  • heinterimadministrationbetweenOBUs14thand15thpresidentshasnow exceededeightmonths.AsanOBUretreadaretireerecalledtoactivedutymy serviceduringtheinterimhasbeensatisfyingandrewarding.Ihavebeenpleasedandimpressedwiththehighlevelofsupportandencouragementprovidedtomebystudents,faculty,staff,trustees,OklahomaBaptists,alumniandfriends.AsonewholovesOBUandbelievesstronglyinhermission,IhaverenewedconfidenceintheUniversitysfuturewhenIseethehighlevelofcommitmentexpressedbysomanyofourconstituents.

    The2007-08schoolyear,althoughoneoftransition,wasnotayearofinaction.TheOBUfamilywasreadyandwillingtomoveahead.Considersomeofour2007-08accomplishments.

    InNovember,wededicatedthenewRecreationandWellnessCenterandtheexpansiontotheNobleComplex.Thisprojectaninvestmentofmorethan$12millionbroughtsignificantopportunitiestostudents,facultyandstaff,andmembersofthecommunitytoenjoystate-of-the-artrecreationandtrainingfacilities.

    Throughouttheyear,wepreparedforthevisitingteamfromtheHigherLearningCommissionoftheNorthCentralAssociationofCollegesandSchools.Wewereencouragedbytheteamspositiveresponseduringitsvisitinthespring.Theprocessofself-studywillbenefitOBUintheyearsahead.

    AmajorchallengefacingOBUisimprovingenrollment,andtheentireUniversityfamilyhasbeenworkingtoaddressrecruitingandretentionissues.Iampleasedtoreportthatweexpectincreasesthisfallinretentionofcurrentstudents,thenumberoftransferstudentsandthenumberoffreshmen.IbelievethatOBUwillexperienceanincreaseinenrollmentforthefallsemesterofgreaterthan5percent.

    TheUniversitysplanningofficerswereassignedextradutythisyearaswerevisedOBUsstrategicplanningassumptionsandgoalsanddevelopedspecificobjectivesforfourfiscalyears.ANeedsEvaluationTeamisstudyingfutureconstructionandrenovationrequests,endowmentopportunitiesandotherprogramproposals.TheteamwillprioritizeneedsforaCentennialcapitalcampaign.

    AStudentHousingTaskForceisdevelopingaplanforthefutureimprovementofOBUsexistinghousingfacilitiesandconstructionofadditionalapartments.ImprovementsareunderwayonKerrDormitoryandMacArthurApartments,andWMUDormitorywillberenovatedduring2008-09.

    OBUhasenteredintoanagreementwiththeKunmingGuanghuaSchoolinKunmingCity,China,toacceptgraduatesfromthisprivatelyownedK-12schoolintoourIntensiveEnglishProgramand/ortheOBUundergraduateprogram.Wealsohavere-instatedanagreementforexchangeofcourseswithourneighbortothewest,St.GregorysUniversity.

    Agroupof17studentsandtwofacultyspentamonthinGermanyandFranceaspartofOBUsnewsummerEuropeanStudyProgram,reminiscentofthepopularEuropeanStudyTourofthe1960sand1970s.AtotalofsixstudentmissiongroupsworkedinMexico,SouthAsiaandThailandduringJanuaryTermandareworkinginSouthAsiaandAzerbaijanthissummer.

    WehaveexperiencedafiscalyearrecordforfinancialsupportasgiftstoOBUhaveexceeded$8.5million,surpassingourpreviousrecordof$7.1million.Thisisinadditiontothe$2.8millioninoperationalsupportprovidedbytheBaptistGeneralConventionofOklahoma.Weexpecttohaveabalancedbudgetforthe16thconsecutiveyear.

    America has a shortage of nurses, and the gap between supply and demand is widening. That is the consensus of futurists and healthcare officials. The looming crisis is accentuated by the reality that nursing technology and practice is constantly advancing.

    EvidentneedandchangingpracticesarenotnewtoOBUsSchoolofNursing.Infact,theschoolsdeanbelievesthemanifestneedsmatchwellwiththeprogramsmanifeststrengths.

    Weeducatestudentstopracticeforthefirstsixmonthsaftertheygraduate,Bolhouseexplained.Afterthattime,alotofwhattheylearnedisoutofdate.

    ThatisnotacriticismofOBUsprogram,butrathertherealityofquicklychanginghealthcareadvances.Itrevealsafocusonequippingthenursingstudentswithmoderntechniquesandpracticesaswellascriticalthinkingskillswhichcanstrengthentheirabilitytoaddressanysituationstheyencounter.

    OBUsnursingstudentshavebenefitedfrommajorfiscalsupportinrecentyears.Ananonymousdonor,determinedtoaddressthenursingshortageinOklahoma,hasprovided$1.4milliontofundscholarships,facultysupportandanursingresidencyprogram.Thefundingisintheformofaseven-yearcommitmentof$200,000peryear.OBUjustcompletedthefourthyearoftheagreement,whichhashelpedbolstertheSchoolofNursingenrollment.Therewere133nursingmajorsonBisonHillin2003-04,theyearbeforethenewsupportbegan.Inthefallof2007,218studentsmajoredinnursing.

    Alongwiththefinancialassistanceforstudentsandpersonnel,thenursingprogramstechnologicalofferingshavebeenenhancedbygrantsfromtwoOklahomafoundations.TheInasmuchFoundationofOklahomaCityandtheMcCaslandFoundationofDuncanhaveenabledthepurchaseoffoursimulationmanikinstwoSimManunits,aSimBabyandafemalebirthingsimulatortoassiststudentsinclinicaltraining.

    Wecanprogramascenarioanddoonethingoranotherdependingonwhatthestudentdoes,saidKarenCotter,assistantprofessorofnursing.Wereveryfortunatetohavethisleveloftechnologyinsimulation.

    Itimprovesthestudentslearningbecausetheycanlearnwithlessanxiety.Whenstudentsgointoclinicalsettingstheyaremoreconfidentwhentheyseearealperson.

    THINK AND ACTWhilethesimulationcapabilitieswhichBolhousedescribesascutting-edgenursingeducationhelpintrainingforactualpractice,thetechnologystillhaslimitations.Simulatorscanassistwithhandlingarangeofresponses,buttheycannotreplicateeveryhumanresponse.

    Itisneverthesameasapersonthrowingyouacurveball,Bolhousesaid.

    Thevalueofliveclinicalexperienceistheunpredictability,Cotteradded.

    ThatbringsOBUs10full-timenursingfacultymembersbacktoabedrockcomponentoftheOBUdegreeprogram:criticalthinking.

    Wewantstudentstoconsideralloptionsandweighthoseoptions.Thentheycangointocriticalthinkingmode,Bolhousesaid.Weteachnursingprocesses.Wehavetoteachstudentshowtothinkbecausewecantteacheverysituationtheywillface.

    ShecitesoneofherfavoritenursingeducatorsinexplainingOBUsapproach:Wevegottogetawayfromwhatnursesdoandtalkabouthowtheythink.

    ForBolhouse,a1973OBUgraduate,andCotter,a1994OBUgraduate,theUniversitysliberalartscurriculumhasbeenasteadfastcomponentofthenursingprogramssuccess.

    Liberalartsbringsthebestfoundationforprofessionalpractice,Cottersaid.Wehavegottohavefacultywhosupporttheliberalarts.

    Bolhouseagrees,notingthatthemostoffamousofnurses,FlorenceNightingale,gainedastrongliberalartseducationfromherfatherbeforeshebecameanurse.FortheOBUdean,theconnectionbetweencurriculumandfacultyiscriticalforherprogramssuccess
