and the sun is streak-ing though or the sun is going down, it’s amazing,” he said. “There’s nothing quite like an office with a view.”

Living historyexhibits

Once again, the Oconto Fly-In is very excited to have several “living history exhibits” on display at the show. It’s a chance for all to get close to some historic airplanes, the very pas-sionate pilots that fl y these beautiful airplanes, and groups that keep our aviation heritage up and running so all can enjoy our rich aviation history. Owned by local aviation expert Don Kiel, It was an exciting day when Don fl ew into the airport, and, ever since, when Don takes this beautiful “bird” for a ride all eyes are skyward! The powerful twin engine low wing aircraft was a trainer and utility aircraft used by the US Army, US Navy, & the Royal Air Force produced from 1937 – 1970. We are thrilled to see this beautiful aircraft fl y, just watch for it.

L-19 Bird Dog was Cessna’s entry in the Army competition for a new liaison/observation aircraft to replace the rapidly aging WW2 L-Birds. Other competitors were Piper, Luscombe, and Taylorcraft. Awarded the contract in early 1950, Cessna began production and the U.S. Army began shipment to Korea. Bird Dogs were used by the U.S. Army, U.S. Marines, and ROK (Republic of Korea) Army. Their primary job was to locate enemy forces, report their location, and direct army and naval artillery against them. They also fl ew emergency resupply missions, strung communications wire, and countless other missions. Many top brass were fl own to forward areas, including General Eisenhower. Tonight Show sidekick Ed McMahon was a Marine pilot whom fl ew Bird Dogs there and was decorated for his ac-tions long before his television career.

After the cease fi re between North and South Korea, many were sent to Japan under the lend lease program and used by the Japanese Land Self Defense force. One of the Bird Dogs at Oconto is one of those

aircraft. It’s owned and fl own by a pilot whom fl ew Bird Dogs in Vietnam, so they’re both combat veterans. The other Bird Dog attending, the Orange one, was fi rst used as a trainer at Ft. Rucker, Ala.

A few years later the Vietnam confl ict began. Once again the Bird Dog was called to active duty over the South Vietnamese jungles. Now the forward air con-troller not only had to locate the enemy, but also mark their location under the triple canopy jungle. Rocket tubes were hung from the wings for fi ring 2.75 inch white phosphorus (willie pete) marking rockets. On im-pact, they gave o a bright white smoke which gave a reference to direct airstrikes, artillery, and naval gunfi re against. Many a grunt (infantry solder) owe their lives to the FAC’s fl ying Bird Dogs. They were also used over the secret war in Laos while fl own by the Ravens.

As Vietnam was winding down, many stateside Bird Dogs were assigned to Civil Air Patrol squadrons around the country and used for search and locate and disaster relief missions. Replaced by newer aircraft, they now are privately owned and fl own in airshows,

tow gliders and banners, and enjoyed for the great fl ying aircraft they are. Of the 3,437 built over 13 years, approximately 400 remain worldwide with about half of those in the U.S.

THE PILOTS:

The green Yak-52 is fl own by Herb Coussons out of Green Bay (call sign “Sparky”). It’s a closely-guarded secret how Herb was given this call sign. His Yak is imported from Romania and assembled in America using custom paint scheme Herb developed with his son.

Yak-52

The red and white Yak-52 is fl own by Lee Haven out of Green Bay (call sign “Hotwire”). Lee earned that call sign as was once trapped in Chicago, wanted to see his family in Green Bay, and hotwired his airplane to get home to them. It’s abnormal to see an airplane with wire hanging on the OUTSIDE of the cockpit on

the ground, but it’s unnerving to see it in the air. Lee’s Yak was assembled in Russia and used by the military until it was imported to the U.S. 15 years ago. Lee’s Yak is maintained and fl own by his father and two sons.

Waco UBF-2 13074 S/N 3691 rolled out of the Waco factory in Troy, Ohio on June 7, 1933.

Famed aviatrix and New York socialite, Betty Huyler Gilles, fi rst owned Waco 13074. After a few years of barnstorming around the east coast she sold the aircraft to Thomas Eastman of New York City. This began a long and active civil aviation roll for this particular UBF-2. Through the years she would change hands 22 times before being acquired by Woodson Woods in 1974.

Over the years she has operated as a banner towing aircraft over Manhattan for the Sky Advertising Corporation. She also spent many years on fl oats, operating out of rivers and lakes on the east coast.

Waco

During over 80 years of active service, Waco UBF-2, 13074 has had no major accidents or any major damage to it’s airframe. She has only endured minor incidents that come from normal wear and tear and small mishaps.

Woodson Woods fl ew the aircraft for many years before completely restoring the aircraft in 1992. She has always been stored in a hanger and extremely well cared for over the years. She is truly the cream of the cream of the F-2 line and one of only 10 fl ying examples of only 18 Waco UBF-2s produced.

Woodson Woods sold the ship to his son Scott in about the year 2000. I acquired it from Scott when

it was based north of San Fransisco and fl ew it to Washington Island in May of 2010. I am the 25th owner of the ship. As Scott said to me as we closed the deal: “Remember, you are not so much the new owner as the current caretaker …”

Whispering Pines won grand champion in the annual Wisconsin Christmas Tree Producer’s Association last year — that means a tree from Whispering Pines Tree Farm will be on display at the White House in 2016. The tree eventually harvested will be displayed in the Blue Room, used by the President to receive guests. In November 2016, the couple will travel to Washington D.C. to present the tree, which arrives by horse drawn carriage, to the first lady. Very exciting that the nation’s Christmas tree is coming from Oconto!

Back to school time already? Summer may feel like it just started, but for some, summer is preparation time for the next school year. Kobussen Buses Ltd. provides bus service to Oconto/Peshtigo Schools and back to school means the big yellow buses will need to be ready to go.

Kobussen Buses Ltd. was started in 1937 in Kaukauna, Wis. as the Kaukauna Bus Service, Inc. The company was born when the Kaukauna Board of Education asked local farmers and truck drivers to purchase and operate a bus to transport children living in rural areas to the Kaukauna High School. Elwood Kobussen, a dairy farmer and cattle/milk truck operator, was chosen to operate this first Kaukauna school bus. This was due mostly to the fact that he was already transporting students to and from school on his trucks. The idea of busing children gained momentum and a second bus was purchased in 1940.

The school bus business progressed slowly. One bus was added each year until the mid-1950s. The business began to flourish in the late 1950s. James Kobussen and Michael Kobussen, Elwood Kobussen’s, sons, joined the company, and then in the ’90s their children, Joe, Dan, Melissa and Scott joined the company.

Today Kobussen Buses Ltd. and its staff of 700 provide school bus service, charter trips, community service transportation and luxury motor coach travel, throughout the state of Wisconsin. Kobussen currently

works with 16 school districts across the state out of 12 offices. Kobussen may be a state wide company, but we take pride in growing our business with local talent. Kobussen offers competitive wages and benefits. We are always looking for good staff and drivers that want a love to work with kids. School bus transportation is one of the safest ways to travel. According to the Schoolbusfacts.com school bus travel is 50 times safer than car travel. The average bus takes 32 cars off of the road, so it is a green and clean way to travel as well.

Kobussen Buses is very excited about providing safe economical transportation to the children of the Oconto and Peshtigo area. We know the importance of small communities and take pride in providing the safest possible transportation possible for your children. For more information go to kobussen.com.
