Zerubbabel Collins (1733-1797) wasthe son of Benjamin and in his earlyyears carved in a manner quite similar tohis father's. The main difference was thatZerubbabel used smaller downsweptwings and a cap or wig-like design on topof the head. His early style is seen in thestone he made for Josiah Lyman (1760)

After his father died, Zerubbabeldeveloped his more characteristic styleof a deeply carved face with prominentjaw and small wings on either side, and an elaborate floral scroll below.51 stones in this later style stand inthe Old Yard today.

In 1778, Zerubbabel moved to Vermont where he began to work inmarble. Two of his marble stones appear in Columbia, the most famous beingthat for Mrs. Lydia Bennitt(1791) because it includes the price - 7 dollars - nearthe base. Some feel that this stone was primarily an “advertising” piece for hiswork. Its elaborate shaping and delicate floral motif certainly attest to hisexpertise.
