EXT. KAKARIKO VILLAGE - NIGHT

The camera PULLS OUT from the darkness of a well, revealing

Kakariko village in a calm night. The focus switches to a

house with the lights still on, with a silhouette of a woman

through the window.

INT. OLD RUSTIC BEDROOM - NIGHT

ANJU stands by the window, staring with concern. in the

distance, the tops of GANONDORFS CASTLE can be seen.

CHILD

Aunt Anju... Tell us a story.

Anju regains her focus and turns towards the CHILD (5)

laying in bed.

CHILD

Tell me a story.

Anju smiles and looks back out the window.

ANJU

Which story would you like to hear

tonight?

CHILD

The one about the princess!

Anju lets out a deep breath, losing her smile for a

beat. She brings it back, and sits down on the edge of the

child’s bed, carrying a candle with her.

ANJU

You’ve heard it so many times

already...

CHILD

Please?

ANJU

Okay... once upon a time, there was

a princess...

The camera focuses on Ganondorf’s castle out the window.

FADE TO:

2.

EXT. HYRULE CASTLE

The dark castle has been replaced with the lighter one, the

sky a perfect blue. We zoom in closer as we FADE TO:

INT. CASTLE COURTYARD - DAY

ZELDA (12) standing in her courtyard, picking and smelling

flowers. Impa can be seen in the distance, watching over

her.

ANJU

(vo)

Despite her royalty, she lived a

simple life. She was as peaceful

as her kingdom, and took the time

to admire beauty in all...

FADE TO:

INT. CASTLE COURTYARD - DAY

Zelda stares through the courtyard window. Ganondorf can be

seen kneeling. A reverse angle shows the worry on Zelda’s

face.

ANJU

(vo)

As princess she knew that one day

she was to rule her kingdom... and

was born with an instinct to

protect the land. Despite its

peace, the princess saw deep into

Hyrule’s shadows... She knew one

day trouble would come to Hyrule...

and one day, it did...

EXT. HYRULE FIELD

The drawbridge to Hyrule square lowers itself. Zelda and

Impa ride away on horseback. Zelda looks back, staring with

worry. A reverse angle shows Link watching with equal

concern.

TITLE: The Ocarina of Time. Episode 5: Dark sides.

ACT 1:

3.

EXT. KAKARIKO VILLAGE - NIGHT

Link ventures up the steps to Kakariko village. For a

moment everything seems peaceful, until Navi interrupts.

NAVI

HEY

Link jumps at the sudden appearance of Navi from under his

cap.

LINK

Stop that.

Navi shakes, laughing.

LINK

You’re going to wake up half the

village!

Link and Navi turn a corner, and stop. Link is shocked. A

reverse angle reveals that Kakariko village is on fire.

NAVI

Something tells me they’re already

up.

Link squints his eyes, trying to find the source of the

trouble. He can see Sheik standing over the well. Link

rushes off after him, with Navi right behind.

NAVI

Careful Link... we don’t know if we

can trust him!

Link stops before Sheik. He is hunched over the well,

without the composure he once held. The events of the last

episode are still affecting him.

LINK

Sheik, what happened?

Sheik jumps, turning to face Link.

SHEIK

Stand back!

From behind Sheik, a dark shadow rises. It seems slow and

fluid for a moment, before striking Sheik in a fast and

sharp assault. Link draws his sword and shield, watching as

the shadow travels over this building and that, crossing

through the fire.

The shadow then makes a mad dash for link. The camera zooms

in on his shield, as the shadow makes contact.

DARKNESS

After a beat of complete darkness, we fade to reveal LINK,

floating. He opens his eyes, looking tired. Link’s

expression quickly fades to that of one frozen with

agony. A close up on his eye reveals a shadow slowly

passing over it. The agony then fades to one of defeat, and

he closes his eyes again.

EXT. KAKARIKO VILLAGE - NIGHT

Link comes to, finding Sheik standing over him. He is

calmer than before.

SHEIK

Looks like you are going to be

okay.

Link stands, and Navi flies around his head.

LINK

What the heck happened?

SHEIK

What you saw before was a dark

spirit... a shadow that once

plagued kakariko village. Impa,

leader of the Sheikah’s, once

sealed it within the well... but as

the forces of darkness grow, its

prison became weaker.

LINK

Did you stop it?

NAVI

It retreated to the graveyard!

Sheik lowers his gaze.

SHEIK

No... to the shadow temple.

Link looks a little surprised, and Navi gets erratic.

SHEIK

Deep below the graveyard is a house

of the dead, once used by the

SHEIK (cont’d)Sheikah’s tribe as a temple of

worship.

LINK

I’ve been to the graveyard before

and never saw this.

SHEIK

That’s because you only look into

the light.

Sheik turns around and moves towards the steps.

SHEIK

Those of my tribe knew a melody

that draws one into darkness...

absorbing even time itself. It is

time I teach you the Nocturne of

Shadow...

Sheik pulls out her harp and begins to play the small

song. Link waits a second unsure, and then pulls out his

Ocarina. He follows Sheik’s tune, and for a moment, they

play in harmony. As link pulls the Ocarina away, a darkness

passes over him. His eyes turn red.

Link’s breathing heavy, and he looks around with panic. From

LINK’s POV we can see the shadows growing, with strange

faded shapes floating through them.

NAVI

Link?

LINK

What is happening..?

Sheik puts away her harp, and limps over towards the steps.

SHEIK

I will walk in Impa’s steps and try

to seal the shadow away. If I am

unsuccessful...

Sheik looks over his shoulder at Link, who is still

struggling with his new vision. from HIS POV he sees a

shadow standing by Sheik, something of a tall and elegant

woman, covered in shadow.

SHEIK

Please, protect Kakariko village

for as long as you can...

(CONTINUED)

CONTINUED: 6.

Sheik throws down a deku nut, and disappears in a

flash. Link looks away, trying to regain his proper sight

and balance.

LINK

He can’t do it alone... we have to

help him...

NAVI

Did you forget who he is working

for?

Link shakes his head.

LINK

No! But that hasn’t stopped him

from helping us. Hes torn between

helping us and helping

Ganondorf. Now its our turn to

help him.

Navi shakes violently.

NAVI

This is probably all part of their

plan!

LINK

Doesn’t matter. Shadow temple

means shadow sage. We’ll need

whoever it is if we want to stop

Ganondorf!

Link regains his focus, eyes still red, and runs towards the

graveyard entrance. For a second, all is calm, until

Ganondorf walks out of the shadows. Behind him, Koume. She

giggles.

KOUME

It seems your little servant is

playing for the wrong side.

Ganondorf smiles.

GANONDORF

Every step they take leads me

closer to the princess. Let them

play their games, just as they did

when he was young.

Koume loses her smile.

(CONTINUED)

CONTINUED: 7.

KOUME

Your little soldier is

wavering! Every sage they find

brings you closer to your demise!

Ganondorf loses his patience and charges up a fireball.

GANONDORF

Then make sure he does not find

ours!

Ganondorf flings the fireball, And Koume disappears before

it can hit her.

ACT 2

INT. SHADOW TEMPLE - NIGHT

Impa leads a small hooded figure by the hand, down a dark

set of stairs, before coming to the Shadow temple’s front

room. Surrounding them are similar looking doors. Through

one of these doors passes the SHEIKAH ELDER. A tall and

lean older man in garb similar to Sheik.

SHEIKAH ELDER

Were you followed?

IMPA

We had to take the long road

here... but it threw him off our

trail. He should still be

searching for her near the Kokiri

forest...

The Sheikah Elder approaches the small hooded figure, and

pulls it off from her fast, revealing young Zelda in her

royal garb. He curls his nose.

SHEIKAH ELDER

Your training... begins now!

The Sheikah elder deals a small attack to Zelda, throwing

her back against one of the more solid doors. She struggles

to get up, looking to IMPA. She nods reassuringly.

IMPA

Its okay Zelda... remember what I

taught you.

(CONTINUED)

CONTINUED: 8.

SHEIKAH ELDER

No more of that name!

Zelda launches herself at the Sheikah Elder, who dodges her

attack and sends her flying with a small move. Zelda shows

noticeable pain. She looks to Impa for sympathy.

SHEIKAH ELDER

And no more of that dress!

IMPA

Stop that! She is a royal.

The Sheikah Elder turns to Impa.

SHEIKAH ELDER

For the last three days there have

been no royals. Only Ganondorf,

and the war hes only begun to wage

against our kingdom.

The Sheikah Elder turns to Zelda.

SHEIKAH ELDER

She is a royal no more. All that

remains is a soldier. If shes

willing.

Zelda throws herself at the Sheikah Elder again, looking

angry. He easily blocks and hurts her again. She lets out

a sharp scream.

IMPA

STOP THAT-

ZELDA

No!

Impa stops at the princess’s order. She turns to see Zelda

struggling to raise herself.

ZELDA

The Elder is right. If I am to

take back the throne... I must be

willing to fight for it.

Impa stares, impressed by Zelda’s determination. Zelda

launches herself again at the Sheikah Elder, who smiles at

her with admiration.

9.

KAKARIKO GRAVEYARD - NIGHT

Link rushes into the graveyard, stopping suddenly to

re-orient himself. He squints. From his POV we can see the

shadow here moving, with strange purple colors floating

through them. He looks to the large Grave at the end of the

lot, and sees a staircase.

LINK

There! I see it... there’s an

entrance.

Navi follows Link unsure, both stopping at the grave.

NAVI

Are you sure about this?

Link stares deep into the shadows for a moment. He looks

over his shoulder, at his own shadow, cast by the

moonlight. His attention is then caught by Sheik, who is

leaning against a grave in the distance.

LINK

What is he doing?

NAVI

Looks like Sheik is even weaker

than we thought.

Link re-affirms himself, turning back towards the grave.

LINK

Then its up to us to stop the

shadow before it takes another shot

at Kakariko Village.

Link dashes off towards the grave, stepping deeper into the

ground, where transparent footsteps exist, passing entirely

underground as he reaches the grave.

In the distance Sheik raises his head, watching Link

disappear. He struggles to rise, and dashes off towards the

grave as well.

INT. SHADOW TEMPLE - NIGHT

Link finds himself in the same shadow temple entry room that

Zelda did before. HE can see where a door is transparent,

it follows the path, finding himself in a room with a large

gap in the floor. Over it is a door, with a tongue

welcoming him. It is too far to jump, but link can see

steps in the darkness. He follows them, and continues

deeper and deeper into the maze of the temple.

NAVI

That song has helped you see in

this temple.

LINK

Not the temple... the shadows... I

can see all of them more clearly

now... even my own.

NAVI

What are you talking about.

Link is making his way down a large staircase suspended in

darkness. Graves can be seen floating in the distance,

situated as if on the ground.

LINK

Back there, in the Village, when

the shadow attacked me... There

was a moment- Just one... where it

passed over me. In that one

moment, I was afraid. Not of

Ganondorf, or any of the creatures

hes brought on us. I was afraid of

myself. Afraid that I wouldn’t

measure up.

Link stops, staring mournfully into the darkness. One of

his eyes have returned to its original color. the other

still red.

LINK

I realized there was a chance I

could lose and I Gave up. And

that’s all it took. One moment to

realize I’m not like the other

children of the Kokiri who live

forever. I only have two

choices. Save Hyrule... or die

trying. And that might be the side

of me that wins.

Link makes his way down more steps, and finds...

INT. SHADOW TEMPLE - CONTINUOUS

a room of pure darkness. at the other end, a door. He makes

his way to it, but it doesn’t seem to come any closer.

NAVI

Link.

(CONTINUED)

CONTINUED: 11.

Link stops in his tracks, then turns around. Over his

shoulder, suspended in the darkness, Sheik can be seen

fighting a large shadow, barely noticeable from the darkness

surrounding it.

LINK

Sheik!

Link and Navi rush towards Sheik, who is trying to fight the

shadow, but losing. Link drops to his knees grabs the

damaged Sheik by his shoulders, preventing him from falling

over.

SHEIK

I’m sorry... its too much.

Sheik closes his eye.

SHEIK

I am not as powerful as Impa.

LINK

You were already... damaged by what

happened at the water temple.

SHEIK

Please... Every moment it bides in

this darkness, the stronger it

gets. Stop the shadow!

Link nods, standing, and turning towards the shadow. It

begins to shrink in size, changing shape.

NAVI

What is it?

Link watches as its form comes together, a dark reflection

of himself, with two red eyes.

LINK

It’s... Me...

Link draws his sword, the shadow matches. He runs towards

SHADOW LINK who mirrors his every move. The two slash their

swords against each other, seemingly evenly matched. As the

fight loops onward, Link becomes more tired, the shadow

becoming stronger.

Sheik watches from the distance, Navi by his side.

SHEIK

He needs you.

(CONTINUED)

CONTINUED: 12.

NAVI

But what about you?

SHEIK

I’ve been broken for much longer

than you’ve known me, small

fairy. Don’t let Link become

fractured like me.

Navi flies towards Link, who has locked his blade against

shadow link. The two press against each other with all

their might. While Link shows nothing but aggression, and

weakening muscles, Shadow Link smiles, maintaining Link’s

initial strength.

NAVI

Link!

LINK

Little busy Navi...

Link Grunts, pushing forward just a tiny bit, before being

pushed even further back.

NAVI

LISTEN!!

Navi becomes erratic.

NAVI

Remember what you said

earlier? How you were afraid your

choices were to either win or

die? You’re not like the Kokiri

Link, but you are like me!

Link looks confused at this, caught off guard. In this

moment Shadow Link doubles his effort, and link doubles

back, trying to regain his edge. The two continue to push

against each other with the swords.

NAVI

According to the Deku tree, all

Fairies are born to carry out a

single purpose. We don’t die until

we fulfill our purpose in

life! And this ones yours,

Link! I can’t promise you’ll live

forever like the other forest

children... but I KNOW you won’t

die until your purpose in this

world is complete. WE will save

Hyrule!

(CONTINUED)

CONTINUED: 13.

Link is touched by this sentiment, and loses his edge. The

shadow uses this moment to attack. Link gasps as his sword

goes right for Navi. Navi turns bravely(for a fairy) and

rushes towards the shadow, passing right through it and its

sword.

Link’s eyes widen, the shadow is weakened by the light of

Navi, who passes through it unscathed.

LINK

Light...

NAVI

Duh!

Link gets up and charges his sword, charging up his light as

the shadow reforms. In one swift and determined motion,

Link spins right through the shadow, his light cutting it in

half. The shadow dissipates, becoming one with the

darkness. Navi returns to link. Sheik rises in the

distance, watching as the blue light covers Link.

SHEIK

(under his breath)

You did it, hero. She’ll be proud

of you...

Sheik turns, disappearing in the darkness as Link disappears

in his light.

ACT 3

INT. CHAMBER OF SAGES

Link finds himself in the center of the chamber, with Impa

rising before him.

IMPA

It’s been a very long time, Link.

LINK

You’re the Sage of Shadows?

NAVI

You probably should have guessed it

by now. I guessed it as soon as we

found out about Saria.

Link smiles at Navi. Impa smiles at the two of them.

(CONTINUED)

CONTINUED: 14.

IMPA

When I last saw you, I had to take

Zelda into hiding. And I was

worried a dysfunctional pair like

you would never rise to the

challenge. It took seven years,

but you have found a way to work

together.

Navi floats closer to link than usual.

NAVI

Does this mean you know where Zelda

is.

Impa loses her smile.

IMPA

You’ll be seeing her sooner than

you think.

Link smiles triumphantly. Impa holds out her hand, and the

medallion of shadows appears, floating towards Link.

IMPA

Take this with you, and know that

my power will guide you even in the

darkest of nights.

The purple light of the coin takes over the screen.

FADE TO: BLACK.

IMPA

(vo)

Tell Sheik... I’m proud of him.

EXT. GRAVEYARD - SUNRISE

Link floats down from a blue tunnel of light, finding

himself back in the graveyard, before the royal

tombstone. He turns, and sees Sheik standing mournfully

over the grave she leaned against earlier.

Link approaches him. Sheik closes his eye, placing his hand

on the grave.

SHEIK

You did well, Hero.

Link looks at him cautiously. Sheik is more broken than

we’ve yet to see him in the series. Link looks down at the

grave, and finds the name has been destroyed.

(CONTINUED)

CONTINUED: 15.

LINK

Sheik... What happened? Who is

buried here?

Sheik opens his eye, looking to the grave, and then begins

to walk away from the Grave.

SHEIK

Someone I was once... very close

to.

Link stares at Sheik with concern as he limps away.

EXT. GRAVEYARD - NIGHT

Young Zelda, now in Sheikah’ garb, makes her way through the

graveyard. She approaches Impa and the SHEIKAH ELDER. An

upward angle shows very little of the ground. In Zelda’s

arm is a bundled cloth. She looks disappointed.

SHEIKAH ELDER

You’ve mastered your training fast,

but it is not complete until we do

this.

Zelda nods, mournfully. She throws the bundle of cloth

before her. The angle changes to reveal that they are

standing over a grave, With her dress now lying at the

bottom of it. Impa and the Sheikah Elder begin to shovel

dirt into it. The gravestone reads "Here lies Princess

Zelda, true heir to the hylian throne".

SHEIKAH ELDER

From this day forth you are no

longer Zelda, Princess of

Hyrule. You are only Sheik, last

in the line of the Sheikah.

Zelda nods, and puts on her mask and hat. a blast can be

heard in the distance, and all three turn towards the

town. it is on fire. at the entrance the graveyard is

Ganondorf, standing on his horse. He charges up a ball of

dark energy, and blasts Impa, the elder, and young

Zelda. They each fly in different directions.

slams against her own grave, slumping against it. He opens

his eye, which is now red. To his right he sees the Sheikah

Elder, unmoving. She next turns to her left, seeing Impa

laying against the ground. Her eyes are wide open, blood

leaking from them as well as her mouth. Ganondorf laughs,

grabbing her attention.

CONTINUED: 16.

YOUNG ZELDA

No!

GANONDORF

It’s too late for them! You... who

are you!?

Young Zelda looks down, clenching her fist.

YOUNG ZELDA

I am Sheik... last...

She looks to Impa again, who is clearly dead.

YOUNG ZELDA

Last in the line of Sheikah’s.

GANONDORF

Humph. From this day forward, you

are my soldier!

Ganondorf holds out his arm, dark energy, similar to the

shadow, flowing through Sheik.

SHEIK

Yes, master.

Sheik stands in his daze, revealing that the gravestone now

has a destroyed name, no longer reading "princess

Zelda". Ganondorf smiles at his new servant, who rises from

a bow, with a dead look in his eyes.

ANJU

(vo)

No one knows what happened to the

princess of Hyrule...

JUMP CUT TO: Darkness

With a single flame on a candle visible.

ANJU

(continuous)

Not even she herself.

With one breath Anju blows out the candle, leaving the

screen in complete darkness.
